Jason Puncheon could give Steven Gerrard his ideal replacement for Josh Windass

As per the club’s official website, Josh Windass has left Rangers after two years at the Scottish giants. The 24-year-old made the move to Ibrox back in 2016 after three years at Accrington Stanley, and the attacker certainly produced the goods during his time north of the border to thus earn a £2 million move to Championship side Wigan Athletic at the rear end of the English transfer window.

Thus, Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has lost one of his most influential players, but with the Scottish window open until August 31, he has time to find a replacement, and he could do a lot worse than seek to make an ambitious move for £4.5 million-rated ace Jason Puncheon (as per Transfermarkt).

The Breakdown

Ultimately, while he wasn’t always a favourite of Rangers supporters, there is no doubting that the Light Blues will miss the contributions of 24-year-old Windass, who scored 19 goals and laid on 13 assists for the Gers in his two-year stint at Ibrox.

And while they are hardly ground-breaking figures, 18 goals and eight assists came last season to underline just how integral he was to the Scottish giants in their run to third place last time round – ultimately, he is somebody that needs replacing.

And with Roy Hodgson’s Palace having drafted in the very talented Max Meyer on a free transfer this summer, there’s a chance that Puncheon may not command regular football at Selhurst Park, and as such could be tempted by a move away.

The 32-year-old has been at the London club since making the move from Southampton back in 2014, in which time the winger has gone on to net 16 times and lay on 22 assists in 161 games for the Eagles.

Again, like Windass, they are not hugely impressive figures, but it’s also what Puncheon adds to the rest of the attacking unit that will be of keen interest to Gerrard, as the 32-year-old is excellent from the wide areas and retains the ball particularly well, allowing others to move off of him to create space.

The injury he suffered back at the start of the year, which subsequently kept him out for the rest of the season, is sure to be of concern to any prospective buyer, but given that Puncheon could probably still produce the goods at Premier League level, it would no doubt be an ambitious move to bring him to Ibrox. But one that is certainly worth making.

He’d without doubt be an asset for Gerrard in terms of brining vital quality and experience to the midfield ranks, as well as great versatility in being able to play centrally and indeed out wide, and as such he must seek to make a move for the Palace ace before the August 31 deadline.

Diego Godin would solve a major issue for Jose Mourinho

Manchester United have made an approach to sign Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin according to Sky Sports’ live transfer blog (09/08 11:02).

What’s the story?

Jose Mourinho has been scouring the market for a central defender all summer, with Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Jerome Boateng all linked with a move to Old Trafford.

With the transfer window nearing its end, it appears Ed Woodward is looking at drafting in Diego Godin in a last minute deal.

The 32-year-old has been at Atletico since 2010 and has amassed well over 200 appearances and he has garnered a reputation as a tough no-nonsense hardman that has formed the bedrock of his club’s defence.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”274614″ player=”12034″ title=”Is This The End For Mourinho At Man Utd”]

Late scramble

Manchester United have certainly left it late this summer to sort out the glaring problem in their squad that is their weak central defence.

Jose Mourinho said he was not confident that Ed Woodward would manage to bring anyone in before the end of the window, but if there’s a chance to sign Godin, they should snap him up.

Godin would fill the gap in defence and the Uruguay captain would provide much-needed steeliness and experience for Mourinho.

He is valued at £31.5million on Transfermarkt but with United running out of time, he’s worth every penny if he can solve a major issue and shore up the defence at Old Trafford.

Leeds simply must seek to lure Shane Long to Elland Road this month

Leeds United supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern so far this season after seeing their side make a wonderful start to the 2018/19 Championship campaign.

There was huge amounts of optimism among Leeds fans over the summer following the appointment of Marcelo Bielsa as the club’s new head coach, although the lack of signings in the immediate aftermath was something of a concern to those supporters. Yet the arrivals of Barry Douglas and Patrick Bamford somewhat reignited the positivity, as has their excellent start to the campaign in beating both Stoke City and Derby County, two sides that were tipped for promotion during pre-season.

