NWSL Power Rankings: Kansas City Current return to dominant ways, Orlando Pride hang on, and more chaotic upsets

Who's hot, who's not? INDIVISA ranks all 14 teams across the National Women's Soccer League

The Kansas City Current just look like they are having so much fun. Granted, they are in first place in the league standings with a 6-2-0 record, but they are also playing with the utmost joy. Whether it's Lo’eau LaBonta'd energy or Debinha's celebrations, the team is united and playing with pride.

Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the rest of the teams across the league. The Current are now the only team undefeated at home, with the standings shaken up week-by-week. The Orlando Pride now sit below the Current in second place with 16 points, and the Spirit just behind in third with 15 points.

In true NWSL fashion, there were some upsets over the weekend, most notably Gotham FC falling to Racing Louisville on the road.

So, who's leading the pack, and who's falling short of expectations? INDIVISA presents the latest 2025 NWSL Power Rankings.

Sri Lanka, Ireland fail to secure direct qualification for 2024 T20 World Cup

Both sides will have an opportunity to make the cut for 2024 T20 World Cup via the qualifier tournament later in the year

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Feb-2023Australia, South Africa, England, India, New Zealand and West Indies have earned automatic qualification to the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup by virtue of finishing in the top three of their respective groups at the 2023 edition of the competition. Bangladesh will also feature in next year’s edition, on virtue of being hosts, while Pakistan have qualified courtesy of being the seventh-ranked team as of February 27.That means Sri Lanka (ranked eighth) and Ireland (tenth) are the only teams from the 2023 T20 World Cup who have not secured direct qualification. They will take part in a qualifier tournament later in the year with the top two sides from that event becoming the ninth and tenth teams at the 2024 event in Bangladesh.Sri Lanka won two games at the tournament, including an upset victory over the hosts, South Africa, and finished fourth in Group 1 with four points – the same as South Africa and New Zealand but with a lower net run-rate. Ireland did not win any of their four matches and were last in Group 2. They earned their spots for the 2023 World Cup by beating Zimbabwe by four runs at a qualifying event in September last year. The 2024 T20 World Cup will be the last edition of the tournament to feature only 10 teams with the ICC confirming that the field will increase to 12 teams in the 2026, 2028 and 2030 editions. A new ICC Women’s T20 Champions Trophy will launch in 2027 and will feature six teams. The inaugural hosts are pencilled in as Sri Lanka, but only if they are able to qualify for the event.

Pretty cool to do it when those runs were really needed, says Mitchell after his fifth Test ton

“I never knew if I would actually be able to get one Test hundred, let alone be where we are now”

New Zealand fight, and find ways to win. This was part of Daryl Mitchell’s appraisal of New Zealand on day three at Hagley Oval, when they came roaring into the Test. Mitchell was the top-scorer, hitting 102 off 193 balls, as New Zealand recovered from 188 for 6 to post 373.This was Mitchell’s fifth Test hundred, in 25 innings, and his second in his hometown of Christchurch. Since making his international debut in 2019, Mitchell – now 31 – has become an integral part of the national side, across formats.”To do it at home here in front of my family is pretty cool, and to do it in the circumstances where those runs were needed,” he said after the day’s play. “I never knew if I would actually be able to get one Test hundred, let alone be where we are now. Every one is special.”I guess I’m a late bloomer in international cricket. To represent my country across all the formats is something I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid.”Sri Lanka assistant coach Naveed Nawaz:

On the key passage of day three:
“The New Zealanders played very well in the second session today and swung the game their way. It was that 25 overs when Daryl Mitchell and Matt Henry’s partnership took the game away from us. And after that, Neil Wagner as well. It looked like a 50-run lead for us at one stage.”

On Sri Lanka’s prospects:
“We have to back ourselves that a couple of batsmen will go in there and get some big runs, to swing back to our side. The wicket is still good to bat on. It gives a little to the fast bowlers still. Anything above 275-300 would be a good score.”

Although New Zealand at times looked in danger of conceding a lead of perhaps 100, Mitchell lauded the fight, which he said is just part of the way his team plays. Through the course of his innings, Mitchell put on significant stands with Tom Latham, Michael Bracewell, Tim Southee, and Matt Henry. But before all that, he had had to battle through some incredibly probing bowling in the third session of day two.”It’s a typical Hagley wicket in that it has got pace and bounce there,” Mitchell said. “I thought the Sri Lankans bowled extremely well last night. They built a lot of pressure and were relentless. You needed a little bit of luck to get through that patch as well. That was nice. And then to put on partnerships with the boys and get us to a total that put us ahead of the game was awesome.”Henry was the other standout batter on day three. Coming in at No. 9, he struck a bruising 72 off 75, which featured ten fours and three sixes. His 69-run partnership with No. 10 Neil Wagner was in fact the best of New Zealand’s innings, and saw the hosts move past Sri Lanka’s first-innings total. They eventually established an 18-run lead.”I thought Matt Henry’s knock was special. He has obviously got great hand-eye coordination, and some of the sixes he hit were massive. Every run is really important in a Test like this. For him to go out and get 70-odd at his home ground is pretty cool.”We know as Kiwis we’ll keep fighting and keep trying to find ways to win. We back each other to do a job, and it was awesome to see Henry go out and play his natural game, and more importantly build partnerships and get us to a total that we thought was perfect for that first innings.”

