'We are going to struggle' – Ruben Amorim makes AFCON admission as Man Utd set to lose key stars Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo

Manchester United are expected to lose both Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo when the Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in December. The tournament, which takes place in Morocco, starts over the festive period and runs until mid-January. United won't lose a plethora of players for the competition but the absence of both Mbeumo and Amad will hit the Premier League side hard.

AFPUnited's new-look attack starting to click

Mbeumo joined United from Brentford over the summer as the Premier League powerhouse sought to overhaul their stuttering attack. United only scored 44 league goals last season, the fifth fewest, as strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee hit the back of the net just seven times between them.

United also signed Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko from Wolves and RB Leipzig, respectively, and after a slow start, the attack looks to finally be clicking for Ruben Amorim's side. Indeed, United won their third successive league game last weekend as they beat Brighton 4-2 on home turf.

Cunha scored the opener for United, his first following his summer arrival, while Mbeumo bagged a brace in the victory at Old Trafford. Sesko also recently opened his United account, netting in the defeat to Brentford last month and the 2-0 win over Sunderland at the start of October.

Advertisement'We are going to struggle'

Mbeumo is expected to make the Cameroon squad for AFCON, while Amad will likely make the Ivory Coast selection as the Elephants look to defend their crown in Morocco. And ahead of Saturday's game at Nottingham Forest, Amorim has made a frank admission at the likelihood of losing the pair for a sustained period.

When quizzed about AFCON, Amorim said: "We will have time to suffer. We are going to struggle a little bit, but we already knew it's going to be an opportunity.

"When I watch the training, there are players that should be playing, but it's hard with one game to take some players from the team, because they are doing well also during the training in games. So other players are going to have the opportunity to help us.

"They are understanding the way we want to play, so if we are improving on that, the change of characteristics is not going to change the idea or the momentum of the team. But let's use Amad and Bryan in these games and we will see in general."

Getty Images Sport'We are prepared for a very tough match'

United are back in action this weekend when they make the trip to the City Ground to take on Forest. Forest's first game under newly-appointed head coach Sean Dyche ended in a win over FC Porto in the Europa League, but they lost 2-0 at Bournemouth at the weekend.

And despite Forest's struggles, Amorim admits that United are in for a 'tough' match. "I watched against Porto, I watched against Bournemouth, the style of play is similar, with different characteristics," Amorim said.

"I watched one game that we didn't pre-season with Sporting, so to try to understand how he played in that game. It's similar, he can change some characteristics of the players with the talent that they have, especially with Gibbs-White, Anderson, Hudson-Odoi, very good players.

"So we need to be prepared for a different game against Brighton. We had space to play. We are not going to have that space. You need to understand that we are not being the same team away and at home, so we need to improve the way we control the environment. Every tackle is a big moment for the opponent's fans, so we need to play better away.

"We are prepared for a very tough match."

'It was tough, it was really tough'

Amorim recently oversaw back-to-back league wins as United boss for the first time since his appointment last year as the Manchester side followed up a 2-0 win over Sunderland with a 2-1 victory at Liverpool. And they made it three wins on the spin with a 4-2 home triumph over Brighton.

The former Sporting boss has come under huge pressure during his debut year in England, but United look a far more cohesive unit after a tough opening few months at the Old Trafford helm.

"It was a journey, it was a big journey," Amorim reflected on his first year at the club. "It was tough, it was really tough. I learned a lot. Today the answer is different from three weeks ago so it's important to understand that, the biggest honour. It's only been two matches so far from that."

United follow up Saturday's trip to Forest with a game at Tottenham in the final round of league games ahead of the November international break.

Here's a detailed look at Wrexham's top 10 earners…

10

Sam Smith

£15,000 per week

Sam Smith is just one of seven Wrexham players picking up £15,000 per week at The Racecourse, with the forward arriving in January 2025 from Reading.

He scored some vital goals to help Wrexham win promotion to the Championship and is under contract until 2028.

9

Liberato Cacace

£15,000 per week

Liberato Cacace was Wrexham’s only 2025 signing made outside of England, with the New Zealand intermational arriving from Italian side Empoli.

The left-back cost just over £2m and put pen to paper on a three-year deal in Wales.

8

Matty James

£15,000 per week

Wrexham didn’t pay a penny to sign Matty James in 2024 after he became a free agent following his Bristol City exit.

