Rangers fans on vaccine proof v Hibernian

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been left fuming as an update emerged regarding their match at home to Hibernian on Sunday afternoon.

As per the club’s official website, supporters must now show a vaccine certificate if they wish to enter Ibrox and must be fully vaccinated and able to show proof of such, unless they are exempt.

While this should produce a safer environment, there are some loopholes that some Light Blues pointed out, as workers or volunteers at the stadium are exempt from these rules and could therefore cause a spread of the pandemic.

Others feel as if it should be their own choice whether or not to get vaccinated, while vaccine certificates or proof may not be easy to obtain for some supporters.

These Gers supporters fumed as the news was shared on Twitter, with one even going as far as to claim that it is ‘shameful’:

“What a shambles. The fact Rangers are having to clarify this stuff is beyond a joke.”

Spurs: Winks could be reborn under Nuno

Dele Alli isn’t the only player to benefit from Tottenham Hotspur’s change in management this season.

The 25-year-old attacking midfielder was quickly becoming a forgotten man under Jose Mourinho, featuring in just 15 league matches for a total of 617 minutes.

Since former Wolves boss Nuno Santo has taken to the Spurs dugout, however, the Englishman has started 100% of their league games this far, already playing more than a third of his total minutes from last season.

Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez have looked an entirely different prospect too, keeping three straight clean sheets despite being lambasted as “one of the worst” partnerships in the Premier League by ex-Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara last season.

Another name who appears to have been given a major lifeline is academy graduate Harry Winks.

According to The Sun on deadline day, the 25-year-old has left an impression on the Portuguese coach throughout pre-season and he is expected to garner much more game-time than last term.

Winks’ lack of minutes on the pitch saw him miss out on a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2020, despite being capped ten times by the Three Lions boss.

During the summer, he was regularly linked with a move away. There was £25m interest from Manchester United, whilst the likes of Leeds, Aston Villa and Everton were all mooted as potential destinations.

However, Winks has started both of Tottenham’s UEFA Europa Conference League matches and could well play a big part as the season goes on.

The £18m-rated ace made 15 appearances in the Premier League last season, playing a total of just 860 minutes. This is a player who Mauricio Pochettino once likened to Spanish legends Andres Iniesta and Xavi, yet he struggled to break into the squad under Mourinho.

Per the Evening Standard, Spurs’ former head coach said in 2018: “Harry has the profile of the perfect midfield player. His characteristics are perfect. When we talk about midfielders like Xavi and Iniesta, he’s like this type of player.”

This is surely the sort of profile of midfielder that Nuno would love, having had the pleasure of coaching Joao Moutinho at Molineux for the past few seasons.

That could be a big reason why he hasn’t allowed the deep-lying playmaker to leave in this transfer window, and as the report suggests, we could well see Winks as the latest Spurs player to be reborn under the new Spurs boss.

Wolves played a blinder with Dendoncker move

The philosophy since Fosun took on the ownership of Wolverhampton Wanderers has been to buy young players with sell on value.

If you excuse the likes of Raul Jimenez and Joao Moutinho then Wolves have quite evidently achieved that.

In signing vibrant young footballers like Adama Traore, Ruben Neves and Pedro Neto, the Midlands outfit could rake in a bucket load of cash over the next few years.

Traore was signed for £18m but Bruno Lage rejected an offer in the region of £30m from Tottenham over the summer.

Neves, meanwhile, has been touted at £40m and Pedro Neto has been talked about as a £50m player in some circles.

However, one player who goes under the radar at Wolves has also seen his value rise quite significantly since arriving in English football.

That happens to be Belgium international Leander Dendoncker.

The midfield brute signed for just £12.4m in 2018 and in the last three years his value, per Transfermarkt, has soared to the £27m mark.

That’s quite the rise for a player who is a regular among a Belgian squad thought to contain their golden generation.

Dendoncker is yet to start a match in the Premier League under new manager Bruno Lage but he played a key part under Nuno Santo after they were promoted from the Championship.

The 24-year-old didn’t miss a single league outing during the 2019/20 campaign and featured on 33 occasions last term, only sitting on the sidelines for five matches.

