Collateral damage or unnecessary casualty at Old Trafford?

When your team is in with a shout of signing a 30 league goal a season striker, the chances are, you’re not particularly likely to think of any ramifications. With reports suggesting that Manchester United are perilously close to acquiring the signature of Robin van Persie, the only thing United fans are thinking about is how many the Dutchman might net next season.

But should the transfer go ahead, not everyone is going to prosper from it and there is likely to be at least one casualty in the Old Trafford dressing room. Berbatov might be off, but Van Persie, Rooney, Welbeck and Hernandez can’t all fit in the same team. Only 18 months ago, Javier Hernandez was one of the hottest strikers in the Premier League, but the Mexican could be left sweating should Van Persie switch London for Manchester.

It may be tempting fate to talk about Robin van Persie as a Manchester United player and the chances are that we could all be well off the mark in pre-empting his transfer away from Arsenal. But with speculation reaching something of a fever pitch in recent days, now feels like the right time to evaluate the real impact of his potential arrival.

Sir Alex Ferguson may simply view Robin van Persie’s availability as an opportunity that’s too good to turn down. The striker may have a suspect injury record and it’s quite likely that he will come at an extreme expense to the wage bill aswell, but even at £20million, it still offers real value for one of the league’s few proven goal scorers. At 29, he is unlikely to have much of a resale value if any at all, but if he fires United to a couple of Premier League titles or European silverware, it won’t matter.

But there is only so much room at the inn. Not everyone can co-exist in the striking ranks at Old Trafford and if United really do compliment Wayne Rooney with Robin van Persie, then a passage to a first team striking spot looks bleak for the rest. That’s if it wasn’t hard enough already- just ask Dimitar Berbatov.

So why single out Javier Hernandez for the doom mongering?

Fate hasn’t been too kind on the Mexican after his breakthrough year for United in hid debut 2010-11 term. This time last year saw Hernandez struggling with a bizarre head injury that saw him suffering with migraines after he was concussed by a football to the head, of all things. Consequently, it was Danny Welbeck that started the season leading the line with Wayne Rooney for United as Hernandez missed the opening game against West Brom.

But what was Hernandez’s loss was ultimately Welbeck’s gain as the England striker never looked back, The two seemed to be in direct competition for a place in the team alongside Rooney and it was Welbeck who often seemed to get the nod over the 24-year-old Hernandez. That didn’t necessarily stop the Mexican from scoring goals though.

Hernandez seems to epitomize the phrase ‘right place, right time,’ and he proved that as the season went on. Following a successful two-goal return to the starting line-up against Bolton, Hernandez popped up off the bench to score in the controversial 1-1 draw with Liverpool which saw him hit a good run of form going into the new year. But even as he scored against Everton in the 1-0 win at Goodison Park, there was a feeling that he, Rooney and Welbeck might not be a particularly affluent starting trio. And so It proved as more often than not, as Rooney was paired with either Welbeck or Hernandez, as opposed to all three starting together.

But just as Hernandez was looking to find some form and get a run of games, injury really disrupted his form and flow. An Ashley Cole tackle, which was potentially one of the worst of the season, damaged ankle ligaments back in September and a freak injury against Villa in December to the same ankle set him back further. Both knocks took time to get back to full fitness, but as Welbeck cemented his place in the team further, full match time seemed hard to come by.

In the second half of the season, Hernandez was by no means poor, but he seemed to lack a bit of the zip of his previous term. His aforementioned fitness issues probably didn’t help and when your team’s challenging for the title, there isn’t any place for sentiment. But surprisingly, Hernandez actually played one more league game than he did last term and managed 10 goals in the process. Not a terrible return for someone who supposedly endured a difficult second season.

It is difficult to see how Sir Alex Ferguson would rank his strikers next term, although if Van Persie does come, Hernandez is vying for third choice with Welbeck. The problem is for the Mexican, that Welbeck offers the more varied skillset. The young England man offers a more physical presence with the better all round play where as Hernandez has more specialist goal scoring attributes. You can argue till you’re blue in the face about who you think is better, but Welbeck’s versatility is likely to see more game time- he could survive in an altered formation in the same way Daniel Sturridge did at Chelsea. Hernandez has to play more centrally.

As a result of that, the signing of Van Persie could drastically harm his chances of first team football. But one half-difficult term doesn’t necessarily mean that his Old Trafford future is doomed to failure. Sir Alex wouldn’t hand out a five-year contract, as he did to Hernandez last October, unless he seriously rates his future at the club. Furthermore, Robin van Persie’s injury record is more than just an elephant in the room. Last season was the first time he’s made over 30 league appearances in his career. The chances are that Welbeck and Hernandez would both see game time.

