As well as Rodri: Pep needs to unleash Man City’s £180k-p/w "man-mountain"

Manchester City are in European action this evening as they prepare to take on Italian giants Inter at The Etihad in their first Champions League match of the season.

The Cityzens are playing in the new-look Champions League group phase for the first time and their first clash is a rematch of the 2023 final, which they won.

Rodri scored the only goal of the game as Pep Guardiola’s side secured the treble and their first trophy in the competition in the club’s history.

City come into this match off the back four wins from four games in the Premier League, with the latest being a 2-1 win over Brentford at The Etihad on Saturday.

Yoane Wissa gave the away side an early lead in the opening minute before a brace from superstar centre-forward Erling Haaland sealed all three points for the Cityzens.

Guardiola must now select an XI to take to the field against Inter this evening and the Spanish head coach could make a few changes from the team that faced the Bees, to give his side the best chance of picking up all three points.

Rodri should be unleashed

The first change that should be made to the team is that defensive midfielder Rodri should be brought back in to replace Mateo Kovacic in the middle of the park.

Guardiola selected Kovacic from the start against Brentford but decided to bring the Spain international on for him at half-time and that decision was rewarded with an improved display from the City giant in the second half.

As you can see in the table above, Rodri outperformed the Croatia international in the second half with more passes, more chances created, more long passes, more tackles, and more duels won, despite playing the same number of minutes.

The Spanish titan, who scored the winner against tonight’s opponents in the 2023 final, had been missing with a hamstring injury before making his first appearance of the season against Brentford.

Rodri provides defensive stability and sublime quality in possession, providing nine assists and completing 92% of his attempted passes in the Premier League last term, and must now be unleashed from the start against Inter this evening.

Along with the move to start the European Championship winner, Guardiola should also make a change at the heart of his defence to take John Stones out and unleash Ruben Dias from the start.

Why John Stones should be dropped

The England international made his first start of the season for City in the 2-1 win over Brentford on Saturday and endured a difficult afternoon at The Etihad.

It was a nightmare start for the Cityzens veteran as he failed to clear the ball when it came his way in the six-yard box, albeit with Ederson not covering himself in glory either, and that allowed Wissa to score from close range.

That went down as an error that led to a goal on Sofascore and you have to go all the way back to the 2020/21 Premier League season to find his last error that led to a goal in the division, which speaks to his quality and consistently over the last four years or so.

nico-elvedi-john-stones-everton-transfer-premier-league

The 30-year-old defender played 84 minutes against Brentford and did not win a single duel, losing his only battle, and did not make a single block, tackle, or interception, to prevent Ederson from being worked.

Thomas Frank’s side ended the match with six shots on target, one of which was Wissa’s goal, and one ‘big chance’ created, which shows that City allowed the away side to test their goalkeeper far too often.

Therefore, Guardiola must ruthlessly ditch Stones from the starting XI after his dismal showing against the Bees, with a sterner test against Inter, who won the Serie A by 19 points last season, to come this evening.

This would then open up a spot alongside Manuel Akanji for Dias to be restored into the starting line-up to provide more defensive stability at the back.

Why Ruben Dias should be unleashed

The £180k-per-week star should be unleashed because he is a solid centre-back who puts his body on the line for the team, whilst also being progressive in possession.

Over the last 365 days, Dias ranks within the top 6% of his positional peers in the Men’s Big 5 Leagues and European competitions for progressive passes per 90 (5.94) and the top 8% for progressive carries per 90 (1.32).

This shows that the Portuguese titan constantly looks to bring the ball forward to find teammates in advanced positions, whether that is through passes or carries, to build attacks for City.

The 27-year-old titan, who was once hailed as a “man-mountain” by ex-City ace Michael Ball, is also a dominant defender who has consistently impressed in the Champions League over the years, reaching two finals in four seasons at the club.

As you can see in the table above, Dias has consistently dominated opposition players in the Champions League throughout his career at City, particularly in the last two campaigns.

The clips above, from his performance against PSG in the semi-finals of the 2020/21 season, highlight his defensive attributes, as he excels at blocking shots and being in the right place at the right time to make key clearances.

Dias steps up in the big games, winning ten of his 16 duels against Inter in the final in 2023, and that is why he is the perfect choice to step in and start in the opening match of the Champions League campaign against the Italian giants tonight.

Rangers could sign a "ridiculous" star in dream transfer for Barron

Glasgow Rangers recorded a fourth straight win without conceding a goal in all competitions as they secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Hibernian on Sunday.

Tom Lawrence, who brilliantly curled the ball into the top corner in the first half, scored the only goal of the game for the Light Blues, whilst Jack Butland saved a penalty just before half time.

Philippe Clement is looking to add to his trophy haul this season, having won the League Cup with Rangers last term, and was allowed to make wholesale changes to the squad during the summer transfer window in order to compete for silverware.

