David Bedingham thrives on post-Brexit discomfort to power Durham once more

Durham 307 for 4 (Bedingham 170*, Burnham 75, Conners 3-54) vs Derbyshire When David Bedingham was unveiled as a Durham player before the start of last season, he abandoned hopes of an international future with South Africa with the conviction that he was about to make his life in England. It caused his coach at Cape Cobras, Ashwell Prince, to complain: “We can’t keep pretending there is nothing wrong.”Brexit might have changed all that, as it has for many South Africans who can no longer use county cricket as such a certain pathway to a life in England – Graeme van Buuren being the latest to get wrapped up in red tape. With the disqualification of Kolpak players from county cricket came the ECB’s pronouncement that they would no longer accept the ancestral visas on which Bedingham hoped to depend. The bar is higher now.Bedingham must now make it in county cricket as an overseas player and, judging by his magnificent start to the season, he is capable of doing just that. A career-best 180 not out against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in the opening round has now been followed by an unbeaten 170 against Derbyshire on his home turf – and the chance to extend that CB on the second morning. The additional pressure appears to have been the making of him.”I was just happy to have a job at Durham,” he said. “Brexit happening didn’t help my case. Hopefully, I can justify it with more runs.”Derbyshire will view life a little differently. As well as he played, they should have run Bedingham out with only a single to his name. When Alex Lees jabbed Sam Conners into the covers and changed his mind about a single, Bedingham was more than halfway towards him, but Fynn Hudson-Prentice, valued above all for his reliability, sent a throw wildly off target when he should have been run out comfortably at the bowler’s end. From that point on, Bedingham batted with aplomb, picking off Derbyshire’s attack with simplicity. He had a scare on 76 when he edged Luis Reece between wicketkeeper and slip, but it was a rare blemish for a player who has now overtaken Yorkshire’s Adam Lyth as the leading run-maker in the country. This youthful Derbyshire attack is learning on the job this season – the know-how of the veterans Ravi Rampaul and Tony Palladino is no longer available – but there was enough quality to suggest that Bedingham, 27 today, can prosper against better attacks and still might have an international future if he so desires. It will be interesting to see whether the likes of Harmer, in particular, and Bedingham, now their future in county cricket is as overseas players, attempt a reverse-ferret and seek out an international pathway with South Africa. Even allowing for the complexities of diversity quotas, South Africa do have a chance to reverse the drain to England that has debilitated their cricket.Related

From repairing roads to building bridges: Jack Burnham battles back after drugs ban

David Bedingham, Ned Eckersley hundreds give Durham control

Brexit paperwork delay leaves Graeme van Buuren in Gloucestershire limbo

There was another encouraging innings for Durham on this opening day. Jack Burnham has had a thin time since he returned for the 2019 season after a year-long ban for three failed drugs tests in a single season. He had not made a half-century in any format since his 86 against Leicestershire in August 2019, although he batted with resolve in a losing cause against the champions, Essex, last week. And while Burnham was not as accomplished as Bedingham – he can look fidgety at the crease – it is probably a while since he has hit a shot with such authority as when he deposited Matt Critchley’s legspin over midwicket in to the north-west stand. Regrettably for him, he was soon afflicted by a back spasm which was a poor sort of reward.Critchley’s legspin had an unrewarding day after his eight wickets in the match against Worcestershire last week – the most expensive of the Derbyshire attack, he was picked off at will – but he did console himself with Burnham’s wicket, drawing him down the pitch for a catch at the wicket that could just as easily have been a stumping.Perhaps Derbyshire will not be the only county to come to The Riverside this season and conclude that things have changed. The entire square has been relaid – pools of water tended to congregate in the centre of the old one like in a soggy tarpaulin, and the pitches for the Blast were hardly conducive to good entertainment, so the need to upgrade was a pressing one. Blue skies helped give Durham the confidence to bat and it was a wise choice. Until the square beds in, there could be a lot of sedate surfaces like this one and scores could rise substantially as a result.Conners did pilfer a couple of new-ball wickets before the batsmen took control. Will Young’s unrewarding start to the season continued when he fell to a full-length outswinger, Scott Borthwick got a first-baller in his first Riverside innings since his return as captain – lbw to a ball that came back – and Conners, who also had Lees dropped at second slip, cartwheeled Lees’ off stump in his second spell.Conners is the pick of this young Derbyshire attack, a work in progress, but a work progressing along strong lines. He has won praise in the past from Jimmy Anderson and at times he might be a lookalike: one photo of him celebrating a wicket last week could have been of Anderson’s (much) younger twin. There was also a debut for George Scrimshaw, a lanky seam bowler who hails from Burton-on-Trent. Scrimshaw still awaits his first wicket, but he has already been honoured by his first mention from Derbyshire’s statistician David Griffin, a rite of passage. While some of you might have settled for reflecting that “George Scrimshaw” was a Derbyshire-sounding name, Griffin revealed that “George” was the third most common Christian name for Derbyshire players, there had not been one since 1967 and even he was known by his middle name, Bob (Bob Stephenson, since you asked).”It is just the way my head works,” he said.

