Sky Sports: Man Utd eyeing move for new £82,000-p/w left-back for Amorim

INEOS are plotting a move to sign an “electric” £82,000-a-week left-back, as Ruben Amorim has made it a priority at Manchester United, according to a Sky Sports reporter.

The Red Devils played their first game under the Portuguese boss on Sunday, and while they were held to a 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town, there were some early positives for the head coach to take, as he continues to get to know his new crop of players.

Man Utd make approach to "machine" after internal talks, could cost £40m+

The Red Devils have now made contact.

ByBrett Worthington Nov 26, 2024 Man Utd transfer news

The club’s hierarchy appear to be keen to back Amorim in the upcoming transfer windows, as long as the finances are right, but there is also a willingness for them not to rip up the entire squad. However, as every new manager or head coach wants, Amorim will have his eyes on potential players he would like to bring to Old Trafford.

One player who has emerged on their radar in recent weeks is Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku, and United have made him a top target ahead of the January transfer window. The forward is not getting regular minutes at Stamford Bridge, and United are ready to go all out and bring him to Old Trafford in a deal that could cost them £50 million.

As well as Nkunku, Man United have now made an approach to Ederson from Atalanta. The Red Devils held internal talks over a possible deal and have now approached his agents to get an understanding of a potential transfer. Atalanta don’t want to sell but could be willing to listen to offers should they receive around £40 million. But it seems that there is a position that has become more of a priority for Amorim, as the club has identified a new target.

Man Utd eyeing move for AC Milan's Theo Hernandez

According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Manchester United are now closely monitoring Theo Hernandez of AC Milan, as they continue their search for a new left-wing back.

The Red Devils do have Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia as their regular left-backs, but both have been injured for a while now, and even though they both appeared in the matchday squad against Ipswich, with Shaw coming off the bench, signing a player for that position is still key for the club.

Hernandez, who has been dubbed “electric” by football analyst Ben Mattinson, has been at Milan since July 2019, when he joined from Real Madrid, and he has been a key player for the Italian side in his six seasons there, playing 30 or more games in all five campaigns before this 2024/25 season.

The 27-year-old has started eight of the 10 league games he has played so far, during which he has captained Milan on multiple occasions. Now, according to Plettenberg, he is someone United are keeping a close eye on, as Amorim has made signing a new left-back a priority.

Hernandez is under contract at Milan until the summer of 2026, so he could potentially be a cheap option, as the Italian giants may have to sell him if he is unwilling to sign a contract extension. While he may not cost as much as other players in a transfer fee, he comes with hefty wages, as he earns €98,654 a week, which is roughly £82,366 a week.

Dyche must now hand rare start to Everton’s "Lukaku-esque" star

Six-pointer is a term often used too freely in football, but Everton’s Premier League fixture against West Ham United on Saturday should be billed as such.

For the hosts, a poor performance could spell the end of Julen Lopetegui’s fledgling tenure, if reports are to be believed, with the Spaniard failing to inspire belief or fluency across the opening months of the campaign.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

Everton, conversely, have lost just one of their past six matches, but after starting the term with four top-flight defeats on the trot, there’s just cause for concerns around Sean Dyche’s position, especially with The Friedkin Group moving to acquire Farhad Moshiri’s 94% stake in the club, signalling the start of a new era.

The London Stadium has become a hotbed of trepidation and discontent, and this might be the perfect opportunity for The Toffees to latch onto the malaise and leapfrog the 14th-placed Londoners.

Everton team news

Jarrad Branthwaite has been introduced late on in both of Everton’s recent Premier League fixtures. Having recovered from injury, the touted centre-back could be in line for a mood-raising starting berth.

Having missed last week’s loss against Southampton, key midfield star Abdoulaye Doucoure is set to return, which comes as a big boost.

James Garner (back), Tim Iroegbunam and Youssef Chermiti (both foot) are still out of action, while Dyche has confirmed that Armando Broja, who was signed this summer but has not yet made his Everton debut, is expected to join team training during the imminent international break.

Chelsea striker Armando Broja.

Even without Broja’s availability, Dyche must be thinking about dropping Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has flattered to deceive of late.

Why Dominic Calvert-Lewin should be dropped

Praise for Calvert-Lewin; he’s started ten successive Premier League matches to start the campaign. The last time such a feat was achieved was in 2020/21 before injuries claimed his fluency.

