A dream for McAtee: Nottingham Forest plot swoop for "explosive" £40m star

It wouldn’t be hyperbole to say that, so far, this summer has been one of Nottingham Forest’s most memorable for some time.

Nuno Espirito-Santo’s side haven’t done anything of much note on the pitch, but there has been plenty happening off of it.

For example, the club were embroiled in a dispute with Tottenham Hotspur, which they appear to have won, over Morgan Gibbs-White; they’ve secured their place in the Europa League, and to top it off, they’ve made several exciting signings.

However, there is no sign of the club slowing down, as, on top of closing in on James McAtee, they appear keen on someone who’d be a perfect teammate for him.

Forest target dream McAtee teammate

After securing the services of Igor Jesus, Dan Ndoye and Jair Cunha, it appears that the next player on Forest’s transfer list this summer is McAtee.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The Manchester City academy product impressed in spells last season, scoring seven goals in just 936 minutes of first-team action, and it looks like he’ll be making his way to the City Ground for just over £20m, with personal terms already agreed.

While that would be enough business in one window for many other teams, the Tricky Trees aim to make at least one more addition before the window closes next month.

England's JamesMcAteereacts

At least that is according to a recent report from Sky Sports, which claims Nottingham Forest are still very interested in Omari Hutchinson.

The report has revealed that, while the Tricky Trees saw their previous offer of £35m rejected, they are still discussing the possibility of another bid.

If the club do go back in for the Englishman, they’ll have to stump up at least £40m, which is what he’s valued by Ipswich Town.

It could be a complicated and costly transfer to get over the line, but Hutchinson’s ability and potential make it one worth fighting for, especially as he’d be brilliant with McAtee.

Why Hutchinson would be a perfect teammate for McAtee

The first reason that Hutchinson would be an excellent teammate for McAtee at Forest is the simple fact that they’re already teammates for England’s U21.

Spain's MarcPubillin action with England's Omari Hutchinson

The City gem has made 24 appearances for the team and captained them to glory at this summer’s European Championships.

For his part, the Ipswich ace has made ten appearances for the junior side, in which he’s produced six goal involvements and was a key part of the team’s success this summer, starting five of the six games, including the final.

Not only does this mean the pair will already have a great relationship and understanding of one another’s game prior to joining the Tricky Trees, but also that they can thrive in the same lineup together.

Another reason why the former Chelsea gem could end up being a perfect teammate for the Salford-born ace is his positional versatility.

The 21-year-old’s ability to play on either wing and in the middle of the park should give him plenty of opportunities to start alongside McAtee, and therefore further develop their relationship.

However, it also means that Nuno can play the Redhill-born dynamo in place of the 22-year-old when he needs to rest and therefore reduce the risk of injury.

Ipswich Town'sOmariHutchinsonreacts

Finally, while the “explosive” Ipswich talent, as dubbed by one Arsenal content creator, was somewhat limited by the team he was playing in last season, he still managed to produce five goal involvements in 31 league games.

Moreover, he showed glimpses of something quite special at times, like that goal against Manchester United.

Ultimately, while it won’t be cheap, Forest would be wise to sign Hutchinson alongside McAtee this summer, as the pair could develop a brilliant partnership at the City Ground.

Watch out DCL: Leeds are now producing "one of England's best prospects"

For a free-flowing team that confidently strolled to the Championship title last season, Daniel Farke’s Leeds United have unfortunately misplaced their shooting boots in the Premier League so far.

Indeed, the entertaining Whites fired home a devastating 95 strikes in total last campaign, as 100 points were also tallied up.

Now, from their opening three games up a division, they have just a paltry single goal to shout about, with a mixed bag of four points next to their name.

Farke will just be praying it’s early-season nerves holding his wasteful team back, with lots more expected of Dominic Calvert-Lewin as he acclimatises to his new environment at Elland Road, after becoming synonymous with ex-employers Everton.

Calvert-Lewin's early Leeds struggles

After lining up for the Toffees 273 times across nine seasons, Calvert-Lewin walked away from Merseyside this summer for a fresh opportunity in West Yorkshire.

Everton did try to tempt the ex-Sheffield United striker to stay with a new, extended deal, but Farke and Co proved to be a more enticing next step, as the 11-time England international now attempts to recapture his best form in front of goal after an injury-ravaged few campaigns at Goodison Park.