Rangers agree deal to sign £8,800-a-week ace in deadline-busting transfer

Rangers have kick-started their deadline day business amid reports that Philippe Clement's side have now agreed a fresh deal to bring another new player to Ibrox this summer.

Busy summer at Ibrox to date

After finishing runners-up to Celtic in both the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup last season, Rangers are already two points off the early league pace after dropping points in their opening game.

Off the pitch though, they have been busy this summer, with no fewer than eight new faces arriving at Ibrox headlined by a permanent move for Mohamed Diomande and the arrival of centre-back Robin Propper from FC Twente.

ByBrett Worthington Aug 29, 2024

Highly-rated winger Vaclav Cerny has also joined the club on loan from Wolfsburg, with the 26-year-old having already contributed a goal and an assist in three Scottish top-flight outings. But more is set to be done before the deadline.

Vaclav Cerny

“I expect a busy week but more busy with incoming and a few outgoing," Clement revealed when asked about movement earlier in the week.

"I think the most important thing for every club is to get the right players in, to get the right quality. And everybody is in the club, I know, working really hard on that."

And they appear to have done just that amid reports that Rangers are on the verge of adding their ninth new face this summer.

Rangers agree deal to sign defender

Now, it has emerged that Rangers have agreed a deal to sign a new defender for Clement in the final hours of the transfer window.

That comes courtesy of Dutch outlet 1908 nl, who report that Rangers are set to sign defender Neraysho Kasanwirjo from Feyenoord having agreed a deal with the Eredivisie club and personal terms with the player over a loan move to Ibrox for the 2024/25 campaign.

Though having been largely used as a right back in his career to date, Kasanwirjo is a versatile defender able to play across the backline, which will hand Clement plenty of cover across the entire defence should the deal get over the line, while he could also help out in midfield if needed.

Kasanwirjo hit the headlines during his time with FC Groningen, where his performances caught the eye of Feyenoord, who swooped for the then-teenager the following summer (2023).

He was seemingly destined for big things, with talent scout Jacek Kulig telling X that Groningen had produced another "great talent", but his career has stalled somewhat and he spent last season out on loan with Austrian side Rapid Vienna.

Now with just three years left to run on his £8,800 per week deal in Rotterdam, it seems that the Eredivisie champions are willing to cut their losses and Rangers are now set to swoop for the 22-year-old, agreeing a loan move with a potential option to buy the defender should he prove a success at Ibrox.

For Rangers, it could prove an excellent new addition to their ranks given his age, versatility and clear talent.

West Ham hit gold on "generational" talent who’s now worth more than Rice

West Ham United fans are itching to see the back of the September international break and see Julen Lopetegui's project hit its stride.

Technical director Tim Steidten certainly demonstrated financial ambition, spending in excess of £120m, but after two losses from three opening Premier League fixtures, there's plenty to work on.

West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui

Albeit, those defeats came in a hard-fought game against Aston Villa and, latterly, Manchester City, who were supercharged by the ridiculous ball-striking of Erling Haaland, but chequered form in the weeks to come would probably ignite concern.

Lopetegui wields some high-quality cogs, but what he would give to a linchpin in the mould of Declan Rice, who has now been gone for little over a year…

Why West Ham sold Declan Rice

West Ham sold Rice to Arsenal in a £105m transfer that was a record for both clubs. He had since through the ranks in east London after being picked up as a wandering youth, nurtured and guided toward the limelight.

james-ward-prowse-declan-rice-west-ham-opinion

Rice completed 245 appearances for the Hammers, scoring 15 goals and supplying 13 assists, and was promoted to official club captain following Mark Noble's retirement in 2022, though he had donned the armband numerous times before.

