Leeds United are less than a month away from kicking off their 2024/25 Championship season with a game against Portsmouth at Elland Road.

The Whites will have still have a few weeks after that clash to finish off their business during the summer transfer window, which does not slam shut until the end of August, but may want to do the bulk of their work ahead of the season opener.

Daniel Farke will surely want as much time as possible with new signings to ensure that they are ready to slot in and adapt to his system and style of play, rather than trying to bed them in once the campaign has already started.

Central defender Joe Rodon has already been brought in on a permanent deal from Tottenham Hotspur, after his loan spell last term, and goalkeeper Alex Cairns has also been snapped up permanently as a back-up option.

The West Yorkshire side have dipped into the loan market to secure the services of central midfielder Joe Rothwell from Premier League side Bournemouth.

It now remains to be seen what Leeds will be able to do throughout the rest of the window but they have been urged to sign a star from one of their Championship rivals.

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has claimed that Leeds would almost guarantee promotion by signing Sammie Szmodics from Blackburn Rovers.

Speaking on the Posh Podcast, as relayed by Planet Sport, he stated that bringing the Ireland international to Elland Road would be "pretty much guaranteeing you promotion" because he won the Golden Boot in the second tier last term.

However, it is unclear as to whether or not the Whites hold a genuine interest in the talented goalscorer or if MacAnthony is simply urging them to consider a deal for him.

Szmodics joined Blackburn from Peterborough, where he had produced 27 goals and 14 assists in 96 appearances in all competitions, and this means that the Posh chief has a vested interest in the gem's future.

Brentford and Celtic are among the other teams to have been linked with an interest in the prolific attacker, whilst Ipswich Town have reportedly held talks over a deal for the forward.

Leeds must now act on MacAnthony's recommendation and pursue a deal for the Irish marksman as he could come in as a big upgrade on Farke's current number ten – Joel Piroe – if they can secure his services before the end of the summer transfer window.

It was an interesting season for the Dutch striker after his move from Championship rivals Swansea on a permanent deal ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Having predominantly played as a centre-forward for the Welsh side in his first two years in England, Farke opted to deploy him in an attacking midfield or second striker role, behind a number nine, for most of the campaign.

That change in position did not help to get the best out of the left-footed star, though, as his goal return diminished and he offered little out of possession or in build-up play.

Piroe had scored 41 goals across his first two years in the Championship with Swansea, firing in 22 and then 19, but only managed 14 goals in 45 league outings for Leeds.

This suggests that the switch in role took away some of his goalscoring prowess, which meant that the Whites did not see the best version of the Dutchman.

As you can see in the table above, his performances away from his goalscoring left a lot to be desired as he struggled in and out of possession.

Piroe lost the majority of his physical duels, notably in the air, and that shows that opposition defenders found it far too easy to get the better of him last season.

His creative statistics also show that the 24-year-old attacker did not offer much in terms of being able to create high-quality opportunities for his teammates.

Overall, his form in his first season for Leeds suggests that there is room for the club to land an upgrade on him in the transfer window, and that is what Szmodics could be.

Why Sammie Szmodics could be a Joel Piroe upgrade

Firstly, the Ireland international spent the majority of last term playing in an attacking midfield role for Blackburn, appearing 34 times in that role.

This immediately suggests that he would, stylistically, be an ideal signing to come in and replace Piroe as a goalscoring number ten behind Georginio Rutter, Mateo Joseph, or Patrick Bamford.

Whilst, on paper, Szmodics suits the role that the Dutchman is typically deployed in, does his quality on the pitch make him an upgrade on the ex-Swansea star?

The 28-year-old dynamo, who scored 33 goals in all competitions for Rovers, has statistics in the Championship from the 2023/24 campaign that suggest that he does.

Szmodics showcased his quality at the top end of the pitch on a regular basis in the second tier to help Blackburn to avoid relegation from the division.

As you can see in the table above, the right-footed sensation scored more than twice as many goals as Piroe and created more than twice as many 'big chances' for his teammates, despite playing one fewer match.

He ranked within the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the division for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.62) and the top 3% for non-penalty Expected Goals and Expected Assisted Goals combined per 90 (0.62), which shows that not many, if any, players in his position made a greater impact in the final third.

These statistics suggest that the Blackburn attacker, who was hailed as "ridiculous" by journalist Josh Bunting, would come in as a big upgrade on Piroe by offering more to Farke's side in and out of possession, which is why they should take MacAnthony's advice and sign the impressive attacker to hopefully guarantee promotion.

His spectacular goalscoring pedigree in the Championship could help Leeds to win more matches, with over twice as many goals as Piroe, and that could see them make the jump to the automatic places after finishing third last term.

Quizzed on potential new additions, the Rangers boss admitted he expected fresh faces between now and the Scottish Premiership getting back underway but refused to be drawn on who that could be.

Clement said: "I'm confident of that [new signings] because everyone is working hard for that. There's a good possibility, but no guarantees. There has to be a signature from three sides – the player, the other team and from us. It's working every day with the players who are available to make them better and to give them experience in pre-season of course. Because of the Euros everything starts slower. You see that with several teams where nothing has happened yet.

