Marcus Rashford and Barcelona – can cash-strapped Catalans really afford Man Utd outcast and where would he fit in?

The striker has long desired a move to Camp Nou and the Blaugrana's transfer travails actually make it more likely than it first seemed

"Marcus Rashford is on smoke," was how Rio Ferdinand reacted the last time the forward played at Camp Nou. "He is on a new level, a level he hasn't been at until now. A fit, focused, direct, confident, deadly and potent Rashford is not to be messed with."

The often gloomy Paul Scholes could not help but get carried away either after Manchester United's 2-2 draw at Barcelona in the first leg of a Europa League knockout play-off in February 2023. "He is virtually unplayable at the moment," was the midfield great's assessment. "No-one can handle him. Wherever he is playing, left, right or down the middle, he just seems unplayable."

Rashford had inspired United from a goal down to take the lead in what was a thrilling match, scoring an equaliser from a very tight angle then provoking an own goal from Jules Kounde with a mazy run across the pitch before Raphinha levelled. It was one of Rashford's finest performances in a United shirt and on one of the biggest stages but nor was it a surprise. This was Rashford at the very peak of his powers, in the midst of a sensational run of 18 goals in 19 matches, in a season in which he would go on to score 30 goals in all competitions and notched 12 assists.

Sadly for United fans, things have never quite been the same for their homegrown superstar, who has gone from being a fan favourite to persona non-grata. Less than two years after his tour-de-force at Camp Nou. Rashford was forced out of United and now he is only allowed to visit the club's training ground in the evening, driving through the back door when the rest of the squad and head coach Ruben Amorim, who cast him aside from the squad in December, have left.

It seems strange, then, that despite a staggering fall from grace, Rashford sees Barcelona as his next destination. But what exactly would it take for the 27-year-old to make his dream move a reality?

  • Getty Images Sport

    Back on the agenda

Rashford and his people have been pushing for a move to Barcelona as soon as the season finished, when his brother Dwaine Maynard flew out to Catalonia to meet the club’s sporting director Deco.

Rashford did his bit too, arranging an interview with Barcelona-supporting Youtubers xBuyers in which he declared his love for Lamine Yamal and his desire to play with him.

The speculation, however, seemed to be very much led by Rashford rather than Barca and it felt like a fantasy rather than reality.

Barca looked to be on the verge of signing Nico Williams for €58 million (£50m/$67m), a deal which would have eaten into the club’s already fragile budget, as well as providing Rashford with another speedy forward to compete against in his bid to get into Hansi Flick’s starting XI.

However, Williams’ decision to shun Barca and sign a 10-year contract with Athletic Club has put Rashford back on the Catalan club’s agenda. Ever so slightly.

    Diaz is another fantasy

Never one to have their confidence knocked by rejection, Barca have turned their attention to another target, Liverpool’s Luis Diaz. And they seemed to have learned nothing from their doomed approach for Williams, which aggravated LaLiga as well as Athletic. That’s because Barca have breached the organisation’s financial fair play rules and are currently unable to register new signing Joan Garcia and any future signings until they raise more revenue.

Diaz, however, is even more expensive than Williams. And Barca are not the only ones interested in him. Bayern Munich have just tabled a second bid for the Colombian worth €67.5m (£58m/$78m), which Liverpool have rejected. And Diaz, like anyone with any knowledge of football, knows Barca will not find it easy to afford him and register him due to their crippling financial crisis. It is why he is reportedly seeking potential compensation from Barca in the event he could not be registered.

Barca’s refusal to insert a compensatory clause into Williams' deal is believed to be the ultimate reason why he chose to remain with Athletic, who were also able to offer him a higher salary due to the Basque Country’s favourable tax regime.

Barca’s struggles to sign Williams and Diaz offer a lot of hope to Rashford, making a deal more likely than it was a couple of weeks ago, even if it is still far from simple.

    Loan doesn't suit United

Although Barca wanted both Williams and Diaz on long-term deals, all the noises coming out of Camp Nou suggest they are only willing to entertain a loan move for Rashford.