Thus, there are many delighted and optimistic Leeds fans up and down the country at present, although having seen their side fail to sustain a promotion push in the last two seasons, some are hoping that they will add some more quality to their squad in the final weeks of the loan window.

And there is little doubt that the addition of £6.3 million-rated Premier League outcast Shane Long (as per Transfermarkt) could go some way to enhancing their obvious promotion credentials.

Ultimately, the 31-year-old looks to have fallen even further down the pecking order at Southampton following the summer arrival of Danny Ings, with it arguable that the Republic of Ireland international is now behind the likes of Ings, Charlie Austin, and Manolo Gabbiadini in the striking ranks.

And failing to make Mark Hughes’ matchday squad for their opening league match against Burnley last weekend is the clearest indication yet that Long is going to seriously struggle for regular football this term – regular football that he is more likely to get at Leeds.

The Whites didn’t finish the season as the lowest goal-scorers in the Championship last season, but Kemar Roofe and Pierre-Michel Lasogga were the only men to reach double figures last term to suggest that further reinforcements are probably needed in that department.

And while Bamford’s arrival will go some way to replacing Lasogga, whose loan spell from Hamburg ended at the end of last season, Bielsa may need further options to choose from as the long, hard slog of a Championship campaign begins to rear its head later in the season.

And while Long isn’t necessarily the most prolific of goal-scorers, his record in the Championship over the years is pretty impressive given he has netted 39 goals in 123 appearances at that level, all of which coming during his time at Reading.

Add in the fact that he was part of the Royals team that swept aside everyone in the second tier back in 2006, and the Irishman also has the know-how of getting the job done in winning promotion – something that could be invaluable in a Leeds squad that have got into positions to go up in the last two seasons, only for things to peter out as the season went on.

Thus, making a move for the out-of-favour Southampton striker could go some way to enhancing Leeds’ promotion credentials.

Sanchez could end up losing Tottenham Hotspur place to Alderweireld

Tottenham Hotspur were ridiculed during the summer transfer window for failing to make a single signing.

At the moment, though, Mauricio Pochettino and his men are having the last laugh as they have started off the Premier League season with a winning mentality.

The North London outfit earned a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United on the opening weekend of the campaign, and on Saturday, cruised past Fulham 3-1 at Wembley.

Everything is running smoothly at the moment, but there is one player who may feel slightly concerned about his position – Davinson Sanchez.

Based on his performance against the Cottagers, the defender may find himself losing his place to Toby Alderweireld, who was thought to be on his way out of the club this summer.

Sanchez played alongside Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen as part of a back three, but was substituted in the 63rd minute to make way for midfielder Mousa Dembele.

During his time on the pitch, Sanchez managed to make two clean tackles and blocked two shots, but he was not as present as in matches last season.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”278420″ player=”12034″ title=”Pochettino Has Been Betrayed By Daniel Levy”]

The Colombian made just the once clearance compared to Alderweireld’s four, and he also failed to snatch back possession in his own half.

The fact that Pochettino hauled Sanchez off in the second half suggests that if the team start with a back four in future matches, he will not be included.

Ironically, the man who appeared to be on the way out of Spurs could end up forcing Sanchez from the lineup.

Reiss Nelson to pen new Arsenal deal before moving to Hoffenheim

Arsenal starlet Reiss Nelson is set to sign a new long-term contract with the Gunners before moving on loan to Hoffenheim, according to The Daily Mirror.

What’s the word?

Widely regarded to be one of the finest young assets within Arsenal’s squad, many fans would have hoped to see Reiss Nelson handed first-team opportunities by Unai Emery this term – but that is not going to be the case.

The Daily Mirror states that Nelson will bring an end to a contract saga in North London by signing a new long-term deal with the Gunners before moving on loan to Hoffenheim for the remainder of the season in search of regular first-team action.

Earlier claims suggested that a deal would be permanent, which would have been a major blow to Emery’s side, but a loan move and a new deal could stand as the ideal next step in the development of the 18-year-old.

