Perfect Son replacement: Spurs weigh up late move for "unstoppable" PL star

It feels like everything that could have gone wrong for Tottenham Hotspur this season has gone wrong.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have been utterly devastated by injuries this year, with practically the entire backline missing much of the campaign and several key attackers also having to spend some time on the sidelines.

However, while these injuries have undoubtedly played a large part in the team’s dire form, it cannot be entirely put down to that, as some of the team’s supposed leaders, such as Son Heung-min, have been undeniably poor.

Heung-min Son for Tottenham

Fortunately, recent reports have touted a Premier League winger for a move to N17 this month, a winger who could be just the player to replace Son.

Tottenham Hotspur target Premier League star

According to a recent report from the Daily Mail, Tottenham are one of several teams interested in signing Marcus Rashford this month.

Transfer Focus

Alongside the Lilywhites, the report has revealed that West Ham United, Juventus, Napoli and Galatasaray are keen to land the Englishman on loan for the remainder of the season.

However, there remain two potential issues: the first is that he’d prefer a move to Barcelona, and the second is his enormous £375k-per-week wage.

With that said, if Spurs can secure the 27-year-old’s services on a short-term loan this month, it would surely add another dimension to their flagging attack, and he’d be an ideal replacement Son to boot.

Why Rashford would be an ideal replacement for Son

So, the first thing to say is that Son is undoubtedly a Spurs and Premier League great – he has scored 172 goals and provided 91 assists for them after all – but he’s set to turn 33 this summer, and as most fans will likely attest, he’s no longer the player he once was.

It is not a failing on his part, though, as research carried out by The Athletic shows wide players in the Premier League tend to hit their peak at age 26 and see their take-on numbers dramatically come down once they hit 31, so the South Korean superstar is simply a victim of time.

So, while he has been able to produce a reasonably impressive tally of ten goals and seven assists this season, it would be fair to say the club need to sign another dynamic left-winger to come in for him this season, which is where Rashford could come in.

Manchester United's MarcusRashfordwarms up as a substitute during the match

Now, before the pitchforks come out, there is no denying that the last season and a half has been incredibly underwhelming for the Englishman, but he’s still only 27, and while Ruben Amorim doesn’t rate him, prior campaigns tell us there is still a player in there.

For example, in the 22/23 season, he was simply unplayable, racking up a sensational haul of 30 goals and providing nine assists in 56 appearances, totalling 4304 minutes.

That means the “unstoppable” winger, as dubbed by Erik ten Hag, averaged a goal involvement every 1.43 games, or every 110.35 minutes, and if he was able to do that under the management of the recently fired Dutchman, then just think how effective he could be under the incredibly attacking Postecoglou.

Moreover, while he hasn’t been brilliant in the last season and a half, he’s still managed to rack up seven goals and three assists in 24 games this season, only 19 of which have been starts, so he’s not been quite as poor as some may believe.

Ultimately, this season has made it abundantly clear that Son’s time as a starter for Tottenham is rapidly coming to an end, and while there are questions over his commitment, Rashford has shown he has the raw ability to be the “difference-maker” analyst Ben Mattinson purports him to be.

Therefore, Daniel Levy and Co should do what they can to bring him to N17 this month, as even if things don’t work out, they can just send him back to Old Trafford in the summer.

49ers now agree deal for "class" £15,000-p/w player to leave Leeds United

Leeds United are now on the verge of sealing a deal to allow one member of their squad to depart this January as they look to trim Daniel Farke’s ranks.

Leeds transfer news

Though currently top of the Championship, Leeds are still looking to bolster their ranks this winter, according to reports.

The Elland Road side are reportedly eyeing a potential new goalkeeper following several mistakes from Illan Meslier, while second-choice shot-stopper Karl Darlow played against Harrogate Town and helped his side win 1-0 against the lower league local outfit.

Meanwhile, they have renewed their interest in Mergim Berisha for the remainder of the campaign as they look to add more firepower to their ranks.

For him to arrive, however, there may have to be movement out from the current frontline, which is already congested, and now that is precisely what appears to be happening at Elland Road.

