United legend recalls feeling distraught when Tevez leftHe named Argentine as his favourite strike partnerThe pair got on well despite having no common languageFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

United's all-time top scorer has revealed his sadness upon learning that Carlos Tevez was leaving the club to join Manchester City. Rooney and Tevez had struck up a prolific partnership at United between 2007 and 2009, when Cristiano Ronaldo was also at the club. But Ronaldo left for Real Madrid in the summer of 2009 and Tevez also followed him out the door but in far more controversial circumstances as he went straight to crosstown rivals Manchester City.

AdvertisementWHAT ROONEY SAID

"I was gutted to be honest, I’m pretty sure Carlos wanted to stay at Manchester United,' . "Man City at the time were trying to build and become competitive and I knew that he’d be a massive part of that because obviously the ability he has. I think we’ve seen when he went there, he had some great times there as well. I was devastated, I would’ve really like him to stay longer and continue to play with him."

AFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Rooney recalled the cynicism around him being able to play alongside Tevez but he emphasised the great understanding they had on the pitch together. "When Carlos joined Manchester United, there was a lot of talk about whether Carlos and I could play up front together. I was really excited when we signed him," he said. "We were similar in ways how we played – both worked hard and could both play as a nine, both play off the forward as well. We had a really good understanding and chemistry on the pitch, off the pitch."

Rooney and Tevez also got on off the pitch despite the Argentine speaking no English. "I used to pick him up to take him to the airport before Champions League games. It was interesting actually because we couldn't really have a conversation. I think his English was better than he let on," Rooney said.

Sanderson dents Essex's lingering hopes of clinching title

Veteran Northamptonshire bowler Ben Sanderson dented Essex’s lingering hopes of clinching the LV= Insurance County Championship title with a masterclass of seam bowling at Wantage Road.Essex started their first innings needing at least 400 if rivals Surrey were bowled out for less than 250 in their game at Southampton, but Sanderson made short work of their top order, removing Alastair Cook, Nick Browne and Dan Lawrence in a nine over spell, while conceding just 14 runs. They rallied to 125 for 4 by the close of play, still trailing by 244 runs to just about keep their challenge alive following Surrey’s collapse at the Ageas Bowl. Surrey though require only a draw to clinch another Championship. Essex, meantime, are pinning their hopes on Hampshire beating Surrey, and then finding a way to somehow earn four batting points tomorrow and beat Northamptonshire.Sanderson (3 for 15) made the most of overcast conditions under lights, bowling a metronomic line and length and extracting prodigious seam movement which drew Essex’s batters into repeatedly playing and missing outside off-stump. Along the way he reached 350 first-class wickets in Northamptonshire colours when he dismissed Cook.Earlier, centurion Rob Keogh moved from his overnight 154 past his previous highest score of 161 at Wantage Road, before he was adjudged lbw to Umesh Yadav for 172 off just 167 balls with 25 fours, four sixes).Justin Broad, who played the supporting role throughout a 98-run partnership with Keogh in 20 overs, went on to post his maiden first-class half-century when he smashed Jamie Porter down the ground for four. He largely eschewed risk, hitting along the ground and sweeping the spinners adeptly, finishing unbeaten on 56.Wickets continued to fall at the other end. Tom Taylor, playing his final match for Northamptonshire before moving to newly-promoted Worcestershire, came out with real intent. He smashed Matt Critchley down the ground for six, but when he attempted to repeat the shot, he could only pick out Porter at mid-on.The new ball did the trick for Porter who got one to seam back and knock Sanderson’s middle stump out of the ground before enticing the edge from Jack White, Alastair Cook taking a tumbling catch at slip.In reply, Browne started briskly but drove loosely to a fuller ball from Sanderson and was caught behind by keeper Lewis McManus. Cook played a beautiful extra cover drive off Sanderson but was undone when the Northamptonshire stalwart got one to nip back and send his off-stump cartwheeling.Dan Lawrence, playing his final match for Essex before he joins Surrey, fell soon after lunch when he played away from his body to another ball from Sanderson which seamed away, McManus again taking the catch.Critchley (17) saw off Sanderson, eventually getting hold of one from Taylor, guiding it safely down to third to bring up Essex’s 50 in the 16th over and driving White through midwicket for another boundary. But when Northamptonshire skipper Luke Procter pitched one up, Critchley played across the line trying to work the ball to leg, only to have his off-stump knocked back.White was finding plenty of movement off the seam too and drew Paul Walter into edging behind with just 1 to his name, only for Karun Nair to drop the ball at first slip. Walter started to find the boundary, driving fluently through extra cover.Tom Westley, who had put on 33 with Critchley, played sweetly off his legs early on, but became becalmed, scoring just 1 out of an unbeaten partnership of 27 with Walter before bad light and rain stopped play with Essex on 95 for 4, still trailing by 274 runs. After the resumption, Walter started to stroke the ball sweetly down the ground, but Essex’s scoring remained doggedly below three an over, putting them a long way behind the rate required to secure the three batting bonus points they need.