But after Welbeck’s performances in the Euros, there is a chance that Hernandez could find himself as the fourth choice striker should Robin van Persie come in. There is plenty of football to be played next season, but last season’s fourth choice striker didn’t see all that much game time. And he once cost £30million.

Hernandez is a great talent and a fantastic striker. But if Fergie really pushes on with Van Persie, then the Mexican is going to have to make every chance count next season. Or else face an uncertain Old Trafford future.

Bolton v Manchester United – Match Preview

Bolton’s tricky start to the season continues as they host Champions Manchester United in Saturday’s teatime kick-off. After the Red Devils obliterated opponents Arsenal 8-2 in their last outing Owen Coyle’s side will have to be at their very best to prevent the Manchester United juggernaut rolling on.

Although his side have a midweek Champions League tie away to Benficia to think about, Sir Alex Ferguson is expected to continue with the same IX that started against Arsenal apart from Danny Welbeck who is out with a hamstring strain. The more than capable figure of Javier Hernandez will probably step in to partner in-form Wayne Rooney in leading the United attack. Captain Nemanja Vidic, Antonio Valencia and Rafael are still all missing for United but Darren Fletcher should be back in the mix having played 180 minutes for Scotland on international duty in the last week.

The Trotters, who are coming into the game on the back of two successive league defeats after losing to Manchester City and Liverpool, have a number of long term injuries. Lee who is out for the season and Stuart Holden head the list while Sean Davis also appears doubtful for the game due to a knee injury. Owen Coyle has used the same starting XI in all three of his side’s league ties thus far and this is likely to continue on Saturday. Gael Kakuta, who is on loan from Chelsea and David N’gog who signed on a permanent deal in the transfer window are both likely to start their Bolton career’s from the bench.

It will be a much tougher game than what Man United faced in their last outing with United likely to meet a resolute Bolton side who have a decent record against the Champions but despite this I still think United will maintain their fine start to the season with another away victory.

Key Players:

Gary Cahill: After impressing whilst playing for England in the recent Euro 2012 qualifiers, Cahill will surely be an important player for the Trotters as they try to contain the lethal attacking force of Manchester United.

Ashley Young: The former Villa winger has really hit the ground running at Old Trafford and looks to be in the form of his career. Expect him to be influential in another United victory this weekend.

Verdict: 0-2

Busquets re-signs with Barca

Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets was delighted after signing a new deal that will keep him at the Nou Camp until 2015.

Busquets, 22, has become a regular member of Pep Guardiola’s squad, making 73 La Liga appearances since he broke into the first team in 2008-09.

The Spaniard’s new deal guarantees his future at one of Europe’s most prestigious football clubs and he said he was thrilled to be staying at Barcelona.

“It is a dream to continue my career here,” Busquets said.

“It is very difficult to stay here for a long time, but this is another step. I am very happy. I am very young, so there is still a lot of time. I hope that Xavi and Puyol can continue as well.”

“I am still young and there is a lot to achieve still. I hope that the remaining years on my contract are as good as those that have gone before, full of good news and happiness.”

“I never thought that I would have such a successful time here. All the individual success and titles, which are important. I think I have made the most of things, and I hope that things continue the same or even better.”

After signing on Thursday, Busquets was already turning his attention to Barcelona’s next match, a Copa del Rey semi-final second leg against Almeria on

And despite Barca winning the first leg 5-0, Busquets said the job was not done yet.

“The tie isn’t over yet,” he said.

“We did very well at the start of the game, but at 3-0 a goal from them would have made things a bit more difficult.”

“Everything is difficult nowadays, so we deserve credit. We can’t think that every game will be 5-0.”

After arch-rivals Real Madrid won their first-leg clash against Sevilla 1-0, a Copa del Rey final between Spain’s two biggest clubs has become a possibility, but Busquets says it is premature to discuss any potential match-up.

“They are great rivals, but first of all we have to get through to the final. Then we will find out our opponent,” he said.

“There is still a game to go and it would be a lack of respect to Sevilla and Almeria to think otherwise. We have to wait.”

“Obviously, we have to focus on the present in order to keep our chances alive in all three competitions at the end of the season. The only one that is looking closer to finishing is the Cup. In the league, we have to take things day by day.”

Manchester City keen to sign Paulo Dybala

Manchester City are thought to be ready to make a bid for highly-rated Argentine youngster Paulo Dybala, who has been touted as the ‘new Sergio Aguero’, according to Mirror Football.

The Premier League champions are eager to add Robin van Persie to their ranks this summer, but are thought to be keeping an eye out for young talent, with the Instituto forward certainly fitting the bill.

The 18-year-old bagged 17 goals in 38 appearances for his home-town club in his first season in senior football, and as such is being monitored by some of Europe’s top teams.

Palermo president Mauricio Zamparini revealed that the Italian side had sealed a deal to sign Dybala three months ago, but it is thought that this is untrue as the Sicilians negotiated with an agent not authorised to represent the teenager.