Leeds will hope they can move past these recurring niggles and reawaken a clinical monster, with journalist Patrick Boyland once labelling the attacker as “outstanding” when he was scoring goals for fun at the Toffees.

In total, an impressive 71 goals would come Calvert-Lewin’s way at Everton, with 16 of those coming during just one Premier League season.

Yet, the early signs at the moment suggest that the Sheffield-born forward is bereft of confidence in front of goal, having endured a nightmare day at the office against Sheffield Wednesday recently.

Staring down the barrel of an embarrassing exit in the EFL Cup to Sheffield Wednesday, Farke would throw on Calvert-Lewin for the final 30 minutes of action, hopeful that he could be the difference-maker on his debut run-out.

Instead, he depressingly fluffed his lines whenever the pressure was ramped up, with four big chances spurned, before he also missed a penalty kick to hand the Owls a shock Cup win.

Farke could well feel it’s necessary to keep Calvert-Lewin on his toes now, knowing he’s still a little rusty, with a rising starlet perhaps pushed up for more first-team chances.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

The Leeds prospect who could compete with Calvert-Lewin

Farke was the manager at the Elland Road helm who brought Archie Gray into the senior spotlight.

Gray would then go on to be a £40m sale to Tottenham Hotspur after seriously impressing throughout Leeds’ promotion-near miss.

Amazingly, the majority of his family members will be hoping for a similar rise for brother Harry Gray, who has already made waves in the first team picture.

With promotion all but wrapped up last season, the former Norwich City boss threw the 16-year-old sensation into the first-team mix, with a memorable eight-minute cameo handed to him against Stoke City in April.

It wasn’t just purely sentiment that gifted Gray a chance to strut his stuff with the likes of Manor Solomon and the other promotion heroes, however, with the teenager already tipped to have an immensely bright future in the game by analyst Ben Mattinson.

Indeed, he boldly stated that he is “one of England’s best prospects in his generation” after briefly lining up against the Potters.

The table above proves that Mattinson’s words aren’t just hyperbole either, with the 16-year-old already up to seven goals from ten games for the U21s at Premier League 2 level, away from collecting a lethal 15 strikes overall at youth level.

Calvert-Lewin could only dream of being in such a rich vein of goalscoring form himself, with a weak three strikes next to his name in the main Premier League last season.

Of course, just for his experience alone, Leeds will continue to try and get a tune out of their new marksman.

But, in the long run, do not rule out Gray making strides in the senior picture, having also been previously branded an “unbelievable” talent by former Leeds favourite Dominic Matteo.

West Ham can forget Lampard by hiring "the best manager in the world"

They may have won last time out, but things aren’t looking great for West Ham United.

The East Londoners have lost two of their three Premier League games so far and sit just a point above the relegation zone.

Unsurprisingly, then, a number of managers have been linked with Graham Potter’s job, including Frank Lampard.

WestHamUnited manager GrahamPotter and assistant manager Bruno Saltor

The former Chelsea legend may well be a good replacement, but if the Hammers really want to take a step forward, they should be bold and hire another legend of the game.

Why Graham Potter should be fired

It’s not even been a year since West Ham decided to hire Potter, and while some may argue it’s therefore too soon to fire him, the results would suggest otherwise.

The former Chelsea boss has managed 23 games since getting the job and somehow managed to win just six, losing 12 and drawing the other five.

In other words, he has an average of a point per game in East London, and on top of that, he’s not even delivered the slick, attacking and entertaining football fans hoped he would.

The Irons have scored 29 goals during his tenure, which is an average of 1.26 per game and conceded 36, which comes out to an average of 1.56 per game.

In contrast, his predecessor, Julen Lopetegui, averaged 1.18 points per match while he was in charge, and David Moyes before him averaged 1.49 points per match and won a European trophy.

Whichever way you look at it, Potter’s role as manager of West Ham United feels untenable, and it would surely be better for the club to look for his replacement now, rather than let this drag on.

With that said, there are better candidates than Lampard, including one legendary former player who is currently out of a job.

