The EIGHT essential ingredients of a ‘Cult Hero’ in football

The Cult Hero in football is a romantic and sentimental side to the beautiful game that will never fade away. In today’s game, the cult hero is even more important with the vast amount of money involved with the sport and the multi-media coverage of the top players in the game. So forget Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, even your Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand at least for the time being as I construct the essential ingredients as to what makes a Cult Hero.

When constructing the recent Top TEN Cult Hero article, I had a list of 50 odd players and probably even more if I kept on researching. The fact is, the cult hero is in abundance in the game and this week they should be celebrated because without them, it just wouldn’t be football as we know it! But what makes a cult hero? The standards are pretty high and wide so let’s go through some of the necessary traits…..

The Unsung Hero – The player that does not make the headlines but always gives 110% without fail. He may not get on the score sheet often or be partial to a step over or a Cruyff turn but when he’s out of the team you realise what an important player he is. Ian Holloway summed up this type of player with this funny quote : “It’s all very well having a great pianist playing but it’s no good if you haven’t got anyone to get the piano on the stage in the first place, otherwise the pianist would be standing there with no bloody piano to play.”

The Eccentric – This player is all about personality. Whether it’s the comedy factor of Jimmy Bullard or Gazza, or the crazy hairstyles like Marc Bircham or Taribo West, there is something about them than the average footballer. Or it could be players like Andrei Kanchelskis or Lee Trundle who liked to do some showboating on the pitch, check them out on YouTube for your own entertainment. Also the likes of former USA defender Alexi Lalas fit this bill perfectly.

The Trouble Maker – The pantomime villain that the opposition love to hate but you love him for exactly that. Whether it’s the exuberant tackles or moaning to the referee, it’s always a fiery encounter when they are on the field. Robbie Savage deserves a mention here although he could also fit the eccentric side of things with his flowing blonde hair. Other shouts have to be Vinnie Jones and FFC’s very own Neil Ruddock, without these types of players football wouldn’t have character.

[ad_pod id=’fox-mpu’ align=’right’]

Mr Football Club – Joining the club as a young boy and playing out his whole career at the club. This Cult Hero is in the fans’ hearts forever although he may not have been the best they’ve ever seen, his loyalty is seen as something far greater. Southampton can boast a fair few of these players with the likes of Matthew Le Tissier, Jason Dodd and Francis Benali. Also former Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Steve Bull, these types of cult hero’s are usually involved with the club long after they retire.

The Foreigner – Perhaps more favourable away from the top clubs where players from abroad are in abundance, the foreign signing can become a bit of a cult favourite amongst a section of supporters. I fondly remember the likes of Argentinean left back Gino Padula at QPR who looked a bit out of place playing in the old Division Two but was admired at Loftus Road during his time there. Other shouts have to go to ‘Nobby’ Solano of Newcastle and Richard Sneekes at West Bromwich Albion, let’s not forget Juninho and Emerson at Middlesbrough.

It’s in the Name – Everyone loves a good football chant and some players’ names are just asking for it and in return they become a hit with the fans. It wasn’t that long ago down at QPR where we had Doudou and Shittu playing in the same team, other names include the likes of Uwe Fuchs (Middlesbrough, Millwall) and Joseph Desire-Job. It does not have to be a funny name for a popular chant amongst the terraces, I have a dozen of examples I could use to prove my point but such language would not be appropriate.

So bad, they’re good – In some cases the Cult Hero stems from the player being so bad that they actually have an ironic following by supporters. That striker who never seems to score but always finds a way into the first team, Carl Leaburn anybody? Or it could be the likes of former Arsenal midfielder John Jensen or current Watford defender Lloyd Doyley who score once every solar eclipse but the fans love to shout ‘shoot!’ whenever they get the ball.

One Hit Wonder – Ever heard of Jimmy Glass? He is a Carlisle United legend despite only making 3 appearances for the club on loan. Why? Because the Goalkeeper scored, yes scored, an injury time winner back in 1999 in the last game of the season which kept the Cumbrian side in the Football League.

Clinical Man City please Roberto Mancini

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has heaped praise on his expensively assembled side following their 2-0 victory at Wigan Athletic on Sunday.

Carlos Tevez opened the scoring just before the break as he chipped over the advancing Ali Al Habsi before turning provider for Yaya Toure, who secured all three points with his first goal for the club as the Citizens jumped from 13th to fourth in the table with their second success of the campaign.