He had scored ten from ten at that stage, with his performances leading talent scout Jacek Kulig to state that “Carlo Ancelotti created a monster”.

Last year was spent getting back on track, but Calvert-Lewin has been poor in recent games and must now be dropped. When comparing the striker’s metrics against his own from last year, it can be seen that Calvert-Lewin has missed a shocking 23 big chances in the Premier League since the start of last season, despite only scoring nine goals in the same timeframe.

Moreover, the 6 foot 3 sensation has been caught offside 16 times in the Premier League this year, five times more than any other player.

His fitness levels have been brilliant this season, unfaltering in his persistence to start and serve as a focal point, but the number nine has not posted a goal contribution since Everton escaped their dismal start to the campaign, and perhaps now should be dropped.

Broja may not be ready, but Everton have the perfect alternative to step into the starting line-up. Beto, indeed, deserves a shot.

Beto could send Lopetegui packing

Beto has lifted his form and then some in recent weeks, scoring the last-gasp equaliser against Fulham two weeks back before rattling the crossbar and scoring a marginally offside goal either side of Adam Armstrong’s winner at St. Mary’s one week ago.

The Portugal-born forward has left plenty to be desired since signing from Udinese in a deal worth £25m, for sure, but he’s showing tentative signs of finding his feet and should now be handed his first Premier League starting berth of the season.

Despite having played infrequently for Everton this term the Guinea-Bissau international has won 1.2 aerial battles per game, as per Sofascore, which also stands at a 64% success rate.

Southampton scored a big win over Everton last time out. It reminded the Blues faithful that this will be a season of fighting, ups and downs both, and that Dyche will need to call upon the many members of his squad to ensure success in preserving top-flight status.

He’d be the first to admit that he hasn’t been up to scratch in Merseyside, scoring just four times in the Premier League across 36 appearances, but there’s no question about the muscular physique and commanding style that makes him the perfect fit for an important role under Dyche’s wing.

Once hailed for his “Lukaku-esque” qualities by the earlier-mentioned Kulig, he does show properties that emulate a one-time iteration of striker Romelu Lukaku, blessed with pace that could be utilised against the West Ham backline.

Calvert-Lewin might be caught offside with frustrating regularity, but Beto has the wheels to open up a new dimension for Dyche’s outfit, something that the likes of Dwight McNeil could feast upon in east London, threading passes through and stretching lines, concurrently allowing Iliman Ndiaye to overlap down the left.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Beto is starting to find his feet. He might not have got his name on the score sheet last time but he harnessed that confident energy that had been created through a well-worked goal against Fulham.

Dyche might prefer Calvert-Lewin as his starting option, but he’s not doing enough right now and Beto should be unleashed from the outset to ensure that Everton secure three points and perhaps leave the London Stadium having sentenced Lopetegui to the swing of the axe.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Ronaldo has recently declared himself the greatest player of all-time ahead of other legends to have graced the game such as Lionel Messi, Diego Maradona and Pele. The Portuguese superstar has won countless titles with Manchester United and Real Madrid as well as lifting a European Championship with Portugal. He's also banged in 925 goals during an incredibly prolific career and is still going strong at the age of 40 with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ronaldo's GOAT claim has, unsurprisingly, generated plenty of debate already. Inter Miami boss Javier Mascherano has disagreed along with Lionel Messi's Argentina team-mate Nahuel Molina. Former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has also shared his thoughts and feels Ronaldo Nazario is the best the world has seen. The Brazilian legend has now been asked what he thinks of Ronaldo's GOAT claim and named the players he thinks are the best in history.

  • WHAT RONALDO SAID

He told : "I don't really like to get into this, I think people have too much self-esteem. I prefer people to talk about what I did and who I was rather than talking about myself. Cristiano Ronaldo has a fantastic story, he won everything, scored goals in every possible way. He is definitely among the best in history. Now, I don't agree with the best. But I respect his opinion… I would say he is easily in the top 10.

"Pelé number 1 without a doubt, Messi and Maradona tied together, Zico, Romário, Cristiano Ronaldo, [Marco] Van Basten, [Zinedine] Zidane, [Luis] Figo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho Gaúcho, a series of players, there are many great players on this list, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some. Every time someone asks me about this ranking, I make a different list. Only these first three are definitive."

