Mohsin Naqvi has announced that the redevelopment is “in its final stages and the last touches are being applied”

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has announced that the redevelopment of the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore is “in its final stages”. At a press conference held within the ground itself, Naqvi praised everyone involved in the construction of the stadium, saying it had been completed in record time.”The Gaddafi Stadium will be inaugurated on 7 February by the Prime Minister [Shehbaz Sharif],” Naqvi said. “It’s in its final stages and the last touches are being applied to it. It will definitely be completed by 7 February. We had begun demolishing this stadium in September, with the construction beginning in October. We promised it would be ready by the end of January, and you can all see how close it is to completion.”Related

Naqvi said the National Stadium in Karachi, also undergoing significant renovation ahead of the Champions Trophy, was also on track. It is scheduled to be inaugurated in a ceremony on February 11 by Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, on the eve of the first game it is scheduled to host – a tri-series match on February 12.Pakistan are also hosting an opening ceremony on February 16 February in Lahore, though it will not include a captains’ call and photoshoot, which the PCB put down to logistical issues. Naqvi said the PCB had invited ICC chairman Jay Shah to the event, as well as the heads of all cricket boards involved in the event.”We are also holding a ceremony on the 16th of February in Lahore. We’ve invited the heads of all cricket boards of teams who are coming, as well as all ICC officials, including the ICC chairman Jay Shah. We are eager to welcome the board officials and anyone else who is attending.”The PCB has faced extreme scrutiny over the last few months concerning the fitness of its stadiums to host the tournament. With renovation and reconstruction work on the venues left to the last few months, there were concerns about whether the PCB would manage to bring its stadiums to a state of readiness in time for the tournament. The PCB had initially set a January 25 deadline for all development of the Gaddafi Stadium to be completed, before pushing it forward to February 2.Naqvi took aim at those who had raised doubts. “Across the border [a reference to India], there are many people who are trying to find the tiniest flaw in our stadiums and arrangements, and they will get no such opportunity. We will welcome all the arriving teams and their security and welcome arrangements. The whole of the PCB is working day and night to provide a seamless tournament.”Naqvi, who has been unapologetic about the rate of spend at the PCB since he assumed the post, also offered a first glimpse of the potential financial toll the work on the stadiums had taken, announcing the PCB had sold the tickets allocated to it by the ICC back to the governing council to go some way towards making up the costs of developing its grounds. The Champions Trophy, which is set to begin on February 19, is the first ICC tournament Pakistan will host since 1996.

Vou a muitos jogos e normalmente me sinto seguro.

IPL begins March 21 weekend; WPL to start from February 7

Eden Gardens will host the tournament opener as well as the final, on May 25•BCCI

IPL 2025 is set to start on March 21 with Eden Gardens hosting both the season opener and the final on May 25. It is also understood that WPL 2025 will be held between February 7 and March 2.Ahead of the mega auction in November, the IPL had shared with the franchises the windows for the next three seasons (2025-27). For 2025, the window was between March 15 and May 25. However, with the 2025 Champions Trophy final scheduled for March 9, the IPL decided to keep close to a two-week gap between the tournaments. The full IPL schedule is expected to be out later this month. As has generally been the case, the home venue of the defending champions will host the opener and final. This season it’s Eden Gardens, home base of Kolkata Knight Riders who won IPL 2024. While Eden Gardens will also host Qualifier 2, the first two playoff matches – Qualifier 1 and Eliminator – will be played in Hyderabad. The 2025 season will comprise 74 matches, the same as the last three seasons – ten fewer than the 84 games a season listed by the IPL in 2022, when media rights for the 2023-27 cycle were sold. In the tender document for the new rights cycle, the IPL had listed a varying number of matches per season: from 74 games in 2023 and 2024, 84 in 2025 and 2026, and a maximum of 94 games for the final year of the deal in 2027. Four venues shortlisted for WPL The BCCI has also added two new venues for the WPL. Along with Mumbai and Bengaluru, Baroda and Lucknow will also host WPL games this year. The exact number of matches at each venue is not yet known as the WPL schedule is not yet out for the season scheduled to begin on February 7.

Amazing Eze repeat: Arsenal discussing late move for £45m "monster"

Arsenal may well have romped to a 5-0 win over Leeds United on Saturday evening, marquee summer signing Viktor Gyokeres scoring twice, but arguably, the spotlight was taken away from that performance.