The central midfielder’s experience was key in the League One promotion run in.

7

Callum Doyle

£15,000 per week

Callum Doyle is actually one of Wrexham’s most expensive signings of all time, but he’s down the list when it comes to the club’s highest paid players.

Signed from Premier League giants Manchester City for £5m, Doyle picks up £780,000 per season in Wales.

6

Ben Sheaf

£15,000 per week

After starring for Coventry City over four years, Ben Sheaf swapped the Midlands for Wales, joining Wrexham on deadline day in September 2025.

He reportedly cost Reynolds and McElhenney £6.5m and is under contract until 2028.

5

Josh Windass

£15,000 per week

After leaving Sheffield Wednesday at the end of the 2024/25 season, attacker Josh Windass penned a three-year contract at Wrexham.

The forward actually scored Wrexham’s first goal back in the second-tier away at Southampton.

4

Lewis O'Brien

£17,500 per week

Another marquee signing following the club’s promotion to the Championship was Lewis O’Brien, who arrived from Nottingham Forest in a £3m transfer.

His £910,000 per season deal in Wales runs until 2028.

3

Jay Rodriguez

£25,000 per week

Signed at the beginning of 2025 to help Wrexham to promotion, Jay Rodriguez is on a deal worth £1.3m per season at The Racecourse.

A striker with Premier League experience, Rodriguez’s contract expires in 2026.

2

Conor Coady

£25,000 per week

An England international, centre-back Conor Coady signed for Wrexham from Leicester City in a deal worth £2m.

He signed a two-year contract and was made a key part of Phil Parkinson’s plans straightaway.

1

Kieffer Moore

£30,000 per week

Top of the list as Wrexham’s highest paid player is Wales international Kieffer Moore.

An experienced Championship striker who has scored goals for Cardiff City, Bournemouth, Ipswich Town and Sheffield United in recent years, Moore is under contract until 2028.

Howe can unleash a bigger talent than Minteh in "dangerous" Newcastle star

Over the past five years, Newcastle United’s fixtures with Brighton & Hove Albion have become a compelling Premier League rivalry defined by fine margins, contrasting styles, and tactical discipline.

The Magpies have often found Brighton’s fluid attacking shape difficult to contain.

Their 3–0 defeat in March 2021 under Steve Bruce was a low point in the club’s modern history – a result that underlined the growing gulf between a stagnant Newcastle and an ascendant Brighton.

Eddie Howe’s appointment marked a turning point, and by March 2022, Newcastle struck back with a 2–1 victory at St James’ Park, signalling their resurgence.

That resurgence peaked in May 2023, when Howe’s side thrashed Brighton 4–1 in one of their most complete performances of the season – a result that helped secure Champions League qualification.

But since then, Brighton have regained the upper hand.

Evan Ferguson’s stunning hat-trick in September 2023 sealed a 3–1 win at the Amex, while the Seagulls edged a dramatic 2–1 FA Cup victory after extra time at St James’ Park in 2025.

When the sides met in October 2024, Brighton’s 1–0 away win continued their dominance, meaning Newcastle have managed just one win in their last six meetings.

The rivalry has become symbolic of Newcastle’s fluctuating form – moments of brilliance offset by costly lapses – and no player embodies that sting of regret quite like Yankuba Minteh.

Why Yankuba Minteh was sold by Newcastle

Minteh’s story is one that still frustrates many Newcastle fans.

The Gambian winger, just 21 years old, joined the Magpies from Odense BK in 2023, instantly impressing with his blistering pace and low centre of gravity.

But due to the club’s rush to remain PSR compliant in the summer of 2024, he was sold to Brighton for a fee of around £30m – a decision that has since come back to haunt them.

Since making the move to the south coast, Minteh has thrived.

This season, he has already played seven times for Brighton, registering one goal and two assists, while his underlying performances show his growing maturity.

His dribbling, directness, and unpredictability have made him one of the Premier League’s most exciting young wingers.

The most symbolic moment came last season when he scored against his former club in Brighton’s home win over Newcastle.

His celebration – part praise, part provocation towards the travelling Toon Army – encapsulated both his passion and his defiance.

It was a reminder of what Newcastle had lost: a young winger capable of changing games.

Minteh’s 2024/25 campaign ended with six goals in 32 appearances, establishing him as a key piece in Fabian Hurzeler’s system.