    WHAT NEXT FOR RONALDO

Ronaldo's comments are unlikely to go down too well with his Portuguese namesake, who continues to hunt for trophies in Saudi Arabia despite being in the twilight of his career. However, Ronaldo is yet to win silverware with Al-Nassr and a league title is looking difficult again this season. Ronaldo's team are currently eight points behind leaders Al-Ittihad and have played one game more.

Cameron Green the 'complete package' at Test level – Pat Cummins

Australia captain Pat Cummins believes Cameron Green is the complete package and as good as any current Test allrounder in the world after his match-winning efforts in the fifth Test in Hobart.Green, 22, turned the game on the third evening with a blistering spell to spark a massive collapse after England had reached 0 for 68 chasing 271 to win.Green took three wickets in a six-over burst either side of the evening break. His extra pace forced Rory Burns to chop on to halt England’s momentum. He hit Dawid Malan flush on the helmet with 138kph/86mph bumper that rocked England’s No. 3.Malan, having already survived a couple of near chop-ons and several plays and misses, then dragged another back-of-a-length ball on to his stumps, before Green found Zak Crawley’s outside edge with some late away movement to leave England reeling. They lost 10 for 56 to lose by 146 runs and hand Australia a 4-0 series triumph.Related

Coming on the back of his critical 74 with the bat in the first innings, Cummins was in awe of Green’s ability.”He’s just as good as any allrounder in the world at the moment I think,” Cummins said. “For someone so young, as a captain, I feel really lucky not only to draw on him as a bowler but when he’s next into bat I just feel so calm.”He showed he absolutely belongs at this level is a Test batter and then as a bowler, he’s a genuine fourth quick.”I feel like I turned to him sometimes before I turned to myself or someone else. He’s just got that bounce, he’s got the control, incredible skills, and he’s been so bowling so well, we’ve only had to bowl him 10 or 15 overs a day or an innings. Again, you forget how young he is, just seeing him at gully as well.”He is absolutely the complete package. But he’s young, so we’ve got to keep looking after him. But a bright future ahead.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Green finished the series with 273 runs at 32.57 including two half-centuries, and 13 wickets at 15.76, emphatically silencing any doubt about his place in Australia’s Test side.”He had so much leeway, not only because of his bowling but he’s scored a lot of runs in Shield cricket consistently over the last couple of years,” Cummins said.”He’s played some big innings. Internally we weren’t worried at all about how he was going. I think in himself being so young, I think he needed to grow and believe and I think you saw that last week particularly.”Cummins himself grew into the Test captaincy across the series. Any queries on how the leadership would affect his bowling were quashed as he finished the series as the leading wicket-taker on both sides despite only playing four Tests with 21 scalps at 18.04, bookended by a five-wicket haul in the first innings of the series and seven wickets in the final Test in Hobart.”That was probably my biggest worry in accepting the role as captain,” Cummins said.”I’m in the team as a bowler. I want to make sure that’s protected and I’m able to perform as well as I’d like. I think with each game I felt better at managing that. I could really switch off, take off the captain’s hat and just be a bowler for my overs.”Even little things around bowling changes, moving fields in between my overs I felt like I got better at managing that as the series went on and so that’s a hugely pleasing thing. Again, it might be difficult in the heat or longer innings, but I feel like it’s something I’m only going to get better at.”

PSL 2022 blueprint: separate bio-bubbles, regular tests, dedicated hospital passages

Contingency plans include resetting bubbles from scratch if there is a Covid-19 outbreak; no window later in year if tournament stalled

