Marc Skinner insists Ella Toone AND Jess Park can both fit into Man Utd's XI as Red Devils boss outlines plans for Lionesses duo

Ella Toone and Jess Park can both fit into Man Utd's XI, according to head coach Marc Skinner, after Park's shock deadline day move from Man City.

  • Park joined Man Utd in shock deadline day move
  • Ex-Man City star best as a No.10, like Toone

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Red Devils brought Park over from the blue side of Manchester in the final hours of the summer transfer window, while sending fellow England star Grace Clinton the other way. At times, Skinner struggled to fit both Toone and Clinton into his starting line-up, with both arguably at their best as No.10s. However, he believes things can be different with this England duo.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Park largely played as a creative midfielder during her time with Man City and it has often been there that she has shone for the Lionesses, too. She can, though, play in a variety of roles, including off both wings or even as a No.9.

  • WHAT SKINNER SAID

Asked about the different threat Park could offer to opponents when playing in the No.10 role instead of Toone this season, Skinner was quick to explain that it doesn't have to be a case of one or the other. "They can play together," he said in his press conference on Wednesday.

"It's not about building walls around these players. It's about giving them a framework where they can then move within, which creates uncertainty for defenders. That's what I want them to do. I don't want them to be rigid because that bores me a little bit. I want to be able to open the fluidity of my team while also having control of structure and counter marking. If we can strike that, [Jess] is the perfect balance for that. It doesn't have to be either or. They can play together, as well as others."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Park made her Man Utd debut in Sunday's 4-0 win over Leicester, replacing Celin Bizet on the right wing for the final half an hour. The next week or so might present the potential for her to play in a more central role though, as the Red Devils have a lot of games coming up and, as such, may look to rest Toone somewhere.

'This was already a victory' – Man City star gets BAPTISED immediately after derby win over Man Utd following dazzling display at Etihad

Manchester City star Jeremy Doku was baptised almost immediately after the club's 3-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday. The winger enjoyed a dazzling display at the Etihad as Pep Guardiola's side won comfortably, and Doku claimed that the day was 'already a victory' before the whistle blew against Ruben Amorim's side.

Doku dazzles at Etihad

Per The Sun, the Belgium international left the Etihad for his baptism ceremony. Doku enjoyed a stunning display against United, providing two assists, and it appears that his appointment with a church font inspired him ahead of the game's start.

AdvertisementAFPProving a point

Doku has endured mixed fortunes to begin the season, and the clash with United was only his second start of four games. He has yet to complete 90 minutes, but his two assists against City's biggest rivals can only help his chances of becoming indispensable under Pep Guardiola.

Doku's 'victory' before kick-off

Doku was clearly excited about the ceremony, telling reporters: “If I can be honest, this was for me already a victory.

“Why? Because I knew that after the game I'm going to be baptised.

“Maybe that's why I felt like I was pushed. That's why I'm very happy with the performance as well.”

He added: “You can do that as a kid but normally it's meant for when you're older and you really realise what you're doing, so that's what I'm going to do.

“I was already excited before the game because I knew that this is a victory day.”

Sammy to take over as West Indies' all-format coach from April 2025

Already in charge of the white-ball teams, he will also take charge of the Test side replacing Andre Coley