Emery has high hopes for Nelson and rates him highly but first-team opportunities would be more frequent in the Bundesliga, where the teenager will play under highly-rated boss Julian Nagelsmann.

The right move?

Arsenal fans will have breathed a sigh of relief when it emerged that a deal for Nelson is temporary, not a permanent switch as originally reported, but it could still be a blow to the Gunners and their first-team depth this season.

Nelson played 16 times in Arsene Wenger’s final year in charge last year, including appearances in the Europa League and Premier League, but faced a struggle to secure regular opportunities this term up against the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Danny Welbeck, Alexandre Lacazette, Alex Iwobi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

His ability would have proven to be useful in the cup competitions once again this term and his departure will lead to a decrease in the depth available to Emery, which could become an issue as the season progresses as Arsenal battle on numerous fronts.

Tottenham fans want Davies axed after Watford nightmare

Loads of Tottenham fans have been reacting to the defeat at Watford, and they all agree it’s time for Danny Rose to get his spot back.

There’s no question about it, Ben Davies was sensational last season. The Welsh international grabbed two goals and six assists from the left flank, as Rose missed the majority of the season.

However, a fully fit and firing Rose is one of the league’s best full backs, and fans suspect it may be time for the Englishman to reclaim his throne after Sunday’s horror show.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”288872″ player=”12034″ title=”Rafas Pub Facts Murray The Magician & Desperately Seeking Zaha”]

Davies wasn’t the only one to perform badly in the 2-1 defeat, with goals from Troy Deeney and Craig Cathcart giving the Hornets all three points, but the Welshman is taking loads of flak on Twitter.

Davies attempted six crosses, none of which were successful, and was one of only two outfield players to start the match for Spurs and not win a tackle, the other being Harry Kane.

Rose wasn’t perfect on his return to action against Manchester United either, but fans are furious with Davies’ Watford display, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

After latest blow January move makes sense for Liverpool youngster

Liverpool have had a pretty superb start to the season as the Reds have taken the positivity from their summer transfer dealings into the first four games of the season and so far look incredibly good.

Possessing one of the best starting XI’s in the league, Klopp is now armed with the best squad the club have had in years.

The trio of Firmino, Mane and Salah have the ability to open up any side in Europe, the only worry is whether Klopp can keep them fit. If the any one of the trio gets injured, Klopp needs a player who can step in and contribute to the side.

After his starring role in England’s Under-17 World Cup winning side, Rhian Brewster was expected to get a chance in the first-team this season but thanks to an ankle injury, he has been forced to sit on the sidelines.

The youngster has had a further setback according to the Mirror and with that in mind, Klopp needs to consider sending the young forward out on loan in January.

The Breakdown

A prolific scorer for the England under-17 squad, Brewster was the top scorer during the side’s successful campaign in 2017 and had attracted interest from Borussia Monchengladbach before signing a new long-term deal for Liverpool.

Had it not been for his most recent setback, the youngster would’ve likely featured for the club this season but now Klopp must look to loan him out in January in order to gain some first-team experience.

Leeds fans react as Mateusz Klich turns out for Poland

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich started for Poland in their 1-1 draw with Italy in the UEFA Nations League on Friday night.

Klich was selected in the middle of the park, and played 55 minutes for a Poland team that took the lead in the first half before Chelsea midfielder Jorginho levelled for Italy late on.

The 6ft ace has been outstanding for Leeds in the early stages of the 2018-19 campaign, scoring three times in six Championship appearances.

The 28-year-old struggled at Leeds last term following a move from FC Twente, and ended the campaign on loan with FC Utretcht.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”290059″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch The FFC Accy Show Put the international break to good use”]

The Pole returned to Elland Road this summer, however, and has played a key role in Marcelo Bielsa’s team storming to the top of the Championship table.

Leeds fans reacted to Ezgjan Alioski’s strike for Macedonia on Thursday night, and have now taken to social media to hail Klich for his positive performance against Italy.