The PCB is set to host another season of the Pakistan Super League during the Covid-19 pandemic, with the first 15 games to be played in Karachi from January 27, and the remaining matches scheduled in Lahore, including the final on February 27. There are provisions in place to avoid a postponement even if a handful of players contract Covid-19 – the franchises have 20 players on their roster, with an additional pool of reserve players to provide cover in case of an outbreak.ESPNcricinfo has obtained PSL’s Covid-19 protocol document, which details how the PCB will form its bio-bubble environment. The document broadly covers health and safety protocols that are being put in place at venues, and has a step-by-step guide to every stage of the tournament. What will the PSL’s bio-secure bubble look like?
This season the PCB has replicated the biosecure bubble that was created by Restrata, an independent company that managed the environment during the rescheduled Abu Dhabi leg last season. The PCB will regulate the bubble itself, forming three distinct bubbles with different protocols. The main bubble will comprise all teams, support staff, match officials, hotel staff and certain PCB officials. Vehicle drivers, close protection security staff, reserve players, bubble-integrity managers, anti-corruption officials and hotel staff will all reside within the bubble and are not allowed to leave. As per the guidelines, each franchise will be allotted rooms on a separate floor of the hotel and maximum possible efforts will be made to avoid interaction between teams at the hotel. The second bubble will be created in a separate hotel and will include the TV production crew, key event management staff and essential hotel staff and drivers. The third bubble will comprise of groundstaff, who will be housed in dedicated biosecure accommodation.Vigilance will be more stringent for the primary bubble. The bubbles cannot interact with each other and every individual will be required to follow general health and safety guidelines, as well as specific protocols to maintain the integrity of the bubble. How often are teams going to be tested for Covid-19?
There will be as many as 17 tests starting on January 20 – the day teams are checking into the hotel. There is a mandatory three-day quarantine, followed by four days of training, before the tournament starts from January 27 in Karachi. The first three days of quarantine will have regular testing before everyone with two negative PCR results is allowed to enter the bubble. Every individual will then have a PCR test every second day. What if an individual requires hospital treatment for an injury or illness?
The PCB has designated Agha Khan Hospital in Karachi and Hameed Latif Hospital in Lahore to handle all potential medical requirements of individuals involved in the PSL.A medical passage will be established through which individuals requiring hospital visits for scans and/or consultations will be moved with minimal contact with others. Individuals will be provided a dedicated treatment room, sanitised passageways, PPE suits for all medical staff and will be taken around in a dedicated vehicle. What happens in case of a positive test?
The individual(s) will be immediately separated from the rest of the squad and undergo a PCR test. All close contacts (those who have had an interaction of longer than 15 minutes from less than two metres away in the previous 48 hours) will be isolated and tested. All casual contacts will also be isolated and tested immediately.Once the case is confirmed as positive, the individual will isolate for a minimum of seven days and self-monitor their symptoms, providing updates to the Bio-bubble integrity manager. On day seven, if the individual is asymptomatic, they will have to undergo a Rapid Antigen Test and on returning a negative result, can be re-integrated into their bubble. If symptoms persist on day seven, the isolation will continue till day 10. If the individual is asymptomatic on that day, there will be no need for an exit test to rejoin the bubble. What happens if protocols and guidelines are breached?
With every team there will be a bio-bubble integrity manager policing the bubble. The offender may face a sanction ranging from reprimand to expulsion from the league. Penalties can be levied for minor or major breaches, from game bans to match-fee fines. The PCB can require any participant to quarantine in their hotel room in case of a breach, and undergo repeated testing. How many fans will be permitted?
The PCB had originally announced full crowds for both the Karachi and Lahore legs. However, Pakistan’s National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) determines regulations surrounding Covid-19 restrictions, and with cases rising steeply in Pakistan over the past few weeks – particularly in Karachi – the NCOC announced that the Karachi leg would see a maximum of 25% crowd attendance. Lahore, for now, is still set to see full crowds. Spectators’ entry is subject to Covid-19 protocols – no one will be allowed to enter the venue without a valid vaccination certificate. What is the PCB’s contingency plan for a Covid outbreak?
Each of the last two seasons, the PSL was played over two legs due to Covid outbreaks, but this season, the PCB has made contingency plans to try and ensure the PSL isn’t postponed or cancelled. The PSL management will instead reset the bubble and start over after seven days, recreating the bio-bubble from scratch. In case of outbreaks among franchises, matches can go ahead as long as there are 13 players available on each side. There will also be a reserve pool for franchises to pick players from. A PCB official confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that if the league were to be postponed for some reason, it would have to be cancelled altogether, since there will be no window to play the remaining games.Could the entirety of the PSL be held in one city?
It would appear unlikely at present. ESPNcricinfo understands that all bookings and hotel confirmations have been finalised in both Karachi and Lahore, and there are at present no plans to change that.

Emery must sell £26m Villa man who has seen an 86% drop in value

Unai Emery’s transfer business during his time in charge of Aston Villa has been excellent. Not only has he moved on players such as Moussa Diaby and Douglas Luiz for lavish fees, but he has brought in players who have wonderful futures in the game.