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Dec-2024Daren Sammy has been named head coach of the West Indies men’s team across all formats. Sammy, who has been the coach of West Indies’ T20I and ODI teams since last year, will take charge of the Test side from April 2025 replacing Andre Coley, the CWI director of cricket Miles Bascombe announced in St Vincent.”It’s always an honour to represent West Indies in any format or any position. For me, this news is not something I was expecting,” Sammy said at the press conference.”Coaching was never something I saw myself doing but I must admit the way that it’s been going, I’ve developed a much stronger passion and a love for the job… I believe in processes, something that we’ve been able to do in the white-ball formats and, with this new role, I’ve already mapped out some of the areas and some of the processes that we’ll have to follow in order for us to be successful [in Test cricket]. I’m a patient man and once I trust that process and understand the requirement from the director of cricket, then the plan gets into action.”So I’m really excited about the added responsibility and the new journey, one that I think myself and my team will be prepared for.”Under Sammy’s leadership, West Indies have won 15 of 28 ODIs since May 2023, winning four of seven bilateral series. In T20Is, the team clinched four series at home – against India, England and South Africa – and lost to Sri Lanka, Australia (both away) and England (home) – this is not counting the ongoing series against Bangladesh. Overall, they have won 20 out of 35 T20Is played during this period. In Tests, West Indies have lost seven matches, and won and drawn two each under Coley since May 2023, their high point being the pulsating eight-run victory against Australia in the Brisbane Test in January this year. They have not won even one series in this phase though, and are at the bottom of the World Test Championship (WTC) points table.”Post our our current World Test Championship campaign, we are going to be expanding Mr Sammy’s role to encompass all formats,” Bascombe announced. “So when we host Australia next summer, Daren Sammy will be the head coach of all senior men’s teams. I want to take this opportunity to thank Andre Coley, who has served well.”He still has to complete his World Test Championship campaign in Pakistan, and he will have our full support. But again, I want to congratulate Mr Sammy. We have been quite impressed with the way that he has charted a course for our white-ball teams, and he has guided them towards consistency of performance, and that is exactly what we want to see in our Test team.”Before he took over the West Indies role, Sammy’s leadership skills, both as a captain and coach, were central to St Lucia Kings’ success in the CPL. In 2020, he captained an unfancied Kings side to the CPL final. In CPL 2021, he was appointed Kings’ T20 cricket consultant and brand ambassador. In 2022, Sammy took over from Andy Flower as head coach and led them to the Eliminator, where Kings lost to eventual champions Jamaica Tallawahs. At the PSL, Sammy had coached Peshawar Zalmi in 2020 and 2021 before being reappointed to the post for PSL 2023. Sammy had been a mainstay for the franchise since the PSL’s inception in 2016, and had been one of the most popular overseas figures in the league.

Man City seriously keen on signing Barcelona star, now preparing £69m bid

Manchester City are now seriously keen on signing a “world-class” Barcelona player, with a £69m offer currently being prepared, according to a report.

Man City set out to sign Walker replacement

With Kyle Walker leaving on loan to AC Milan last season, before going on to sign for AC Milan, Matheus Nunes has often been given the nod at right-back, and Pep Guardiola believes the 26-year-old has attributes that suit that position.

Guardiola said: “He can become a good right-back for the physicality. I think he’s not a player to play in the middle because he’s not clever enough, in composure. He has incredible skills and he’s learning a lot.”

However, there are doubts over whether the Portugal international can be trusted at right-back, given that it is not his natural position, and City have set out to bring in more of a like-for-like replacement for Walker.

Earlier this month, it was revealed the Blues hold an interest in Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento, but widespread recent reports suggest they are no longer set to pursue the 22-year-old, and an alternative option has now entered the frame.

Newcastle's Tino Livramento

Contact was made over a potential deal for Barcelona’s Jules Kounde earlier this week, and there has now been a new development on Man City’s pursuit of the defender.

According to a report from Spain, Man City are now seriously keen on signing Kounde, and such is their level of interest, they are now preparing a €80m (£69m) offer for his services.

Guardiola is determined to strengthen his backline this summer, and the Barca star has now emerged as his main target, but a deal will not be easy, given that he is locked in talks over a contract renewal to extend his stay at the Camp Nou.

Man City ready to submit £51m bid to sign top target to replace Ederson

Man City are now working on a deal to sign their top target this summer.

ByBrett Worthington Jul 22, 2025

The La Liga side are reluctant to sanction the Frenchman’s departure, but if the Blues make a formal offer, it could be difficult to refuse.

"World-class" Kounde could be ideal Walker heir

After enduring a rare disappointing campaign last season, City will be looking to compete for the Premier League title once again, and the 26-year-old is exactly the calibre of player they need to bring in.

Described as “world-class” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, the Paris-born defender was a vital player for Barcelona last term, making 32 appearances en-route to La Liga glory, while scoring the winning goal in the Copa del Rey final.

The France international’s attacking talents were on display throughout the campaign, also netting against Real Betis after making a fantastic marauding run.

Walker was, of course, well-known for his pace and ability to make an impact on the front foot, so Kounde could be a like-for-like replacement in that regard, and it is exciting news that City are now preparing an offer.