Why? Well, before a ball was kicked at the Emirates Stadium, Eberechi Eze was formally announced as a new Arsenal player.

Eze walked down the tunnel and stepped onto the turf, donning his new shirt which read Eze 10.

What a moment, what a signing this is, not least because of the quality Eze possesses but the circumstances in which a deal happened.

In midweek, it looked as though the England international was destined to sign for Spurs. A fee had been agreed and once Crystal Palace’s Conference League tie had taken place, he was set to head to north London.

Eze did indeed head to north London but it was Arsenal he signed for instead. The Athletic reveal that a phone call between the playmaker and Mikel Arteta on Wednesday turned the tide and by the evening, everything had been sewn up.

So, what’s next, if anything for the Gunners?

With the Eze deal sewn up, attention will turn to player exits at the Emirates. Before the window slams shut on 1st September a whole wave of players could be heading for the exit door.

Polish defender Jakub Kiwior continues to be linked with a move away, as does Reiss Nelson. You sense they are two of the most expendable assets right now.

If Kiwior does leave, then reports suggest a replacement could be brought in.

That’s according to club insider Hand of Arsenal, who reported on Saturday that Kiwior is still “insisting” on leaving the club behind.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

As a result, discussions have been held behind the scenes about signing Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi in a late deal.

That being said, Guehi has reservations about moving to Arsenal given he’d have to compete with William Saliba and Gabriel for a place in the team. Not ideal in a World Cup year, it must be said.

Crystal Palace'sMarcGuehilooks dejected.

Liverpool have been leading the race for Guehi’s signature this summer with a deal mooted at around £45m.

An amazing Eze repeat

Have you ever seen a deal unite the fanbase more than Eze? We’re struggling to think of many examples, such is the rarity of the event, but Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are perhaps two examples that spring to mind.

So, why is there so much fuss? Well, back when he was just 13, Eze was released by Arsenal, a moment that left him in tears as he struggled to train.

This is a comeback story, it’s a tale of redemption, a character arc we very rarely see in football. Eze has gone away, done the hard yards via the likes of QPR and Wycombe Wanderers. His dream, however, is now fulfilled. He always wanted Arsenal. This move was a no-brainer.

The obvious emotional connection is a big factor here but plainly, the attacker is a phenomental talent. Like the Declan Rice move two years ago, he’s proven Premier League quality. As Gary Neville once said, “this was the banker”.

While success is never guranteed in life, it’s hard to see a world where Eze isn’t a rip-roaring success. Just last season, he was on fire in an Eagles shirt, scoring 14 and assisting 11 in all competitions.

Club allegiances aside, acquiring Guehi would be a very similar signing. Not just would the Gunners be hijacking Liverpool’s bid for the defender but he’s a Premier League-proven star, someone who would be nothing but a success.

Starring alongside Eze for a number of years now, Guehi was notably described as “England’s best player” by some at the European Championships last summer and since then he’s only gone from strength to strength.

Dubbed a “monster in defence” by Palace reporter Bobby Manzi, the centre-back is a natural leader having captained the side to duel FA Cup and Community Shield wins in recent months.

CrystalPalace's Marc Guehi lifts the trophy as hecelebrates with teammates after winning the FA Community Shield

It’s rare an opportunity comes along to sign an established England international but in the space of just a few days here, Arsenal could spring a surprise and grab two of them.

If the Rice move two years ago was mega, then getting deals across the line for Eze and Guehi would be quite something.

One might argue that Arsenal don’t necessarily need a new defender. We hear that view point. The Gunners have added Cristhian Mosquera to their ranks over the summer. He looks like the perfect combination of Gabriel and Saliba.

However, if Kiwior does go, Arteta knows he needs a big squad after an injury riddled 2024/25. Guehi would be the perfect signing, sealed in Eze-esque fashion. How about that?

