Man Utd now monitoring record-breaking striker prospect who will cost £25m

Manchester United could still conduct transfer business this month, as they are monitoring a record-breaking forward who is also being eyed by Liverpool, according to a recent report.

Man Utd transfer news

Ruben Amorim will have known this transfer window was going to be difficult for him to bring in new players, and while that remains the case, the Portuguese may hold some small hope that he can at least get one new player through the door before February 3rd.

Ruben Amorim is keen on signing a young player who has already been on Man United’s radar.

Despite money being tight at Old Trafford, the Red Devils continue to be linked with potential new arrivals either for this month or for the summer transfer window. One player who has emerged on their radar in recent days is forward Nene Dorgeles, who plays for Austrian side RB Salzburg.

Fabrizio Romano states that United are monitoring the attacker, and he is among their list of options for either this transfer window or the summer. Romano goes on to add that initial talks have been held to get an understanding of the price and the overall package.

As well as looking at Dorgeles, United are also among the teams interested in signing goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. The 22-year-old might be a player United fans are aware of, as he was close to joining the Premier League side in 2023 but decided against it as he didn’t want to be back-up to Andre Onana.

Suzuki has since joined Parma and has continued to impress so much that United are again looking into a possible deal for the player, who could cost as much as £40 million.

The transfer links don’t stop there for the Red Devils, as according to TBR Football, Manchester United are monitoring FC Nurnberg’s Stefanos Tzimas after learning he is open to a move to the Premier League.

It’s reported that United, along with West Ham, Newcastle, Tottenham, Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Brighton, are all keeping a close eye on his progress in Germany. United’s arch rivals Liverpool may be considered ahead in the race as they have made an approach for the forward.

The 19-year-old is on loan at Nurnberg from POAK, but the German side have the option to make the move permanent for £15 million in the summer. They are expected to trigger that option and then look to sell him for £25 million after his exploits this season.

Tzimas is already a record-breaker at the young age of 19, as when he scored for PAOK back in March 2023, he became the youngest goalscorer in their history at the age of 17. The Red Devils are in the market for a new centre forward, with Amorim ideally wanting to bring in one this month.

Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have struggled in front of goal before and during Amorim’s reign, and if that doesn’t change before the end of the campaign, one or both could leave, and Tzimas could be seen as a potential long-term replacement. The concern for United fans would be that it is another unproven player in English football, and again, it is a striker who is very young, when they are crying out for a more proven, experienced striker.

England look to bounce back as Kohli, Bumrah and Pant return for India

No expectation of wholesale changes for England despite their malfunction at the Ageas Bowl

Andrew Miller08-Jul-20221:45

Was this a display of India’s new approach in T20Is?

Big picturePity the poor put-upon ground staff at Edgbaston. Barely four days have elapsed since they were watering down the wicket at the end of England’s thrilling chase in the long-delayed fifth Test – and here we are again, back to Brum as the England-India one-day roadshow gathers pace. What’s more, the change of livery around the stadium has happened not once this week, but twice, following Thursday’s shoehorned quarter-final in the Vitality Blast (although, for all the efforts that they went to ensure a home tie, Birmingham Bears are entitled to wish they hadn’t bothered). For some of India’s biggest guns, however, there may have been a sense of confusing continuity as they remained billeted in the city after the deflating end to that Test, watching the manic scenes unfold around them in the stadium, and waiting for their white-ball colleagues to swing back and link up with them in the Midlands.Related