Club chairman David Sullivan confirmed before the conclusion of the 2022/23 campaign that he would be sold, and while it was a bitter pill to swallow, watching him make the cross-London switch, the England international is one of the finest midfielders in the world and deserved his move to Arsenal, especially after helping West Ham to win the Conference League in his final appearance, defeating Fiorentina in the final.

He's since gone from strength to strength with the Gunners, failing to win any silverware beyond the FA Community Shield but proving to be a cardinal piece in Mikel Arteta's ongoing conquest against his former master, Pep Guardiola, fighting tooth and nail to end Manchester City's Premier League dynasty.

But do West Ham really rue his departure? Of course, watching a homegrown superstar ply their trade elsewhere is a bitter feeling, especially given that he scored during a 6-0 drubbing at the London Stadium last year, contributing toward the end of David Moyes' tenure.

Declan Rice for Arsenal

But the £105m figure recouped was used wisely, invested across the pitch to refine a talented team. Indeed, Rice might have conquered the Conference League before leaving east London, but he was unable to help West Ham to a respectable finish in the Premier League, with patchy domestic form consigning the club to 14th place.

West Ham’s “unplayable” star could already have a bigger legacy than Rice

He’s one of the club’s modern greats…

ByAngus Sinclair Sep 7, 2024

Last year, however, West Ham made improvements in the wake of the 25-year-old's sale, fizzling out toward the end of the term but still finishing eighth in the top flight and reaching the quarter-final of the Europa League, defeated in a competitive two-legged affair against indomitable Bayer Leverkusen.

Edson Alvarez impressed as the more-or-less direct replacement, bringing tough-tackling expertise to the engine room. James Ward-Prowse's set-piece speciality also aided the Irons, while Konstantinos Mavropanos' arrival from Stuttgart contributed toward shoring up the backline.

Edson Alvarez for West Ham

The real cream of the purchased crop, however, has got to be Mohammed Kudus, an electric winger who continues to inspire awe and, perhaps, has now surpassed Rice in regard to his financial value.

Muhammed Kudus's transfer value in 2024

West Ham signed Kudus from Ajax for a £38m fee in late August 2023, beating the likes of Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea to his signature.

West Ham winger Mohammed Kudus

He was rather good last year, gliding past opponents and causing all kinds of chaos through his darting runs and snap-jerk motions, second-guessing defenders and basically just wreaking havoc.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for progressive carries and the top 3% for tackles made per 90, illustrating his tenacity and multi-skilled approach.

Kudus hasn't quite found his shooting boots yet but the Ghana international's underlying statistics are more or less the same as last year. His dribbling and ferocious athleticism mark him as one of Europe's most exciting wide players, and it's no surprise that teams such as Liverpool took an interest during the off-season.

Indeed, as per well-respected Hammers source Claret & Hugh, Liverpool had been lurking around during July, with an eagerness to raid their divisional rivals and bring the winger to Anfield, but any notion of his sale was laughed off by West Ham bosses, debunking rumours that he was set to join Arne Slot's team for a £85m figure.

In actual fact, West Ham would not consider doing business with any party unless the figure paid for Rice (£105m) was eclipsed, something that just wasn't going to happen. This truly underscores how highly regarded Kudus is, with his unique skillset irreplaceable and thus best served at the London Stadium, for as long as possible.

To be fair, the £90k-per-week talent did have an £85m release clause embedded into his Hammers contract, but this expired back at the start of July, now giving Steidten and the powers that be in east London to dictate conditions, should a party declare their interest.

Described as a "generational talent" by journalist Gary Al-Smith, Kudus is one of the most breathtaking footballers to ever don a West Ham shirt. There are no two ways about it: whatever happens, the outfit has hit the jackpot with this one.

Josh Inglis hundred sees Leicestershire claim first win of campaign

Opener slams 103 not out as visitors run riot, leaving Northants rooted to bottom