It marks a change from the recruitment that had occurred under previous manager Steven Gerrard, with several players failing to live up to their hype.

Steven Gerrard’s recruitment at Aston Villa

The former Rangers manager took charge in November 2021, tasked with leading Villa to the European spots. Gerrard made a few decent signings during the January 2022 transfer window, bringing in players such as Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne, who made solid impacts.

That summer, Coutinho’s loan deal was made permanent, before the likes of Robin Olsen, Leander Dendoncker, and Diego Carlos were signed ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Ex-Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard.

Out of these players, only Carlos is still featuring for the first team, but what once looked like an impressive signing has potentially turned into a financial mistake…

How much Aston Villa spent on Diego Carlos

The Brazilian defender cost the club £26m in 2022, but he suffered a serious injury on his first Premier League start for Villa, ruling him out for the majority of his debut season.

He returned to full fitness last term, making 38 appearances in all competitions, yet Carlos has fallen down the pecking order this season, starting just seven times in all competitions under Emery.

The £100k-per-week defender has struggled in the Premier League. Across four games in the top flight, the centre-back has won just 1.3 total duels per game – a success rate of 31% – while losing possession six times per game and making only 0.5 tackles each game.

Hardly the statistics of a player at the top of their game. Will Emery consider his future when the January transfer window rolls around in a couple of months? Especially as he can call on several other players who appear to be favoured in his position.

These performances haven’t exactly done wonders for his current market value since joining the Midlands side, as it has dipped drastically over the previous two years…

Diego Carlos’ current market value at Aston Villa

Spending £26m on a player when the club had no European income was a risky piece of business and, in this regard, it has not paid off.

Indeed, according to Football Transfers, Carlos is currently valued at just €4.5m (£3.7m), clearly representing a massive drop from the fee Gerrard spent to secure his signature.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

Emery must now ruthlessly ditch him from the squad in January, although Villa may have to take a huge loss on the defender, as his current market value does not suggest that any team is likely to spend £26m on him now.

This works out as a staggering 86% decrease from the original £26m fee in just over two years, proving that it hasn’t been the best piece of transfer business conducted by the club in recent years.

19x possession lost: Dyche must boldly drop Everton star who lost 9 duels

That’s one defeat in eight Premier League games for Everton now. Great stuff. Unfortunately, though, Sean Dyche’s side played out their second successive 0-0, with Brentford standing firm despite being reduced to ten before half-time.

Everton have only won two matches in that timeframe too, which is pretty concerning given that the ostensibly toughest part of the season so far lies ahead.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford complaining

The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland summed it up neatly, saying upon the final whistle: “Big missed opportunity and never really looked like winning it.”

It’s not the end of the world; Everton are currently four points clear of the drop zone. Even so, much work to do. Iliman Ndiaye was great though – he’s taking talismanic shape for the Merseysiders.

Iliman Ndiaye is the shining light once again

Everton signed Ndiaye from Marseille this summer for a £15m fee, and he’s been brilliant in blue. Three goals to his name so far, the winger brings the kind of electric skillset that sends frissons of excitement rippling across the stadium.

Everton's Iliman Ndiaye

He was Goodison Park’s most destructive force on Saturday, proving to be an unrelenting carrier of the ball while also getting stuck in and looking to win back possession and disrupt Brentford’s flow.

As you will see from the table below, Ndiaye was in the thick of the action with 58 touches, while also excelling with his dribbling (completing all four attempts) and winning six of his seven contested ground duels, which gives rise to the solidity that Dyche demands from every ara of the pitch.

Before the match, Dyche was quizzed on whether he’d be interested in playing Ndiaye at number ten, with the Senegal star viewed with properties to succeed in such a role.

His response: “In the Premier League, playing as a number 10 is a very defensive-minded role, now.”

That’s all well and good, but can he use that same justification when looking at Dwight McNeil, whose defensive issues might be knocking Everton’s fluency off-kilter?

Why Dyche could boldly drop Dwight McNeil

McNeil is obviously a fantastic player and one of Everton’s chief attacking threats, but there’s a compelling case to be made that his role at number ten is inhibiting the overall fluency of Dyche’s side.

