Arsenal: "Special" Star Ready To Quit This Summer

Arsenal forward Folarin Balogun is readying an exit push this summer as Champions League finalists Inter Milan plot to sign him, according to reports out of Italy.

Who leave Arsenal?

It's been a seismic window of transfer activity at the Emirates Stadium, with Mikel Arteta's side completed a trio of marquee deals for Germany winger Kai Havertz, star midfielder Declan Rice and versatile defender Jurrien Timber.

Havertz put pen to paper on a £65 million move from Chelsea, while their biggest move of the summer comes in the form of Rice, who signed from West Ham in a club-record £105 million deal.

“We’re really happy that Declan is joining us," said Arteta after his arrival.

"He is a player with tremendous ability, who has been performing at a high level in the Premier League and for England for a number of seasons now. Declan is bringing undoubted quality to the club and he is an exceptional talent who has the potential to be very successful here.

“Declan has great experience in the Premier League at only 24 years old. He has captained a very good West Ham team and as we all saw, he recently lifted a European trophy. The responsibility and role he has taken on has been very impressive and we are really excited that he is joining us.”

Timber's signing from Ajax also represents a significant coup for Arteta, but to balance the books, certain players simply must make way.

Of the players to be linked with a move away from north London is Balogun, with reports suggesting that Arsenal have put a £50 million price tag on his head after an exceptional season at Reims on loan last year.

A report by Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via Sport Witness, has an update on his situation.

They say that Balogun is "ready to push" for an exit this summer, coming as Serie A giants Inter Milan put him top of their list of transfer targets.

It is believed Balogun's asking price has reduced to just over €40 million (£34m), but that is still a figure the Nerazzurri are unwilling to pay as things stand.

As a result, they plan to exploit the 22-year-old's desire to leave, coming after he's started training on his own and sat out of a friendly against Manchester United.

How good is Folarin Balogun?

The attacker's stock has risen exponentially since the start of last season, with Balogun scoring a brilliant 21 goals in 37 Ligue 1 appearances last season (WhoScored).

To add fuel to the fire, Arteta has raved over Balogun's quality and desire as well.

“He’s a boy that has a really clear idea of what he wants to do with his career," said Arteta.

"He’s really ambitious, really committed and really brave. We discussed a lot before he made that move whether it was the right place to go and the other choices he had. He was so convinced. I’m really happy for him because he deserves what he’s getting.

“When you look at the numbers and what he is doing, it’s just incredible. It’s very rare to see that. But he’s got something special."

Steketee, Webster named in Cricket Australia XI

The Cricket Australia XI squad for this year’s domestic one-day tournament, the JLT Cup, has been named, with Queensland fast bowler Mark Steketee and Tasmania allrounder Beau Webster the most experienced members of the squad

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Sep-2017The Cricket Australia XI squad for this year’s domestic one-day tournament, the JLT Cup, has been named, with Queensland fast bowler Mark Steketee and Tasmania allrounder Beau Webster the most experienced members of the squad. Victoria allrounder Jonathan Merlo is the only player in the squad without a state contract.”There is some real talent within this group, and we believe the players in this squad will benefit enormously from the opportunity to compete against the best players in Australia,” Greg Chappell, Cricket Australia’s national talent manager, said.”This is now the third year of the Cricket Australia XI competing in our domestic one-day competition. It’s great to see seven players who represented the CA XI last year feature in state squads this year – Western Australia’s Will Bosisto and Josh Inglis, Victoria’s Sam Harper and Matt Short, New South Wales’ Ryan Gibson and Arjun Nair, and Queensland’s Brendan Doggett.”We will look to use multiple captains, and give some of our emerging leaders experience in that area as well. It’s great to have three Under 19s players in this squad in Jonathan Merlo, Max Bryant and Param Uppal, they’re all exciting young cricketers. They are all primarily batsmen, but also provide us with additional bowling options.”Henry Thornton is coming back from some injury issues, and he’s a very exciting prospect. He has been clocked bowling at similar speeds to Brett Lee at the same age. Daniel Fallins is an exciting leg-spinner, he’s up there on the rev counter with the elite wrist spinners – he gives it a real tweak, not unlike Stuart MacGill.”The Cricket Australia opens the tournament against South Australia in Brisbane on Wednesday next week. In two previous years of competing in the state one-day competition, the CA XI – made up of emerging cricketers who failed to win selection in their respective state squads for the tournament – have won only one of their 12 games, a three-run victory over Tasmania in 2015.Cricket Australia XI Max Bryant (Qld), Jake Carder (WA), Jackson Coleman (Vic), Daniel Fallins (NSW), David Grant (SA), Clint Hinchliffe (WA), Jonathan Merlo (Vic), Harry Nielsen (SA), Ben Pengelley (SA), Mark Steketee (Qld), Henry Thornton (NSW), Param Uppal (NSW), Beau Webster (Tas), Mac Wright (Tas).