The manager West Ham should hire over Lampard

Now, there is every chance Lampard would be a good hire for West Ham, as for all the criticism he’s received over the years, he appears to be doing a good job with Coventry City, winning two and drawing two games this season.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast’s Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

However, with that said, the former Chelsea star doesn’t feel like a particularly ambitious target for the Hammers, unlike the manager they should be going after: Xavi.

Yes, the coach the Irons should be going all out for is none other than the Barcelona legend, and while some may scoff at such a target, he’s been out of work since leaving the Catalan side last year, and with the continual growth of the Premier League, why couldn’t the club make a tempting proposal?

Not only would the 45-year-old be a hugely exciting and image-changing hire, but he’s also a far better candidate than many others that have been linked in recent weeks, including Lampard.

For example, during his tenure with the Spanish giants, he oversaw 143 games, of which he won 91, drew 23 and lost just 29, averaging 2.07 points per game.

Moreover, “the best manager in the world,” as Joan Laporta dubbed him, made sure Barca played an attacking and exciting brand of football, which saw them score a whopping 280 goals, or 1.95 per game.

Finally, he is also a proven winner, overseeing the club’s first La Liga win in four years in the 22/23 season and winning the Spanish Super Cup in the same season.

Ultimately, it would be a difficult task, but West Ham should be doing all they can to convince Xavi that this is a project he should be taking up, as he’d be a monumental upgrade on Potter and a better option than Lampard.

Bumrah joins Mumbai Indians squad ahead of home game against RCB

It’s not, however, clear yet if Bumrah will be available for selection straightaway

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Apr-2025

There is no word on when Jasprit Bumrah will be available for selection•BCCI

In a major boost for the struggling Mumbai Indians (MI), Jasprit Bumrah has linked up with the squad ahead of their IPL 2025 game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at home on Monday. It is understood that Bumrah joined MI on Saturday, after getting clearance from the BCCI’s medical staff at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, where he had been doing his rehab since January following a stress-related discomfort in his lower back. He will now coordinate with the MI support staff, led by Mahela Jayawardene, to work out his comeback schedule.A critical part of the plan for Bumrah’s return originally included him playing a practice match or two to test his fitness. It could not be confirmed whether he managed to do it at the Centre of Excellence or will do it with MI.

The last update about Bumrah was on April 4, when it was reported that he would miss the game against RCB at the very least before returning to action.Bumrah had been building his bowling workload in recent weeks at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and, as of April 4, was understood to be close to taking the final round of fitness tests.Bumrah has been cautious about his recovery, and wants to ensure he is totally fit before returning to action. This is keeping in mind India’s five-Test series in England, starting on June 28.MI have so far played four games in IPL 2025, winning one and losing three, and have handed debuts to Satyanarayana Raju, Vignesh Puthur and Ashwani Kumar in Bumrah’s absence, with Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar leading the attack and captain Hardik Pandya the other seam-bowling option in the line-up.Bumrah has played all his IPL cricket for MI, starting in 2013 and picking up 165 wickets in 133 matches over the years. The only IPL season he missed since he started playing was in 2023, when he had a back injury. He suffered the latest injury during the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Sydney on January 4. Bumrah was subsequently ruled out of the Champions Trophy, which India won last month. This is the first time Bumrah has gone down with a back injury since his surgery in March 2023.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard in line for Rangers return after Russell Martin is finally sacked after DISASTROUS 17-game spell that ended with beleaguered manager needing police escort

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is reportedly in line for a return to Rangers, with the Scottish Premiership giants in the market for a new coach after parting company with Russell Martin. Disgruntled supporters in Glasgow finally got their wish when seeing Martin’s disastrous reign brought to a close after just 17 games. The Gers could now turn to a familiar face in a bid to get the club back on track.

Dismal record: Why Martin was sacked by Rangers

Ex-MK Dons, Swansea City and Southampton boss Martin only took charge at Ibrox over the summer. His ball-playing philosophy was considered to be a good fit for Rangers, but many fans had their doubts from the off. Those fears proved to be well founded, with Martin stumbling out of the blocks and never getting into his stride.

A 1-1 draw with Falkirk proved to be the final straw, with Rangers left languishing in eighth spot after picking up just eight points from seven top-flight fixtures this season. They have just one league win to their name and are already 11 points adrift of table-topping Hearts, while trailing Old Firm rivals Celtic by nine points.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportPolice escort before departure confirmed

Furious Gers followers surrounded the team bus following another abject display at Falkirk, with Martin requiring a police escort as he made his way out of the stadium and into a waiting car. Speculation quickly surfaced regarding a managerial change.

