Who is David Brooks? – Profile

Name: David Brooks

Club: AFC Bournemouth

Date of Birth: 8 July 1997

Position: Midfielder, winger

David Brooks – His career so far

David Brooks was born in Warrington, England, and at just the age of seven he was part of Manchester City’s youth academy. Brooks was a City youngster for ten years before joining Sheffield United’s youth academy in 2014. After two years and a brief loan spell at Halifax Town, Brooks broke into the Blades’ first team on 30 August 2016, making his first professional debut against Leicester City U23’s in the EFL Trophy.

Brooks made his first start for Sheffield United just over one month later, in the same competition. Just four days after his first start, Brooks was called up to the senior Wales team, by Chris Coleman, having previously represented England’s U20 team at youth level.

In the summer of 2018, Brooks caught the eye of Premier League side Bournemouth, and joined the Cherries for a £11.5m fee. The youth midfielder made his Premier League debut in the Cherries’ first game of the season, and he scored his first goal for the club in a 2-1 home victory over Crystal Palace soon after.

Unfortunately, Brooks suffered a nasty ankle injury in a pre-season friendly match against Brentford. It was later revealed that this injury would keep him out for almost eight months, and after two operations he returned to full training in March 2020.

Transfer Latest

After facing relegation with Bournemouth at the end of last season, Brooks has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer after the Red Devils hopes of signing Jadon Sancho look to have been shattered.

Player Profile

Brooks is a very versatile footballer – he is able to play as a number ten, as well as on either side of the attacking line. He has a great dribbling ability and is able to use both feet, which makes him a solid all-rounded youngster.

Newcastle United: Craig Hope reveals Martin Dubravka injury

Craig Hope has revealed on his official Twitter page that Martin Dubravka may be out injured for six to eight weeks, according to the coach of Slovakia.

The Daily Mail journalist has confirmed the “huge blow” to Newcastle United, who may also be without strikers Dwight Gayle and Joelinton for the start of the new 2020/21 season.

However, the likely absence of Dubravka at least for the first few games will surely hurt Steve Bruce and the members of the Toon Army.

The goalkeeper was voted as the Tyneside club’s player of the year after a relatively impressive 2019/20 campaign that saw him rack up 11 clean sheets in 39 matches in all competitions, including playing in every single minute of the Premier League term, as per Transfermarkt.

It means that the Magpies will now have to rely on Karl Darlow and Mark Gillespie as the only ‘keeper options available to Bruce, with the latter a new signing from Scottish team Motherwell (via the website) and will surely need time to settle in and adapt to life at St. James’ Park.

Whether this means that the English manager will now go in and try to get another player between the sticks as cover is another question, but the injury to Dubravka has certainly not helped his plans going into the next season.

The 31-year old very much established himself as Bruce’s number one by playing in every minute of the top flight in the last campaign, and by winning the player of the year award, the Slovakian international cemented himself as an important part of the side.

Burnley: Ali Koiki set to leave after rejecting Clarets’ contract offer

Burnley look set to lose talented young defender Ali Koiki after he rejected the offer of a new contract at Turf Moor.

Football Insider reported that the 20-year-old had been offered a contract extension by the Clarets but he has instead decided to leave the club upon the expiry of his existing deal and is set to become a free agent.

According to Football Insider, the left-back was unhappy at never being given a senior debut by Sean Dyche, believing that his performances in the underage ranks had earned him a shot at the first team.

Koiki has indeed enjoyed a superb season for Burnley’s under-23 side, scoring no fewer than 10 goals despite playing as a left-back and reportedly attracting interest from clubs in the Championship and League One as well as abroad, according to Football Insider.

He was named on the bench in a couple of first team fixtures this term but did not make an appearance in either (as per TransferMarkt). Even with Dyche naming several academy prospects among the substitutes for the recent Premier League games at Manchester City and Crystal Palace and not being able to name the maximum permitted complement of nine subs, the 20-year-old was conspicuous by his absence.

With four players leaving the club this week upon expiry of their contracts, Burnley’s senior squad is now down to just 20, seven of whom are either injured or completely out of favour. Somewhat unluckily for Koiki, both of the Clarets’ senior left-backs Charlie Taylor and Erik Pieters are among the precious few players still at the club and available for selection.

While Koiki’s frustration at not getting a chance at first team level is understandable and he feels that a move away is what’s best for his career, it seems a shame that he is set to walk out on Burnley given their depleted numbers at the minute.

Dyche has already had his squad heavily curtailed without letting young talents leave and, in the case of the 20-year-old defender, some of those appear to have plenty of promise given their performances at underage level. Koiki’s departure is one that the Clarets could come to regret.

Burnley fans, are you disappointed that Koiki is leaving or is it a case of ‘good riddance’ seeing as he turned down the club’s offer? Have your say by commenting below!