Leeds agree attacker exit after offer

That comes as a free report from Hull Live claims that Leeds have “now sanctioned” Joe Gelhardt’s departure on loan for the remainder of the season, with the talented forward set to join Hull City for the second half of the Championship campaign.

It is even claimed that the move “could be confirmed in the next 48 hours” after he was left out of the squad against Harrogate Town, with Leeds and the 49ers accepting a loan offer from the Tigers.

Leeds forward Joe Gelhardt.

He is expected to be eligible for Hull City’s next game, when they face Millwall on Saturday, and it is added that watching Hull City fight back to draw 3-3 with Leeds a week ago “rubber-stamped his desire to join the Tigers”.

Gelhardt’s exit is no real surprise, with the forward having seen just nine minutes of Championship action over the first half of the campaign and starting just once in the Carabao Cup.

Though Farke dubbed him “a really top-class human being and he’s a quality player”, he opened the door to his departure earlier in the month.

“Joffy (Gelhardt) is a candidate (to leave) as he hasn’t played that much”, the Leeds boss explained ahead of his side’s clash with Harrogate Town.

Leeds United could be set to lose to a number of players this month…

1 ByBarney Lane Jan 4, 2025

However, Farke could be grateful that the move is only a loan, with Gelhardt held in high regard by the German taskmaster.

“I have an open relationship with him (Gelhardt) and have made it clear I rate him. It’s tough on him as he is a top character with his qualities; it is just a competition thing. I have preferred to stick with Joel Piroe and Mateo Joseph. It is tough for him as he works his socks off in every training session. He knows I trust him. His behaviour is unbelievable.

Gelhardt still has two and a half years left to run on his £15,000 a week deal at Elland Road, meaning that all parties will have a chance to re-assess his situation over the summer without the pressure of his contract running down, while the forward will get some much needed first-team action, albeit with one of Leeds’ Championship rivals.

Romelu Lukaku 2.0: Everton lining up late swoop for "phenomenal" PL star

The return of David Moyes to Everton was met with great fanfare after the Scottish manager replaced Sean Dyche at the helm for the remainder of the final season at Goodison Park.

People often say that players and managers should avoid going back to a place where they have already been successful, at risk of tainting the legacy set the first time, but it has been a terrific start to his second spell.

The Toffees have won two of his three Premier League matches in charge so far, beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 and Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0, after losing 1-0 to Aston Villa in his first game.

Moyes has got the players going and helped them to move seven points clear of the relegation zone, as they look to move well clear of the battle to avoid dropping down to the Championship at the end of the season.

Despite a strong start to his second spell at Goodison, the former Manchester United and West Ham boss is still looking to bolster his squad before the end of the January transfer window.

The deadline is next week and the Toffees are reportedly looking to bring in a forward who could be their next Romelu Lukaku…

Romelu Lukaku's Everton career

The Belgium international initially joined the club on loan from Chelsea for the 2013/14 campaign and was an instant hit on Merseyside, with a return of 15 goals and seven assists in 31 Premier League matches.

Lukaku came in as a player with top-flight experience, having played for West Brom on loan the previous season, and hit the ground running as a reliable outlet at the top end of the pitch.

The Belgian marksman’s sublime form on loan convinced the Toffees to splash a club-record fee of £28m to sign him permanently from Chelsea in the summer of 2014, which turned out to be a fantastic piece of business.

As you can see in the table above, Lukaku went on to score 20 or more goals in all three of his seasons as a permanent Everton player after his £28m switch from Stamford Bridge, which shows that the club certainly got their money’s worth for him.

The Toffees then made a gigantic profit on the powerful centre-forward when Manchester United signed him for a reported fee of £75m in the summer of 2017, after his 26-goal haul in the 2016/17 campaign.

Everton could, now, repeat the masterclass they played with Lukaku by swooping for another loan striker from a Premier League side this month.

Everton keen on Premier League forward

According to The Athletic, in a piece written by David Ornstein, Everton are one of a number of clubs interested in a late move for Brighton centre-forward Evan Ferguson.

The report claims that the Toffees are keen on a deal for the Ireland international and are lining up a swoop to bring him to Goodison Park on loan for the next four months or so.