'Play like it's Test cricket for some time' – What Kohli told Rahul when India fell to 2 for 3

Rohit says changing conditions will be a big challenge for India as they travel to nine different venues for their nine league games

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Oct-20231:58

Kumble: KL Rahul looks like he’s back to his original self

Twelve balls into India’s pursuit of 200, KL Rahul found himself at the crease. He was batting at , and he had just kept wicket through a muggy Chennai afternoon for almost 50 overs. It was all a “bit of a rush”, as he said three hours later, after having batted through the rest of the chase to get India over the line against Australia with six wickets to spare.Asked at the post-match presentation – while he picked up the Player of the Match award – what the conversation was with his batting partner Virat Kohli was when he came out to bat in that precarious position, he offered a smile and said: “Quite honestly, not a lot of conversation. I was just trying to catch my breath as I just had a shower. I thought I would get a good half an hour – [or] an hour’s – break, put the feet up and just rest up. But I was out there in no time, so there was a bit of rush. I was just trying to get my breath back.”On a more serious note, Kohli, he said, reckoned the pair would have to do some Test-match batting for a while to get India back on track on a trying Chepauk pitch, where India’s spinners had dictated terms before Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer – that is, three of India’s top four – bagged ducks to Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc.”Virat said there’s big help in the wicket, and [we] just have to play proper shots and play like it’s Test cricket for some time and see where it goes,” Rahul said. “That was mostly the plan, and happy that we could do the job for the team.”Related

Smith: 'We can learn a bit from this game'

Rahul, Kohli guide India home after early scare on tricky track

How tough exactly was it to bat on this pitch, then? Tricky, till the dew came in, Rahul said. “There was a bit of help for the fast bowlers with the new ball when we bowled. And later on the spinners came in and they had a lot help from the wicket.”But I think towards the end – in the last 15-20 overs – the dew played a bit of a part for them; while they were bowling, they changed the ball as well. Once that happened, it did come on a little better.”But it was still two-paced, and wasn’t a great wicket to bat on; nor was it too difficult. It wasn’t a flat wicket, nor was it too helpful for the bowlers. I think it was a good cricket wicket, and that’s what you get in the south of India. But a bit excited that we could get the win today.”Virat Kohli and KL Rahul put on 165 runs together•Associated Press