One of those duly arrived in the shape of Vaclav Cerny, who has moved to Ibrox on loan for the 2024/25 campaign and has brought plenty of excitement with him despite a tough season in Germany.

“It is a very nice day for me. I am happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started", he told the Rangers media team.

“Obviously from the first talks with the manager, it gave me a very good feeling and from there on I would say it went pretty fast. I was happy about the contact and just couldn’t wait to come down here and be here and experience it all.”

Meanwhile, there are also reports that Rangers have tabled an offer for Atletico Nacional defender Edier Ocampo, who is considered one of the brightest talents in Colombia. Now, they have agreed a deal for a player at the other end of his playing career.

The Spanish midfielder, who has appeared 198 times for Sevilla, turned 30 earlier this month but could bring a wealth of experience to the Ibrox engine room. He has been part of the Sevilla squad that lifted the Europa League on two occasions, most recently in 2022/23, where his side defeated Roma in the final.

And a deal to bring him to Rangers is progressing, the report states. They relay claims that "a loan for the season with a €5million option to buy next summer has been deemed acceptable" by the Spanish outfit, who are under pressure to offload players to comply with financial fair play.

Now, they are waiting on Jordan's green light, with Rangers likely to have to cover his £58,000-a-week wage.

It is certainly a different calibre of signings to that which the Ibrox faithful have become used to in recent seasons, with both Cerny and Jordan arguably in the prime of their careers and potentially ready to lend their talents to Clement's upcoming title effort.

A day before the squad is picked for the forthcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy one-day tournament, Mumbai have appointed a new head coach in former allrounder Ramesh Powar.Powar, the former Mumbai and India offspinner, replaces former Mumbai batsman Amit Pagnis, who resigned a month after taking charge citing the team’s “poor performance” during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy where the 41-time Ranji Trophy champions failed to make the knockouts having lost four of their five matches during the group stages.Sanjay Naik, the Mumbai Cricket Association secretary, confirmed Powar’s appointment and said it was until end of March. “The Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) has recommended Powar as the head coach. The MCA has appointed him for this season,” Naik told ESPNcricinfo.Powar, who won the Ranji title six times with Mumbai, said he took up the challenge as he wanted to restore the dominance enjoyed domestic giants in the past. “I am looking forward to create healthy and positive atmosphere in the dressing room. We want to create a brand of cricket which Mumbai was known for in the past,” Powar said.Powar, who is 42, retired from in 2015, was until last September a spin bowling coach at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Before that he served as interim head coach of the Indian women’s team, a stint that included the 2018 Women’s World T20 where India reached the semifinals.Recently, the Mumbai selection committee, lead by former India fast bowler Salil Ankola, had named 100-plus probables for selection trials. A final squad, Naik said, would be picked on Wednesday, which would then travel to Jaipur where Mumbai are part of the Elite Group D in the Vijay Hazare Trophay, which includes Delhi, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Pondicherry.Some of key players that are likely to be part of the final squad include Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Prithvi Shaw, Dhawal Kulkarni, Aditya Tare, and Sarfaraz Khan. Barring Iyer, the rest of these players were part of the Mumbai squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy where Yadav lead the team. In his resignation, Pagnis had said inadequate preparation was the key reason behind Mumbai’s inability to make the knockouts.Powar acknowledged that his primary task would be to create a cohesive unit and help players understand the legacy of a team that once was invincible in Indian domestic cricket. “We have lot of good players. Individually they are very good, but as a team we need to gel together and play well and complement each other and help them perform their roles. All these players are good, but why then are we not able to become a team that is invincible? That is my challenge.”Amol Muzumdar, not Powar, was MCA’s choicePowar’s last-minute appointment follows a chaotic set of developments involving differences between the CIC and MCA. According to Naik, after Pagnis stepped down, former Mumbai captain Amol Muzumdar had informed the MCA informally that he was available in case he was needed.It is understood that the CIC, which comprises former India and Mumbai cricketers Lalchand Rajput, Raju Kulkarni and Sameer Dighe recommended Powar after the latter wrote to the MCA in January stating he was interested in taking charge as head coach. On January 18, the CIC checked with the MCA whether Pagnis had indeed stepped down and what should be the recruitment process to find a replacement.On February 1, the CIC sent another email suggesting steps to facilitate the team’s preparation for the Vijay Hazare tournament including conducting practice matches. The CIC also sought clarity on the coach appointment process. On February 5, the MCA responded to the CIC stating it had “appointed” Muzumdar as the head coach of the Mumbai team keeping in mind the “limited time” available.The CIC is understood to have expressed “surprise” over Muzumdar’s appointment in its response. As per the MCA constitution, the CIC said it had the powers to appoint both the selectors and coaches for Mumbai teams. The CIC also pointed out that it had no knowledge of Muzumdar officially applying for the job. The CIC stated that though Muzumdar was “capable” of doing the job, Powar was its final choice as he had the “credentials” and experience. The CIC left the final decision to the MCA president Vijay Patil.On Tuesday it is understood the MCA informed the CIC to appoint Powar.