Pace riches give Sri Lanka hope on Gqeberha greentop

A fast bowler who has 25 Test wickets at 22.68 for the year (Lahiru Kumara), a left-arm swing bowler who averages 24.12 in South Africa (Vishwa Fernando), a skiddy right-arm quick with 68 career wickets at 25.97 (Asitha Fernando), and more good options on the bench.Sri Lanka have likely had better quicks than they have now – Chaminda Vaas took 355 Test wickets, and Lasith Malinga burned hot until the injuries overtook him. But Sri Lanka have probably never had the fast-bowling depth they currently command. In Durban, for example, they left out Kasun Rajitha, who himself averages 25.00 in South Africa and is probably their tallest bowler. They also omitted Milan Rathnayake, who made impressive strides – with bat and ball – in England earlier this year.Dhananjaya de Silva knows few other Sri Lanka captains have commanded these kinds of seam-bowling resources.”I’m very happy, because they know their games now, and what they need to do for the team,” de Silva said of his fast-bowling battery. “I think I need to give a lot of credit to Dimuth Karunaratne, because he was the previous captain, and it’s under his leadership that a lot of these bowlers started and developed. As captain I’m able to reap those rewards, so I’d like to give Dimuth aiya the credit for that.”Sri Lanka are about to begin a Test on a green-tinged South African surface, in Gqeberha, and although they may still choose to pick an XI that features their specialist spinner – Prabath Jayasuriya – they have the option of picking four seamers, as they had done at The Oval earlier this year, to excellent effect.Lahiru Kumara has taken 25 wickets in six Tests this year, at an average of 22.68•AFP/Getty Images

“So far we’re still talking about how many fast bowlers we will play and will only make a decision on that later,” de Silva said. “The track here is quite green.”I think in that England series we learned that we can win matches overseas with our pace attack. They’ve been improving day by day, and we saw the results of that at The Oval. We can’t blame our fast bowlers for the loss in Durban – that’s all on the batsmen, who got out for 40-odd. You can’t win a Test like that.”It was in fact in Karunaratne’s first series as captain that Vishwa took four wickets in a match that Sri Lanka won, in Gqeberha, in 2019. Vishwa isn’t the only Sri Lanka fast bowler in the likely XI for Thursday that has tasted success in South Africa, however. Kumara first burst into the international consciousness with a spectacular nip-backer at Newlands, which crashed into the stumps of no less a batter than Hashim Amla.Kumara has had more modest showings in South Africa since then, and has also been plagued by injuries, particularly with hamstring strains and tears. If he plays on Thursday, which seems exceedingly likely, he will have played seven Tests in 2024, which is his highest tally for a calendar year.”From what I see, Lahiru has been consistent in the last two years, and he’s played a lot of matches,” de Silva said. ” He’d been in and out of the team because of injuries, but now he’s been able to play consistently and learn what his strengths and weaknesses are. He’s able to back those strengths now because he’s played matches at a stretch. I think that’s the main thing that has contributed to his success.”The huge loss in Durban, de Silva said, was almost totally down to the failure of the batting group. Though he himself is a spinner, he’s been a fast-bowling captain, insisting that Sri Lanka play at least two quicks even at home, so they can be more competitive in SENA nations. He’s hoping to reap the rewards of that in Gqeberha.

Dream for Rodri: Pep driving Man City interest in £104m "powerhouse"

It’s all been rather quiet at Manchester City in recent weeks, but that is about to change.

In both January and early June, the Sky Blues were very active in the transfer market, getting players in ahead of the Club World Cup, with Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Aït-Nouri and Rayan Cherki all debuting stateside earlier this summer.

Manchester City manager PepGuardiolareacts

However, since Pep Guardiola’s team were ignominiously dumped out in the round of 16 by Al-Hilal in Orlando, not a lot to report either on or off the pitch.

James Trafford has re-joined the club from Burnley, taking the Citizens’ spend in 2025 to almost £350m, but could they be about to smash their club-transfer record, seeking a statement signing as they attempt to reclaim the Premier League title?

Manchester City aiming to bolster their midfield options

One of the most interesting aspects of Man City’s team in the early weeks of this season will be the reintegration of Rodri.

After rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament against Arsenal in September, Rodri was not seen again until 20 May, coming off the bench for a seven-minute cameo against Bournemouth.

