Arsenal now racing Real Madrid and Barcelona for £35m "true football artist"

Arsenal are now racing Real Madrid and Barcelona for an attacking midfielder with a £35m release clause, according to a report.

Gunners eyeing talented youngsters

While one of Mikel Arteta’s main priorities for the summer is likely to be bringing in a new striker, the manager is also keen on bringing in talented young players for his future project.

One position in which Arteta is looking to strengthen is left-back, and 19-year-old Ajax defender Jorrel Hato has now emerged as an option, having been admired by the Gunners for a considerable period of time.

Hato’s first-team experience in the Eredivisie indicates he could be capable of pushing for a starting spot straight away, but the north Londoners also have some more up-and-coming targets in mind.

Arsenal could make move for £243k-p/w star who has strong bond with Arteta

The Gunners have identified a “world-class” forward as a top target, and could make an approach during the summer transfer window.

Arteta’s side are also seriously considering a move for Dinamo Tbilisi defender Saba Kharebashvili, who is just 17 years old, and they have now made contact to discuss a deal, although there could be fierce competition from Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Arsenal may also have to do battle with Madrid for the signature of River Plate’s Franco Mastantuono, according to a report from Spain, which states they have now set their sights on the young attacking midfielder.

Mastantuono, who has a £35m release clause in his River Plate contract, has started to attract the attention of some of Europe’s top clubs, owing to his meteoric rise in Argentina, with Liverpool, Barcelona and Chelsea also being named as potential suitors.

The Gunners have been impressed by the 17-year-old’s vision and ability on the ball, viewing him as a player who could add creativity to their midfield, and River Plate have reluctantly accepted the youngster will soon move to Europe.

"Superstar" Mastantuono could go right to the top

Freelance scout Ben Mattinson has lauded the young Argentine as a “superstar”, and for good reason, given that he has already established himself as a first-team regular for River Plate, during which time he’s displayed his play-making abilities.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has also described the starlet as a “true football artist”, and he has put in some top performances in recent weeks, most recently scoring in his side’s Copa Argentina triumph over Ciudad de Bolivar.

Albeit in Argentina, Mastantuono establishing himself as a key player for the senior team at such a young age is no mean feat, and it indicates the River Plate ace could be able to make the step up to the Premier League before long.

£35m is a huge sum to pay for a 17-year-old, but the teenager is drawing attention from the likes of Real Madrid and Barça for a reason, and it could be a real show of intent if Arsenal are able to win the race for his signature.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore assault puts Northamptonshire on back foot