Rabada six-for leads South Africa to victory over West Indies

West Indies threatened to turn the tables on South Africa by rolling them over for 116 on the third morning at SuperSport Park, but their own batters collapsed in similar spectacular fashion, chasing 247. Kagiso Rabada was chiefly responsible for that collapse, bagging 6 for 50 to dismiss them for 159 and seal South Africa’s victory inside three days on a track that offered variable bounce.Jermaine Blackwood’s thrilling counterattack – 79 off 93 balls – raised West Indies’ hopes, but Rabada found a little extra kick off the pitch to take him out and ensure the new era under captain Temba Bavuma and coach Shukri Conrad began with a victory in Centurion, where the South Africa women’s team that reached the T20 World Cup final five days ago was also in attendance. It was Roach who had set the scene for the day with his 11th five-for in Test cricket – and first away from home since 2017. He also surpassed Joel Garner’s tally of 259 to become West Indies’ fifth-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket. Just before lunch, Roach was warmly welcomed back by his team-mates, Jimmy Adams, West Indies’ director of cricket, and Brian Lara, the team mentor. However, the mood and tempo of the match changed quickly when Rabada struck either side of the lunch break. After having captain Kraigg Brathwaite caught down the leg side for a duck, he drew an outside edge from No. 3 Raymon Reifer.Tagenarine Chanderpaul kept playing and missing at full balls, but wasn’t particularly flustered against that length. It was the short ball that bothered him. He fell on his backside twice while trying to deal with them and then when he dared to hook a head-high bouncer from Marco Jansen, he could only top-edge it to midwicket for 10.Jermaine Blackwood played some outstanding shots•AFP/Getty Images

Roston Chase misjudged an inswinger from Jansen and was castled after offering no shot. Then, when debutant Gerald Coetzee produced extra bounce to get rid of Kyle Mayers, West Indies were 33 for 5 in the 15th over.Blackwood came in and hoicked the seventh ball he faced, off Rabada, over square leg for four. He continued to regularly pump the ball over the top, running away to a 51-ball half-century. At the other end, Joshua Da Silva was more circumspect and contributed 17 to a 58-run sixth-wicket partnership before he fell to Rabada.Blackwood, though, went after South Africa’s premier seamer and shanked him over his head for an imposing four. When Anrich Nortje shifted his angle to around the wicket, he ramped him over deep third for four. Jason Holder also operated at almost a run-a-ball in a 37-run seventh-wicket stand with Blackwood before Rabada had him nicking behind with a perfectly-pitched delivery. Though Rabada looked like wasn’t at his best earlier in the day, floating some balls in the lower 130-kph range, his seven-over spell post tea, in which he dismissed both Holder and Blackwood, was perhaps the most decisive passage of play. The day had started on a more promising note for West Indies. Roach struck with his first ball to cut Aiden Markram’s innings short at 47 off 58. He went wide of the crease, tricked Markram into playing for the inward angle from over the wicket but got it to straighten late off the seam and graze the outside edge. Marais Erasmus, the on-field umpire, didn’t rule Markram out initially, but he opted to walk back to the dressing room. In his next over, Roach went wide of the crease again, but this time he beat Jansen’s outside edge and hit the top of the off stump.Roach also helped snip the South African tail, but Coetzee’s spunky cameo (20 off 15 balls) pushed their lead closer to 250. Markram aside, Coetzee was the only South Africa batter to score more than 10 runs in their second innings. He then combined and Rabada, Jansen and Norje with the ball to compensate for their batting collapse and wrap the game up before drinks on the third afternoon.

Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Moeen Ali return for must-win Headingley Test

Anderson, Pope, Tongue make way, as Brook moves to No.3 and Bairstow to No.5

Andrew Miller05-Jul-20231:43

Have we seen the last of James Anderson in Ashes cricket?

England have made three changes for Thursday’s third Ashes Test at Headingley, with Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, and Moeen Ali returning to the starting XI in place of James Anderson, Josh Tongue and the injured Ollie Pope. The XI was confirmed shortly before England’s captain Ben Stokes addressed the media at Headingley, where his team must win to begin to claw back their 2-0 deficit after defeats at Edgbaston and Lord’s.Of the three changes, Anderson’s was the most anticipated. He has so far claimed three wickets at 75.33 in an off-colour start to his tenth Ashes campaign, and after declaring the Edgbaston pitch to be “kryptonite”, England’s short-ball approach at Lord’s also went away from his preferred swing-bowling methods. He makes way for Woakes, who has not played a home Test since September 2021, but whose record of 94 wickets at 22.63 in England makes him the obvious like-for-like replacement. In the absence of Pope – whose dislocated right shoulder has ruled him out of the summer – Woakes’ prowess with the bat (he averages 35.25 at home, with one hundred and five fifties) is a bonus after England fielded an unusually lengthy tail at Lord’s.Related