It states that Brighton are open to sending the 20-year-old number nine out on a temporary deal if a move suits all parties, but it remains to be seen where they would be willing to send him.

Brighton & Hove Albion'sEvanFergusoncelebrates

The Athletic adds that West Ham United and Bournemouth, who are dealing with injuries to their own strikers, are among the other teams in the race to land the Brighton academy graduate before next week’s deadline.

It also reveals that there are clubs from Germany interested in Ferguson but that a move to the Premier League is the most likely scenario at this moment in time, which could come as a boost for the Toffees, although they still have to fend off interest from the Hammers and the Cherries.

Transfer Focus

Everton are in need of a striker after Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled up with a suspected hamstring injury against Brighton last time out, which is why they should push to get this move over the line.

Why Everton should sign Evan Ferguson

Like the Belgian forward, Ferguson cuts an imposing figure, at 6 foot, at the top end of the pitch and could provide the team with a presence in the number nine position.

It is the 20-year-old attacker’s finishing qualities, however, that could see him emerge as Lukaku 2.0 at Goodison Park, because he has proven himself to be lethal inside the box at Premier League level.

Injuries have hampered his attempts to become a regular starter at Brighton, as he has missed 24 games through injury since the start of last season, but the potential is there for him to be a star if Everton can bring him in and keep the youngster fit.

One of Lukaku’s biggest strengths during his time as a permanent player at Goodison was his lethal nature in front of goal. He scored 53 goals from 49.16 xG across three Premier League seasons after his £28m move, which illustrates how ruthless he was for the club.

Ferguson, who was hailed as “phenomenal” by teammate James Milner, has shown similar qualities in his limited game time for Brighton in recent seasons, which suggests that he has the potential to be a star for the Toffees if it all comes together.

As you can see in the table above, Ferguson has consistently outperformed his xG in the Premier League with the Seagulls and appears to have the quality in front of goal to make the most of any high-quality opportunities that come his way.

Calvert-Lewin has scored three goals from 6.11 xG in the Premier League this season and this suggests that the Irishman could come in to offer more than the Englishman in the finishing department.

Newcastle hold fresh talks over signing "incredible" £84m Isak replacement

Newcastle United have now held fresh talks over signing an “incredible” £84m striker, amid fears over Alexander Isak’s future, according to a report.

Update on Alexander Isak's future

Isak is right at the top of Arsenal’s transfer shortlist, but the striker made it clear he is very happy at St. James’ Park on Saturday, saying: “Everywhere you go in this city, everyone is loving Newcastle, which is special. It is the best feeling I have had in my career. Scoring goals in front of these fans, it is special.”

The Swedish striker remains contracted until the summer of 2028, so the Magpies are in a strong bargaining position, but there is widespread interest from some of the Premier League’s top clubs, with Chelsea also being named as potential suitors.

As such, Eddie Howe is now running the rule over potential replacements for the striker, with PAOK’s Stefanos Tzimas now on the list of targets, and there is deemed to be a 35% chance the forward moves to St. James’ Park in the summer.

Jan 20, 2025

There has now been a new update on another player Newcastle are targeting, with Football Transfers revealing they have now held fresh talks over a deal to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.

Gyokeres has a release clause of €100m (£84m) in his contract with the Portuguese club, but it is believed they would be willing to sanction his departure for a lower fee this summer.

Sporting CP's ViktorGyokerescelebrates scoring their third goal

The Magpies have stepped up their pursuit of the 26-year-old as they are concerned about Isak’s long-term future at St. James’ Park, with the striker aware there is widespread interest in his signature.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United are also named as potential suitors for the Swedish striker, although a move to Old Trafford is deemed unlikely, as he wants to play for a club in the Champions League.

Gyokeres could be the perfect Isak replacement

There is no doubt that Newcastle’s primary concern will be keeping hold of Isak this summer, considering the 25-year-old has been in inspired form this season, bagging 15 goals in the Premier League.

However, should the Solna-born striker decide to move on this summer, there may be no better replacement than his compatriot, who has put in some top performances in the Liga Portugal and Champions League this season.