Rarely injured and versatile in terms of his positions, he has become a vital cog in the wheel at Molineux.

Initially a central midfielder, Nuno began playing Dendoncker as a centre-back last term and hailed him as “fantastic” in the process.

He did struggle in a clash with Manchester City but that wasn’t a fair litmus for a player starting in an unnatural position.

Wolves’ tough-tackling Belgian has improved since that clash and ended last term with 2.6 aerial duels per game – the third highest in the squad – and as their central defender with the most tackles per appearance at 1.6.

He is yet to show his true colours under Lage but his market value rise dictates that they have a player with enormous potential on their hands.

Fosun clearly played a blinder with this move three years ago.

Celtic: Yan Couto snubs Parkhead move

Manchester City right-back Yan Couto has turned down the chance to sign for Celtic, according to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, translated by Sport Witness.

The Lowdown: Couto saga

Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas has been on top of the Hoops’ pursuit of Couto, claiming last Wednesday that Celtic still had hope of signing the Brazilian.

The 19-year-old attended Celtic Park last Thursday for Celtic’s Europa League qualifier against Jablonec and was reportedly pleading for a Glasgow loan after receiving the VIP treatment.

However, Thomas revealed on Monday that Celtic have now turned their attention to Legia Warsaw’s Josip Juranovic, admitting the push to sign Couto came to nothing.

The Latest: Portuguese report

According to O Jogo, relayed by Sport Witness, Liga Nos side Braga are close to signing Couto.

The report claims that the teenager actually turned down the chance to join Celtic.

He now looks set to join Braga, who won’t have the option to make a loan move permanent next summer.

The Verdict: Celtic snubbed

It seems as if Couto snubbed CEO Dominic McKay when it came to joining Celtic, despite reports admitting he was desperate for a move to Scotland.

It shouldn’t come as a major blow, as the club have now made strides in their pursuit of Juranovic.

A £2.5m fee has been agreed for the Croatia international, who now looks set to fly to Scotland on the weekend to tie up a Parkhead move.

Ange Postecoglou wanted a right-back before the end of the window, and even though Couto turned down the chance to join the club, at least they will be getting one in Juranovic.

Liverpool set to offer Salah a new deal

Liverpool could be set to witness the incredible skills of Mohamed Salah at Anfield for many years to come after an exciting update regarding his future was revealed.

What’s the story?

The Eygpt international has long been linked with a potential move away from Liverpool, but the Reds are now reportedly set to offer him an astronomical new contract to keep him at the club.

As per an exciting update from Liverpool ECHO reporter Paul Gorst, the Merseyside outfit are very keen to extend Salah’s current deal, which expires in the summer of 2023, following his several incredible seasons on English shores.

Gorst’s report states: “The club are eager to reward his 31-goal showing last term with an improved deal that will make him the highest-paid player in the club’s history.”

Fans will be absolutely buzzing

News that the Liverpool hierarchy are set to offer Salah lucrative fresh terms over the coming weeks will surely have the club’s supporters absolutely buzzing.

The 29-year-old has been one of the Reds’ standout performers since his arrival back in 2017, scoring an incredible 125 goals in 203 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s charges.

Despite some accusations of him being selfish on occasion, Salah has also provided 47 assists for his teammates during his Liverpool career, playing a pivotal part in both their Champions League and Premier League triumphs in recent years.

However, he’s arguably never been as important to 19-time English champions as he is at this moment in time.

While the other members of Liverpool famed front three – Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino – suffered their own losses of form throughout 2020/21, Salah continued to put the ball in the back of the net with alarming regularity.

His 31 strikes in all competitions, 22 in the Premier League, helped to drag an underwhelming Liverpool side to third place in the top-flight standings last term, a finish which looked beyond them for large periods of the campaign.

It remains to be seen whether Salah puts pen to paper on a new contract or seeks pastures new, but the fanbase will be delighted by the club’s plans to reward their attacking talisman for his magnificent efforts.

They’ll now be hoping he agrees to stay at the club and hopefully, lead them to even more silverware in the future.