Head of recruitment Nils Koppen and the Belgian boss sanctioned the departures of experienced players like Connor Goldson, Borna Barisic, Kemar Roofe, Ryan Jack, and John Lundstram, among others.

Allowing a large contingent of the club’s players over the age of 30 opened the door for the Gers to invest in young talent in order to develop a team over the years to come.

Rangers invested in promising prospects who could grow with more game time at Ibrox and one summer signing who has hit the ground running, despite his young age, is Connor Barron.

Connor Barron's strong start to life at Rangers

The central midfielder arrived in Glasgow during the summer transfer window after his contract with Scottish Premiership rivals Aberdeen came to an end.

That allowed Rangers to snap him up, with compensation due to be paid for his services, and they appear to have hit the jackpot with the Scotland international.

Barron has started all six of the club’s matches in the Premiership so far this season and showcased his quality in and out of possession for the Light Blues.

The Scottish maestro has offered reliability on the ball for Rangers with a pass success rate of 91% and 59.8 completed passes per match in the league.

This shows that the central midfielder rarely gives the ball away and helps to keep play ticking, which allows him to dictate the tempo of matches and control games for Clement. He knows when to slow the game down with simple passes and when to speed it up with balls forward between the lines to start attacks.

Out of possession, Barron has buzzed around the pitch to break up attacks and disrupt the opposition with 3.2 tackles and interceptions and 4.0 ball recoveries per match.

As you can see in the table above, the 22-year-old has been the outstanding defensive star of the Rangers midfield this season, whilst also being the most reliable passer in the engine room.

With the January transfer window coming up after the turn of the year, the Gers could look to land a dream midfield partner for Barron by dipping into the market to sign one of their reported targets.

Rangers' interest in Premiership starlet

During the summer transfer window, Football Scotland revealed that the Ibrox giants had sent scouts to watch Motherwell star Lennon Miller in action.

The report claimed that Clement was looking to revamp his squad with young talent and the then-17-year-old starlet fit the bill, having enjoyed a breakthrough season in the Scottish top-flight last season.

It was stated that Rangers were interested in signing the Scotland youth international and that they sent representatives to keep tabs on his progress in pre-season.

However, a move never materialised as the transfer window came to a close and Miller remained at Motherwell, as Rangers either could not afford to sign him or decided that they did not want to push for him in that particular window.

Speaking on the Open Goal podcast last month, James McFadden and Derek Ferguson both urged the Light Blues to swoop for the central midfielder next year.

McFadden claimed that the teenage star’s understanding of the game is “ridiculous” whilst Ferguson described him as a “big” and “strong” athlete, who could follow in Barron’s footsteps at Ibrox.

Clement and Koppen must now make a move for the Motherwell sensation when the January transfer window opens for business, as he could be a dream for Barron in midfield.

Why Lennon Miller would be a dream for Connor Barron

Firstly, the 18-year-old is another young Scottish midfielder who could develop and grow alongside his fellow Scotland U21 international at Ibrox.

This means that they could learn alongside each other and become the mainstay central midfield pairing for the club for many more years to come, barring any potential moves away for big money.

Miller, who Graham Dorrans claimed has a “bit of arrogance” in his play, could also be a dream for Barron because he offers an attacking threat from the middle of the park, which is a part of his game that the Rangers star is yet to show in Glasgow.

As you can see in the table above, the Motherwell star has produced four goals and assists in six outings, along with 2.5 key passes per game, whilst the Gers man has yet to register a single goal contribution.

This suggests that they could complement each other in the middle of the park as Barron could buzz around the pitch to win the ball back and provide a metronomic presence with his high pass accuracy, whilst Miller could push on and get involved at the top end of the pitch.

However, the 18-year-old gem has also made 2.7 tackles and interceptions per match and won 60% of his ground duels in the Premiership this term, after winning 68% of his duels across 25 league outings in the 2023/24 campaign for Motherwell.

Worse than Souttar: Clement must drop Rangers man who lost the ball 12x

The Light Blues forward endured a frustrating afternoon against Hibernian.

ByDan Emery Sep 29, 2024

This shows that both players can hold their own defensively, making them a secure midfield pairing out of possession, and Clement must now swoop to sign Miller in January to form an exciting partnership for Rangers moving forward.