The Ballon d’Or winner did feature in all four Club World Cup matches in June, albeit his only start came against Juventus, match practice that will help, but he’ll need to get up to speed quickly, ahead of Man City’s Premier League opener at Molineux.

As the season progresses, there are plenty of options to partner Rodri at the base of midfield, new signing Reijnders, Mateo Kovačić, Nico González, İlkay Gündoğan and Matheus Nunes, to name but a few, but could they make a move to sign one of the Premier League’s very best in that role?

Well, according to Julien Laurens of ESPN, Manchester City – alongside rivals Manchester United – are interested in signing Carlos Baleba, with Guardiola said to have ‘been a longtime admirer’ of the player.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Laurens adds that the Cameroonian international is valued at around £104m by Brighton, who are looking for an astronomically high fee, given that former club Lille are entitled to a 20% sell-on clause.

This comes days after David Ornstein of The Athletic reported that Man United had ‘made contact’ with the Seagulls over the possibility of signing the 21-year-old, so could Baleba end up in Manchester after all, only in a sky blue shirt rather than in red?

What Carlos Baleba would bring to Manchester City

Baleba joined Brighton & Hove Albion from Lille for a reported fee of £23m just two summers ago, and has certainly impressed all Premier League observers.

Ryan Adsett of Talk Seagulls describes him as an “agile powerhouse in midfield” who is a “serious talent”, while Matthew Avery of Breaking the Lines asserts that he will become ‘a world-class player’ given his ‘physical dominance’ and ‘elite line-breaking’ ability, concluding that his value in the transfer market will only continue ‘skyrocketing’.

Ahead of Brighton’s clash with Brentford in January, Thomas Frank stated that the “excellent midfielder will go to one of the bigger clubs in the future, for sure”, with Andy Naylor of the Athletic impressed by his ‘mobility’ and ‘defensive positioning’, noting that a ‘summer departure for Baleba cannot be discounted’.

Arguably, the youngster’s best performance of last season came against Manchester City in early-November, introduced as a half time substitute with the Seagulls 1-0 down, only to, as documented by James Gheerbrant of the Times, completely change the game as they roared back to win 2-1 late on, underlining that he is Brighton’s ‘most influential’ player.

Sam Blitz of Sky Sports believes that Baleba ‘could be inspired’ by Rodri, noting that the two nominally defensive midfielders are capable of impacting both ends of the pitch, so let’s analyse how the duo compare.

Firstly worth noting that, due to the fact he hardly featured in the most recent campaign, the 2023/24 season was chosen for Rodri statistics.

The table documents that the Spaniard is the pass master, ranked first for completed passes, attempted passes, passes into the final third and progressive passes; the fact his numbers are impressive shouldn’t be too surprising, as he did win the Ballon d’Or.

As for Baleba, his passing numbers are solid, if not quite as outstanding, but it is his defensive statistics that leap off the page, ranked in the top 25 last season for tackles, interceptions and blocks.

In the respective campaign analyses, both finished in the top five when it came to ball recoveries, suggesting they would form an impenetrable partnership.

Thus, as Rodri is eased back in, after a long spell on the sidelines, he’d surely love having Baleba alongside him, covering vast amounts of ground and doing a lot of the dirty work, so Man City should go all out and pay Brighton’s asking price, if they want to knock Liverpool of their perch.

Eze 2.0: Arsenal now chasing Spurs target who's "one of the best in the PL"

It’s difficult to remember when the mood in the Arsenal fanbase has been this positive.

While there are several reasons why, the most significant factor is undoubtedly Eberechi Eze’s arrival.

The England international has been one of the most entertaining players in the Premier League for years, and just before their North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur got their hands on him, the Gunners swooped in to bring him back to the Emirates.

Now with less than a week until the window closes, it looks like the club could be about to bring in another talented player in an Eze repeat.

Arsenal eye Eze repeat

While Arsenal have made a few signings from foreign leagues this summer, Andrea Berta and Co have made good use of the Premier League market as well.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

On top of Eze, the Italian oversaw deals to sign Noni Madueke and Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea and then, staying in West London, a deal to sign Christian Norgaard from Brentford.

In years gone by, that would be more than enough business for the Gunners, but now it looks like they could be going back to the Bees for another star in an Eze-esque deal.