Spurs make Lionel Messi offer

According to ESPN (via Daily Express), Tottenham are one of three clubs to have made an offer for out-of-contract superstar Lionel Messi.

The Lowdown: Messi a free agent

After spending his entire career with Barcelona, Messi is now a free agent after his contract at the Camp Nou expired (Eurosport).

That now means he can be signed without a transfer fee, and there will no doubt be a whole host of clubs across the world who would be eager to capture the 151-cap Argentina international.

The Latest: Spurs make offer

It has now been stunningly reported that Spurs are one of three clubs to make an offer for the 34-year-old.

Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid are the two other sides said to be in pursuit, although French journalist Julien Laurens has said that the forward will join the Ligue 1 outfit.

The Verdict: Pipe dream

Who wouldn’t want to sign Messi? After all, the £72m-valued four-time Champions League winner (Transfermarkt) is an icon of the game – with six Ballons d’Or, he is perhaps the greatest player ever to take to the pitch. With 672 goals in 778 appearances for Barcelona (Transfermarkt), it seems incredible that he can now be signed for free – although his wages mean that it will not be a cheap deal.

That Tottenham are said to have even made a bid is remarkable. However, this really is just a pipe dream for Spurs – even if they could afford his salary, their lack of Champions League football hardly makes them the most enticing of options for Messi. Unfortunately for Daniel Levy and co, he is very likely to end up elsewhere.

In other news, Tottenham also want this Real Madrid ace.

Hatfield: Trevoh Chalobah was close to joining West Brom

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah was close to joining West Brom on loan this summer, journalist Luke Hatfield has told Football FanCast.

With the European champions stacked in defence, having the likes of captain Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger and Thiago Silva to call upon, it looked like Chalobah would have to leave the club this transfer window in order to get some game time.

However, the 22-year-old has featured regularly since pre-season under Thomas Tuchel, contributing to his side’s UEFA Super Cup triumph against Villarreal earlier this month and scoring in their opening Premier League fixture versus Crystal Palace.

It comes as a huge blow to Valerien Ismael and West Brom, who Hatfield says came close to signing Chalobah earlier this window.

“It really hurts when you see him scoring the goal he did for Chelsea on the opening day as an Albion fan because by all intents and purposes, that deal was really close to happening,” the Express & Star reporter revealed.

When you look at how Chalobah has performed for Chelsea so far and the fact that he can also play in midfield, it is probably fair to say he would have been a great addition to this West Brom squad.

Spurs ‘ready to invest’ in Vlahovic

According to journalist Enzo Bucchioni, speaking to Firenze Viola (via Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur are one of the clubs ‘ready to invest’ in a striker signing as he tips them for Fiorentina star Dusan Vlahovic.

The Lowdown: Vlahovic, the Serie A sensation…

It is no secret that the Serbian powerhouse has been turning many heads in the Italian top flight with his performances for La Viola, bagging a remarkable 21 goals and two assists 37 Serie A appearances (Transfermarkt).

Lauded as a ‘phenomenon’ by former Italy international Antonio Di Natale (via TUTTOmercatoWEB), the 21-year-old possesses an abundance of quality has been heavily linked with a move to Spurs.

The Times even claimed that Spurs had already held talks over signing Vlahovic this summer, with Italian reporter Bucchioni now suggesting him for Tottenham.

The Latest: Spurs ‘ready to invest’…

Speaking on Vlahovic, Bucchioini has namedropped Tottenham when explaining there are many clubs interested in a forward of his ilk.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-updates/” title=”Tottenham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As well as this, he believes the club’s new managing director of football Fabio Paratici is a big admirer and has been for years, with the Lilywhites also ‘ready to invest’ in that key area.

“Many clubs are ready to invest in a young striker like Vlahovic. I say one: Tottenham,” Bucchioini explains.

“Like the sporting director, there is Paratici who would have gladly taken him for Juve as well.

“Kane wants to leave, he has asked to be sold and who better to take over than Vlahovic?”

The Verdict: Signing of the summer?

Vlahovic has run rampant in the Italian top flight and all of his credentials indicate he would be a fabulous partner or even potential replacement for superstar Harry Kane.