Internationally, he continues to shine for Gambia, scoring seven goals in 19 caps since making his debut in 2022.

His evolution at Brighton highlights Newcastle’s biggest frustration – selling a player they had barely begun to utilise.

And now, as the two clubs prepare to meet again in the 3pm kick-off this Saturday, Minteh stands as both a warning and an inspiration for Eddie Howe: talent must be trusted early, or it risks flourishing elsewhere.

Newcastle's answer to Minteh

While Minteh is thriving in Brighton blue, Newcastle may already have their answer in Anthony Elanga.

The Swedish international has endured a mixed start to life on Tyneside since his move from Nottingham Forest, but recent performances suggest he’s turning a corner.

Elanga, 23, has been central to Howe’s efforts to reignite Newcastle’s attack.

Though the Magpies have been solid defensively – keeping six clean sheets already this season – their forward line has struggled to find rhythm.

Elanga’s energy, pace, and ability to stretch defences could be the key to unlocking that potential.

His performances have improved as the season progresses: sharper off the ball, more decisive in transition, and increasingly willing to take on defenders.

It’s that blend of directness and discipline that earned him the tag of “dangerous” by analyst Ben Mattinson – traits that made Elanga a standout at Forest and once an attacking outlet under Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

Much like Minteh, Elanga thrives when given space to run at full-backs, but his tactical versatility has allowed Howe to use him both wide and centrally.

His developing chemistry with Nick Woltemade gives Newcastle new dimensions going forward.

Crucially, Elanga represents something Newcastle lost with Minteh – fearless attacking intent.

The Swede’s willingness to press high, carry the ball aggressively, and exploit space behind defenders fits perfectly into Howe’s transition-heavy system.

With Brighton’s full-backs pushing high, Elanga’s pace could prove decisive in this weekend’s clash.

If he can produce the kind of form that once made him one of Manchester United’s brightest young prospects, Newcastle may finally have their revenge.

He already dazzled last term with 17 goals and assists in the Premier League for Nottingham Forest, as per Sofascore, far eclipsing Minteh’s own record of ten goal involvements on the south coast.

For Howe, this fixture is more than another Premier League match – it’s a test of progress, identity, and belief in youth.

Minteh’s success elsewhere may still sting, but in Elanga, Newcastle have a player ready to define their future rather than haunt their past.

He'd make Bowen unplayable: "Incredible" boss leading race for West Ham job

This season is going the way West Ham United fans hoped it would be in the summer.

Instead of leaving their lacklustre form behind last year and making strides in the Premier League, they look worse than they have in a long time.

Graham Potter oversaw five losses from six games before the club officially decided to part ways with the former Chelsea and Brighton head coach on Saturday morning.

So, it’s good news that the Hammers are being linked with a manager who could not only turn things around, but also get the likes of Jarrod Bowen firing.

West Ham's search to replace Graham Potter

West Ham have been linked with a host of potential Potter replacements in recent weeks, with one of the most consistent being Frank Lampard.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

The Englishman didn’t impress with Chelsea or Everton, but so far, he seems to be doing a good job with Coventry City in the Championship.

On the other hand, Slaven Bilic is currently out of work, but there remains a certain romanticism around the reports linking him with a return to the club.

However, there is another, far more impressive manager being linked with the Hammers, someone who could make Bowen even more unplayable.

At least that is according to a recent report from Claret & Hugh, which claims West Ham are still interested in Nuno Espírito Santo.

In fact, the report has revealed that the Portuguese coach is now the leading candidate to replace Potter.

Nuno would be an exciting appointment for West Ham, and based on his previous work, someone who could help make Bowen even better.

Why Nuno should replace Potter

Before getting into the other reasons Nuno would be an excellent hire for West Ham, why do we think he’d be able to get even more out of Bowen?

Simply put, on top of adding defensive solidity to Nottingham Forest, the Portuguese coach also helped make several of their attackers more dangerous.

For example, in the 22/23 season, when he spent time with Newcastle United and then Forest, Chris Wood scored just four goals in 29 games.

Then, the following season, in which Nuno joined halfway through, the tally increased to 15 goals and one assist in 35 games, which was then improved upon last year with a total of 23 goal involvements in 40 games.

There was also an improvement in Anthony Elanga’s numbers, with him producing 14 goal involvements in 39 games during the 2023/24 season and then 18 in 43 games the following year.