Tottenham Hotspur: Pundit believes Spurs have a ‘real opportunity’ to seal Champions League spot

Former Spurs star Paul Robinson believes Tottenham have a “real opportunity” to qualify for the Champions League when football resumes in June.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Robinson insists the lack of home advantage could play into Jose Mourinho’s hands as it will make for some “strange results” in the remaining fixtures.

Last week, Harry Kane told the club’s official website that the Lilywhites may need to win eight games from a possible nine to clinch a top-four spot.

Jose Mourinho’s side are currently eighth in the Premier League, seven points away from Frank Lampard’s Chelsea, with Manchester United, Wolves and Sheffield United all in the mix.

However, the pundit feels the fact that games will be played behind closed doors can work to the club’s benefit.

He told football writer Dylan Childs: “They are relying on other teams dropping points but we are in unprecedented times where the home advantage has disappeared. I think we will see some strange results and some results that we were not expecting.

“I am very glad that the league will be played out but I am glad I am not a gambler between now and the end of the season because results will be very hard to predict!

“Tottenham are seven points off Chelsea but there is a real opportunity to close that gap.”

It is hard to argue with Robinson here, as the recent Bundesliga results suggest home advantage has been wiped out without fans being at games.

Indeed, Danny Higginbotham revealed that there were 14 home wins out of 36 games before football was suspended in Germany, whereas there have only been 8 home victories out of 35 games after the nationwide lockdown was lifted (The Sun).

Moreover, Kane, Son Heung-min, Steven Bergwijn and Moussa Sissoko have all recovered from injury and are ready to return. Mourinho has been plagued by injury throughout the season so far and there is no doubt this update will give the Portuguese a major boost.

Stadiums across the country are usually full to the brim with fans but social distancing guidelines mean it won’t be happening anytime soon. Mourinho’s side will likely have to play in neutral venues which will create a level playing field.

Tottenham fans, are you looking forward to seeing Spurs back on the pitch? Let us know down below!

Liverpool’s Yasser Larouci can be Andrew Robertson’s understudy

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In The Pipeline series, which takes a look at some of the most promising young talent either linked with clubs or emerging from their academies…

Andrew Robertson has turned himself into one of the best left-backs around in recent years.

Just two years ago, he was relegated to the Championship with Hull City, but was snapped up by Liverpool for £8m. Since then, he has appeared in two Champions League finals and was a creative force last season, contributing 11 assists in the Premier League. He has also seen his Transfermarkt value rise to £54m.

However, he is currently the only senior natural left-back in the squad. James Milner has played there on occasion, but he is a central midfielder by trade, meaning he is makeshift on that side of the defence.

With the Scotland international now a doubt for the Reds’ next game against Crystal Palace – he has recently stated he has not been training for the last two-and-a-half weeks because of an ankle issue, and he also pulled out of the Tartan Army’s squad for their Euro 2020 qualifiers against Cyprus and Kazakhstan. Milner could step up once again, but he is not a long-term option.

In the future, perhaps Jurgen Klopp can look towards his youth academy and Yasser Larouci in particular. The Algerian 18-year-old is still a novice and has yet to play for Liverpool’s first team, but there is plenty of buzz around the teenager at Anfield.

Larouci moved to Merseyside after having come through Le Havre’s famed academy – a place where the likes of Paul Pogba, Steve Mandanda, Benjamin Mendy, Lassana Diara and Dimitri Payet worked their way through.

Since then, he has appeared for the club’s development sides, making 55 appearances across the various different age groups. He has also tasted his first piece of silverware, as well, winning the FA Youth Cup last season.

His displays at that level clearly caught the eye of Klopp, who took him on his pre-season tour of the USA. He played in five warm-up matches, coming up against the likes of Jadon Sancho. His performance against the winger, in particular, earned him praise from the 52-year-old manager. He said:

“Being good in big spaces and in small spaces makes you a pretty interesting player – and that’s what Jadon is. Yasser [Larouci] our 18-year-old left-back played against one of the biggest talents in world football and did pretty well the whole night.”

He used to be a winger, but Under-18 coach Barry Lewtas told Goal.com: “He was a wide player when he came, but this year [2019] we’ve just wanted to have a look at him at left-back, because we think he has the attributes. He’s got great athleticism, he runs into space well, he carries the ball and he gives us great width.”

Giving he used to play further forward, he should have the same offensive drive as Robertson. Meanwhile, considering the lack of depth at his position in the first-team squad, there is no reason why he can’t be the 25-year-old former Dundee man’s understudy. Not everyone can keep Sancho at bay, after all.

Leeds may be missing Pontus Jansson as their set-piece struggles continue

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

There aren’t many bad things you can say about Leeds United’s defence this season.

Indeed, the Whites have been pretty much impeccable at the back as they’ve conceded just nine goals in 16 league matches this term.