That news was confirmed in a statement on Rangers’ , which read: “While all transition periods require some time, results have not met the club’s expectations. Assistant head coach, Matt Gill, and first-team coach, Mike Williamson, will also be departing. Russell and his staff have worked exceptionally hard throughout their time at the club. We thank them for their efforts and wish them well for the future.”

Could title winner Gerrard return to Ibrox?

Martin won only five of his 17 matches at the helm, with more disappointing results being endured in European competition. His brand of football did not live up to expectations, with his approach considered to be passive, and the Gers board were left with little choice but to wield the axe.

A suitable successor to Martin is now being sought. According to , Gerrard is one of those being considered. The ex-England captain cut his coaching teeth with the Gers in 2018 and led them to the Premiership title in 2020-21 – their only championship win since 2011. He left in 2021 for Aston Villa.

However, his return to the Premier League did not play out as planned, with 40 games over 11 months spent in the West Midlands, while struggles were also endured in the Middle East with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq. Gerrard left his role there in January and has remained out of management ever since.

Getty Images SportWhat McCoist said about Gerrard being reappointed

He is still held in high regard by Rangers supporters and would be welcomed back with open arms. Gers icon Ally McCoist told GOAL of a possible return to Glasgow for Gerrard when speculation first surfaced towards the end of last season: “Absolutely I could, yeah. Because of Steven’s success in winning the league at the club, it would be a possibility. He is obviously very well thought of after winning not just a title, but a very important title.”

McCoist has since said of Gerrard: “It’s absolutely vital that his next job is the right one. It didn’t quite work out at Villa or in Saudi. It’s similar to Frank Lampard – his move to Coventry has been crucial in getting his managerial career back on track. Steven’s in that same position. His next step needs to be spot on.”

Derby in 8-club battle for "special" ace who’s scored 3 goals this season

Derby County are reportedly in an eight-club battle to complete the signing of a player who has enjoyed a productive start to the season.

Eustace "delighted" with Derby draw

The Rams picked up a 1-1 draw at home to Bristol City on Friday evening, earning their first Championship point of the season and now sitting outside the relegation zone.

Speaking over the weekend, Derby manager John Eustace had good things to say about the result, no doubt being buoyed by what he saw.

“It’s about the squad, it’s about 46 games, not three games, and we’re delighted to get a point. We would have liked all three. I don’t think Bristol caused us any problems at all, apart from the free-kick at the end and their goal, which could have been stopped.

“So the first half an hour is really positive. When you’ve lost two games in a row and you go a goal down, it’s always difficult from a confidence point of view, but this group we never give up, they’ll keep going, and it’s a really good thing to have.

“I thought first half an hour, I thought we were excellent. I think we have to remember that we’re off the back of two defeats, which isn’t easy, and then we you go a goal down, you know it’s always going to be very difficult.”

Derby could do with further signings before the end of the summer transfer window next Monday, however, and a new update has emerged in that respect.

Derby battling seven clubs to sign "special" ace

According to a fresh claim from Football Insider, Chesterfield Town attacker Armando Dobra is a transfer “target” for Derby this summer. The Rams are far from alone in showing an interest, however, with Portsmouth, Oxford United, Barnsley, Luton Town, Bolton Wanderers, Blackpool, and Reading also in the mix to snap him up.

Dobra could be a great addition for Derby, even though some may have doubts about his ability to make the step up from a lower league.

The 24-year-old has already scored three goals in all competitions this season, highlighting his attacking prowess, and Francis Jeffers lauded him as a youngster back in 2021.

“I thought he was special tonight. He’s got loads of ability. He has to get his numbers better with assists and goals, which I’ve spoken to him about and everyone gets on at him about, but if we can get him on the ball in those danger areas then he’s going to be some player.”

Derby County make 8-figure bid to sign international at the top of his game

This is their third bid for the player.

4 ByCallum Kemp Aug 21, 2025

Derby clearly need more attacking quality, even though five goals in three league games this season is a respectable return, and if they can beat the other seven clubs to Dobra’s signature, it could prove to be a coup over time.