Unbeatable: This should be Liverpool’s lethal starting XI under Klopp in 5 years time

Liverpool’s team is impressing at the moment, and that’s no surprise. Jurgen Klopp has built a tremendous team with a fantastic mix of defence and attack and youth and experience, and that bodes well for their title hopes this season. However, what should really worry rivals is the potential team that Jurgen Klopp could call on in a few years.

Not only is Liverpool’s squad fantastic, there is also more young players than many other teams, meaning that the Reds are only going to get better for the next few years at the very least.

Sure, in five years time, some of Liverpool’s current crop of players may be past their best, but there are a few on the production line and that means that Klopp always has someone new to turn to. Indeed, you could even argue that Liverpool’s potential team in five years is even better than the one available to him right now.

But what could that team potentially look like?

Fortunately, between the sticks, Liverpool shouldn’t have anything to worry about for the next few years. Alisson has come in and has, for the most part, looked pretty good. It’s important to note that he’s just 25-years-old, and so he’s going to continue developing for the next 3 or 4 years at least, and only then will he be at his peak. The prospect of him getting even better is a wonderful one for Liverpool.

In the defence, Klopp has curated a young quartet, and provided that everything goes well, they could still be around in 5 years. Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold will be 29 and 24 respectively, and that means that they’ll both be enjoying the best periods in their careers. For Liverpool, then, that’s not an area that they need to worry about. Joe Gomez has emerged as a great option this season, and at 26-years-old in five years, his best years are ahead of him, too. Virgil van Dijk would be a senior member of the defence at 32-years-old, but that hasn’t stopped the likes of John Terry and others over the years. He’s fit and healthy, and so he will bring some much-needed experience.

In the midfield, new duo Naby Keita and Fabinho have been brought in with an eye to the future, and you’d expect Klopp to build the team around them going forward. They could be joined by Roberto Firmino. Firmino is now a forward, but he’ll be 31-years-old in five years, and so by that point, he may be more suited to a deeper role, like Wayne Rooney at Man Utd. His passing range and technique make him a prime candidate for this position anyway, and so it could be a perfect fit.

Liverpool fans will be hoping that Mohamed Salah is still at the club in 5 years, given how good he is, and he’ll no doubt be continuing to fire at 31-years-old. He’s got tremendous technical ability which should help counteract any loss in pace. Sadio Mane, meanwhile, is so heavily reliant on his pace that he may not be so fortunate. He may lose that and lose a part of his game as a result. In Ben Woodburn, though, Liverpool would have a perfect solution. He’s still a teenager, and he’s impressed for club and country in recent years.

Leading the line could be young Rhian Brewster. Brewster is undoubtedly one of Europe’s brightest young talents, and he has made headlines over the years for his lethal goalscoring ability. If he continues to develop, he’s a surefire Liverpool star.

Sky Sports pundit criticises West Ham’s deal for Jack Wilshere

West Ham made a pretty poor start to the season as they slumped to four defeats in their first four league games of the season but following the international break, the Hammers beat Everton and most recently held Man U to a draw.

Over the summer, West Ham spent heavily as they looked to rejuvenate a squad that underachieved massively last year. The east London club broke their transfer record twice in the transfer window and also signed free agent Jack Wilshere.

The former Arsenal man missed the club’s last two games and coincidentally the Hammers looked much better as Manuel Pellegrini opted to use a 4-3-3 formation. With Declan Rice at the base, and Pedro Obiang and Mark Noble either side of him, the young midfielder was given adequate protection and provided the team with a strong base to attack from.

Following the draw, Sky Sport’s pundit, Tony Cascarino spoke of his surprise at West Ham for signing Jack Wilshere and labelled him as a “vanity signing”.

The Breakdown

Although West Ham have improved over the last two games, it’s still too early to say that the Hammers have turned the corner. Moreover, it’s unfair to criticise Wilshere when for most of the early part of the season he was not only playing in a team whereby Manuel Pellegrini hadn’t discovered his best XI but also out of a position.

While it remains to be seen where Wilshere will be played in the future, it’s too early to write him off just because West Ham have finally managed to pick up some points.