The “incredible” Sporting talisman has 22 goals and three assists in 18 league games this season, and he dismantled Manchester City by scoring a hat-trick in a 4-1 victory in the Champions League back in November.

Gyokeres has proven he is capable of playing for one of Europe’s top clubs, so it is promising news that Newcastle have now opened talks, but they will likely have to qualify for the Champions League to stand a chance of winning the race for his signature.

    WHAT LAMPARD SAID

He told Sky Sports: "The experienced managers can have a thousand stories. They've been there and done it, so they can offer that advice. I'm the same – if any manager wants to come and see what we do here at the training ground, I'm very open with that. I think the most confident and the best are generally like that. But he'll sit down for an hour and chat about football. I really respect that. I hope that, if I can ever be like that, that's what I would aspire to."

86% duels won: Celtic ace has just rescued Lawwell’s Deadline Day disaster

It was no secret that Celtic were in the market to sign a new number nine in the recent January transfer window after they allowed Kyogo Furuhashi to join Rennes on a permanent deal.

The Hoops sold the Japan international and left themselves with Adam Idah as their only senior, recognised, number nine option heading into the second half of the season.

Celtic’s Irish marksman got on the scoresheet in the 6-0 win over Dundee in the Scottish Premiership at Parkhead on Wednesday night, but it remains to be seen how well they will fare if he were to get injured for a period of time.

Celtic's deadline day business

The Bhoys had been in talks with Brondby over a deal to sign Denmark U21 international centre-forward Mathias Kvistgaarden on a permanent deal to replace Kyogo.

However, those talks broke down over a difference in valuation of the 22-year-old striker, who was rated at a whopping £10m by the Superliga side.

Celtic were then linked with a last-gasp swoop for West Ham United forward Danny Ings, who had worked with Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool, on deadline day, but nothing materalised with the former England international.

Peter Lawwell, ultimately, failed to bring in a striker to replace Kyogo and, understandably, that could be viewed as a disaster in some quarters, given that it has left Idah to carry a lot of responsibility.

Performance in Numbers

However, he did manage to strike a deal to sign Jeffrey Schlupp on loan from Premier League side Crystal Palace, and his performance on Wednesday suggests that the deadline day business may not have been a disaster after all.

Jeffrey Schlupp's performance against Dundee

The Ghana international arrived at Parkhead as a versatile option to fill several different positions, as he can play in midfield, on the left wing, or at left-back.

Jeffrey Schlupp

There may have been some concerns over what he would bring to the field after he made just 12 appearances as a substitute, failing to register a goal or an assist and losing 57% of his duels, in the Premier League during the first half of the season.

However, the former Leicester City star’s performance off the bench against Dundee suggests that he will bring plenty of quality and strength to the team in the second half of this season.

As you can see in the table above, Schlupp produced a dominant display after coming on to replace Greg Taylor at left-back for the Hoops on Wednesday.

Taylor only won two duels and failed to make any tackles in his 72 minutes on the field, which speaks to just how impressive the Palace loanee’s performance was.

Celtic defender Greg Taylor

He fit like a glove in Rodgers’ Celtic team and appears to be a player who is ready to hit the ground running to contribute to a successful second half of the season.

This means that the deadline day business from Lawwell may not have been a disaster after all, despite the lack of a striker signing, because Schlupp appears to have what it takes to be an excellent, strong, addition to the team.

So, while fans may not be pleased with everything that went down on deadline day, it was not a disaster of a window because they still managed to bring in this excellent, versatile, star.

Their own Marmoush: Liverpool could sign “pure difference-maker” for £84m

Liverpool are well on course to clinch a second Premier League title in the club’s history as they sit six points clear of Arsenal, with a game in hand still to play.

The Reds ensured that the gap remained at six points over the weekend with a convincing 4-1 win over newly-promoted side Ipswich Town at Anfield.

Two goals from Cody Gakpo, after strikes from Dominik Szoboszlai and Mo Salah, secured all three points for Arne Slot’s team, which meant that the Gunners did not gain any ground on them.