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are set to announce their captain for IPL 2025 on Thursday in Bengaluru. The name of the new captain could not be confirmed, but the frontrunner for the position is likely to be Virat Kohli, who had led the franchise from 2013 to 2021 before stepping down from the role. He had also stood in as captain for three matches in IPL 2023.Another option is middle-order batter Rajat Patidar, who has been with RCB since 2021 and was one of their three retained players ahead of the mega auction in November. Patidar, 31, was captain of his state team Madhya Pradesh in the 2024-25 seasons of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy.RCB need a new captain after not retaining Faf du Plessis, who led them for three years from 2022 to 2024. They did not bid for du Plessis, 40, at the auction and he was sold to Delhi Capitals at base price.Du Plessis in turn had taken over the captaincy from Kohli, who ended his nine-season stint as RCB captain in 2021. To date, Kohli has led RCB in 143 matches in the IPL, the second highest for a captain after MS Dhoni. His record stands at 68 wins and 71 losses with four no-results. While RCB are yet to win the IPL, Kohli led them to the final in 2016, a season in which he scored a record 973 runs. He was the top-scorer in IPL 2024 too; his 741 runs at a strike rate of 154.69 playing an important role in RCB’s late dash into the playoffs where they lost the Eliminator.Apart from RCB, Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals are the other teams yet to name their captains for the upcoming season. Shreyas Iyer, KKR’s captain last year, will lead Punjab Kings this year, while the former DC captain Rishabh Pant is now leading Lucknow Super Giants.

Sold by Marinakis: £5m Nottingham Forest man is now more prolific than Wood

Nottingham Forest have made an indifferent start to the 2025/26 campaign. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men have just four points to their name so far, and have struggled since their opening day victory over Brentford, in which they thrashed Keith Andrews’ side 3-1 at the City Ground.

Since then, the men in Garibaldi Red have picked up just one point, which was a resilient draw away to Crystal Palace. Their most recent outing saw them lose 3-0 at home against the struggling West Ham United, a result which surprised some, given Forest’s result at home on the opening day.

Nottingham Forest managerNunoEspirito Santo reacts at the end of the match

Perhaps the lack of goals in their last two games has coincided with one thing in particular: Chris Wood’s short drought in front of goal.

Chris Wood’s start to the season

Drought is a harsh word to use when discussing Wood’s recent form. The New Zealand international scored a brace in Forest’s season opener against the Bees, but did not find the back of the net in the next two outings, which saw his club score once, thanks to Callum Hudson-Odoi.

His first goal was a resilient finish, winning the second ball from a corner after missing the initial header and poking home inside a packed penalty box.

His second goal was sublime, teed up by an exquisite first-time ball through the lines from Elliot Anderson. Wood ran onto it, rounded the goalkeeper and scored.

Of course, it is no surprise to see Wood on the scoresheet already for Nuno’s side this term. His record in Garibaldi Red is excellent, with 38 goals and four assists in just 85 appearances. Last season was his best in the Premier League, with 20 goals across the campaign.

That form earned him a place in the PFA Team of the Year, in a frontline alongside new Liverpool duo Alexander Isak and Mohamed Salah. Wood’s campaign in 2024/25 and his form for Forest across his career have both been exceptional.

However, Forest sold a striker back in July 2023 who has enjoyed an even more successful time than Wood.

The ex-Forest star who can’t stop scoring

The past few years under their current owner, Evangelos Marinakis, have seen Forest spend significant amounts on transfer fees. However, that has meant they have needed plenty of sales to help balance the books. Departures such as Brennan Johnson to Tottenham Hotspur and Anthony Elanga to Newcastle United are the notable exits.

Yet, someone who left the City Ground for only £5m just over two years ago may have slipped under the radar since his departure.

The man in question here is Sam Surridge, a key figure in their promotion success. He has been on fire for Nashville in the MLS since his departure.

More on those numbers in a moment, but first, it’s important to highlight the Slough-born star’s contribution for Forest.

Once described as a “sensational” striker and “one of the best finishers in the Championship” by Garry Birtles, Surridge scored 11 goals in 50 appearances, including a hat-trick against Swansea City and one in the Premier League, against Bournemouth.

Looking at his form since his £5m move stateside, Surridge has been largely unstoppable. He’s bagged more goals than Wood has managed as a Forest player, with 42 strikes in Nashville yellow, in just 77 appearances, four clear of the Kiwi.

His best campaign for the club has been the most recent season. He’s bagged 20 MLS goals in just 29 games, which is the second time he has hit double figures in the competition since he joined the club two summers ago.

The 27-year-old has been in scintillating form for the Coyotes in his two-year spell so far with the club, and is showing no signs of slowing down. As per the official MLS website, he currently leads the race for the Golden Boot by one goal, ahead of the legendary Lionel Messi.

Looking back on this sale, perhaps it is one Forest fans wish the club had never made. If Surridge had stayed at the City Ground, maybe he would have hit this vein of form and been competing with Wood for a starting spot.