10 Wonderkids Lionel Messi Tipped for Success in 2015

Lionel Messi is one of the greatest players of all time. That is an undisputable football fact. And, you'd think that certain abilities come with that.

There's an assumption that the greatest players can make the best coaches, or can have the best eye for spotting talent. Based on Messi's 2015 predictions, however, it's safe to say that, unless anything has dramatically changed in the last few years, the Barcelona legend will not be transitioning into a scout when it's time to call it a day on the pitch.

With that said, we've taken a look at the 10 players that the forward tipped for success in Adidas' 'Backed by Messi' campaign, and just where their careers have gone since.

11

Khiry Shelton

You'd be forgiven for not knowing who Khiry Shelton is, but it seems as though Messi knew the name well in 2015, tipping the then-New York City star for success.

Backed by one of football's greats, Shelton had the chance to prove Messi right, but the backing was more of a curse than anything else, as the American failed to reach his potential.

Attempting to get his career back on track in America by swapping New York for Sporting Kansas City, Shelton never really got going, even when attempting to succeed in Germany at SC Paderborn.

10

Gyasi Zardes

This one came as less of a surprise. Gyasi Zardes was the main man at LA Galaxy at the time. Things slowly fizzled out for the American, however, as the chances of a move to Europe grew slimmer and slimmer, resulting in an MLS stay.

If you were to look at Zardes' career from an MLS perspective alone, then you'd say that he did realise his potential, having played for the likes LA Galaxy, Columbus Crew, and his current club Austin FC. But we can't help but think about what could have been when it comes to a move into European football.

9

James Wilson

Messi has gone three for three here in naming players who have ultimately failed to live up to expectations, further hammering home that his backing must have been more of a curse than a blessing.

James Wilson graduated from the Manchester United academy, and things never really got going from there, with failed loan spells stopping his career in its tracks completely.

As of right now, the man that Messi tipped for great things is without a club at the age of 27.

8

Rony Lopes

At one point, it looked as though Rony Lopes would become the player that Messi believed he could turn into, after leaving Manchester City to reignite his career at AS Monaco, where he scored 15 goals in the 2017/18 season.

Making the move to Sevilla just a year later, however, Lopes has not been able to find the same form since, playing a bit-part role in La Liga, and being sent out on loan on more than one occasion.

7

Timo Werner

Messi can't be blamed for jumping on the Timo Werner hype train in 2015. After all, the German was one of the standout players in the Bundesliga for RB Leipzig at the time. The only way was up.

One disastrous move to Chelsea later, though, and Werner has seen his career return to square one at Leipzig, where he regained some form, scoring 16 goals last season.

At 27, the forward still has time to prove Messi right.

6

Aleksei Miranchuk

Messi's predictions were well-rounded, we'll give him that, opting to back Aleksei Miranchuk who was at Lokomotiv Moscow at the time. Alas, like many on this list, Miranchuk is yet to live up to his potential.

Since moving to Serie A side Atalanta, the midfielder's career has stalled, with a loan move to Torino only showing glimpses of what he is capable of last season.

It remains to be seen whether he can establish himself in the Atalanta side.

5

Maxwel Cornet

Maxwel-Cornet

Maxwel Cornet is an interesting one, because the winger has shown signs that he has the ability to perform at the top level throughout his career. The problem just seems to be consistency.

At Lyon when Messi backed him for great things, Cornet's later move to Burnley was a success, even as the Clarets went down.

Since swapping Burnley for West Ham United, though, he has struggled to reach the expected heights.

4

Kenedy

3

Kenedy wasn't the first young player to struggle at Chelsea, and he certainly won't be the last. The winger never really broke into the side at Stamford Bridge, despite being tipped for great things, making just 30 appearances for the Blues.