So, just imagine what the former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss would be able to do with the West Ham star, who is a better player than both.

Finally, in addition to improving players, the “incredible” manager, as dubbed by Sky Sports’ Sam Obaseki, has a proven track record of taking clubs that people predict for relegation into European football.

So there is no reason he couldn’t do that for a third time with the East Londoners.

Ultimately, while some may have their doubts about Nuno, he’s a Premier League-proven manager and one that could help supercharge the Hammers’ best attackers after the club decided to part ways with Potter.

PIF have overpaid for "mega-money" Newcastle signing & it's not Woltemade

The 2025 summer transfer window was a crazy period for Newcastle United. Eddie Howe’s side lost their star player, Alexander Isak, at the 11th hour, and whilst they had already replaced him with Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa, it took them some time to land their new pair of number nines.

The two strikers were not the only additions the Magpies made in the summer, but they were arguably the most important. With Isak and Callum Wilson leaving, there was certainly a need to add quality depth up front to combat the loss of their former strikers.

Whilst Wissa is yet to play a game due to injury, Woltemade has really hit the ground running.

How Woltemade and Isak’s Newcastle starts compare

There was always going to be lots of pressure on German striker Woltemade. The former Stuttgart star was a target for Bayern Munich too, but Newcastle ended up paying a club-record fee of £69m to secure his services.

However, it has been a fast start to life in the Premier League for the 23-year-old.

He’s only played four Premier League games so far, but has already bagged three goals in that time, including a strike on his debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Interestingly, that is the exact same start that Isak had in that famous Black and White shirt. In the same number of Premier League games, the Swede had bagged three goals, which included a strike on his debut.

To build on that even further, they both scored on their debut, a game in which both players came off the bench. They didn’t find the back of the net on their second appearance, but in the two that followed, each of the strikers scored.

There are certainly some interesting parallels between Woltemade and Isak’s first four games as a Newcastle player.

Despite Bayern’s honorary president, Uli Hoeness, suggesting the German “isn’t worth” the money they spent – having also been criticised by Karl-Heinz Rummenigge for their ‘idiotic’ deal – he’s made a fast start to life at St James’ Park.

However, the same cannot be said for another of their summer signings, who hasn’t performed at his best yet.

Newcastle’s summer signing who has struggled

Moving to a club the size of Newcastle is always going to be a challenge, especially after the PIF takeover back in 2021. Yet, Woltemade seems to have dealt with that pressure well, and Magpies fans will be hoping he can continue that form.

One of their summer signings hasn’t quite hit the ground running in the same way. Anthony Elanga, the Magpies’ “mega money” signing, as Statman Dave put it, has certainly not found his best form at St James’ Park yet.

Elanga cost the North Eastern giants £55m this summer, a fee which Jamie O’Hara said was an “inflated valuation” of the Swedish star.

Indeed, in ten games so far for the club, the former Manchester United academy graduate is yet to score or set up a goal. He did pick up the player of the match award in the Champions League, gameweek two.

Yet, the winger certainly has lots to offer his new club, despite the slow start he’s made in that famous Black and White shirt. He was excellent for Forest last season, racking up 17 goals and assists in 38 top-flight games.

That included this sublime solo effort against Man United.

On top of that, his underlying numbers from last term highlight his quality.

For example, Elanga averaged 1.8 chances created and made 3.2 ball recoveries per 90 minutes, showing how good he is both on and off the ball.

So far, Elanga has not lived up to the huge price tag that Newcastle spent on him, with there perhaps a feeling that the club and PIF might have overpaid, considering his current market value only rests at €42m (£36m), as per Transfermarkt.

Certainly, though, Newcastle fans will be hoping the Swede’s Magpies career can take more of an upward trend and he can start chipping in with goal involvement.

Not Eze: Arteta can fix Odegaard blow by unleashing Arsenal's "foul magnet"

Injuries. The bane of Mikel Arsenal’s life. The bane of Arsenal’s very existence over the last year.

It’s not too preposterous to suggest that without them last season, the Gunners would have secured the title over Liverpool.

Arteta is certainly not one to make excuses when they have players on the treatment table but the fact of the matter is, they missed Gabriel, Kai Havertz and chiefly, Bukayo Saka, to major hamstring injuries.