The win was crucial ahead of next weekend's pivotal test with champions and league leaders Chelsea at Eastlands and Mancini was delighted that his men adapted to the troublesome conditions at the DW Stadium.

He said:"We played a good game. It wasn't easy because Wigan played very well and aggressive.

"The pitch was very hard and difficult to play on.

"The first goal was very important for us. The goal changed the match.

"Against Sunderland and Blackburn we had chances to score goals, so when Tevez scored, it obviously changed the game.

Transfer Plan B for Tottenham to ponder? Spurs braced for £4m raid – Best of THFC

Harry Redknapp has had plenty to say ahead of Tottenham’s trip to the Etihad Stadium; a game which the Spurs boss believes is not the ‘must win’ that everyone would have you believe. Redknapp feels that 8pts is a small margin to retrieve at this stage of the season where everyone will take points each other.

The Tottenham manager of course is the master of deflecting the pressure of his football teams and he has bundled a shed load onto City by suggesting that if Spurs were in a position to pay players £250k a week then he would fully expect them to be top of the table and winning the title. While many will see Redknapp as having a point; the actual reality is that splashing the cash brings no guarantees. Tomorrow’s game promises to be a classic, although it is certainly a tough one to call.

In this week at FFC we have seen a mixed bag of blogs that includes Tottenham could find inspiration from Germany; now or never for Redknapp, while conflicting reports over the club’s pursuit of Loic Remy. We also have new features including quote of the week and a full match preview ahead of the trip to the Etihad Stadium.

“That is new to us and maybe people would expect us to fall away in the second half of the season but, as players, we believe in our ability and we believe we can keep getting results. Match Preview v Manchester City

Tottenham will be eager to dish out some payback on league leaders Manchester City when they travel to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Roberto Mancini’s men thrashed Spurs 5-1 in September and should be fearful of a backlash from the North Londoners. Despite a slight wobble in recent weeks City remain comfortable at the top three clear or rivals United and six ahead of Harry Redknapp’s side. Having spent much of the season playing breathtakingly exciting football their win at Wigan on Monday night owed much to their ability to dig in and grid out results. The loss of Vincent Kompany to suspension has hit them hardest in recent week with youngster Stefan Savic struggling to adapt to the pace and physicality’s of the English game. However the grit and determination displayed at the DW Stadium will go a long way for City as they aim to bag their first ever Premier League title. Their record at the Etihad Stadium is perfect after 10 wins in a row whilst they scored 31 goals and conceded only four. They’ll need another valiant display on Sunday if they are to maintain that unbeaten home record and put some distance between themselves and their third placed visitors.

It’s been an unbelievable campaign for Spurs as they continue to stay involved in the title race. Redknapp will be desperate for his side to enact some revenge on City after the White Hart Lane mauling they suffered although since that game they’ve won from 14 out of the 19 subsequent fixtures losing just once. Since then Tottenham have been irresistible and deservedly sit in the top three just two victories away from top spot. Despite being held at home to Wolves last week they will be confident of toppling the league leaders on their own patch especially with Scott Parker and Luka Modric resuming their midfield partnership. The signing of Parker in the summer was seen as the final piece of Redknapp’s jigsaw as it would allow Modric to concentrate on creating goals instead of worrying about fulfilling his defensive duties. The Croatian has been a driving force in attack linking up to great effect with Gareth Bale and Emmanuel Adebayor whilst Parker sits back and cuts out any threat from the opposition. The duo will be key to keeping City’s midfield three quiet on Sunday as well as getting wingers Bale and Aaron Lennon into the game and providing killer balls for Jermaine Defoe who will start in place of Adebayor who can’t play against his parent club.

Manchester City 1st : 51 points

Last six: W W L D W W

Team news: Vincent Kompany is still serving a ban and misses out alongside Micah Richards who has a hamstring injury. Mario Balotelli could feature despite picking up an ankle knock.

Key Player: David Silva

After spending much of Christmas on the sidelines the silky Spaniard roared back into life on Monday against Wigan. City will be grateful that Silva has finally recovered from injury and he’ll be sure to make up for lost time against Tottenham on Sunday.

Tottenham Hotspur 3rd : 46 points

Last six: D W W D W D

Team news: Spurs have seven first team players out injured for their trip to the Etihad Stadium whilst Emmanuel Adebayor will be missing as he isn’t permitted to play against his parent club.