"I know the interest of Barca in Rashford is real, even though they have said he's not the priority," Barcelona-based journalist Toni Juanmarti of the podcast tells GOAL.

"For Barca, he has the player profile that Hansi Flick likes because he can play as a No. 9 or as a winger. He is direct and he is quick on the counterattack.

"It's true that Barca don't want to buy him permanently and they don't want an obligatory purchase clause. If they are going to invest in a player, they would rather sign someone younger or someone who has proven themselves more."

Barca's stance is at odds with United’s preference, which is of a permanent sale in the region of £40m ($54m). There are several reasons for this.

Firstly, United want to end the distraction caused by Rashford’s rift with Ruben Amorim. Their desperation for him to leave can be seen in the fact that they have given Matheus Cunha the No. 10 shirt previously belonging to Rashford.

Secondly, the Red Devils need a sizable transfer fee as they have financial troubles of their own and cannot further bolster Amorim’s squad without sales.

    Running out of time

But more than six weeks since the transfer window opened, there have been no bids to buy Rashford, which is hardly surprising as Rashford’s estimated salary of £325,000 ($435,000) per week is out of the reach of most clubs bar Europe’s elite teams and the big sides from the Saudi Pro League. Furthermore, Rashford has not played like an elite player since the heady heights of February 2023.

As a result, United might end up having little choice but to accept a loan move, as it would at least clear an estimated £17m ($23m) off their wage bill. But even without having to pay a transfer fee, Barca would not automatically be able to register Rashford due to their standoff with La Liga.

Clearly, though, it would be easier for them to plug the financial deficit than if they had to pay a big transfer fee on top of his wages.

Rashford’s current salary at United would make him Barca’s second-highest earner but there have been reports that he would lower his wage demands to get the move he craves. So, while Barca’s financial troubles would appear to be an obstacle to Rashford making the move, they actually make it more likely.

USMNT midfielder Johnny Cardoso completes Atletico Madrid transfer for reported $35 million fee

The midfielder has made a huge move to join Diego Simeone's side

Johnny Cardoso has completed has transfer to Atletico Madrid, the club announced on Wednesday. The 23-year-old U.S. men's national team midfielder has made the big move from fellow La Liga side Real Betis after the clubs agreed to a deal for a reported $35 million. Cardoso has signed a five-year contract with the Spanish giants, keeping him in Madrid through 2030.

Cardoso really broke through with Real Betis last season, although he did show signs of his promise in his first half-season upon arriving in Spain in January 2024. He was a key figure in the club's run to the Conference League final while also putting in big performances against the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona. In total, he made 65 appearances for Betis.

Now, though, he'll make a significant leap up the ladder to Atletico Madrid, traditionally one of Spanish soccer's powers. Cardoso will reportedly replace Rodrigo De Paul, who is linked with a big move to join international teammate Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The move is a massive one for Cardoso, who has certainly earned it with his play on the club level. His performances on that side have never been questioned, but he still does have plenty to prove with the USMNT less than a year out from the World Cup.

Despite his star play in La Liga, Cardoso's game has yet to truly translate to the USMNT, where he's not yet won a spot with a signature performance. He's largely been error-prone, headlined by a poor giveaway against Turkey ahead of the Gold Cup, and injuries prevented him from really making a mark on the ensuing tournament.

Playing under Diego Simeone, who hails from Argentina like USMNT boss Mauricio Pochettino, should prove helpful for the midfielder, who will now be learning from two of the game's best managers, both of whom also played at a very high level.

Cardoso was born in New Jersey to Brazilian parents and moved back to Brazil when he was three months old. He broke through originally with Brazil's Internacional before making his big move to Betis. On the international level, he earned his first senior call-up for the U.S. in November 2020 and has gone on to earn 22 senior caps.