Loan moves didn't help, either, and he now plies his trade in Spain for Real Valladolid.

2

Accuriso Bentivegna

Even with Paulo Dybala next to Accuriso Bentivegna, Messi backed the forward. As it turns out, however, the World Cup winner backed the losing horse.

Bentivegna, eight years later, now plays for Juve Stabia, having failed to live up to his potential in the Palermo first-team, and eventually ending up in Serie C.

Blast attendances up to record 883,000

This season’s NatWest Blast has set new records for ticket sales, with official attendance rising to 883,000 overall. Finals Day at Edgbaston is also a record sellout, while average attendances among the 18 counties were up to 7500.The return of the competition to a block in July and August – as well as soaring run rates – seems to have helped the Blast’s growth, despite poor weather causing 16 matches to be abandoned. Taking into account those through the turnstiles to watch the Kia Super League, 907,000 tickets had been sold for domestic T20, before the women’s Finals Day at Hove on Friday. The 2017 Blast figures were a 7% rise on the previous record, set in 2015 when the competition was played largely on Friday nights from May through to August. Last year saw a slight drop in attendances, partly down to poor weather.”It’s a genuine pleasure to be able to congratulate all 18 first-class counties for their outstanding efforts in making the 2017 Blast such a hit,” Gordon Hollins, the ECB’s chief operating officer, said.”The competition moved to a new place in the schedule this year, with all games played in a block in July and August rather than spread through the summer. That was welcomed by the players and has helped draw the crowds to NatWest T20 Blast – in bigger numbers then ever before.”The change created some fresh challenges for counties alongside the new opportunities but the record advance sales show how well the game has responded – the counties deserve huge credit. The quality of the cricket has been very clear too, with further records set for runs scored and sixes hit – our thanks to the players for producing such entertaining games.Blast Finals Day, in front of 24,426 people at Edgbaston on Saturday, will see Hampshire, Glamorgan, Nottinghamshire and Birmingham compete to the lift the trophy. From 2020, the ECB is set to introduce a new, 38-game T20 tournament, featuring eight regional/city-based team. The NatWest Blast is planned to continue as a secondary competition for all 18 counties to contest.

We were upset after Hales' catch decision – Christian

Dan Christian applauded his bowlers for backing up his gamble of giving Somerset first chance to bat despite Trent Bridge’s reputation for yielding high scores

Nottinghamshire captain Dan Christian applauded his bowlers for backing up his gamble of giving Somerset first chance to bat despite Trent Bridge’s reputation for yielding high scores in this year’s Twenty20 Blast.”Knowing Somerset hadn’t played here before, we figured they might not know what a good total might be on this pitch,” he said.”It was a touch slower than it has been this season, although still probably a 190-kind of wicket, but we bowled brilliantly throughout.”If someone gets going here, with the good pitches and the short boundaries, it can be hard to stop them, but we bowled brilliantly throughout, Jake [Ball] at the top and Samit [Patel] in the middle in particular. There weren’t really any loose overs and they couldn’t build the big partnership they needed.”So we were pretty confident after how well we bowled and we have chased 220 here before and even after we lost early wickets we knew we had depth in the shed.”Christian admitted the controversy over Alex Hales’ dismissal upset the Notts dressing room and momentarily disturbed their equilibrium on the field.”It was pretty obvious from the reaction in the crowd what everyone on the ground thought,” he said. “We will have to look at it again and ask the third umpire what his reasoning was but from our perspective it didn’t quite carry.”There was a period of about 10 minutes when everyone needed to calm down. Everyone in the changing room was pretty upset with it and Alex was pretty upset too when he came back in.”It needed things to calm down a bit but we knew we had time to gather ourselves and get going again.”Somerset’s Steven Davies, who top scored with 59, said he trusted the officials to have reached the right decision over the Hales dismissal.”Pete was convinced he got his fingers under it and we can only go by that,” he said. “The television cameras are here and I’m sure they got it right.”Pete has copped some abuse from the crowd and on Twitter but he’s pretty used to that. It doesn’t bother him too much.”He suspected the pitch did not play as well as either side expected.”It looked nice but I think the signs were there when I got hit in the glove in Harry Gurney’s first over. The slower balls were difficult to get away.”But they are a top side with international class bowlers and although we are disappointed to have lost the game we scrapped really well in the field and we were in with a shot and it took a couple of good innings to win the game for them.”