He has also been called ‘incredible’ by Serie A expert and Forza Italian Football chief Conor Clancy (via This is Futbol), but the only speed bump may be his lofty valuation – reported to be around £36 million by Transfermarkt.

It would be a tough transfer but arguably worth the financial risk, given his dominance in a top European league at such a tender age – imagine what’s to come if his 2020/21 exploits were just the early signs of the towering front man’s potential.

Nuno must offload Spurs liability Aurier

Tottenham Hotspur have finally found their new manager, just in time for pre-season.

Nuno Espirito Santo has been appointed on a two-year contract and he begins work next week as he looks to transform the north London outfit’s fortunes following a disappointing 2020/21 campaign.

When he gets into the office vacated by Jose Mourinho since mid-April, he’s likely to be faced with a mountain of problems.

The 47-year-old must get to work on a tactical system and he has to do so with several players missing on international duty. Then there are his likely transfer targets, incoming coaching staff and much, much more to consider.

That’s not to mention the biggest issue of them all, resolving the future of wantaway striker Harry Kane.

It’s also believed that the club are willing to listen to offers for several of their first team stars, in which Serge Aurier is thought to be one, as per the Evening Standard.

If Nuno is to stand a chance at improving the club, then he must look to offload the Ivory Coast right-back as early as possible. He has let Spurs down for years and should play no part in this new era.

Since joining in a £23m deal from Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, Aurier’s time in N17 has been marred by controversy off the pitch and shocking performances on it. For example, the £18m-rated star was fined for breaching the UK government’s lockdown regulations last year for the third time, whilst he’s publicly expressed his desire over leaving the club.

Meanwhile, on the pitch, his performances have often carried the tag of being a “liability.”

After Spurs suffered yet another final defeat, losing to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher slammed the 28-year-old as he said: “Aurier is maybe one of the biggest liabilities in Premier League football and is a player who would possibly put you off management with the amount of crazy decision he makes.”

Similarly, former Spurs midfielder turned talkSPORT pundit Jamie O’Hara dubbed him an “absolute liability” back in May, some two seasons after Darren Bent described him in a similar manner.

Considering that Aurier is also amongst the highest earners at Hotspur Way, reportedly raking in around £120,000 per week, it’s time for Nuno to show no mercy and move him on so that he has one less problem to deal with next season.

Liverpool linked to Mikkel Damsgaard

Liverpool are the latest Premier League side to be linked with a move for Sampdoria winger Mikkel Damsgaard following a string of exceptional performances at Euro 2020.

What’s the story?

The likes of Leicester City, Leeds United and West Ham United have all previously been credited with an interest in the 21-year-old, but the Reds have now joined the race for his signature, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato.

Jurgen Klopp may have to move quickly in order to secure his man, though, with AC Milan already reportedly having a bid turned down for the Denmark international.

New Mohamed Salah

Damsgaard only arrived at Sampdoria from his boyhood side Nordsjaelland 12 months ago via a £6 million deal, yet his impressive performances at this summer’s European Championship means he could be on the move once again.

The youngster bagged two goals and provided one assist for his nation as they reached the semi-finals before succumbing to a solid England side, providing the spark they needed to exceed many people’s expectations.

Although his numbers throughout 2020/21 at club level were relatively modest – scoring two goals and providing four assists in 35 top-flight appearances – some of his performances caught the eye of intrigued onlookers.

After Damsgaard played a crucial role in a shock victory over eventual champions Inter back in January, TV2’s football expert Martin Mikkelsen lauded his compatriot, praising his maturity on the pitch.

“He’s magical – what speed! He is dynamic and can go both ways. He is creative but also so mature in his decisions,” Mikkelsen claimed.

His potential arrival at Anfield would see Damsgaard follow in the footsteps of current Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah, who made the leap from Serie A side Roma to Merseyside four seasons ago.

The Eygpt international has shown just how well making the transition from Italian football to English can go, and director of football Michael Edwards may be tempted to put his faith in the Dane due to this proven track record.

After Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino’s struggles last season, Klopp may be tempted to dip into the transfer market for a new forward over the coming months, and Damsgaard could be an affordable alternative to some of the sports most expensive stars.