Jongwe pastes wallpaper icon Mathews to down SL at the death

“Angelo was one of my role models growing up,” says Zimbabwe match-winner

Andrew Fidel Fernando16-Jan-2024Zimbabwe allrounder Luke Jongwe had Angelo Mathews wallpaper when he was younger (whether this was a physical poster or the background screen on a device wasn’t clear). Mathews was also Jongwe’s social media profile picture for a while. So what did Jongwe do to thank Mathews for the years of inspiration? He smashed him for six, four, six in the deciding over of a T20I in Mathews’ comeback series, of course. Those consecutive boundaries transformed Zimbabwe’s chances of victory from exceedingly slim when there were 20 needed off the last over, to almost a sure thing, with the requirement down to three off four (Jongwe’s hero had also bowled him a no-ball).Jongwe was also dropped off the bowling of Mathews before the match ended, with Zimbabwe sealing victory off the penultimate ball. This was the third tight finish of the tour, but Zimbabwe’s first win.”Over the past few months I’ve been in situations where I could have won games for my country, and even for my franchise back home, and I couldn’t do it,” Jongwe said after the game. “I got close, but couldn’t cross the line. Doing it against Sri Lanka, considering Angelo was one of my role models growing up, is even better. That’s special.”He used to be my wallpaper when I was a kid. He was still using Gray-Nicolls gear at that time. I was still a youngster. On Facebook at one point he was my profile picture. There’s too much happening for me today. There are a lot of emotions. I’m just grateful to God.”Jongwe had bided his time at the crease, awaiting that over from an allrounder that he knew Sri Lanka needed to deliver. He had come to the crease in the 17th over, and struck one four in his first seven balls. But with the frontline bowlers having only two overs left, he knew there would be easier runs on offer later.”I knew they needed one over from someone, because Chameera was done and Madushanka was done. I told myself I wasn’t going to take a risk against them, and wait until the last over, and give myself the best chance.”I think 20 runs was a lot to be honest. The wicket got better to bat on – Sri Lanka had been 25 for 4, and we were looking to restrict them to 140. But when we bowled in the death – I bowled in the death as well – we talked afterwards and thought that something had changed in the wicket. The ball was starting to come on to the bat nicely. We knew we just need to keep wickets intact and build partnerships to try and get our team over the line.”

Nathan Smith joins Worcestershire as overseas player

Nathan Smith, the 25-year-old New Zealand allrounder, has joined Worcestershire as an overseas player for the entirety of the 2024 season.Smith has yet to make his international debut, but has featured domestically for Otago Volts and Wellington Firebirds, claiming 105 first-class wickets at 27.65 and 1620 runs at 26.55, with on first-class century. His T20 attributes include 52 wickets at 21.59, and a career strike-rate of 122.”I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining Worcestershire for the 2024 season,” Smith said. “The club’s rich history and commitment to developing talent make it an ideal environment for me to grow as a cricketer.”I’ve heard a lot of good things about the club from other Kiwis who have played at New Road recently, and I can’t wait to join up with the rest of the squad and hit the ground running.”Worcestershire’s head coach, Alan Richardson, added: “Nathan is a great character, and is a fantastic addition to our squad.”We have been monitoring him for some time, and his pace and ability to swing the ball will provide us with a significant boost in our bowling department.”He’s a genuine wicket-taker, can also contribute valuable runs down the order, and is an outstanding fielder, making him a real all-round threat.”We believe he’ll be a key player in our pursuit of success this season.”

Australia will not have a concussion replacement if a batter were to suffer a head knock on day three of the Adelaide Test