Spurs Could Land £70m "Monster" Who Is "Similar" To Kane

Tottenham Hotspur are set to kick off the new Premier League campaign away to Brentford next week, with supporters likely to be nervously awaiting the start of the Ange Postecoglou regime in the hope of improving upon last season's limp, eighth-place finish.

With not long to wait until that opening weekend clash with the Bees, it remains to be seen if the newly-appointed Spurs boss will have free-scoring talisman, Harry Kane, to call upon through the middle, with the 30-year-old's future at the club still yet to be resolved.

Although the England skipper may be willing to stay put if a deal is not agreed before that meeting with Thomas Frank's men, it would appear that leading suitors Bayern Munich are still hopeful of getting their man, with the Bundesliga giants ready to up their most recent £81.7m offer – according to Sky Sports.

If that eagerly anticipated move to Bavaria does come to pass, the Lilywhites will then have limited time to try and acquire a replacement for the 280-goal machine, with a new, leading number nine set to be needed.

Who will replace Kane at Tottenham?

According to various reports, one name that has been mentioned is Juventus sensation, Dusan Vlahovic, with the 23-year-old – who has also been linked with a move to Chelsea – set to command a fee of around £70m if he is to leave the Old Lady this summer.

While there have been suggestions that the north Londoners will try to assemble a more 'fluid' forward line if Kane is to leave – rather than attempting to directly replace the Walthamstow-born star – Vlahovic could be among the few who have the credentials to at least attempt to fill the Englishman's void.

That is the verdict of journalist Paul Brown at least, with the respected insider even claiming that the Serbian international seemingly has "similar qualities" to the in-demand Tottenham ace.

Speaking to Football Fancast, Brown stated: "Vlahovic is an interesting one, he has similar qualities in many ways to Kane. His move hasn't entirely worked out for him and he is available in this window.

"I think he would cost quite a lot of money but he looks like someone who you know might be able to cope with the Premier League so that certainly is an interesting prospect for Spurs."

Should Tottenham sign Vlahovic?

Much like Kane – who has proven his goalscoring credentials repeatedly over the years – the former Fiorentina man is also something of a "monster" in front of goal, as per his former Partizan coach, Zarko Lazetic, having netted 49 goals in just 108 games for his previous employers.

Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic.

Despite not being able to match those heroics in Turin, the Belgrade native still boasts a respectable haul of 23 goals in 63 games in all competitions for his current side, having been tipped to be "a generational talent" by writer Emmet Gates.

Also like Kane – who is his country's record scorer with 58 goals in 84 caps – Vlahovic is also rather prolific on the international stage, having amassed 13 goals in only 21 appearances for Serbia to date.

It would appear then that the 6 foot 3 menace shares the current Tottenham man's knack for being a truly clinical and lethal presence in the final third, with the hope being that he would be able to hit the ground running at N17 if a deal was to be agreed.

With it yet to be seen if Postecoglou can rely on Richarlison – who scored just a solitary league goal last season – bringing in an out-and-out focal point like Vlahovic to try and fill Kane's shoes may be an ideal solution.

Arsenal: £105m Signing Impresses In Community Shield Win

It could be said that Arsenal have had the perfect summer so far, welcoming the majority of their key targets, impressing in pre-season, before gaining a crucial edge over Manchester City by winning the Community Shield. The Gunners matched the treble winners all over the pitch to stay in the game, before Leandro Trossard’s deflected strike levelled things up for Mikel Arteta’s side, cancelling out Cole Palmer’s earlier goal.Down to penalties, it was Aaron Ramsdale with the heroics, saving Rodri’s spot-kick, before Fabio Vieira had the chance to seal it for Arsenal, which he did in emphatic fashion as he found the top corner. The North London side celebrated with the passion of a side who know just how important even the tiniest of mental gains can be against this Manchester City side.Declan Rice, winning his first trophy for the club, particularly impressed throughout, even displaying a key trait which shows why Arsenal splashed out for his signature this summer.

What did Declan Rice do vs Man City?