India captain Rohit Sharma, speaking at the post-match presentation, admitted to being nervous himself while India had their unprecedented meltdown to 2 for 3 – it was the first time in men’s ODI cricket that three of their top four were out for ducks, and no team had previously gone on to win an ODI after losing three wickets with as few runs on the board.”You don’t want to start your innings like that when you are chasing that kind of a target,” Rohit said. “But you’ve got to give credit to the Aussies – they bowled pretty well. Some loose shots there as well [from India], but that happens. When you have that kind of a target, you want to get off the mark as quickly as possible; try and score as many as possible in the powerplay.”But hats off to Virat and KL – how they stuck in the middle out there and created that match-winning partnership.”This will be the first and last time India play at Chepauk at the World Cup though, and next up they move to Delhi, where South Africa and Sri Lanka combined to break the record for the most runs aggregated in a World Cup game just last night. The difference in conditions will be stark, and that will be one of India’s big challenges as they travel to 10 different venues for their group games (they will be the only team to not play twice at one venue in the round-robin stage), Rohit said. “That is going to be our biggest challenge as a team moving forward, because we are going to play on different pitches and in different conditions as well. So you might have to change your combination a little bit as well depending on what sort of conditions we play in. But as a team we are prepared to do that. It is something we have been talking about in our group – whoever suits the conditions needs to come and do the job for us.”

Afghanistan's moments of brilliance underpinned by shoddy basics

“You need to be on all the time. Being more consistent in our basics is what’s going to look after us going forward in this tournament,” says coach Jonathan Trott

Matt Roller07-Oct-2023Mujeeb Ur Rahman grinned sheepishly. Nobody at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala was quite sure what he was waiting for. But as Mujeeb undid the drawstring on his trousers, it became clear. It was about the item in substitute fielder Abdul Rahman’s hand as he ran out and gave it away for good – Mujeeb had forgotten to wear his box.It was a light moment, one which drew smiles from players on both sides and laughter in the commentary box. Yet it also served as an encapsulation of Afghanistan’s six-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in their opening match of the 2023 World Cup: for all their talent, this was a side short on attention to detail. There were passages of this game where Afghanistan competed well. At the first drinks break, they had seen off the opening spells of Bangladesh’s seamers, and while Ibrahim Zadran had top-edged a sweep to deep backward square leg, they were ticking along nicely at 83 for 1 off 15 overs.Related

And in Bangladesh’s chase, they struck early. Najibullah Zadran’s direct hit from backward point found Tanzim Hasan just short of his ground at the non-striker’s end, while Fazalhaq Farooqi induced a chop-on from Litton Das. At 27 for 2 in the seventh over – and with Rashid Khan yet to bowl – Afghanistan had Bangladesh under some pressure, even if the target was only 157.But first with the bat and then in the field, they brought about their own demise. Rahmat Shah’s dismissal, miscuing a slog sweep against the spin off the first ball after drinks, set about a capitulation of 9 for 73. Perhaps surprised by a slower pitch than most had anticipated, nobody in their middle order managed more than 22.Hashmatullah Shahidi, their captain, personified a collective failure to find the right tempo with the bat. He had pledged on the eve of their tournament opener to play positively, but struggled painfully to 5 off 22 at one stage, rendered shotless by Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shakib. Shahidi eventually started to shift through the gears, then lurched into the sixth one without the clutch down, hoicking Mehidy up to mid-on for 18 off 38.”We just had soft dismissals, really,” Jonathan Trott, their head coach, said. “Guys giving their wicket away, and going against what we had as a game plan. We got close to where we wanted to be, playing in the warm-up games, but it’s about dealing with the pressure of World Cup cricket and playing in major tournaments. That’s where we fell short today.Afghanistan played fewer ODIs between World Cups than any other team at this tournament•Associated Press”The middle order needs to take more responsibility; but also, if there’s momentum in the game, try and wrestle it back. It just seemed to go all Bangladesh’s way. No one stayed there and tried to absorb some pressure. It seemed to be one-dimensional, a little bit. That’s something we’ve got to work on.”In the field, there were moments of brilliance: Najibullah’s direct hit, and Rahmat’s spectacular catch at mid-off to dismiss Mehidy for 57. And yet Mehidy had already had two lives, dropped by Najibullah at point on 16 and by Mujeeb at deep third on 23. And neither was a difficult chance. The moment of defeat told the story: having plucked the ball out of the sky and held onto a screamer six overs previously, Rahmat misfielded Najmul Hossain Shanto’s off drive on the bounce, and the ball spilled away to the boundary for four. Afghanistan’s moments of brilliance were not underpinned by the basics.”We’ve seen it in spurts,” Trott said. “We just need to do it more consistently – over longer periods of time. Certainly over 100 overs for an ODI. It’s a long day, and you need to be on all the time. Being more consistent in our basics is what’s going to look after us going forward in this tournament. I’m looking forward to seeing how they respond.”This was Afghanistan’s 13th World Cup defeat in a row, spanning three editions, and Sunday marks three months since their most recent ODI win. Heading into this tournament, they were perceived to be a dangerous team in these conditions, but with their next two fixtures against India and England – both in Delhi – they could soon be out of semi-final contention before the World Cup is two weeks old.Perhaps they simply do not play this format enough. A relative dearth of recent 50-over fixtures is a theme across teams at this tournament, but most sides have named squads that have extensive experience to fall back on. Afghanistan are a young side, and played fewer ODIs (29) between World Cups than any other team at this tournament.”We know the areas we need to improve,” Trott said. “We’ve got two big games in Delhi now against India and England. We travel to Delhi tomorrow, have a couple of practices, and then a big match against India [on Wednesday] which is going to be a great spectacle, and I know the boys will be really, really up for it.”