Combine that with Martin Odegaard’s ankle problem a year ago and they were, if you pardon the pun, severely hamstrung by the events that played out.

Fast forward to the current campaign and, despite injecting nearly £300m into the player squad, adding more depth to Arteta’s ranks, they are feeling the effects of it again.

Havertz has been out since August, William Saliba has also missed a period of a few games and Saka endured another little niggle of his own too. That’s without mentioning Noni Madueke, Saka’s backup, who is also out injured.

So, when Odegaard limped from the field during their 2-0 win over West Ham last weekend, you could hear the drones inside the Emirates Stadium.

The latest on Martin Odegaard's injury

This has been a particularly troubling year for the Arsenal skipper. During an early-season international break last term, he suffered an ankle injury while playing for Norway and he’s arguably not been the same since.

That problem kept the skipper out for a few months and even when he did return, there was a sense that the Arsenal midfielder didn’t feel comfortable. He didn’t trust his ankle enough to strike through the ball cleanly when taking shots. It also impacted his playmaking ability.

The numbers below rubberstamp that fact. From 2023/24 to 2024/25, his base numbers were way down on what you would expect.

It’s typical, therefore, that as soon as Odegaard began to find his form again, he was struck down by another injury.

In the brief glimpses we’ve seen of the former Real Madrid man this season, there have been promising signs, no less so than against Olympiacos in the Champions League.

During Arsenal’s 2-0 win, the Norwegian simply ran the show, supplying the pre-assist for Gabriel Martinelli’s opener and then carving open the defence to assist Saka’s late strike.

It was vintage Odegaard but he was soon injured again, sparking fears that this could be a Jack Wilshere situation all over again.

Indeed, against West Ham last weekend, he hobbled off for the third successive league match, creating a little bit of history in the process. Worryingly, he became the first player in Premier League history to be substituted in the first half of three consecutive fixtures.

So, what’s the problem? Well, he left the Emirates wearing a brace on his knee last week and subsequent scans showed that he had suffered a medial collateral ligament injury. As a result, he pulled out of Norway’s fixtures over the ongoing break.

A suspected timeline of return has not yet been revealed, sparking fears that Odegaard could be out for a number of weeks.

How Arsenal can solve their Odegaard injury blow

The most likely solution for Arsenal will be Eberechi Eze. Signed in the summer, it was widely expected that the mega-money £67.5m arrival would play out on the left-hand side.

After all, Arteta required upgrades on the likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard and he thought he’d signed one here.

Yet, Eze’s initial performances on the left lacked a bit of sparkle. They were solid enough but it was clear he was playing in a role he doesn’t enjoy quite as much. Against Bilbao in the Champions League, he produced just one key pass, down on his 2024/25 seasonal average of 1.7 while playing more centrally for Crystal Palace.

It’s in that central role where Eze has featured across Arsenal’s last three games. The difference has been noticeable.

He found the net against Port Vale and then versus Newcastle, he was desperately unlucky not to score a couple, denied by Nick Pope fabulously on two occasions. Against West Ham, supporters were cruelly robbed of seeing him line up alongside Odegaard for very long when the latter went off.

The scorer of 14 goals and the provider of 11 assists last season, the England international is certainly the most obvious candidate to replace Odegaard.

Yet, in two Hale End gems, Arteta has two more luxurious options: Ethan Nwaneri, who played regularly in the Odegaard role during pre-season and the generational Max Dowman.

It’s unlikely that Dowman is given a start but this feels like an ideal opportunity to give the 15-year-old game time in a role where the club envisions his future.

To date, the sparkling teenager has only been seen at first-team level on the right flank, starring in pre-season when he notably won a penalty against Newcastle, before featuring for 27 minutes in Premier League action from that role.

Dowman may not have played many league minutes just yet but he’s still made a big impact, becoming the second-youngest player in the division’s history and winning a penalty in the 5-0 win over Leeds.

As Mikel Merino commented earlier this year, the youngster is already “unbelievable”. Fellow midfielder Declan Rice has also waxed lyrical. “I’ve never seen a 15-year-old so comfortable around the first team, it’s insane.” Quite.

What Dowman is doing is not normal. Not even Nwaneri burst onto the scene in such a way. He was 15 when he debuted but had to wait another few years for regular opportunities. This kid is already getting them. Do we have another Lamine Yamal on our hands?