Australia’s reserve batter Matt Renshaw will be released to play in the BBL qualifier for Brisbane Heat against Sydney Sixers on Friday night on the Gold Coast, which leaves Australia’s Test team without a concussion replacement for 24 hours if a batter were to suffer a head knock against West Indies on day three of the Adelaide Test.Renshaw was selected as the only spare batter in Australia’s 13-man squad for the first Test but was always going to carry the drinks with Steven Smith opening the batting in place of the retired David Warner, and Cameron Green coming into the side to bat at No. 4.Cricket Australia confirmed that Renshaw would fly from Adelaide to Gold Coast on Thursday night and return on Saturday morning. It is one of the rare times Australia will not have a batting concussion substitute available at the ground in recent years, but they are confident they can fly Renshaw back at short notice from Gold Coast in the unlikely event of a mishap.Previously, Australia have twice needed a concussion substitute in Tests but never at home. Marnus Labsuchagne was famously the first to fill the role in Test cricket at Lord’s in 2019. Labuschagne was also a concussion sub in ODI cricket last year when Cameron Green was hit in South Africa. Renshaw was Australia’s only other Test concussion sub when he came in for Warner during the second Test against India in Delhi last year.

Mohammad Rizwan and Irfan Khan Niazi have been ruled out of the remainder of Pakistan’s T20I series against New Zealand. The PCB, in a statement, said they had received radiology reports for the pair and decided to pull them out of the series.Rizwan is thought to have pulled a hamstring while batting in the third T20I. He received extensive on-field attention before going off retired hurt. The PCB has downplayed the extent of his injury, saying he is expected to be out for no more than a week to ten days, and that the injury does not imperil any future tours as things stand. While there was no sign of discomfort for Niazi during that game, he is also believed to have picked up a hamstring niggle, resulting in the PCB pulling him out of the series. The pair’s absences follow Azam Khan’s unavailability for the tour with injury, though an official statement said he only needed 10 days of rest, suggesting there is no long-term availability issue. While Haseebullah, who made his sole international appearance in a T20 against New Zealand earlier this year, was called up as cover for Azam, no further replacements have been announced.Pakistan do have wicketkeeping options in Rizwan’s absence. While Haseebullah has not featured yet, he is a wicketkeeper-batter. Usman Khan also kept wicket for two games for the Multan Sultans earlier this year in the PSL.The injuries come at an inopportune time for Pakistan with the series on the line in Lahore. New Zealand bounced back from a crushing defeat in the second T20I with a dominant performance to level the series in Pindi, with the final two games in Lahore.

Transfer boost for Chelsea as Xavi Simons is left OUT of RB Leipzig squad for friendly clash – with Benjamin Sesko also absent just hours after Newcastle's £70m bid

Chelsea and Newcastle have been given a boost in their respective pursuits of Xavi Simons and Benjamin Sesko with both players left out by RB Leipzig.

  • Newcastle make big bid for Slovenian striker

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The German side are set to face Italian side Atalanta on Saturday afternoon and will be without their two young stars. Simons is edging closer to a move to west London with Chelsea after the Blues entered advanced negotiations and looked willing to match the expected asking price of around £60m ($81m). Meanwhile, Sesko's future has been a topic of discussion throughout the summer and on Saturday morning, Newcastle made their first bid of £70 million (€80m) for the Slovenian forward.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

It is beginning to feel as if it is only a matter of time before both Simons and Sesko make permanent switches to the Premier League. The new question will now be how they fit into their respective sides. Chelsea already possesses numerous wingers and wide midfielders, and Cole Palmer occupies the number ten role that would most suit Simons – Enzo Maresca will be having selection headaches every weekend. As for Sesko, his move to Newcastle could spark a transfer domino that sees Alexander Isak move to Liverpool. The Reds' opening bid for the Swedish striker was rejected on Friday.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

After a poor season last year, Leipzig will be frustrated to be losing their key attacking players. Simons has contributed to 36 goals (18 goals, 18 assists) in the past two Bundesliga seasons to complement Sesko's 34 goal contributions (27 goals, 7 assists). They will hope the new signing and Simons' former PSV team-mate, Johan Bakayoko, will be able to replicate similar numbers.

    WHAT NEXT FOR LEIPZIG?

Leipzig have two games of pre-season left – one against Atalanta and then against RC Lens – before the new season starts. They will hope that after Simons and Sesko they do not lose any more of their star players as they look to finish higher than the 7th place they achieved last campaign.