At least that is according to a recent report from Graeme Bailey, who has claimed that Arsenal are interested in Nathan Collins.

The journalist has revealed that the Brentford captain has caught the eye of several top sides this summer, and alongside Spurs, the Gunners are one of them.

While the West Londoners do want to sell the 24-year-old, who they signed for just £23m a couple of seasons ago, there are still six days left until the window closes, and therefore every chance the Gunners could pull off an Eze repeat.

Why signing Collins would be an Eze repeat

While Eze and Collins obviously play in totally different positions on the pitch, there are plenty of reasons why Arsenal signing the latter would mirror their deal for the former.

The first reason, and then one their fans will likely enjoy the most, is that it could be yet another example of them hijacking a move for a player Spurs want to sign.

Baliey’s story makes it clear that one of the other sides currently most interested in the defender is the Lilywhites, and therefore, if the Gunners get in first, it’d give the fans yet more opportunity to gloat.

Another key similarity between the two is that both were, or are, in Collins’ case, key players for a fellow London-based Premier League side.

For example, although he doesn’t receive nearly as much media attention, the Irish titan is now Brentford’s captain and has made 80 appearances for the club.

Moreover, he’s not just earned the armband through his leadership skills, but also for the fact that he’s an immense centre-back.

In fact, journalist Mario Marra has gone as far as dubbing him “one of the best defenders in the Premier League,” and while that might sound somewhat hyperbolic, his underlying numbers suggest it might not be.

According to FBref, he ranked in the top 1% of centre-backs in the Premier League last season for shots blocked, the top 3% for overall blocks, the top 4% for assists, the top 9% for shot-creating actions, the top 11% for aerial duels won and more, all per 90.

In other words, while he doesn’t attract many headlines, the Bees star is an accomplished defender who excels at the basics and is more than adept at the technical aspects of the game.

'We crushed them' – Manuel Neuer says Bayern Munich 'were simply' cooler than Chelsea as goalkeeper labels Champions League win a 'crowning achievement'

Manuel Neuer claims Bayern Munich's 3-1 win against Chelsea in the Champions League opener was more than just a win, but rather a "crowning achievement" for the team. The Bayern goalkeeper believes they have improved as a squad and the result is a testament to it. The 39-year-old also completed his 100th Champions League victory with a win over the Premier League side.

Manuel Neuer's 'insane' performance against Chelsea

Neuer was solid in Bayern's Champions League win over Chelsea, making key saves and commanding his area with experience and calm. He helped maintain a strong defensive shape, limiting the London club's chances and playing a crucial role in Bayern's confident start to the campaign. The 39-year-old's performance showcased why he remains one of the top goalkeepers, contributing significantly to the team's victory, with coach Vincent Kompany labelling his performance "insane."

AdvertisementAFPThe key points behind Bayern's dominance

Neuer expressed his happiness after Bayern's win, praising the team's strong form and momentum. He acknowledged the challenge of facing the Club World Cup champions and emphasised the importance of building on this victory.

"When you're a Bayern Munich player, you always want to win. For us, the greatest thing is to play in the Champions League and win it," he said. "That's why it's always a distant goal. You have to try to do your homework. The game against Chelsea isn't homework, but rather a crowning achievement, the way we played today. We crushed them here at home. But in the new league format, we're first playing to get into the top eight. Then you want to progress in the knockout rounds toward the final."

Neuer added: "You're playing against a Premier League team, against a team that, in some ways, played similarly to Augsburg in the second half away from home. These are examples from the Bundesliga that you can then translate to the Champions League. We showed there that we also have to fight. That was an important factor today. Nevertheless, we were also the better team in terms of playing skills. We were simply cooler with the ball."

Manuel Neuer bags his 100th Champions League Victory

Neuer joined Bayern in 2011 after making his mark at Schalke, where he debuted in the Champions League in 2007. Known for standout moments like saving penalties against Real Madrid in 2011-12, he went on to anchor Bayern’s 2013 Champions League triumph. Now celebrating his 100th win in the competition, Neuer’s consistency and clean-sheet record cement his place among the greatest goalkeepers in Champions League history.

Asked about his 100th Champions League victory, the German goalkeeper said: "It's a nice number. But it's much more important to have won these victories with the team. We celebrate together."