Key Player: Luka Modric

Breaking down a City defence that has conceded just four times at home will be extremely difficult but a challenge Modric will savour. The Croatian has been superb for Tottenham this season as they aim to close the gap on the league leaders.

PREDICTION

City’s record at the Etihad Stadium is phenomenal but they’ve been shaky of late and Vincent Kompany’s absence continues to haunt them. Spurs will see an opportunity to write the wrongs of the 5-1 they took in September and inflict a first home defeat of the season on Roberto Mancini’s men.

Score 2-2

BB Round-up – Fergie’s transfer regret, Harry and Kenny’s £15m battle, Madrid wait in the wings should Wenger wish to move on

With the race for the Premier League title looking all but over following United’s hard fought victory, the attention now moves to the bottom of the table and who is going to stay in the division. With West Ham and Wigan both losing it has enabled both Wolves and Blackpool to move away after picking up a valuable point against Fulham and Newcastle respectively. You will be a brave man to put any wager down on who is likely to stay-up and you do sense it is likely to go down to the very last kick of the season.

In the papers this morning there has been a mixed bag of stories that includes news that Gerard Houllier’s progress is encouraging; Fergie admits Raul regret, while the Premier League’s chairman comes under fresh scrutiny.

Arsene Wenger happy with physical games

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has no problems with the rough and tumble of the Premier League, but he does want to see players adopt a more cautious approach when they go in for tackles.

The Gunners will be without Abou Diaby for Wednesday's Champions League opener against Braga after he suffered injury in the weekend victory over Bolton Wanderers.

Diaby was pole-axed by a full-blooded challenge from Trotters hard-man Paul Robinson and, although Wenger is relaxed over the physical nature of some of his side's opponents, he doesn't want to see things get out of hand.

"I would say even the English referees are different when they have matches in Europe. There is less permissive on goalkeepers, on commitment," he said.

"But more protection can become boring as well – I have seen some countries when every little push or shoulder-to-shoulder is a foul and then it becomes boring because they interrupt the game too much.

"I prefer, by miles, the philosophy of the English game – but you need to know everyone goes for the ball.

"I must say I love the way the English game is played in England and the one restriction has to be full commitment with the intention of going for the ball and only for the ball.

"Then, I prefer English football, ten times as much to the European game. The English game becomes dangerous when the players go to hurt each other."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

Freidel, Hart, De Gea…who has had the greatest impact?

Some teams at the top have been questioned over their defence this season: Arsenal , Manchester United and Chelsea, surprisingly. However, this campaign has seen a high volume of goals conceded and in fact, they’ve been flying in at a rate higher than any campaign since Manchester City last won the top division in 1967/68. They’ve conceded fewer than 17 of the other Premier Leagues teams and sit top. They’ve also scored the most.

With goals coming thick and fast since August, not only does it highlight some lacklustre defending that we’ve been gifted from the likes of Bolton and Blackburn, but it has given a platform for the men behind them; the often described “loneliest players on the pitch”, the last line of defence and the point winners (Michel Vorm ) or the point losers (Bartosz Bialkowski.) As is the nature of the role, they’re either lauded by their team mates after making a terrific save and earning their team victory, or they’ve just suffered the pains of the most unforgiving role in football.

But in between the sticks – who has been the best and worst this season?

Paul Robinson – the worst?

At the beginning of last season the former-England ‘keeper may not have been former anymore; when Fabio Capello called him up for the first set of friendlies post-World Cup melancholy, it was the Blackburn ‘keeper that was the deciding factor in him not featuring in the games – he pulled the plug on his international career, retiring at the ‘keeping young age of 31. He, unlike the F.A, told Capello “no more” having been mucked around enough by the meddling Italian.

15 months later and I for one am grateful that Paul Robinson didn’t seize the opportunity to step between the sticks for England once more. While Hart enjoys an unbeaten spell for England of 16 games and sits at the top of the Premier League, having conceded only 15 in 15 games, with Manchester City, Paul Robinson is second to bottom in the league with Blackburn Rovers, having conceded the most goals in the league. Quickfire critics will shout the obvious “Joe Hart ’s got Richards , Lescott , Kompany and Clichy in front of him,” and I’ll give you that; well done, good knowledge. However, Paul Robinson’s not just behind the 2nd worst defence: he’s got the lowest saves-to-shots ratio of any regular Premier League goalkeeper this season at 52%, he’s only 14th in the leader board for most saves, despite facing 69 shots, and he’s the ‘keeper that’s seen the most points lost from leading.