As such both Inter and AC Milan are keeping tabs on Dybala, with Chelsea also credited with an interest.

Despite this, Roberto Mancini’s men will offer £5 million for the player, who will not need a work permit as he has European grandparents.

Caption Competition: An Arsenal Collector’s Item

The ‘will he won’t he stay’ transfer dilemma continues for Cesc Fabregas as the Spanish midfielder is constantly linked with an exit from Arsenal. Every summer Barcelona are bidding for Cesc and surely it’s only a matter of time until they get their man. The Spaniard is still an Arsenal player for now at least (although at the time of reading this he may have moved to Barca) and will line up for the Gunners at the start of the new season. Here is Mr Fabregas joining in the Arsenal open training session, giving fans at the Emirates Stadium something that might soon turn out to be a collector’s item: a picture of Cesc in an Arsenal training top. Babel fined for Twitter outburst

Liverpool winger Ryan Babel has been fined 10,000 pounds and warned over his future conduct for his Twitter outburst earlier this month.Babel, 24, was hit with the fine by the Football Association after he posted comments and images on his Twitter page concerning referee Howard Webb.

The comments came in the wake of Liverpool’s FA Cup third-round exit to Manchester United at Old Trafford, with a digitally altered photo showing Webb wearing a Manchester United kit.

Webb awarded a controversial penalty in the match in favour of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side and also sent off Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

Babel accepted a charge of improper conduct and was hit with the fine at a Regulatory Commission hearing on Monday.

“Social network sites, like Twitter, must be regarded as being in the public domain and all participants need to be aware, in the same way as if making a public statement in other forms of media, that any comments would be transmitted to a wider audience,” the Regulatory Commission Chairman Roger Burden said.

“It is their responsibility to ensure only appropriate comments are used.”

Meanwhile, Manchester United defender Rafael da Silva has also been charged with improper conduct.

The Brazilian defender was charged after his outburst at referee Mike Dean in Sunday’s goalless draw against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

Da Silva was sent off for a second yellow card and vented his disgust at Dean after his decision.

“Manchester United defender Rafael da Silva has today been charged by the FA with improper conduct,” an FA statement read.

“The charge relates to the player’s conduct towards match official Mike Dean following his dismissal in Manchester United’s fixture at Tottenham.”

Da Silva has until 6pm GMT on Tuesday to respond to the charge.

Brendan Rodgers plotting move for Italy international

Liverpool are ready to make an offer for Parma striker Fabio Borini, according to The Daily Mail.

The Reds are eager to bolster their playing squad this summer, with new boss Brendan Rodgers keen to bring in a few new faces to freshen things up at Anfield.

One of the main reasons for the Merseysiders’ poor eighth-placed finish in 2011-12 was the lack of a clinical edge, with a new centre forward thought to be firmly on the club’s wishlist.

Borini spent last season on loan at Roma, but is owned by Parma, and will return to the Stadio Ennio Tardini after the capital-city side decided not to make the attacker’s move permanent.

Rodgers knows Borini well, as the sprightly forward spent time on loan at the Liberty Stadium in 2011, scoring six goals in nine games for the Welsh side.

The new Liverpool boss is eager to use that link to bring the hitman back to England, however there are thought to be a raft of other interested parties.

Borini is currently on international duty with Italy at Euro 2012, but has had limited chances to play.

Beckham ‘sick’ over failed bid

Former England captain David Beckham has expressed his disgust at his nation’s failed attempt to win the rights to the 2018 FIFA World Cup.England’s bid team – consisting of Manchester United legend Beckham, England Prime Minister David Cameron and Prince William – managed only one vote, losing the bid to Russia.

Beckham, who plays for Major League Soccer side Los Angeles Galaxy, said he felt ‘sick’ that England’s bid failed to attract more than the solitary vote.

“The situation we see now leaves a sick feeling in your mouth,” Beckham told the Daily Mirror.

“We were happy with the bid we put forward and it gives you a real sick feeling not getting it.”

“There was so much hard work that went into that bid. Nobody could have done any more.”

“When you factor in that we also had the weight of the Prime Minister and the future king of England (Prince William) behind us, it doesn’t get much bigger and better than that.”

Beckham, who has not retired from international duty despite having not appeared for England since October 2009, said he was still feeling good about playing club football with the LA Galaxy, and that he had plenty of life in his career yet.

“One, maybe two more years, I still feel good, I still feel healthy and I’m still enjoying getting up in the morning to go to training,” he said.

“Until I get up and don’t feel the same, I’ll continue. I still have to play at a certain level, but I think I can continue to do that.”

“I’m just going to have to see how my body feels at the end of this year. I had my (Achilles tendon) injury last year and I’m getting a bit older now.”

“We’ll have to wait and see but if I carry on enjoying my football, then I want to continue.”