In India's gauntlet match, Kohli must hit the right gears to stay in the fight

Buttler's challenge is to find his own voice, and continue England's evolution

Throwback Thursday provides thrilling peek into Hardik 2.0

Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah will have had plenty to ponder in the interim; wondering, on the one hand, how that fifth Test got away from them – and with it India’s first series win in England since 2007 – as England’s remarkable cruise to a record 378-run chase provided tangible evidence that their “Bazball” mentality could be here for a long time, as well as self-evidently a good time. And talking of rebooted approaches to batting, there was a clear sense too at the Ageas Bowl – as a line-up comprised mainly of understudies romped to an emphatic 50-run win in Thursday’s first T20I – that, given half a chance, a new philosophy could be set to take hold of India’s white-ball game. A determination to get on with it from the get-go, to treat wickets in hand as “resources”, and to value distance travelled over time spent – all of these are arguably new traits for a team that has rarely struggled to boss their bilateral series in recent times, as shown by their current run of 17 wins in 19 completed T20Is, but whose inherent reticence was dramatically shown up at the last T20 World Cup, and before that at the 2019 ODI World Cup too.By contrast, reticence is not an accusation that can often be pinned on England’s white-ball dashers. If anything, their default setting since 2015 has been to go “too far”, as Brendon McCullum recently said of his new-look Test team, with the thrill of some truly spectacular scoring feats offset by the knowledge that, on certain days, against certain bowlers, and in certain conditions, they are liable to come an equally spectacular cropper. That, however, wasn’t really what happened at the Ageas Bowl. It was an unusually slow puncture of a batting display, especially given England’s known love of a chase. They seemed unduly shocked by Jos Buttler’s first-baller – quite the comedown from his Netherlands trouncings, and on his first day as England’s official captain too. Bhuvneshwar Kumar in particular was magnificent, Jason Roy was quite unable to send it in his usual fashion, and at 33 for 4 from the first ball after the powerplay, there was no coming back.A response, however, does seem inevitable. For all that Buttler now has four ducks in his last seven innings as captain, his incredible form at the IPL guarantees lasting respect from his Indian opponents, as well as an expectation that, if he gets in, he’ll get going. And it won’t be often that he and Liam Livingstone contribute not a single run between them. That said, the smarts with which Hardik Pandya skinned England’s top order goes to show the enviable variety in India’s attack, and with Bumrah returning to lead the line, their quality is set to go up a notch at Edgbaston too. There is plenty at stake for Virat Kohli is the upcoming games•BCCI

Form guideEngland LLWLW (last five completed T20Is, most recent first)
India WWWWWIn the spotlightEveryone’s got a theory or ten about Virat Kohli. Michael Vaughan, for instance, reckons he needs to go and chill on a beach for three months, but to watch the manic way in which he was revving up his team in the field during the Edgbaston Test, there doesn’t seem to be a lot lacking from the competitive side of his game. In terms of output, however, he’s in an undeniably fallow period, and an unusually vulnerable one when it comes to his T20 game. His returns in the IPL were underwhelming by every relevant metric – 341 runs in 16 matches at an average of 22.73 and strike rate of 115.98, with just two fifties. His outstanding record across formats in Australia means he remains a shoo-in for the next T20 World Cup, but at a time when his Fab Four contemporaries are starting to feel squeezed out of their own team’s T20I plans, Kohli will appreciate there’s plenty at stake in these coming games. It was confirmed earlier this week that Moeen Ali is coming back to Edgbaston on a full-time basis from next season, after signing a three-year deal with Warwickshire (nominally white-ball-only, but thanks to the thrill of Bazball, he has hinted his Test retirement may yet be rescinded). This, then, is a chance for an early reacquaintance with his home crowd – although he may be mindful too of the last time he faced India at Edgbaston, in a T20I in 2014, when he was booed by a section of fans due to his Anglo-Pakistani heritage. Such matters are back in the spotlight this week, following the racially motivated incidents during the Test match that have led to a criminal investigation from West Midlands Police, with undercover “spotters” being deployed in the stands on Saturday. Personally speaking, however, Moeen should be in the form and the frame of mind to let his cricket flourish this weekend – following two timely wickets and a short but powerful cameo of 36 from 20 in England’s otherwise flaccid innings at the Ageas Bowl.Team newsNo expectation of wholesale changes for England despite their malfunction at the Ageas Bowl, although two bowling tweaks are anticipated. Both Tymal Mills and Reece Topley are expected to be rotated out of the line-up after their exertions on Thursday, with David Willey – whose absence from the first game was telegraphed by his release to play (and win) for Yorkshire in their Vitality Blast quarter-final at The Oval on Wednesday – likely to slot back in as the fourth left-arm seamer of the series. Alongside him, we could see an international debut for Lancashire’s 34-year-old Richard Gleeson, which would complete one of the more remarkable rags to riches tales on the county circuit.England (probable): 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jos Buttler (capt & wk), 3 Dawid Malan, 4 Moeen Ali, 5 Liam Livingstone, 6 Harry Brook, 7 Sam Curran, 8 Chris Jordan, 9 David Willey, 10 Richard Gleeson, 11 Matt ParkinsonIt won’t be often that Jos Buttler (above) and Liam Livingstone contribute not a single run between them•Getty Images