[divider]

Michel Vorm – the best?

When the Netherlands World Cup second-choice goalkeeper was signed for little over £1m from FC Utrecht, by Premier League new boys Swansea City FC, predicting such success would’ve been hasty. However, the international shot-stopper, who’s been capped by his country 8 times, has arguably been the best Premier League goalkeeper so far this campaign.

His penalty save against Clint Dempsey in the dying stages of his club’s weekend 2-0 home win against Fulham, was his second penalty save of the season, making him the #1 in that category along with Howard, Hennessey and Al-Habsi, and his 59th save of the season. Only David de Gea, Hennessey and Brad Friedel have made more saves, but what they can’t brag is a home record that stands at only two goals conceded.

In Michel Vorm ’s 15 games in goal for The Swans this season, in the Premier League, only two of the twenty goals they’ve shipped have been at home and they’ve kept six of Vorm’s seven clean sheets at the Liberty Stadium. No ‘keeper has kept as many clean sheets as Vorm has so far this season and none can brag as many home clean sheets either. At home, Michel Vorm ’s side has only lost once – a 1-0 loss to Manchester United , thanks to an acute header from the Mexican, Javier Hernandez. Vorm has kept a clean sheet whilst making over five saves, three times too.

The rest of the contenders – who else is shutting teams out or letting leads slip?

Brad Friedel ’s debut saw the most saves in one game so far this season with 13 shots being stopped by the aging American, but he let 3 past him, meaning that save success rate for one game comes in at 81%. Over the campaign, Friedel’s only been on the losing side three times, but in the top six, only Arsenal have conceded more and 8 of them were in one game.

David de Gea has conceded fewer than all other #1s bar Pepe Reina, who has conceded the fewest in the whole Premier League with 13, and this is down to his own handy work, not his defence; Manchester United’s Spaniard’s saves-to-shot ratio was 79% 10 games into the Premier League, 33% better than his Top 4 rival’s, Petr Cech , who at the same point in the season had the then worst saves-to-shot ratio, since taken by Paul Robinson . Since then the Czech has kept 3 clean sheets in his last five games.

The weekend highlighted the enormity of contribution a ‘keeper can have, with Victor Valdes showing how you can give away a goal 22 seconds in and Michel Vorm showing how you can take all three points with a penalty stop 87 minutes in. Whether you’ve got Paul Robinson, John Ruddy or Joe Hart in goal, who’s been the best between the sticks for you?

BB Round-up – Liverpool star pledges future, Arsenal set to cash in, Defoe believes Spurs can halt Chelsea’s title bid

Manchester United put one leg in the Champions League final with an impressive 2-0 victory in Germany last night. Ryan Giggs was the standout performer for the Red Devils which led to Fergie claiming he only wished that the Welshman could carry on for a few more years. In the papers this morning there have been a mixed bag of stories that include Chelsea apparently wanting Guus Hiddink regardless; Reina pledges future to Liverpool, while Etherington faces FA Cup final heartbreak. * Ferguson hails ‘one of our best displays in Europe’ – Guardian Chelsea want Hiddink regardless – Daily Telegraph Houllier may not return to dugout – Guardian Neuer’s fine audition could turn Ferguson’s head – Independent Reina wants to stay and ‘fight for titles’ – Guardian Gunners: We’ll sell Cesc – Sun Spurs can derail Chelsea’s title bid and keep pressure on City, says Defoe – Daily Mail With Tevez back in the fold City adjust sights from fourth to third – Independent Etherington facing FA Cup final heartbreak – Mirror Real boss Mourinho plans £25m summer raid for United winger Nani – Daily Mail

A poor excuse to leave Upton Park?

West Ham United’s utility man Valon Behrami has expressed a wish to return to Italy, citing his families’ inability to adapt to London life. The ex-Lazio player could return to the Stadio Olimpico but with fierce city rivals Roma. His desire to move resembles the recent comments of Javier Mascherano who stated that his wife had failed to settle in Liverpool. Previous transfer windows have associated Valon Behrami with moves to Palmero and Juventus. But is the unsettled midfielder’s reason for leaving adequate or is it a convenient digression to exit Upton Park and play Champions League football?

