Pochettino needs to be careful with decisons surrounding Spurs defensive duo

Spurs and manager Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping for a flying finish to the season in their new stadium ahead of a massive summer.

The London club are expected to finally make some moves in the transfer market this summer after some disappointing windows in previous years, and Pochettino will no doubt have a long list of targets he would like to bring into the club.

However, despite funds no doubt being available for Spurs, Pochettino is reportedly considering selling both Kieran Trippier and Danny Rose as he looks to shake things up at the club, and we here in the Tavern think that this could well be a risky move.

Trippier and Rose have both proven themselves as loyal servants to Spurs over recent years, and their performances too have warranted their consistent selection from Pochettino.

Bringing in players of the right sort of quality to replace the English duo could be something which costs a fair bit of money in all honesty, and there is also no guarantee of getting in players who can fill the void adequately.

Of course, Pochettino is well within his rights to want to change a few things round in his squad, but Rose and Trippier might both be players who cannot be replaced with ease.

Spurs do need to spend this summer and they do also need to move a few people on, but the decison to move the England pair might well prove a costly one in all honesty.

Hugo Lloris expected to be fit for Brighton game

Tottenham Hotspur fans are probably still yet to get over the fact that their side are in the Champions League semi-final, with Ajax now standing in their way.

Mauricio Pochettino really has worked wonders this season and the north London club’s new stadium certainly seems to be helping, so perhaps Champions League glory could be on the cards.

What’s the News?

Spurs recently received a big boost on the injury front, as according to PhysioRoom.com (via football.london), Hugo Lloris is expected to be fit for the Brighton clash on Tuesday.

“He has suffered a small muscle problem,” Pochettino told reporters.

Paulo Gazzaniga started in-between the sticks at the Etihad yesterday and it’s safe to say that he looked less than comfortable, especially when it came to playing the ball out from the back.

The Verdict:Hugo Lloris hasn’t been at his best this season but he’s still a very important part of Spurs’ setup under Mauricio Pochettino, so his return would come as a big boost for the club and supporters. He will provide a wealth of experience in the closing stages of this season and he has the ability to win games for the north London club.Of course, Spurs fans would love to see Harry Kane return to action immediately with lots still to play for in the current campaign, but it looks as if they’ll have to settle for Lloris right now.Tottenham Hotspur fans, how big of a boost will Lloris’ return be on Tuesday? Liverpool fans thrilled with forward’s record

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah scored his 50th goal for the club as the Reds recorded a vital victory over Southampton on Friday, to the delight of supporters.

The Egypt international scored the second goal in a 3-1 victory over the Saints at St Mary’s as Jurgen Klopp’s men jumped atop the Premier League standings at the expense of Manchester City.

The Reds now have five games of the season remaining as they attempt to overhaul Pep Guardiola’s champions and wrestle the title away.

Salah has been in middling form in recent weeks, going six games without a goal.

However, he got back on the goal trail on the south coast, capping a superb run with an excellent finish past Angus Gunn.

And supporters are delighted with the fact that the 5 foot 9 attacker is back amongst the goals as the Reds look to win their first league title in a generation.

Spurs must drop interest in Malcom

Spurs fans may already be crying out for the summer transfer window after their recent collapse in the Premier League, but with Daniel Levy calling the shots there’s no guarantee they’ll spend.

The North London club remain in a promising position in the race for a top four spot but things would be a whole lot better right now if Mauricio Pochettino’s side hadn’t suffered a dip in form prior to the international break.

Of course, one area that requires improving in the summer transfer window is out wide as the likes of Erik Lamela and Son Heung-min are the only two natural wingers in the side.

Interestingly, it appears as if the Lilywhites already have their eyes on a possible summer swoop, as according to Marca (via Sport Witness), Barcelona have slapped a €70 million (£60 million) asking price on Malcom and the article also references Spurs’ interest in the Brazilian.

It’s safe to say that the Brazilian, who is valued at £36 million (by Transfermarkt), isn’t even worth half the reported £60 million fee as he’s completely flopped since moving to Spain, having made just 15 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona this season.

Spurs fans will agree that Lamela has been hit-and-miss this season and he’s had his fair share of critics at times, but even the Argentine is better than Malcom. He’s managed to feature in 31 games in all competitions, producing six goals and three assists, so it’s safe to say that Spurs should drop their reported interest in Malcom immediately.

Tottenham Hotspur fans, surely £60 million for the Brazilian must be some kind of joke? Join the discussion by commenting down below!

Chelsea risk jeopardising club’s future if they rebuff offers for Pedro

Chelsea have a lot of big decisions to make this summer with a transfer ban currently hanging over their heads, while the futures of various players remain uncertain.

And one of those players includes Pedro, who is said to be attracting interest from two Serie A giants.

The Breakdown

The Daily Express reports both AC Milan and Inter Milan are keen on the 31-year-old, though Chelsea could be reluctant to sell due to the sanction handed to them by FIFA.

The Blues, of course, could still end up getting their ban frozen. But even if they cannot, they should still consider selling Pedro in order to give some younger names the chance to impose themselves.

Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic, for example, could easily be Maurizio Sarri’s first-choice wingers next season if Pedro ends up leaving alongside Eden Hazard.

Meanwhile, there is still Willian and other players out on loan and in the youth ranks who could take up cover spots if Sarri is worried about numbers amid the transfer ban.

Perhaps not the most glamorous crop of wide men to some Chelsea supporters, but the Blues have to make something work should Hazard leave and their transfer ban remain in play.

And by moving on Pedro to allow the likes of Hudson-Odoi and Pulisic to get genuine opportunities, they could end up doing just that.

Ultimately, the duo could be the club’s future with their talent, but they will not get the chance to show and prove that until some of the older names in the squad such as Pedro are moved on.

Arsenal: Emery should not be sympathetic when it comes to Danny Welbeck

There are few players at Arsenal who are as universally loved as Danny Welbeck.

The deadline day signing from 2014 has gone from an unwanted signing to a cult favourite in north London, with his winning goals against Manchester United and Leicester City stitching his name into Arsenal folklore.

His contract is due to expire at the end of the season, with reports that Unai Emery is willing to renew his deal further into the future, and although Welbeck is a popular figure both with the fans and within the team, the club should avoid keeping the former United striker at the club beyond his current contract.

Since joining the Gunners five years ago, Welbeck has only made 88 Premier League appearances out of 177 games the English striker could have played in. Like many talented footballers at Arsenal, the 28-year-old attacker has been plagued with injuries since his move to north London, and Emery can’t afford to be sympathetic with Welbeck taking the club forward.

Welbeck has also only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored for the Gunners since his move to north London 18 months ago, and Arsenal are in need of letting go of deadwood this summer in order to facilitate transfers in positions the club need improvements in.

Renewing Welbeck for another season would also mean one of Arsenal’s talented youngsters will likely have to wait longer for first-team opportunities, with the likes of Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson all in jeopardy of losing minutes in the starting XI if the English international stays at the club.

Some of Welbeck’s goals will forever be part of the Gunners’ history, and as much as fans would like him to stay at the club, the reality is that the striker does not fit in the long-term future of Arsenal, and Emery will be costing the team if he does renew the contract of the former United striker.

Pundit View: Lawrenson backs Wolves to win FA Cup semi-final

[ad_pod ]

In Mark Lawrenson’s weekly predictions on the BBC, the pundit has claimed that he think Wolves will edge their FA Cup semi-final with Watford this weekend. The former Liverpool man predicted it to be a close game, but for the Midlands club to come out on top on penalties.

What’s he said?

Lawrenson was initially full of praise for Wolves, claiming that Nuno Santo deserved plaudits for the way he’s lead his team in 2018/19. He told the BBC:

“At the end of the season, Hornets boss Javier Gracia and Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Sanchez will both get honourable mentions when the awards are handed out.

“Nuno, in particular, has impressed me. I know there is an argument that Wolves have got greater resources than Watford, but you have to consider the way they play and the fact they are a little bit more consistent than Watford.”

The pundit went onto talk about how Wolves have played this season, even after tasting defeat.

“I know Wolves have had a couple of slip-ups where you think their result is strange – like their defeat by Burnley last week.

“But Nuno knows that is what happens in the Premier League, and he has never changed the way he plays after a defeat. Instead he keeps on repeating his message to the players.”

He then finally predicted the outcome of their next match which sees them travel to Wembley.

“I think this one is going to be very tight. I would not be surprised if it goes to penalties – but I do think Wolves will edge it.”

Is he right?

Wolves have been a pleasure to watch this season and he is without a doubt right when it comes to Nuno. The Portuguese manager has done a brilliant job since he took over, guiding them from the Championship last season to the lucrative Premier League.

The fact they now sit seventh shows why he deserves to be in the conversation for awards come the end of the season.

Lawrenson is also right to bring up some of the strange results they’ve had this term. Their away form hasn’t been fantastic but they’ve usually had a way to answer any adversity they’ve faced. That was all too clear when they bounced back to beat Manchester United on Tuesday evening.

Although Wolves lost to Watford earlier in the season there is a sense that they may just have too much at Wembley for their opponents on this occasion.

Having signed Raul Jimenez permanently this week the club is surrounded by positivity which could drive them to success.

Tottenham fans were shocked that Moussa Sissoko missed out on MOTM award

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans have expressed their disappointment at Moussa Sissoko missing out on the Man of the Match award after his performance against Crystal Palace.

Son Heung-Min won the award after scoring the first goal at the club’s new stadium, seeing his effort from the edge of the box deflected into the bottom corner after he cut in from the right flank. Christian Eriksen netted the second.

But Sissoko turned in an excellent midfield performance versus the Eagles, having been transformed under Mauricio Pochettino this season.

Indeed, per WhoScored, Sissoko made two tackles, two clearances, one interception and won three aerial duels.

Sissoko also made one key pass and had a pass completion rate of 81%.

Spurs confirmed on Twitter on Thursday that Son had won the accolade but a number of fans replied indignantly to their tweet, insisting that his French team-mate was the rightful winner.