Expectations must be tempered and we must be cautious here. Merino’s next comment was to remind everyone, “he’s only 15, so obviously he has many things to learn.”

But, what makes this young starlet so special? Well, he’s got the ability to score and assist at will, netting 19 in 23 last season and creating five goals. Meanwhile, his ability to glide past players with ease has already made him a target for defenders.

Data analyst Ben Mattinson outlines how the teen is already a “foul magnet” and that’s something Arteta has also picked up on.

Commenting on Dowman’s development earlier this season, the Spaniard said: “He’s so used to it [being kicked by defenders] that now he knows to let the referee deal with it and my teammates probably to defend me, and I will carry on playing.”

So, while the Hale End prodigy is unlikely to start while Odegaard is injured, Arteta must use it as an opportunity to give further minutes to the club’s biggest academy talent.

Vincent Kompany assures Bayern Munich 'incredibly hungry' to win DFB-Pokal as even opposing coach sees 'desperate' treble desire in Harry Kane & Co

Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany reiterated that winning the DFB-Pokal is not just a dream for the fans but a vital objective for the team this season, after Harry Kane’s brace inspired a 4-1 victory over Koln in the competition. Koln manager Lukas Kwasniok echoed Kompany’s words, saying it is evident that Bayern are “desperate for the treble”.

  • Bayern's unbeaten run underlines treble ambitions

The 4-1 victory over Koln ensured Bayern's incredible winning run continues. Having won all 14 of their matches so far in all competitions, Kompany's men have now broken a European record set by AC Milan in the 1992-93 season.

Despite losing key attacking players such as Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sane and club legend Thomas Muller over the summer, and missing out on primary transfer targets like Nick Woltemade, Bayern have remained competitive on all fronts. Much of the credit is going to manager Kompany, whose tactical acumen and meticulous training methods have instilled discipline, sacrifice, and perseverance within the squad. His man-management has also played a crucial role, helping players such as Kane and Konrad Laimer flourish so far this term.

Bayern’s dominant performances and consistency have reignited talk of a possible treble, reminiscent of their historic 2019-20 campaign.

  • Bayern 'hungry and want more' after another win

Speaking ahead the midweek victory, Kompany emphasised his side are taking the cup competition seriously as they target a clean sweep of trophies. "My team is incredibly hungry for the trophy," he said. "It's not just the fans who want the title, it's something we live and breathe."

He repeated that message after the win, saying: "The records come when we approach every game with the mentality of wanting to win. That's the first thing. And the second is quality. The lads are fit and you can see a lot of automatic movements. They're hungry and want more! That's helping us right now."

His words were reiterated by Jonathan Tah, who told reporters: "We're always hungry, we always want to win and we're never satisfied. We're happy today, and tomorrow we'll focus on the next game."

Koln manager Kwasniok acknowledged his counterpart’s words and reaffirmed Bayern’s treble ambitions, saying: "They desperately want the treble."

Bundesliga champions pull off comeback DFB-Pokal comeback

Koln took a surprise lead in the game after the haf-hour mark when Bayern failed to track a deep run from Ragnar Ache, who met Johannesson’s cross from a set piece and headed it past Urbig. The lead did not last long as Laimer drove up the pitch and found Josip Stanisic, whose shot was saved by the Koln goalkeeper, but the rebound was tapped in by Luis Diaz.

Kane showed his perseverance and work rate when he dispossessed a Koln defender before swivelling and firing a shot into the net. He got his second of the night in the 64th minute, rising high to head the ball in from a Joshua Kimmich corner. In the 72nd minute, Michael Olise rounded off the score after starting a flowing counterattack from the right. Aleksander Pavlovic found Diaz on the left, who squared the ball for Olise to poke it past Zieler, finishing off the move he had started.

“What I love about this team is that we stay calm. We clawed our way back into the game," Kompany said. “It was a great fight, a real cup match. I'm very happy with the fighting spirit of our lads. We came back from 1-0 down and remained dangerous in the second half. We kept the intensity high. Koln kept clawing themselves back into the game. I'm very happy. We already had great chances in the first half. Koln believed in themselves and fought for the second balls. At times, we didn't execute our set pieces quickly enough. We were always dangerous when we had speed in our possession. It's important for us to use our squad, and we still have players returning. Now, we have three games in six days, so we'll only be regenerating. Leverkusen and PSG will be tough, but we deserve to be confident."