FIVE things Arsenal fans would like to see in their stockings this Christmas

Yes, it’s the Christmas season and joviality should be flooding the air, but thanks to recent results, Arsenal fans may have little reason to be ‘jolly’. Manchester United’s 1-0 victory over the Gunners at Old Trafford was further evidence that all is not right with this Arsenal squad. There may be no quick fix for all these problems, but I believe that with a few, tweaks and changes, this squad could genuinely challenge for honours. As it’s the season of giving, I scrawled a quick letter to Santa to see if he can redress some of our problems. My Christmas wish-list has five items:

1.  Some big-game nous: It’s a well established fact in recent times that Arsenal simply cannot handle the bigger teams. Last season The Gunners dropped all 12 potential points in games against Chelsea and Manchester United. This season Arsenal have already lost to United and Chelsea. If Arsenal want to win the League, they’ll have to start chipping points away from their fellow title contenders. More important than the points, is the message that beating big teams sends out to the rest of the League. The message has to be: “We are good enough to take United apart and we’re going to fight tooth and nail for this title”. At the moment, the message eminating from the Emirates is that Arsenal are brittle enough to break when pushed too hard. So, please Santa – grant the Gunners a backbone.

2. A cure for Fabregas’ hamstring problems: Arsenal’s talisman hasn’t been able to play for large portions of this season. Had he been fit and ready to go against United, I have no doubt that it would have changed the landscape of the game. Unfortunately, his mysterious hamstring injury meant that he could only afford 30 minutes of game time during which he didn’t really appear at the races. Get well soon Cesc – Arsenal need you.

3. A fresh start between the posts: I’m still not convinced that Fabianski has what it takes to be Arsenal’s number one goalkeeper. For every good game he’s had this season, there’s been another game where he’s committed a howler. He doesn’t inspire confidence in front of an already shaky back-four. Wenger must work to address this. 20 year-old Wojciech Szczesny is the perfect man to fill his gloves. He was thrown in at the deep end against Manchester United, but performed admirably (especially the Schmeichel-esque save against Anderson). We know from his performances in the Carling Cup that this wasn’t just a one-off. It’s time for him to get a run of games in the first-team.

4. A pair of unbreakable legs for Robin van Persie: Chamakh has had a good start to his Arsenal career, but it’s Robin Van Persie who can provide Arsenal with that ‘something special’ upfront. Whilst Chamakh excels in out-and-out goal-scoring, Van Persie can change a game with a moment of magic. Very little needs to be said about his talent and technical ability – what Arsenal really need now is for him to get a long run of games in the squad.

5. A trophy: This one goes without saying. Winning breeds winning. A trophy could reinvigorate this club. It’s been a long wait for Arsenal fans and it’s time to pick up some silverware. Arsenal are still in the running for the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League and are favourites for the Carling Cup. There can be no more excuses.

The Biggest Challenge Facing Roy Hodgson?

As the new England manager, many questions are being asked of Roy Hodgson prior to his leading of the team into Euro 2012. Who will lead the line of attack in the absence of Wayne Rooney against France and Sweden? Will Gerrard and Lampard be given another chance together in midfield? Is John Terry’s inclusion going to be turbulent to everyone else in the team? Will they be raving?

There has already been plenty of speculation during the first month of the former West Brom manager’s England reign. From surprise squad selections to the inclusion of Gary Neville as part of the coaching team, there is plenty to talk about. Past England managers have had plenty of problems with team antics, and players from Aston Villa and Sunderland have proven the dangers of gallivanting whilst in the public eye this season. It was something that Fabio Capello was always very strongly against, and to some extent worked to his disadvantage. Roy Hodgson will be hoping to avoid the same fate, by taking his team out for some much needed bonding this week, ensuring everyone is on the same wavelength by June 11th.

After all, what better way is there to prepare your team for a major tournament? All the teams are doing it, but just what does this team bonding consist of? A tranquil trip to a museum perhaps, maybe a spa session, or even a relaxing day on the golf course? Well, Paddy Power’s recent advert shows what England’s team bonding may consist of prior to the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine, and it certainly isn’t anything as relaxing as that!

The advert is based on the viral sensation ‘Russian Forest Rave’ and shows some of England’s key players raving it up and having a whale of a time in a Ukrainian forest. Whether or not this is what Roy Hodgson had in mind with his team bonding this week, this video has already become very popular.

The new England boss has demanded his team are on their ‘best behaviour’ in Poland and Ukraine this summer, and this is probably the sort of thing he wouldn’t have had in mind. We all know what Ashley Cole, Wayne Rooney and co. are like though, and this video shows just the kind of bad behaviour you would expect Hodgson to be wary of.

Whilst we would all like to see a united England team this summer, there are probably better ways to ensure it than a techno rave in a Ukrainian forest!