In ruthless fashion, as shared on the official Arsenal Twitter account, Rice sprinted back a great distance to dispossess Bernardo Silva with ease, who thought he had control of the ball, before the England international came striding in to win back possession.

It’s the type of recovery that could be so important for Arsenal, who do some of their best work in transition. If they can win the ball back quickly, and suffocate sides with constant pressure, then the Gunners could become even more dominant. And Rice would be a large part of that.

The defensive foundation that Rice and Thomas Partey provide together, too, should only boost Arteta’s side going forward, too, given the freedom that the likes of Martin Odegaard would suddenly receive.

Winning the Community Shield could only be the start for Rice and his new teammates, who will be gunning for the Premier League title in the coming season.

Who joined Arsenal in 2023?

Arsenal have had quite the summer of arrivals, signing Rice, Jurrien Timber, and Kai Havertz for a reported combined €232m (£200m). All three new arrivals started for the North Londoners in their victory over Manchester City, signalling a solid start to life for all of them.

Speaking after the game, Rice was left delighted with his first trophy for his new club, saying, via BBC: “I am buzzing, this is what I visioned when I joined.

“City gave us what we expected, but I am buzzing – so happy. You have to have the patience against them, you have to have mini games within the game against them like the manager said to us before.

“I feel I’ve grown a lot in the last three weeks. There’s a lot of information to take in of what the manager wants. I’m eager to learn and keep improving.

“I’m sure we can achieve anything this season – we just need to remain focused.”

Arsenal can now turn their attention to the opening day of the Premier League season, where they will square off against Nottingham Forest. They will hope to get off to the perfect start, as they look to compete on all fronts once again in the coming campaign.

Leicester Eyeing Up Loan Swoop For 5 ft 10 Magician

An update has emerged on Leicester City and their search for further reinforcements to the playing squad before the end of the summer transfer window…

What's the latest Leicester transfer news?

According to The Telegraph's Mike McGrath, the Foxes are one of a number of clubs interested in signing Benfica winger Tiago Gouveia, as Enzo Maresca eyes up another wide option.

The respected reporter has claimed that a host of Championship sides are keen on a swoop to sign the 22-year-old magician on loan until the end of the 2023/24 season.

He has stated that fellow second-tier teams Southampton, Hull City, Watford, and West Bromwich Albion are also in the 'race' to secure his signature as the Portuguese giants potentially prepare to send him out on another temporary deal.

How good is Tiago Gouveia?

The versatile wide man, who can play on either flank, is a creative maestro who could use his ability to split open opposition defences on a regular basis to revive Jamie Vardy at the King Power Stadium.

Gouveia spent last season on loan with Estoril in the top flight of Portuguese football and caught the eye with his performances on the wing.

The 5 foot 10 ace produced five goals and six assists in 29 Liga Portugal appearances. However, his assist total does not do him justice as the talented youngster actually created 11 'big chances' and provided 41 key passes to his teammates throughout the campaign.

Only James Maddison (2.3) created more chances per game for Leicester in the Premier League last term than Gouveia (1.4) did for Estoril, although the England international – who joined Tottenham Hotspur this summer – only produced one more 'big chance' for his fellow attackers.

Leicester striker Jamie Vardy.

This suggests that the Benfica prospect, who was once hailed as a "superb" talent by scout Jacek Kulig, could be an outstanding creator for the Foxes, particularly when you consider that Maddison has moved on, and that means that he could play a vital role in reviving Vardy's goalscoring prowess.

The former England international failed to score against Coventry City on the opening day last weekend and only found the back of the net three times in 37 top-flight outings last season.

It has been a fall from grace for the veteran marksman as he had scored an impressive 13 or more Premier League goals in each of the previous seven campaigns before the 2022/23 term.

At the age of 36, Vardy may have fallen victim to time but the arrival of Gouveia would ensure that the Foxes finisher is presented with enough opportunities in front of goal to get back to his best, due to his proven ability to consistently create chances from a wide position.

The reported Leicester target, who scored ten goals in 25 league games for Benfica's B team in the 2021/22 season, could help the English dynamo to rediscover his goalscoring touch and that is one reason why he could be an excellent addition to Maresca's squad.

Therefore, the club should work hard to secure a deal to sign the Portuguese starlet to improve their wide options and fill the creative gap that was left by Maddison's departure earlier this summer.