Aggressive, unbeaten innings of 95 from 71 sets up strong Somerset reply

ECB Reporters Network05-May-2023Tom Kohler-Cadmore blasted a thrilling first half-century for Somerset to bat them into a promising position on the second day of the LV= Insurance County Championship match with Northamptonshire at TauntonThe visitors began by extending their overnight first innings score of 137 for 4 to 255 all out, James Sales contributing 57, while Jack Leach (3 for 15) and Lewis Gregory (3 for 66) were the most successful bowlers. In reply, Somerset slipped to 61 for 3 before Cameron Bancroft helped Kohler-Cadmore add 53. The former Yorkshire player went on to finish unbeaten on 95, off just 71 balls, having smote 16 fours and a six, with his side 199 for 4, trailing by 56.Play started at 11.30pm following heavy showers, with Northamptonshire looking to claim a first batting point of the season. Sales, on 5, survived a shoulder-high chance to Bancroft at second slip off Craig Overton and it was Gregory who made the first breakthrough with the score on 164 when Rob Keogh, on 19, fell lbw looking to on-drive a fullish delivery.Somerset’s seamers went past the bat on numerous occasions. But their luck changed when Harry Gouldstone followed a short, leg-side delivery from Peter Siddle and feathered a catch to wicketkeeper James Rew.At 181 for 6, Northants were in danger of missing out on batting points again. But Sales and Tom Taylor added 46 for the seventh wicket, forcing Somerset skipper Tom Abell to turn to the left-arm spin of Leach with the total on 203.Taylor pulled fours off successive deliveries from Overton. But, on 28, he carelessly drove Leach in the air to mid-off where Overton took a throat-high catch without having to move.It was 232 for 6 at lunch, with Sales unbeaten on 44. He reached a valuable 96-ball half-century, but began to run out of partners as Jordan Buckingham advanced down the pitch to Leach and was comfortably stumped by Rew. A Sales single off Siddle took his side to 250 and that elusive batting point, but five runs later Ben Sanderson was bowled by a quicker ball from Leach.Sales had to go on the offensive, but chose the wrong shot and was bowled by Siddle attempting a scoop to end the innings.Following a rain break at 8 for 0 in their reply, the home side’s top-order frailty was evident again as Tom Lammonby was trapped on the crease and fell lbw to White for 5.Sean Dickson’s Somerset struggles continued when, having reached 17, he drove at a wide ball from Sanderson and was caught behind. It left the former Durham opener with an average of 7.85 in seven innings for his new county.Abell walked to the crease with his side 25 for 2. He helped Bancroft take the score to 61, but then drove at Buckingham and edged a sharp catch to Ricardo Vasconcelos at first slip, giving the young Australian seamer his first Northants wicket.Kohler-Cadmore, also short of runs at the start of his Somerset career, nervously flashed at Buckingham’s next delivery, well wide of off stump, and was relieved to see the ball fly over the slips for four. He and Bancroft then set about showing Somerset supporters their true capabilities. Boundaries began to flow, with Bancroft particularly strong off the back foot and Kohler-Cadmore looking to be aggressive from the outset.Bancroft brought the 100 up with a sweet clip off his legs for four off White, while his partner appeared intent on hitting his way into form, taking two fours off an over from Sanderson. At 113 for 3, Northants successfully requested a change of ball. It worked immediately as Bancroft got a thick edge to White and wicketkeeper Gouldstone took a low diving catch.Undeterred, Kohler-Cadmore remained in one-day mode and reached a sparkling fifty off just 37 balls, with 11 fours. The bowlers began to bowl shorter to him and he took up the challenge with some meaty pull shots.A straight six off Buckingham brought up another half-century stand, to which the patient Rew contributed seven runs. Kohler-Cadmore was dropped at mid-off on 86 by a backpedalling White off Buckingham, but by then had announced his Somerset arrival in style.

Newcastle looking at "truly special" 20 y/o as potential Isak replacement

Newcastle United are reportedly viewing a “truly special” player as a possible replacement for Alexander Isak this summer, should the striker move on to pastures new.

Isak's Newcastle future under threat

Isak has enjoyed a stunning season for the Magpies, standing out as one of the best strikers in world football and causing defences endless problems with his pace, link-up play and deadly finishing.

The Swede has scored 19 goals in 24 appearances in the Premier League in 2024/25 to date, and he has been integral for Newcastle throughout the campaign, arguably proving to be the first name on Eddie Howe’s team sheet.

Unfortunately, there are rumours linking Isak with a move away from St James’ Park at the end of the season, and while the Magpies will be extremely stubborn when it comes to keeping hold of him, an earth-shattering bid could ultimately be too great to turn down given the need to balance the books with PSR.

A recent report has claimed that Liverpool have “growing interest” in the 25-year-old, while Arsenal have also been mentioned as potential suitors time after time. Now, a possible replacement has been linked with a switch to Newcastle later in the year.

Newcastle interested in "truly special" striker

According to a new update from Caught Offside, Newcastle are keen on signing Porto youngster Samu Aghehowa in the summer window, with the Magpies recruitment team having a “growing appreciation” for him as a possible Isak successor.

The Premier League outfit are no doubt having to make plans for life without Isak, just in case the worst does happen, and the 20-year-old is one of the options mentioned in the report, as well as Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres.

Samu Aghehowa celebrates for Porto.

Samu may still be a young player learning his trade, but there is a reason why Newcastle reportedly feel he could be an able long-term successor to their current superstar.

The Spaniard has scored 13 goals in just 15 Primeira Liga starts for Porto this season, as well as netting six times in the Europa League, and football talent scout Jacek Kulig has called him a “truly special” player.

Aghehowa already looks such a polished footballer, despite his age, and while Newcastle fans will be desperate not to lose Isak for many more years to come, the Porto man is a hugely exciting talent who could at least help fill the void.

He has represented Spain at four different youth levels, including scoring six times in nine outings for the Under-21s, so he is a young player with genuine pedigree.

Hopefully, Newcastle don’t have to look at signing a new marquee forward, but bringing Samu in as competition for the Sweden international certainly wouldn’t go amiss, especially with Callum Wilson likely to move on this summer.