He’s had finer days, let’s put it that way. Wasteful on the ball and flimsy in the duel – having squandered possession on 19 occasions and lost nine duels in all – McNeil will need to bring more of an all-encompassing sheen to his displays if he is going to improve Everton’s overall level of performance.

Make no mistake, he’s an excellent player and must continue to play a prominent role across the duration of the campaign, but can Dyche run the line that number ten is a position with new defensive layers if McNeil fails to uphold such tactical virtues?

Dwight McNeil for Everton

With Ndiaye virtually undroppable on the left flank, perhaps it’s time to shuffle the pack and restore some of the midfield industriousness.

Football is a game of 11 parts, and it might prove to be a shrewd move next weekend, with Everton up against Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United.

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has become a staple in the footballing calendar since its inception in the 1950s.

First held in 1957 with just three sides, it has evolved to become the major footballing tournament in Africa, and is now held every two years in various countries across the continent.

Ivory Coast are the current holders, having beaten Nigeria in the final of the 2023 competition thanks to a late winner from Sebastien Haller.

In doing so, the Elephants became just the third side in the competition’s history to lift the trophy on home soil, after a run in the competition that had also seen them thrashed 4-0 in the group stages and sack head coach Jean-Louis Gasset.

But despite their success, they remain a fair way down the list when it comes to the most successful teams in the tournament. With the qualifiers finalised for the upcoming edition in December 2025, we’ve taken a look at just who those are.

AFCON: Who are the last 10 winners of the Africa Cup of Nations?

FFC looks in detail at the last 10 teams to win the Africa Cup of Nations and exactly how they did it.

ByJamie Rooke Feb 12, 2024 8 8 teams (1 title each) Senegal are the most recent first-time winners (2021)

With the final tournament having been contested by just 16 sides until 2019, it is a truly impressive feat that eight different nations have managed to get their hands on the trophy once.

However, all of Senegal (2021), Zambia (2012), Tunisia (2004), South Africa (1996), Morocco (1976), Congo (1972), Sudan (1970) and Ethiopia (1962) are able to say that is precisely what they have done.

Of those, Morocco’s sole win – from topping a round-robin in 1976 – is perhaps the most surprising given their recent footballing heritage, while Senegal have made the most of a golden generation of talent with the likes of Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly and Sadio Mané all part of the squad that lifted the trophy in early 2022.

However, all eight continue to look for that elusive second AFCON title, with none of those sides making it past the last 16 of the competition in its most recent iteration – but six now qualified for the 2025 tournament.

7 DR Congo 2 titles (1968, 1974)

A relatively surprising entry on the list is DR Congo, who have won the Africa Cup of Nations on two occasions.

Les Léopards lifted the trophy in 1968, beating Ghana 1-0 in the final of the eight-team tournament as Pierre Kalala wrote his name into the history books with the only goal.

They were knocked out in the semi-finals of the 1972 edition, but clinched their second title two years later while known as Zaire, beating Zambia. The final ended in a 2-2 draw after extra time, which prompted a replay that they won 2-0. Across both games, Pierre Ndaye Mulamba scored all four of his country’s goals, finishing as the top scorer in the competition with nine goals.

DR Congo have not tasted success since, and finished fourth in the most recent Africa Cup of Nations by knocking out Egypt before narrowly falling at the semi-final hurdle to eventual winners Ivory Coast thanks to a goal from Sebastien Haller.

Now qualified for the 2025 tournament, they will be hoping to add a third title to their trophy cabinet.

6 Algeria 2 titles (1990,2019)

Algeria are regulars at the Africa Cup of Nations, but have only made the final on three occasions. They struggled to qualify for much of their early history, before finishing runners-up in 1980, losing to Nigeria in the final.

It took another decade for them to return to a final, but they were more successful at the second time of asking. Qualifying automatically as hosts, Les Fennecs didn’t lose a game on their way to the final, before getting revenge on Nigeria with a 1-0 win in the final to lift the trophy on home soil for the first time.

For the next 27 years, they made it past the last 16 on just one occasion, but Algeria produced another astonishing unbeaten run in 2019 with a final win over Senegal to win their second and most recent AFCON as Baghdad Bounedjah scored the only goal of the game.

They will be hoping they don’t have to wait as long again for their third success, with their ticket to the 2025 tournament secured.

The 9 most successful teams in the FA Cup

The FA Cup has been won by some of the biggest teams in the country since its inception in the 19th century.