Georgia Hennessy 62 sets up narrow win but Western Storm miss out on knockouts

Cordelia Griffith sets tempo for chase but Sunrisers fall five runs short

Western Storm opener Georgia Hennessy hit a run-a-ball 62 to lay the foundation for a five-run victory over Sunrisers at Fenner’s in the Charlotte Edwards Cup. Victory though was bittersweet for Storm who narrowly missed out on qualification due to an inferior run rate despite finishing level on points at the top of their group.Showing controlled aggression, Hennessy was severe on anything wayward. With Fi Morris initially playing the junior partner role, the opening pair put on 68 in the first 10 overs. Skipper Sophie Luff chipped in with a quickfire 34 as Storm closed on 147.In reply, Cordelia Griffith hit five boundaries to keep Sunrisers well ahead of the run rate during the first 10 overs, but Nicole Harvey took three wickets to arrest the momentum and dry up the scoring rate, as the hosts finished six runs short.Morris was content to let Hennessy play the aggressor during the early overs but took a brace of boundaries in the final over of the Powerplay. When the field spread Hennessy drove through extra cover for four before clipping one off her legs to bring up the 50 at the end of the eighth over.Grace Scrivens made the breakthrough in the 11th when Morris top-edged behind square for 21, but Hennessy kept up the attack. She clubbed Gayatri Gole back down the ground to bring up her half-century off 51 balls and smashed a wide ball from Naomi Dattani through extra cover for another boundary.Luff made her intentions clear clipping Sonali Patel off her legs behind square and then deftly cutting her for four more before taking two boundaries through extra cover off Gole. The pair shared a half-century stand before Hennessy holed out to Dattani who took a well-judged catch at long-on to give Scrivens her second wicket. Luff fell shortly afterwards, bowled by Dattani in the penultimate over.Despite two further wickets, Danielle Gibson finished the innings in style, scooping over the keeper’s head for four and hitting the last ball for a huge six.Griffith and Alice Macleod kept Sunrisers well ahead of the run rate initially, taking 47 from the Powerplay, 11 ahead of Storm at the same stage.Griffith set the pace with a boundary off the first ball, the first of five in a knock of 32 off 25 deliveries. Macleod too located the ropes and despite some energetic fielding from Storm, Sunrisers kept up the scoreboard pressure. It took a sharp catch off her own bowling by Harvey to break the momentum when Macleod chipped one back to her on 17.Griffith brought up Storm’s 50 in the eighth over, but she gave Harvey her second wicket when she pulled one high over midwicket where Morris took an excellent catch.Storm built the pressure as the next four overs elicited just 10 runs. With Sunrisers falling behind the required rate, Scrivens drilled Harvey straight to Gibson at extra cover who took an excellent diving catch.Harvey conceded her first boundary when Dattani drove forcefully through the covers and then drilled another straight down the ground for four more. The next over from Hennessy went for 13 to keep Sunrisers interested, despite the run out of Katherine Speed. With 50 needed off the last five overs, Dattani kept busy but when two wickets fell in successive overs, 14 required off the final over proved too many.

However, there are also those squad members who appear destined to play a bit-part role. Maresca has already shown that he’s unafraid to axe swathes of players and let them go, with Ian Maatsen, Conor Gallagher, Lewis Hall, Romelu Lukaku, Omari Hutchinson, Angelo Gabriel, Hakim Ziyech, Malang Sarr, Tino Anjorin, Thiago Silva, Lesley Ugochukwu, Armando Broja, Djordje Petrovic, Trevoh Chalobah, Kepa Arrizabalaga, David Datro Fofana, Aflie Gilchrist and Bashir Humphreys all departing on recent loan, permanent or Bosman deals.

Chelsea are prepared to loan out Mykhailo Mudryk in January, so the Ukranian can get some much-needed game time away, while it is believed both Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile could be sold by BlueCo.

AC Milan have also made contact with Carney Chukwuemeka, via his representatives, with the Rossoneri attempting to convince Chelsea’s £100,000-per-week gem to make a move to the San Siro in January.

Chukwuemeka now wants to leave Chelsea, so he can get first-team opportunities elsewhere, and the situation is very much the same with left-back Ben Chilwell.

The Englishman, who missed a large portion of last season through injury, isn’t enjoying a better time of it under Maresca. Spain international Marc Cucurella is the tactician’s preferred option, and Chilwell has been reduced to very limited cup cameos so far as a result.

Ben Chilwell "now wants out" of Chelsea with talks held

Journalist Simon Phillips, via his Substack, has shared an update on the 27-year-old’s future this week. He writes that Chilwell “now wants out” of Chelsea, and the feeling is mutual among those within Cobham.

It is believed numerous clubs have already been spoken to about Chilwell ahead of the January window, with the in-demand ex-Leicester City star attracting interest from Fulham, Crystal Palace, Ipswich, and Manchester United – as well as from clubs in La Liga and Serie A – who have approached Chilwell’s agents.

Chelsea are actively encouraging clubs to come forward, but as things stand, only loan with obligation-to-buy deals have been offered by interested sides. Todd Boehly and co want a permanent deal, though, and won’t entertain any loan offers – so there is still work to do.

“He’s Premier League ready, we know that having played in this league as well as he has for Leicester and he looked like he’d played for us for a long time,” said former boss Frank Lampard on Chilwell back in 2020.

“I admired him before because of his ability to be so high up the pitch when you want him, not that he’s being reckless by being there. He just arrives, he’s got the capacity to get up and back, great quality on the ball, and he’s a great lad.”