Daren Sammy appointed West Indies white-ball coach; Andre Coley to take charge of Test team

Sammy has coaching experience in the CPL and PSL, but this will be his first assignment in international cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff12-May-2023

Daren Sammy has some coaching experience in T20 leagues, but not in international cricket•Peter Della Penna

Daren Sammy, who led West Indies to two T20 World Cup titles, has been named head coach of West Indies’ T20I and ODI teams. Andre Coley, who was West Indies’ interim coach after Phil Simmons resigned, will be in charge of the Test and West Indies A teams.Sammy had applied only for the white-ball job, according to Kishore Shallow, who took over from Ricky Skerritt as CWI president in March. Shallow also said that a total of 20 applications from around the world had come to the board. Former West Indies captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who had coached Jamaica Tallawahs to the CPL title in 2022, was among those who had applied for the job. A panel of five, comprising Jimmy Adams, CWI’s director of cricket, Enoch Lewis, the chair of cricket committee, Oneka Martin-Bird, the board’s HR manager, Debra Coryat-Patton, one of CWI’s newly independent directors, and Shallow conducted the interviews.Sammy’s first assignment will be a three-match ODI series against the UAE in Sharjah in June, which will form part of the preparations for the World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe in June-July.

“It will be a challenge but one that I’m ready for and excited about,” Sammy said in a CWI statement. “I’m really looking forward to the opportunity, especially looking at the players we have and the impact that I believe I can have in the dressing room. I believe I will bring the same approach as I had as a player: the passion, the desire for success, and my undying love for West Indies cricket.”When I look around there is an abundance of talent, and what I saw in South Africa in the white-ball matches under new captains Shai Hope and Rovman Powell and the leadership provided by Andre Coley, there is great belief that we can do well. I’m looking forward to imparting my knowledge, my tactical acumen, my communication skills and my man-management skills. I get excited about putting the plans together and seeing the players execute them.”Sammy has coaching experience in the CPL and the PSL, but this will be his first assignment in international cricket. While Sammy is not a certified coach, Shallow pointed out that he fulfilled all the criteria necessary for a coaching role. “There’s a different set of criteria that you know don’t necessarily need to be a Level 3 [coach],” Shallow said. “It’s ideal, but when we go through the different assessments, he certainly qualified to be the head coach, which is why he was shortlisted in the first place and then he was interviewed by a panel of five.”Sammy’s leadership skills, both as a captain and coach, were central to St Lucia Kings’ recent success in the CPL. In 2020, he beat the odds and captained an unfancied Kings side to the CPL final despite Chris Gayle pulling out of the season. That final was Sammy’s last game in the CPL as a player. In CPL 2021, he was appointed Kings’ T20 cricket consultant and brand ambassador. He worked with coach Andy Flower as part of the backroom staff. Last year, Sammy took over from Flower as head coach and led them to the Eliminator, where Kings lost to eventual champions Tallawahs. Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph, allrounder Roston Chase and wicketkeeper-batter Johnson Charles were among the players who flourished under Sammy’s leadership at Kings.Related

At the PSL, Sammy had coached Peshawar Zalmi in 2020 and 2021 before being reappointed to the post for PSL 2023. Sammy had been a mainstay for the franchise since PSL’s inception in 2016, and had been one of the more recognisable overseas faces for the league. As for Coley, his first assignment will be the two-match home Test series against India in July. “I am looking forward to the challenges ahead, as well as the opportunities as we sharpen our focus on moving up the Test rankings, and qualifying for the World Test Championship final in June 2025,” Coley said. “I also look forward to working with all our stakeholders, deepening relationships and fostering a high-performance mindset.”I am also excited to be working closely with the ‘A’ team as we seek to optimise opportunities for teams to play competitive cricket outside of our first-class competition and giving players greater exposure to different conditions at the international level. I believe that my expertise in the use of analytics, my leadership style and technical knowledge along with collaborative efforts alongside Daren, will make a positive contribution to player development and team performances.”Brian Lara, who is currently with Sunrisers Hyderabad as their head coach in the IPL, will continue to assist West Indies as a performance mentor as his contract runs until January 2024.