India, by contrast, are expected to make all manner of changes to their winning line-up – in spite of how impressively their Ageas Bowl line-up met the full-throttle tempo expected of modern T20 line-ups. Neither Deepak Hooda nor Suryakumar Yadav deserves to be benched following their pitch-perfect cameos at Nos. 3 and 4, but one, or both, is bound to make way for the returning Kohli, and conceivably Iyer too. Dinesh Karthik unleashed some lusty late blows on his return to the fray, but Pant’s 203 runs in the Edgbaston Test conceivably trump his impact. That or India may sacrifice a top-order batter to keep both wicketkeepers in the XI. Meanwhile, Axar Patel cedes his spinning allrounder’s berth to the mighty Jadeja. Similarly, Arshdeep Singh let no one down on debut, but Bumrah is waiting in the wings. Rahul Dravid is set to take over as coach once more, after VVS Laxman oversaw the opening match.India (probable): 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Ishan Kishan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Suryakumar Yadav / Deepak Hooda / Shreyas Iyer, 5 Rishabh Pant (wk), 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Harshal Patel, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Yuzvendra Chahal, 11 Jasprit BumrahPitch and conditionsEdgbaston has hosted an absolute ton of cricket recently. There have been five bat-first wins out of eight in the Blast this season, where scores batting first have ranged from 101 all out to 228 for 8. Warm, clear weather is anticipated for the duration of the match.Stats and Trivia Despite his fallow run of form, Kohli’s recent T20I form against England has been impressive. In the 2021 home series, he made scores of 73* (49), 77* (46), and 80* (52) in three of the last four matches. Chris Jordan’s two wickets in the first T20I enabled him to overtake Adil Rashid and become England’s top wicket-taker in T20Is, with 82. Roy needs 50 more runs to reach 1500 in T20Is for England. Hardik needs three more wickets to reach 50 in T20Is for India. England has won each of the three previous T20Is it has contested at Edgbaston, against South Africa in 2012, India in 2014 and Australia in 2018 The Edgbaston T20I will be shown live on the BBC in the UK, one of two free-to-air England men’s fixtures per season under the new ECB rights deal. Quotes”Not really, to be honest. I think there’s a lot of guys in that team who you know are going to be aggressive and that’s how T20 cricket is played. Everyone has been evolving that style and there’s certainly nobody that I can see over time who thinks it’s a better idea to play more cautiously, so I expect all teams to be positive.”
“That’s something Team India is looking at: the way we bat between [overs] 7 and 15. We’re making a conscious effort to put pressure on the bowlers – to try and think of risk as a positive option, not a positive one. It’s one thing trying to have the intent but being consistent with that requires a lot of skill, and the boys are showing it.”

Beale wanted him: Rangers could sign Cerny 2.0 with "exciting" January move

The January transfer window has officially been open for business for almost two weeks and Glasgow Rangers are yet to make a move to bolster their playing squad.

It has hard to hide away from the need for the Gers to improve Philippe Clement’s options on the pitch, given how far behind their rivals they are in the Scottish Premiership table.

The Light Blues are already 15 points behind Celtic in the division and lost to their Glasgow rivals on penalties at Hampden Park in the final of the League Cup last month.

Clement and technical director Nils Koppen are reportedly looking to add a new centre-back to the club, amid injuries to Leon Balogun, John Souttar, and Dujon Sterling, among others.

Burnley defender Hjalmar Ekdal is one of the reported targets on the radar for Rangers, but the Scottish giants could also benefit from adding more attacking options to the group before the end of the January transfer window.

The Gers currently have Vaclav Cerny on loan from Wolfsburg and they have to start thinking about what life may look like after his return to Germany at the end of the season.