ByRoss Kilvington Oct 30, 2024 5 Nigeria 3 titles (1980, 1994, 2013)

No other team has been around the final four of the competition as regularly as Nigeria, with the Super Eagles the unfortunate side to have lost in the final most often.

They have finished third on eight occasions, most recently in 2019, and their second-placed finish in 2023 was their fifth in the history of the competition.

However, they have also managed to hold their nerve in the final on three occasions. Beating Algeria in 1980, they then endured a series of near-misses for 14 years until they again lifted the trophy, this time with a 2-1 win over Zambia in the 1994 final.

Their most recent success came in 2013, as they met Burkina Faso in the final, having drawn against each other in the group stages.

This time, the Super Eagles made no mistake, edging past their opponents 1-0 to claim their third AFCON success, though they failed to qualify for the competition to defend it in 2015.

A powerhouse in African football and heading to Morocco for 2025, history suggests that they will be there or thereabouts once more.

4 Ivory Coast 3 titles (1992, 2015, 2023)

Given the legendary players at their disposal, it is perhaps a shock to see Ivory Coast so low on this list.

The likes of Didier Drogba, Yaya and Kolo Toure, Solomon Kalou and Gervinho all boast Premier League experience, and they helped Ivory Coast lift the trophy in 2015 as they beat Ghana in a tense penalty shootout.

But that was just their second competition win; their first came back in 1992 on their ninth attempt, with the previous eight having seen them finish no higher than third.

Their most recent success leaves them as the team to beat in the 2025 competition, and with a host of household names still littering their squad, the Elephants will be a force to be reckoned with.

The top 12 European Championship goalscorers of all time

With the Euros now upon us, here’s who leads the way as the tournament’s all-time top scorer.

ByBrogan Clasper Jun 11, 2024 3 Ghana 4 titles (1963, 1965, 1978, 1982)

Ghana are next on the list, with their successes coming in short, sharp bursts. The Black Stars won the first two competitions they qualified for in 1963 and 1965 (when only three games were needed to establish a winner), while they were runners-up in the following two tournaments.

In a bizarre turn, they did not qualify for the next three editions, before returning with a bang in 1978 with another title and following that up with their fourth in 1982, beating Libya on penalties.

Since then, they have only flirted with success, finishing as runners-up on three occasions, including most recently in 2015 when they lost to the Ivory Coast on penalties.

In a shock turn of events, they failed to qualify for the 2025 competition, missing out on the final tournament for the first time since 2004.

2 Cameroon 5 titles (1984, 1988, 2000, 2002, 2017)

You cannot discuss Africa Cup of Nations successes without mentioning Cameroon. The Indomitable Lions have lifted the trophy on five occasions and, in Samuel Eto’o, boast the competition’s all-time top goalscorer, with the former Barcelona man having found the net 18 times.

His goals helped Cameroon to their tournament wins in 2000 and 2002, scoring five across the two competitions.

Those successes came 12 years after Cameroon had last lifted the trophy, with the African giants reaching the final in three successive tournaments between 1984 and 1988.

It has been a fallow period by their own standards since, with Eto’o’s nation only lifting the trophy once in two decades, with their most recent success coming in 2017 as they beat Egypt to secure their fifth AFCON title.

Every Player of the Tournament at the European Championship

Since its inception in 1996, UEFA has handed out an award for the best player at the European Championship. But who has been given the accolade?

ByStephan Georgiou Jul 16, 2024 1 Egypt 7 titles (1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008, 2010)

Undisputedly the most successful side in the history of the tournament, Egypt admittedly had an early advantage.

The Pharaohs won each of the first two tournaments, which consisted of just three teams. This was followed by a run of six consecutive semi-final exits for tournaments they had qualified for.

It meant that their next success didn’t come until 1986, beating Cameroon on penalties, and it took another 12 years to follow that up with a fourth competition win, this time a more comfortable 2-0 victory over South Africa.

It was in the early 2000s that Egypt truly emerged as the powerhouse of African football, though, winning three successive tournaments between 2006 and 2010 – becoming the only side in the history of the competition to have managed such a reign of success and doing so without conceding a goal in any of the three finals.

14 years have now passed since their last success, but with Mohamed Salah ready to lead the line once more into the 2025 edition, they remain a side more than capable of lifting a ninth title at the next tournament.