The Reds, who are also top of their Champions League group, have benefitted from Manchester City having their first huge wobble in the Premier League in many years.

Pep Guardiola’s team have lost six of their 23 matches in the division, leaving them 12 points behind Liverpool, having played a game more, as it stands.

The reigning champions have, however, dipped into the market to bolster their squad ahead of the second half of the season and that may be a concern moving forward, more so for next season, after they swooped to sign Omar Marmoush this month.

Why Omar Marmoush could concern Liverpool

Back in October of 2024, Sky Germany reported that Liverpool were in talks with Eintracht Frankfurt over a deal to sign the Egypt international to bolster their attacking options.

This suggests that the recruitment team, and Slot, viewed Marmoush as a player with the quality, or potential, to come in and improve the team’s attack with his play as a centre-forward or out wide on the left.

Manchester City, however, ultimately won the race for his signature and reportedly paid a fee of £59m to bring him to The Etihad, before he made his debut in a 3-1 win over Chelsea on Saturday.

The 25-year-old star was signed by the Cityzens, and wanted by Liverpool, after a return of 37 goals and 20 assists in 67 matches for Frankfurt in all competitions during his time with the German outfit.

Marmoush racked up 20 goals and 14 assists in 27 outings in all competitions in the first half of the 2024/25 campaign, which shows that he has arrived in England in red-hot form in the final third.

As you can see in some of the clips above, Marmoush is a direct, fast, and dynamic forward who can score all types of goals from different positions across the pitch with his exceptional footwork, speed, and finishing ability.

This is why Liverpool may be concerned about City’s deal to sign the forward, because he has the potential to be a big signing for Guardiola who can help to bring them back to their best, whether that happens this season or for their title-challenge next term.

The Reds could, however, sign their answer to Omar Marmoush by dipping into the market to land their own right-footed left-sided attacker from the Bundesliga.

Liverpool's interest in Bundesliga forward

German journalist Christian Falk recently revealed, whilst speaking on The Daily Briefing, that Liverpool are one of a number of clubs that are interested in a deal to sign Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund.

Transfer Focus

The reporter claimed that Dortmund would prefer to sell him to a team from abroad, amid interest from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, which could provide the Reds with a boost in their pursuit of the England U21 international.

Speaking on The Daily Briefing, as transcribed by CaughtOffside, Falk said: “It’s true. Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea are also in the transfer race with Bayern for Jamie Gittens.

“Dortmund are currently looking for a transfer fee of €100m. Should Premier League clubs bid for the Englishman, Bayern are aware that completing a transfer on their end will be difficult.”

This means that Liverpool would have to splash out a mega transfer fee of £84m to secure a deal for the 20-year-old youngster, although it remains to be seen whether the interested parties want to get a transfer done now or if they are willing to wait until the summer.

If the Reds can see off interest from the likes of Chelsea and Bayern Munich, Slot could land his own version of Marmoush by signing the former Manchester City academy starlet.

Why Jamie Gittens could be Liverpool's Omar Marmoush

The obvious connection between the two players is that they have both starred in the Bundesliga this season and are both right-footed players who can operate on the left side, cutting in on their favoured foot, or in central areas.

Gittens has not quite matched Marmoush’s incredible haul of 34 goal contributions in 27 matches in all competitions for Frankfurt, but the Dortmund dynamo is five years younger than the Manchester City signing and has shown immense potential with his performances in the German top-flight and the Champions League this term.

In Europe, the English whiz has racked up four goals and two ‘big chances’ created in seven appearances – six starts – in the league phase, which shows that he has made a big impact in the final third in that competition.

The £84m-rated star, who was once described as a “pure difference-maker” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has the pace, technical quality, and movement to constantly make things happen at the top end of the pitch, much like Marmoush.

As you can see in the table above, Gittens has also offered plenty of quality in the Bundesliga this season, with 12 goals and ‘big chances’ created combined in 15 starts.

Overall, the England youth international has contributed with 11 goals and seven ‘big chances’ created in 21 starts in the Bundesliga and the Champions League combined, which shows that he could arrive at Anfield to make a big impact in the final third on a consistent basis.