Josh Inglis celebrates after reaching his hundred•Getty Images

Josh Inglis struck a T20 career-best 103 not out as Leicestershire beat Northamptonshire by 34 runs to record a first Vitality Blast win of the campaign. The Australian thrashed four sixes and 13 fours in a stunning 62-ball knock, sharing a century stand with skipper Colin Ackerman for the third wicket as the previously winless Foxes piled up 200 for 2. Callum Parkinson, with 2 for 19, and Gavin Griffiths, 2 for 23, made sure still winless Northamptonshire fell well short, finishing 166 for 7 despite an unbeaten 50 from Rob Keogh.Inglis dominated from the get go, his six over midwicket off Ben Sanderson in the second over a sign of things to come.Fellow opener Scott Steel left early after splicing Tom Taylor to mid-off and the hosts were left to regret skipper Adam Rossington missing a chance to stump the new batsman Arron Lilley when he’d made just 12, Nabi the unlucky bowler.Lilley made the most of the reprieve, hitting Graeme White for successive sixes, the second landing in a nearby garden, as he made 44 off 29 balls in a second wicket stand of 67 with Inglis before holing out at mid-off.Inglis, starved of strike during that stand, picked up where he’d left off, going to 50 off with a glorious straight six off White. With Ackerman content to play second fiddle, Inglis unfurled nine more fours, finding all parts of the boundary in a stellar display of improvisation. He would also outdo team-mate Lilley in smiting the biggest six of the day before dinking Sanderson over fine leg to reach three figures in the final over. The Steelbacks soon lost skipper Rossington when he sliced one skywards to backward point from the bowling of Parkinson. Richard Levi responded by bludgeoning Ackerman over the ropes at cow corner, but the visitors struck again when Naveen-ul-Haq produced a brute of a yorker which struck Ricardo Vasconcelos on the foot leaving him plumb lbw.Levi was castled by a flighted delivery from Ackerman before Griffiths struck twice in three balls, removing Wayne Parnell for 15 and Saif Zaib for a duck to leave the hosts 69 for 5. Nabi hit a six onto the pavilion roof and Keogh reached his half-century from the last ball of the match, but the game was long gone.

Sold by Moyes in 2021: West Ham dud has been outscoring Bowen since leaving

Over the past few years, Michail Antonio has been West Ham’s go-to central striker, featuring at the top end of the pitch in the hope of providing needed goals for the club.

The Jamaican has featured 311 times for the Hammers, scoring 82 times – becoming the club’s leading Premier League goalscorer in the process.

However, with Antonio now 34, he’s edging towards the tail end of his professional career, with the club making moves in the transfer window to try and seek a replacement for the former Nottingham Forest ace.

West Ham forward Michail Antonio

Julen Lopetegui wasted no time in bolstering his forward line over the summer, signing German striker Niclas Füllkrug from Borussia Dortmund in a £27m deal.

The Spaniard will be hoping that Fullkrug can form an excellent partnership with one player who was already plying his trade at the London Stadium before his arrival during the off-season.

Jarrod Bowen’s time at West Ham

After joining West Ham for a fee in the region of £20m during the January transfer window in 2020, winger Jarrod Bowen arrived at the club with high hopes after his impressive stint with Hull City that saw him register 16 goals in the first half of the campaign.

jarrod-bowen-hull-city

He’s since transformed into a world-class player at the London Stadium, bagging 62 times in his 206 appearances for the club.

Arguably, his best moment in the club’s colours came in the Europa Conference League final victory over Fiorentina back in 2022/23 – scoring the winning goal, ending the club’s 58-year wait for a major European title.

The 27-year-old was subsequently rewarded with a new seven-year contract at the London Stadium, taking his stay until the summer of 2030 at least.

Despite his impressive goalscoring record during his East London venture, the attacker has remarkably been outscored by one player who was prematurely sold at the London Stadium.

The man to outscore Bowen after leaving West Ham

That man is Ivorian striker Sebastian Haller who arrived at the club with huge expectations after his mammoth £45m move from Eintracht Frankfurt – a deal that broke the club’s record at the time.

Sebastian Haller for West Ham.

However, his time in the Premier League was a struggle, scoring just 14 times in his 54 appearances – with the club paying £3.2m for every goal he scored during his time with the Hammers.

Haller subsequently left the club for £20m joining Dutch side Ajax just 18 months after his big-money move to England, with former boss David Moyes prematurely selling the talent.

However, since his move away from the London Stadium, the 30-year-old has recaptured his goalscoring form, outscoring current star Bowen in the process.

The striker has bagged 59 goals in all competitions since his move away from London, with Bowen only one behind – registering 58 goals for the Hammers since January 2021.

Whilst there’s no denying that at times during his spell at the club, Haller looked out of his depth in England, he still produced moments of magic along the way whilst he was settling into life at the club, potentially thriving under the guidance of new boss Lopetegui.

His goalscoring record away from the London Stadium is evidence that he has the talent to flourish if given the opportunity, with the club potentially living to regret the decision to offload the Ivorian.