Hazlewood's 'uncharted territory' puts Australia on alert

'When Smithy is batting you just let him be'

“We’re obviously devastated for Popey,” Stokes said. “He’s been a huge part of what we’ve managed to achieve over the last 18 months and obviously, being vice captain, it’s a real shame not only for us, but also for him in such a big series.”Moeen’s return provides more ballast in the lower-middle order, and is further reason why England have opted not to replace Pope with an additional batter, with Essex’s Dan Lawrence the one spare option in their squad. Harry Brook has been handed Pope’s role at No.3, in a show of faith in spite of his quiet series to date, but Stokes admitted that his own workload as an allrounder – after a gruelling 12-over spell in the second innings at Lord’s – had been a key reason for packing the side with extra bowling options.”Obviously Dan was in the squad as the next batter in, but there were a few more things to consider,” Stokes said. “I’m not gonna lie, last week took it out of me a little bit, so a big part of it was what would be the best team if I wasn’t to bowl a ball in this game, in the worst case scenario? That doesn’t mean I’m not going to bowl, but that was a huge part of the thinking about the team that we picked.”Brook has so far made 132 runs at 33 in four innings of the series, but attracted criticism for a soft dismissal at Lord’s after reaching his half-century. Stokes, however, said that his promotion to 3 – and Bairstow’s to No.5, the position he filled in his remarkable run of form in 2022 – had been “pretty simple” decisions.”Last summer, Brookie was in the squad and was the next player in, and when you’ve got a player like Brookie, from one to six, he would have come in in any position,” Stokes said. “We feel that Brookie is a type of player who will just take the responsibility and just crack on with it.”We obviously want to keep Joe [Root] at four because he’s a remarkable player, and Jonny moving up to five was just to get him into the game earlier. The things he did last summer from the No.5 position are quite hard to look past.”ESPNcricinfo LtdMoeen missed the Lord’s Test after sustaining a cut to the knuckle of his spinning finger, but he has been deemed fit to resume his comeback to the format. His appearance in the first Test at Edgbaston was his first since retiring at the end of the India series in 2021, and he resumes needing two more wickets to reach 200 in Tests.Wood’s extra pace offers England a genuine point of difference after being noticeably out-matched on the speed gun in the first two Tests. After missing the Lord’s Test to ensure his readiness for action, he returns for his first Test since the tour of Pakistan in December, and his first competitive outing in all cricket since his fiery displays for Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL in April. He steps in for Josh Tongue, who produced a spirited display in his first taste of Ashes cricket at Lord’s, where he finished with five wickets in the match, including Steve Smith and David Warner in both innings.Stokes, however, was adamant that Wood’s inclusion ahead of Anderson did not spell the end of the road for England’s greatest fast bowler, a point that he had made to the whole bowling group before the start of the series.”We were very open and honest, and clear with each other before the series started, that it’s going to be very tough ask to ask all the bowlers to play every game this summer,” Stokes said. “It’s a good chance for Jimmy to have a rest up and then get ready to charge in from the Jimmy Anderson End at Old Trafford next week. But it’s great to have Woody fit. He’s firing and really ready to go this week, and we’re looking forward to seeing him get going.”England: 1 Zak Crawley, 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Harry Brook, 4 Joe Root, 5 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 6 Ben Stokes (capt), 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Ollie Robinson, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 Mark Wood

Xabi Alonso slammed as 'very disappointed' Bayer Leverkusen player reveals he would have asked for transfer had Real Madrid boss not left

Jonas Hofmann has revealed his frustration with Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen, admitting he would have left had the coach not left for Real Madrid.

Hofmann frustrated by lack of dialogueTen Hag arrival seen as fresh chanceLeverkusen ace nearly pushed for moveFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

The 33-year-old midfielder has publicly criticised the former Leverkusen manager for lacking direct communication after he was relegated to a fringe role in the second half of the 2024-25 season. He told that he expected “open and honest” dialogue and was disappointed by the Spaniard’s approach.

While Alonso’s tenure at Leverkusen was widely hailed for its historic Bundesliga title win, Hofmann’s comments reveal underlying tensions behind the scenes. The midfielder made 46 appearances in 2023-24, but barely featured the following season, starting just four league games. His frustration suggests that not all players thrived under Alonso’s leadership, despite the team’s success. With new coach Erik ten Hag in place, the player is ready to fight for his place in the starting XI.

WHAT HOFMANN SAID

Hofmann targeted the former Leverkusen coach’s leadership style, specifically his lack of clear communication with players during difficult periods. "I expect a coach to address something directly when he notices something. I expect open and direct communication. A coach shouldn't wait longer than two weeks for this, because as a coach, I want the players to be in top shape to raise the training level. There's always a need for competition, that's clear. I would have expected a bit more from the coach."

He added: "New coach, new opportunity. I'm a Bundesliga kid. I'm fighting my way back. I feel comfortable, but under Xabi Alonso, I probably would have considered a move. Personally, I'm putting last season in a box and don't want to take it out again. It was very disappointing for me, what happened there and how it played out. That's not what I'm aiming for."