However, their game against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday highlighted one area that they need to improve in, and that may involve getting a different type of defender.

Set-piece troubles

A staggering 44% of the goals conceded by Leeds this season have come from set-pieces. That number may be hard to believe, but it’s true as four of the nine goals they’ve let in have come from dead-ball situations, including Blackburn’s strike on Saturday.

This really is the only time that Leeds’ defensive acumen isn’t in play as these phases are usually just a physical battle between individuals.

That’s the only minor issue you can point at in Leeds’ backline, they simply don’t have a towering centre-back to deal with these issues.

In fact, Leeds’ tallest defender is Liam Cooper standing at 6 foot 2, so it’s clear to see that the Yorkshire outfit don’t really have a towering defender in their armoury.

Someone like Jansson

If only there were a 6 foot 4 centre-half who United could call upon, perhaps a player with enough talent to make it into the Championship Team of the Season.

Of course, we’re alluding to Pontus Jansson, and although Leeds’ defence has been impenetrable at times this season, it’s hard to say that they aren’t missing the Swede in these situations.

Indeed, Jansson has been a defensive juggernaut in the air as he won 4.9 aerial duels per game during his last season at Elland Road. On top of that, he’s won 3.6 in 2019/20.

Now, we’re not suggesting that Leeds should bring the £5.4m-rated Jansson back, but having a taller option at the back, especially when playing as a back three is certainly something that United should look at in January.

With margin for error incredibly tight in this division, it could well be something that ensures they don’t drop off like they did last campaign.

Birmingham fans left undecided over potential transfer for Nahki Wells

Looks like you really can’t please everyone.

According to reports from The Sun on Sunday (Print Edition, Page 61, 3/11), Birmingham City are set to make a run at signing Burnley forward Nahki Wells in the January transfer window.

The report claims that Burnley will be looking for £6m before they are willing to part with the 29-year-old, but when he comes with the goal record that he does of 59 goals in 197 games (via Transfermarkt) it would almost seem like a bit of a no-brainer.

Blues fans, however, were left with mixed feelings when they heard the news that the seven-goal man could arrive.

Some fans were claiming that £6m was far too much to be paying someone with that short a length left on their contract, and of that age.

Whilst others were so desperate to get some help to Lukas Jutkiewicz up top that they were willing to look past all that.

Whilst they may be split now, you imagine that scoring plenty of goals if and when he does come in will be the quickest and easiest way of getting them all on the same side.

Tottenham fans react to latest Jan Vertonghen speculation

According to The Guardian, Tottenham Hotspur have informed Inter Milan that Jan Vertonghen will not be allowed to leave the club in January.

However, the report – written by Fabrizio Romano – claims that Inter will still look to sign the centre-back on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Vertonghen, who has made 294 appearances for Spurs since arriving from Ajax in 2012, will see his current deal expire at the end of the campaign.

The 32-year-old was left out against Liverpool at the weekend, whilst he was also omitted from the first XI at the start of the 2019/20 season.

According to The Guardian, Vertonghen is considering his options, one of which is to leave Tottenham on a free transfer next summer to join Inter.

As expected, a number of the London club’s fans have been on social media offering their views on the latest developments.

And a selection of the Twitter reaction is available to view below:

Leeds director’s quotes make a move for Baghdad Bounedjah far fetched

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

It’s that time of the year again where little transfer tidbits begin circulating about almost every club in the country.

Of course, Leeds United are no different in that regard, and the Whites fanbase will likely have seen the recent reports that their summer transfer target Baghdad Bounedjah will now be available for half of the €15m (£12.9m) fee that was once demanded for his services.

However, the key thing at this time of the year is to separate the true transfer reports away from the nonsense that is published every day.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Unfortunately for the Whites, this report is rather difficult to believe.

Firstly, Leeds simply don’t have the power to spend money in January.

Victor Orta recently stated that permanent deals weren’t feasible because of their financial situation and thus, any paid transfer will likely have to be put on the back burner – especially given Leeds’ £40m wage level.

While they might be able to afford him next summer, rumours of a move in the imminent future are surely wide of the mark.

Meanwhile, the striker had an asking price of the aforementioned value for a reason, and after netting seven goals after five league games this season why on earth would that valuation be cut in half?

It’s not as if Al-Sadd are a poor club that needs the money either.

This is the Qatari team that apparently paid Xavi €10m (£8.65m) a year during his time as a player there.

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, the club’s chairman is a member of the Qatari royal family, so it’s a given that they’re not short on cash.

Find out a how a world-record-holding freestyler got on with the worst football in the world in the video below…

Now, we don’t want to discredit any news outlet, but the fact that the original report came from Algerian outlet Competition isn’t the most encouraging of signs.

Leeds fans should certainly take these rumours with more than a pinch of salt as the factors surrounding the story simply don’t add up.

Orta’s comments are fine evidence of that.