Vaclav Cerny's form for Rangers this season

Rangers only signed the Czechia international on loan from the Bundesliga side and there is no option to make the deal permanent at this moment in time, which means that the forward is only due to be at Ibrox until the summer.

His return to Wolfsburg will be a big blow for the Gers ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, provided they do not manage to bring him back for a second spell, because he has been a huge player for Clement this term.

The left-footed whiz has racked up 12 goals and seven assists in 32 appearances in all competitions for the Scottish giants, including three goals and two assists in six outings in the Europa League.

These statistics show that the Czechia forward has the quality to provide a threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals on the right flank, cutting in on his left foot to devastating effect.

As you can see in the table above, Cerny has produced plenty of quality at the top end of the pitch in the Premiership for the Light Blues, with 14 goals and ‘big chances’ created combined in 20 appearances in the division.

These statistics illustrate how big of a blow it is going to be when the 27-year-old star moves on from Ibrox at the end of the season, which is why the Gers must be attentive to the market to see if there is an opportunity to find his long-term replacement.

With this in mind, Clement and Koppen must reignite the club’s interest in Plymouth Argyle winger Morgan Whittaker, who has the potential to be Cerny 2.0 for the Light Blues.

Rangers' long-standing interest in Morgan Whittaker

The Gers have not been linked with an interest in the English attacker but they have been credited with wanting the forward in numerous windows in the past.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

They reportedly had an offer of £2m turned down by Swansea in the January transfer window at the start of 2023, two years ago this month, before Michael Beale reignited that interest in the summer, only for Plymouth Argyle to sign him on a permanent deal ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

It was then reported last summer, in 2024, that Rangers wanted to sign the forward from the Pilgrims and that they were preparing a swoop for the left-footed dynamo to bolster Clement’s squad.

Journalist Alex Crook recently revealed that Championship sides Hull City and Burnley have both had bids turned down by Plymouth for the winger, although it remains to be seen how much they want for his services.

With interest in Whittaker seemingly hotting up, Clement must reignite the club’s long-standing desire to sign the English star this month, instead of missing out on him yet again.

Why Rangers should sign Morgan Whittaker

Some may look at his form in the current season and question why the Gers should splash the cash to bring him to Ibrox, as he has struggled at times in front of goal.

Whittaker has scored three goals and provided one assist in 18 appearances in the Championship this term, which is far from an impressive return at the top end of the pitch, albeit he did also score in a 1-0 win over Premier League side Brentford in the FA Cup at the weekend.

However, he is playing in a struggling Plymouth side that are currently bottom of the Championship, with just four wins, and that is why it has been difficult for him to thrive.

Rangers should, instead, look to his form from the 2023/24 campaign, as part of a Plymouth team that avoided relegation to League One, to see the kind of quality that he could produce on the right flank for the Gers as their eventual replacement for Cerny.

As you can see in the table above, the 24-year-old sensation provided consistent quality in the final third as both a scorer and a creator of goals, just as Cerny has for the Gers so far this season.

Whittaker, who was hailed as “exciting” by his former boss Steven Schumacher, has the ability to cut in on his left foot from the right to score goals consistently, as shown by his form last term, and can create ‘big chances’ for his teammates to find the back of the net.

Rangers could, therefore, sign him to be the long-term replacement for the Czechia international by signing him this month and giving him five months to settle in and learn from Cerny, before aiming to become a star for Clement in the 2025/26 campaign and beyond.

Rangers will be active in the January transfer window

It is now down to Koppen to make a move for Whittaker and to agree a fee with Plymouth to bring the winger to Ibrox before the end of the January transfer window.