Caroline Graham Hansen to the rescue! Barcelona star's brilliant late chip gives Norway narrow win over plucky Finland to all-but-confirm qualification to European Championship knockout stages

Despite still not clicking as a unit, Norway were rescued by Caroline Graham Hansen to see off a stubborn Finland 2-1.

Following a disjointed 2-1 win in the opening game against Switzerland, Gemma Grainger would have been hoping her Norway side would demonstrate slightly more cohesion against a strong Finland.

Two minutes into the game, it appeared as if her wish had come true with a floated Frida Maanum switch finding Caroline Graham Hansen in acres of space. The winger skipped to the byline and her cut-back was scuffed into the net by Finland’s Eva Nystrom, who made a complete mess of an attempted clearance, to put Norway ahead.

The Gresshoppene dominance continued and, if not for heroics by Anna Koivunen in the Finland goal, should have been out of sight within 30 minutes. Yet, Finland survived the onslaught and capitalised on yet more complacency in the Norwegian side. Sloppy passing out of the back allowed Oona Siren to take up the ball in space and find Oona Sevenius who struck into the top-right corner and flip the game on its head.

As the second half began, Norway continued to wilt as Finland stepped up the tempo. On the hour mark, Eveliina Summanen came close as her curled effort was saved onto the post by the diving Cecilie Fiskerstrand. Just when Finland looked to be taking the game to Norway, Graham Hansen came to life. She blazed over a golden opportunity to take the lead after 81 minutes, but then, after 84 minutes, sent in a lovely chip to the back-post which clipped the upright and bounced in. The Barcelona star had handed Norway an undeserved lead, but one that they held onto.

After both sides won their opening games of the tournament, this result puts Norway on six points and clear at the top of the group. Finland remain on three points and are still well positioned to qualify from the group. Switzerland and Iceland face each other later on Sunday evening knowing that defeat will see them on the verge of being knocked out of the competition.

AFPTHE MVP

Caroline Graham Hansen was the brightest spark on the pitch. She set up the opening goal with a great run and then was the match winner in the dying moments for Norway. Her chip to the back post may have looked like a cross, but she will no doubt claim she meant a brilliant finish.

THE BIG LOSER

Finland will be devastated to end up on the losing side against Norway after a phenomenal defensive display. The Finnish team were by far the more impressive unit and probably deserved to take all the points. Koivunen, in particular, warranted a place on the winning side after a number of fantastic saves, but Graham Hansen's class proved too much.