Ben Green stars as Somerset rout rock-bottom Middlesex

Somerset 142 for 1 (Kohler-Cadmore 64) beat Middlesex 136 (Green 4-20, Davey 3-34) by nine wicketsRampant Somerset made it five victories from as many Vitality Blast South Group games with a nine-wicket demolition of winless Middlesex at the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton. On a sunny evening in front of a packed crowd, the visitors were bowled out for a modest 136 in 18.4 overs after losing the toss, Ben Green claiming four for 20 and Josh Davey three for 34. Wicketkeeper Jack Davies top scored with 32.In reply, Somerset breezed to 142 for one off just 13.3 overs, Tom Kohler-Cadmore leading the way with 64, off 31 balls, with seven fours and four sixes, and Tom Banton making 27 before retiring hurt. The victory was as emphatic as the formbook suggested it would be and left Middlesex without a point from their first five group matches.Having been rested for the previous game against Kent, a refreshed Craig Overton steamed in from the River End at the start of the game, bowling four fiery overs for just 15 in a single spell. The accurate Davey profited at the other end, scattering the stumps of Joe Cracknell and Pieter Malan in his first two overs to leave Middlesex 14 for two.Max Holden threatened briefly, hitting a straight six and 2 fours in the sixth over, bowled by Davey, but despite his efforts the power play ended with his side 40 for two.Holden also pulled a six off Peter Siddle, who ended his nine-ball frenzy by bowling him for 22, attempting a big shot through the off side.It was 59 for four when Roelof van der Merwe’s second delivery of left-arm spin saw Stephen Eskinazi, on 18, loft a catch to long-off and 68 for five when Green struck in the following over, the 11th of the innings, Ryan Higgins being caught at long-on for six.Five runs later, Luke Hollman chipped a catch to mid-off to give Lewis Gregory his first wicket. Davies and Martin Andersson then produced the most substantial stand of the innings, adding 43 before Andersson, who had struck a six and two fours in his 25, aimed a reverse pull off Davey and guided the ball straight to Tom Abell at backward point.Davies hit sweetly-timed sixes off van der Merwe and Siddle, as well as three fours, before departing in the 19th over, caught at deep mid-wicket off Green.Toby Roland-Jones fell to the next delivery and Green wrapped up the innings by dismissing Nathan Fernandez via a boundary catch by Kohler-Cadmore.A target of 137 never looked likely to test a Somerset team brimming with confidence. So it proved, as Banton and Will Smeed set about the task in typically positive fashion.Smeed has struggled for runs in the early group games and the scorer of the first ever century in The Hundred was relieved to survive a loud lbw appeal from Roland-Jones with his score on five. The response was a straight six and pulled four in the same over from the talented 21-year-old, who had another scare in Roland-Jones’ next over when dropped by Hollman, a low chance running in from deep mid-wicket.Smeed’s luck ran out at the start of the fifth over when bowled by Tom Helm for 26 off 14 balls. By then the scoreboard read 39 for one and he was replaced by Kohler-Cadmore, making his 150th T20 appearance.Another catch went down when Banton, on 18, top-edged a pull shot off Helm and Roland-Jones spilled a skyer. With such a small score to defend, Middlesex could not afford such generosity. At the end of six overs, Somerset were 58 for one and in command. Kohler-Cadmore audaciously uppercut Helm for six and also hit two fours as 17 came off the seventh. At 75 for one, Banton had to hobble off with a suspected side strain, but by then the outcome was almost beyond doubt. Kohler-Cadmore signalled as much with a straight six off Roland-Jones as Somerset reached the halfway stage of their innings needing only a further 31.The former Yorkshire player reached his half-century off 28 balls before ending the game with a huge six off Roland-Jones, Tom Abell (25) providing solid support in an unbroken stand of 67.

He’s now worth 4175% more: Wilder must regret selling Sheffield United star

Chris Wilder very much has Sheffield United woven into his DNA, with the Blades boss a United player on two occasions during his playing days, on top of now also taking on the Bramall Lane reins the same amount of times.

He will be gunning for his third promotion at the helm come the end of this long and dramatic Championship campaign, with the South Yorkshire outfit in a healthy spot in the division to do just that, even with the demoralising 3-1 defeat to promotion rivals Leeds United still hurting.

SheffieldUnitedmanagerChris Wilder reacts after the match

Over the past couple of promotion stories, Wilder has relied on some lethal attackers to get his team over the line, away from the current crop of Tom Cannon and Co.

Down memory lane: Chris Wilder's best strikers at Sheffield United

Of course, no list chronicling some of the revered United manager’s best forwards would be complete without a mention of Blades icon Billy Sharp.

The EFL veteran – who has ten goals this season on the books of nearby Doncaster Rovers – would fire home a ridiculous 129 strikes from 377 United appearances, with his sublime 23 league strikes during the 2018/19 season getting his team over the line to move up to the top-flight.