Tom Lawes stirs Surrey ambition as uncertainty stalks the land

Kent buckle down in pursuit of survival and who-knows-what-else come season’s end

Paul Edwards28-Jun-2022

Surrey debutant Tom Lawes claimed a four-for•Getty Images

Towards the back of what will always be known as the Peter May Stand at the Kia Oval a small encampment has been created. There is a canopied seating area with open sides and you might call the thing a gazebo if that description did not sound incongruous in an urban setting of concrete and glass. And one hesitates to dub the place a redoubt before checking the definition and finding the following: “a temporary or supplementary fortification, typically square or polygonal and without flanking defences”. That sounds better, not least because those sitting under the canvas clearly have something to defend. “No City Franchises – Save Our Cricket” declares one of their banners. “Peter May Boys” announces another. I think we get the picture. Let’s assume the Boys didn’t contribute to Tom Harrison’s leaving gift. But it would be pleasant if every county’s guardians declared their loyalties so plainly. As one watched 19-year-old Tom Lawes delight both himself and all Surrey supporters by taking two important wickets in successive overs just before lunch and then another shortly after the resumption, it came as a renewed shock to realise that the 18 first-class teams have only a limited idea what they are playing for.Actually, of course, that is not altogether correct. The season is barely half over and a clutch of sides in both divisions have their eyes on their respective titles. Just as significantly, a four-day, first-class match is an intense affair in which the players invest considerable physical and emotional capital. Winning is important and careers depend on the outcome of such games. So Lawes’s joy when he bowled Jack Leaning off the inside edge for 75 and then had Ollie Robinson caught at fine gully by Ryan Patel carried both collective and personal significance. It began a slow collapse that saw Kent lose their last seven wickets for 91 runs and be forced to follow-on 342 runs behind. For his part, Lawes strolled off this great field with figures of 4 for 51 against his name in what is his first Championship match. At the same time, all English seasons since the introduction of two divisions have offered the prospect of promotion and the jeopardy of relegation. This summer, recommendations as to next year’s structure will be made by Andrew Strauss’s high-performance review panel before being polished by a small group of carefully chosen county chief-executives and voted on by the county chairmen in the autumn. Only then might the mere players find out what their professional lives will be like in 2023. You need to be rather arrogant to develop such a plan but no less deranged to blame England’s Ashes defeat on county cricket in the first place. Perhaps someone should ask the ECB’s howl-at-the-moon crazies whether the domestic game is also responsible for the 3-0 victory against New Zealand. In the meantime, Surrey’s players will keep chasing what would be their county’s 20th outright title and Kent’s will keep on keeping on. The visitors’ chances of scoring the 523 they needed to avoid the follow-on were slim this morning but Daniel Bell-Drummond and Leaning had taken their side to 216 for 2 before their 161-run third wicket stand was ended when Bell-Drummond chased a wide offspinner from Will Jacks and skewed a catch to Hashim Amla at point. Lawes then took his first two wickets and induced George Linde to play on after lunch. Apart from Jordan Cox’s 47, the remainder of Kent’s batting never threatened to change the shape of a game the result of which will be dependent on its third innings. However, a mention in dispatches is required for the short leg catch by Ben Geddes off Connor McKerr that dismissed Jaz Singh and ended Kent’s innings. It was an absurdly good right-handed reflex effort and worthy of a more pivotal moment in any match. It was also Surrey’s final wicket of the day. Rather than be overwhelmed by a deficit of 342, Kent’s batted out the remaining 44 overs with some ease, thus leaving Surrey’s bowlers with plenty of work to do on a fourth-day pitch offering them limited assistance. Joe Denly, in only his second Championship innings of the season, is unbeaten on 63 and was the more expansive of the pair; his eight fours included flourished drives and a whack over mid-on against Jacks’ off spin. Ben Compton was more restrained but passed 1000 runs for the season and needs only four runs to reach fifty for the tenth time in 15 first-class innings. The contrast between the pair was beguiling and almost unexpectedly satisfying. Patel bowled the last over and by that time Rory Burns was trying to unsettle the batters with unorthodox fields, the sort some would label “funky”. There was a silly mid-on and silly mid-off posted when the final ball of the day was greeted with Denly’s resolute forward defensive. The players left the field and almost at once one wondered how many opportunities fine cricketers of Compton’s ilk might get should red-ball cricket be reduced to a niche activity, one whose only purpose is the production of Test players rather than also being concerned with the maintenance of strong counties and all the benefits they bring to clubs and communities across the land. Members and supporters around the country are expressing their views and it’s no use thinking it will be easy to find consensus. Me? I’m with Peter May Boys on their redoubt and a few county chairmen might also be receiving their call-up papers quite soon.