Behrami was signed by Alan Curbishley two summers ago for a fee of £5 million. He was initially deployed at right-back but was soon more commonly found either in right or central midfield. His first season ended prematurely as he sustained a serious knee injury in the club’s 1-0 victory over Manchester City but he had won over the fans with his tireless work ethic. Other Hammers players can be described as having this attribute but not to the extent of Behrami who ceases to stop running throughout an entire match. He is extremely effective at breaking up opposition attacks by using this energetic, rambunctious style. It is a surprising statistic that in 27 Premier League appearances last season he did not receive a single yellow card.

The Kosovo born, Swiss international did not find World Cup referees as lenient this summer as he was handed a straight red in his side’s group stage defeat to Chile. Regrettably Behrami’s incessant running often translates into a rushed and wild approach to the game. His passing is invariably inaccurate and for a pacy player who can go forward he has only scored one goal in each of his PL seasons. However, he took his goal against Hull this year comfortably after playing a quick one-two with Guillermo Franco. The number 21 could have added two more that day but was denied by the outstanding athleticism of Boaz Myhill.

Regardless of his flaws, a player who exhibits such hard work and can adapt to a variety of positions will entice the interest of other clubs, the latest being Roma. Their apparent interest is strengthened by his family feeling unsettled. “My daughter Sofia is now 18 months old and it is not easy to bring up a child in London. Besides Elena (his wife) does not have a big circle of friends here.” The player who once fervently celebrated in front of the Lazio ultras after scoring the winner in the Rome derby, says he would have no problem turning out for the Giallorossi. But are his comments a poor excuse for wanting to leave Upton Park? The location of the east London club and its Essex training base mean there are plenty of options beyond living in the city. Being fluent in English, Albanian and Italian he has previously helped players such as, Alessandro Diamanti adapt to their new club. Surely the former Verona player would be more believable if he admitted to the lure of playing alongside Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi in the Champions League under the stewardship of Claudio Ranieri.

Leaving the speculation surrounding his motivation for a transfer aside, Behrami is arguably a player West Ham can afford to lose. It is questionable whether he would be shifted to back to defence and the likes of Mark Noble, Scott Parker and Radoslav Kovac and Thomas Hitzlsperger can operate in a similar midfield role. A fee of around £8 million would help West Ham financially after a busy summer of spending. This potential move may make sense for all parties but the Sensi family who have owned Roma since 1993 are looking for buyers, having struggled to contain the club’s debt. Funds are scarce and therefore Behrami and his family may have to redouble their efforts to acclimatise to English life.

Kenny Dalglish stands by his man

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has stated that the club will continue to stand by Luis Suarez, as the striker is subject to investigation by the FA.

The governing body are currently looking into Patrice Evra’s claims that the South American attacker insulted him due to his race in October’s 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield.

If the Uruguay international is found guilty of the charges he is set to be fined and potentially suspended from action, but Dalglish is sticking by his star player.

“We have said many times before we cannot say anything which will be prejudicial,” the Scottish coach told reporters.

“We are standing right beside him and helping him as much as we possibly can. After it’s finished there is a chance to have a conversation.

“As I said last week the FA should have given you (the media) the information when everything was happening, not us,” he concluded.

Suarez has also been charged with making a derogatory gesture towards Fulham fans at Craven Cottage following the Merseysiders 1-0 defeat to Martin Jol’s men on December 3rd.

Liverpool are currently five points adrift of the top four, and travel to take on Aston Villa in Birmingham on Sunday.

Liverpool to seal deal for Spaniard

Cavaliering Newcastle full back Jose Enrique’s time at St James Park could well be nearing an end. Enrique, 25 has been linked with a host of top clubs after an array of fine performances so far this season for the Magpies.

The former Villarreal man signed a 5 year deal with Newcastle in 2007 and it was rumoured he was waiting until Newcastle secured their top flight status before renewing it. However, Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has revealed on Norwegian television that a deal has been struck for the Spaniard to move to Anfield in the summer. The deal is thought to be in the region of £15 million.

“From what I’ve heard, yes, the deal has been done” Thompson told the TV2 presenter.

Thompson is a close friend of Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish, and in an assessment of Enrique he went on to say “He had a difficult first season coming into the Premiership a couple of years ago but he really understands the game now.”

“He’s one of those full-backs who is good going forward but he’s also a good defender and I think that is the main thing.” After showing their persistence in the capture of Andy Carroll, Enrique’s future looks ominous for Newcastle fans.

There has been no official word from Liverpool or Newcastle on the matter, but potentially losing one of their top performers will be a huge concern to Newcastle.