Away from the much-adored 39-year-old, Wilder has also had the likes of Oli McBurnie and David McGoldrick to call upon down the years, with McGoldrick still firing in the goals for Notts County in the same division Sharp now plies his trade in.

Amazingly, the ageing attacker has 13 strikes in 26 games for the promotion-chasers during 2024/25, with his time in South Yorkshire seeing him bag a memorable 30 times from 136 outings.

McBurnie would blow hot and cold a lot for Wilder’s men, but the Scotsman’s heroics last campaign – even as the Blades sunk down to the Championship – saw him land a bold switch to Las Palmas out in Spain, having kept his head held high with six strikes from 26 league encounters.

But, there is another former face that is removed from this conversation unfortunately, having been sold on during the fledging stages of his Bramall Lane education by Wilder, before then becoming a top striker elsewhere.

The ex-Sheffield United attacker now worth 4175% more

Worth around £290k during the peak of his playing days in South Yorkshire – according to Transfermarkt – it’s fair to say Che Adams’ short but sweet stint with the Blades set him up for a path to stardom.

Adams would only don a United strip for 55 clashes before moving onto pastures at Birmingham City, but the former non-league hotshot would take the EFL by storm with 15 strikes across those games.

Fast forward to last season and it’s clear that the Scotsman has been able to cement himself as a deadly sharpshooter in the second tier, having fired home 15 total league goals for Southampton on the way to the Saints tasting promotion.

Amazingly, Serie A side Torino would come calling for the “terrific” forward – as he was once lauded by Ally McCoist – services after that, with Adams now worth way more than his once meagre £290k price tag since making this leap to Italy.

As can be seen looking at the table above, Adams’ current inflated value stands at a way heftier £12.4m, with Torino winning themselves an outrageous steal, considering the 28-year-old joined on a free transfer.

Still, when weighing up his £290k price tag next to his new £12.4m valuation, that is a percentage increase of 4175%, with Adams settling in well to his new environment in Turin with eight strikes coming his way during 2024/25 to date.

In another reality, United might well have kept a firmer grip on Adams for longer, but Wilder will hope his camp at it is can triumphantly win promotion.

Not just Burn: 10/10 Newcastle ace had his "greatest game in black & white"

Newcastle United supporters would have been dreaming of their side lifting the EFL Cup come the end of a long, drawn-out final at Wembley, hopeful that Arne Slot’s Liverpool would have an off-day when it mattered most.

All of those dreams became a jubilant reality come full-time as, despite Federico Chiesa beating Nick Pope late on, the Magpies would finish the nail-biting match as 2-1 victors, bringing their long domestic trophy drought of 70 years to an unbelievable end.

Alexander Isak would ultimately score the winning goal but a word too for a Mr Dan Burn who would rightly lap up all of the plaudits come the full-time whistle.

It was his thunderous header that got Eddie Howe’s men up and running in the English capital, resulting in the towering centre-back lifting his team’s newly won honours with a beaming smile.

Dan Burn's performance in numbers

It has been a whirlwind few days for the Blyth-born colossus, with Burn receiving a first-ever England call-up by Thomas Tuchel a matter of days before this showdown versus Liverpool.

He didn’t look fazed by the big occasion whatsoever, especially when the 32-year-old powered home this header past Reds goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher just on the stroke of half-time.

Alexander Isak would then gift the Toon a two-goal cushion but Burn was imperious throughout away from his golden opener, with the Magpies number 33 winning seven duels besides from guiding that effort past Kelleher, on top of making 11 clearances to keep Liverpool at bay.

Also chipping in with two key passes, Burn was a calm man mountain across the exhilarating 90 minutes.

That said, one of his teammates put in an even more stunning display which could be regarded as one of his best ever donning Toon black and white.

10/10 Newcastle star was even better than Burn

Whilst Newcastle have splashed the cash on the likes of Isak and Co and they have been instant success stories, not everyone in the current first-team fold under Howe have always had it plain sailing on Tyneside.

Indeed, Joelinton had a wobbly introduction to life in England, with the ex-TSG 1899 Hoffenheim star once viewed as a £40m dud when lining up in the striker spot at St James’ Park.

Now, in a more well-suited central midfield role, the Brazilian has become a modern day great at the club, with Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope even heralding his showing against Liverpool as his “greatest game in black & white.”

That’s quite the claim considering Joelinton is now up to 216 games and counting at Newcastle, but his stellar numbers from this famous day out to London do back up Hope’s comments.