Cummins and ODIs, not quite a love story just yet

It’s been a dozen years since his debut, but the Australia captain admits he’s still coming to grips with the format

Firdose Moonda11-Oct-20231:39

Cummins: ‘It’s a clash of two very similar teams’

The strategies involved in structuring a spell in ODIs still present Pat Cummins with a conundrum he is keen to conquer, 12 years after making his debut in the format. That may seem a strange takeaway from an engagement with an Australian captain under some pressure after his team’s defeat to India and their struggles against spin, but it’s a small example of a bigger picture that we will be talking about all tournament: the future of this format. We don’t even need to go through the proposals to scrap bilateral ODIs and confine the format to World Cups only, because in Cummins, we have a ready example. He had only played 19 matches between the last World Cup and this one; and including Australia’s defeat to India in their World Cup opener this time, he has played only three this year, and just 78 across a dozen years. The consequence is that it has taken him longer than it may otherwise have to feel confident in his tactical approach to ODIs.”Early in my career, I found it a hard balance between Test cricket and T20, and I was getting too funky,” Cummins said at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, the day before Australia prepared to play South Africa. “With one-day cricket, your roles can be very different – from being an opening bowler with a ball that swings, to coming on first change and maybe bowling cross-seamers where you are trying to defend and get your wickets through pressure. It’s a different kind of challenge to the other formats.”Related

Defensive Australia burnt by India's spin trio in Chepauk furnace

It is also what Cummins called “the most physically taxing” of the three formats, because as we know from the ICC slogan – it really, truly takes one day. One. Whole. Day. Although the duration of a Test and the intensity of an T20 can’t be matched in an ODI, the amount of time spent on the feet and the kilometres run in the legs will be more than both the other versions of the game.”The biggest challenge is that you’ve got ten overs [to bowl]. It’s quite a physical format,” Cummins said of ODIs. “I find it the most physically taxing if you are doing two or three games in a week. We are doing 15k (kilometres) in a 50-over match.”And then there’s the trade-off between consistency and creativity that must come into play in one-day cricket, where some level of patience is required alongside a touch of all-out attack.”In T20, if you bowl one really good over that can be match-winning. But in one-day cricket, it’s not normally the case,” Cummins said. “And it’s rare that conditions are in the bowlers’ favour, which is fine. It’s just a challenge you’ve got to try and deal with. It’s tough but I do enjoy it.”Cummins expects at least one of those things will get easier on Thursday, when he thinks there will be pace and bounce on offer on a surface that remains something of a mystery. Only four ODIs have been played at the Ekana Stadium so far, with the highest score batting first being 249 in a full 50-over innings. Three of those ODIs were played in 2019, with one held last October, but the pitches have since been dug up and relaid. On Thursday, Australia play South Africa in Lucknow, where the pitches have been dug up and relaid•Getty ImagesCummins also feels his own form is “in as good a place as it’s ever been”, and backs himself to be “almost be prepared for anything”, including maybe “death bowling”. Against a South Africa line-up that is in good form, he also expects that he may have to try “to create a wicket out of nothing”, even as unorthodoxy is also something he has been working on.All that does not take away from his inexperience as ODI captain – since being named ODI captain in October last year, he has played only five out of Australia’s 15 ODIs – and the problems Australia have to solve in the middle overs. That’s where they lost the game against India, after they slipped from 110 for 2 in the 28th over to 199 all out. It’s something the batting group, under the guidance of Andy Flower, who has also been Lucknow Super Giants’ coach – the IPL team whose home ground is the Ekana Stadium – have been discussing, and much like Cummins’ own conclusions about bowling, it’s a balance between formats they’re seeking.”It’s no secret that the [middle-overs] period of the game seems to be the most important in one-day cricket,” Cummins said. “How do we create partnerships? If they’re bowling well, how do we shift the pressure back on to their bowlers, and try and force their hand to make some changes? It’s a real delicate balance in one-day cricket of not taking huge risks, but it’s not like Test cricket where you can wait it out. You have to keep the run rate ticking over.”The middle overs are also thought to be the hill on which ODI cricket may die, unless the narrative that unfolds in that passage is captivating even if nuanced. As Cummins hinted, those overs are the Goldilocks of the game where players are required to not do too much of one thing or too little of another, and for Australia, it’s about finding out how much is just right.