Williamson 49, Shami four-for and Southee's strikes set up intriguing final day

New Zealand’s last five wickets added 114 compared to India’s 61, and proved to be the difference

Sidharth Monga22-Jun-20213:59

Does Jasprit Bumrah need to learn to use the crease more?

A defensive masterclass from Kane Williamson all but eliminated a defeat for New Zealand in the World Test Championship final, but India were resolute in the session they got to bat, losing just two wickets and ending the penultimate day 32 runs ahead. It needed Tim Southee’s genius to prise out the openers in arguably the best conditions of a Test that has proved to be torrid for batters. So torrid that we can still think of a result despite only 225 overs of play in the five regulation days of the Test.As was the case in the two-Test series between these two teams in New Zealand, the contribution from the lower order proved to be the difference: New Zealand’s last five wickets added 114 to India’s 61. Yet their lead was only 32.New Zealand began the day – an hour after time because of a drizzle – 116 behind with eight wickets in hand, but India’s bowlers made sure New Zealand didn’t run away with the game. It was a masterclass in controlled bowling in helpful conditions, giving New Zealand nothing to score off and finding enough wicket-taking deliveries in between. In the second half of the innings, though, Williamson found support from Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee, whose risks against a now-tiring three-man seam attack came off. New Zealand’s last five added 114 in 29 overs, which defied the prevailing run rate of around two in the rest of the match. Before the lower order got away from them, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah and Ishant Sharma put in quite a shift to make sure New Zealand didn’t bat them out of the contest. They did it the hard way: not looking for magic balls but drying up runs with sustained, intense good bowling. Between them, the three bowled all the overs in the first session followed by a half-an-hour lull leading to the second new ball in the second session.A good indicator of the quality of bowling and the surface is the rate at which Williamson is scoring because he is a masterful batter who plays according to the situation. His 49 off 177 balls was his slowest innings of 20 or more balls. The last time New Zealand scored fewer than their 152 here in the first 80 overs in an innings was way back in 2002.In the whole first session, you could count the number of ordinary balls on one hand: two inswingers down the leg side from Ishant that went unpunished and a half-volley each from Shami and Bumrah. Just 34 runs came in that session for the wickets of Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls and BJ Watling.Taylor swung hard at the sight of the first full ball he got and ended up chipping to mid-off. Nicholls followed an around-the-wicket awayswinger. Watling got a peach from Shami, which pitched middle and hit top of off.Kane Williamson picked up his scoring pace in the second session•Getty Images

At the start of the second session, India had to relent a little as the new ball was seven overs away. This is where the scoring rate started to turn, but with the new ball Shami trapped Colin de Grandhomme with an inswinger from wide on the crease to make it 162 for 6. Jamieson, though, used his reach well to go after the bowlers. A ball after he hit the first six of the match, he top-edged a hook to fall to Shami for 21 off 16.New Zealand were still 25 behind, and Williamson now upped his intent a little. He upper-cut Shami for a four, started looking to open the face a little whenever allowed to go back, but still picked boundaries only off poor balls, which increased now that the three fast bowlers were close to bowling two sessions just by themselves.Williamson will be cross with himself that in such a situation he followed a wide ball from Ishant with an attempted back-foot drive, possibly leaving a few runs out there. Southee, though, made sure they took the lead past 30, hitting two sixes, going past Ricky Ponting to move to No. 15 on six-hitters’ list in Test cricket. However, it was Southee the bowler who kept New Zealand in the hunt for a win with highly skilful bowling. India began batting with the final session of the day, a situation reminiscent of their defeat in Christchurch where they lost six wickets in the last session of a day after the first innings of both sides had practically cancelled each other out. That pitch had steep and uneven bounce. This one was now finally settling down going into the third day of use. There wasn’t anything off the pitch available for the New Zealand bowlers, but the swing with the Dukes was still a challenging proposition. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill looked in control, but Southee was just a little better.Gill was removed in the 11th over when Southee followed up three outswingers with a change in seam position at the last moment, bowling his wobble-seam delivery, which swings in. Gill looked to flick to midwicket, which meant he was beaten on the inside edge and trapped in front.Rohit looked more assured, and in the company of Cheteshwar Pujara was headed for stumps when Southee came back for a testing second spell. They had had to endure the Jamieson examination before Southee took over.

DESEMPENHO INSTÁVEL E APOSTAS MALSUCEDIDAS COMPLICAM TREINADOR