Australia’s T20I captain Aaron Finch freely admits that the squad currently in New Zealand will be enormously different for the World Cup meant to be played in India later this year, meaning the tour lengthened considerably by a two-week quarantine period will be largely about fact-finding on fringe players and his own recovery from a dreadful Big Bash League.Finch did his best to completely avoid cricket during a 10-day sabbatical following the Melbourne Renegades’ second underwhelming BBL campaign in succession, the difference this time being that his own returns also dropped away alarmingly, tallying just 179 runs at 13.76 across 13 increasingly harried innings.Having crossed the Tasman on Sunday, the squad helmed by Australia’s senior assistant coach Andrew McDonald will provide an opportunity for Finch and the touring selector George Bailey to get a closer look at their options while the likes of David Warner, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins are still at home.”The top three will be [Matt] Wade, [Josh] Philippe and myself,” Finch said. “Maxi [Maxwell] and Stoin [Stoinis], four and five, around that area. It’s pretty simple I’d imagine. When you look at the squad list, Josh Philippe has been in great nick and it’s great to see him playing well. Matty Wade, we know how dynamic he is along with Maxi. We’re going to be flexible with that top order as well. If that means Wadey or myself or Josh, whoever bats at three, it’ll be a great opportunity.”We’ll use this as a way to gather a lot of info leading up to that T20 World Cup, which means there might be a little bit of shuffling. But we’ll try to stick closely to the guys playing their roles that they’re accustomed to or where we’ll see them in the future playing. The result is not the be all and end all. I think building up and finding information, finding different ways our team can structure up is almost more important.”That sort of attitude will undoubtedly help Finch emerge from his BBL fog also. “Literally didn’t touch a bat during the 10 days I think I had off,” he said. “I’m feeling a lot better about my game – the one thing about when you’re out of nick or not getting any runs, you’re not quite sure where to turn, so putting the bat down for a while, just looking at some footage and assessing where you think your game was at and being realistic about it was as much as I needed to do.”I know I can still play, so it’s just about making sure when I turn up for these isolations training sessions I’m working on specific things and not just training for the sake of it. I feel pretty good to be honest, and that might sound pretty stupid coming off the back of not many runs. Philippe and the prodigiously talented young wristspinner Tanveer Sangha are two players Finch is particularly eager to get a closer look at. Assessing Philippe, Finch reckoned he was witnessing a future staple of the Australian top order at a key time in which he was learning how to balance good days and bad.”He’s someone who has obviously got all the shots but he’s starting to get to that point of his career, and I think a lot of that was on the back of having a couple of months of IPL where he spent a lot of time with AB [de Villers] and Virat [Kohli], talking about batting with myself,” Finch said. “He’s taken his game to a new level because he’s just getting past that period when he’s not hitting them well. When he’s playing well, it’s lights out, it’s brilliant.”But just those days when he’s not feeling 100%, he’s getting through that little danger period and still having a big impact on the game which I think is so important in T20. It’s such an up-and-down game, you’re not going to be consistent all the time but you can still contribute and he’s doing a brilliant job, he played fantastically well. When his head is still, he’s playing beautifully, and his wicketkeeping has been really good as well. That’s a great position for him to be in, coming here with a huge amount of confidence off the back of another Big Bash title.”As for the vacant Renegades coaching role, likely to be bid for by a wide array of candidates including Trevor Bayliss, David Saker and Simon Helmot, Finch did not hide his wish that there was more than one McDonald available, the better to play a key role for both club and country.”I would love Andrew back coaching the Renegades but I also think there’s a job for him to do with the Australian team and that’s the most important,” Finch said. “He’s doing a brilliant job around the group and with the bowlers as well, so yes and no is the answer. I’d love him back but what he’s doing at the moment is outstanding, he’s head coach of this tour, he’s as good as you get. I can understand if he’s not coach of the Renegades, but yeah.”The five-match T20I series will start on February 22 in Christchurch.

Perhaps limited by the Premier League's PSR rules, the Magpies are yet to steal the headlines this summer, signing the likes of Lloyd Kelly and Lewis Hall. Of course, there is still time for that to change, and with reports suggesting that Newcastle have made their first approach for Marc Guehi, manager Eddie Howe could finally receive some positive news.

The Crystal Palace and England defender would instantly become Newcastle's standout signing and replace the injured Sven Botman in Howe's starting side just under two weeks until the new Premier League campaign gets underway. And whilst Guehi potentially steals the spotlight, the Magpies could also seal a deal to sign a future star.

According to NUFC Blog, Newcastle are set to sign Kyle Fitzgerald from Galway United. The 17-year-old winger has also attracted the interest of Wolves and Brighton, but it is Newcastle who look set to win the battle for his signature. It's at St James' Park where he will seemingly join fellow Irish youngster Rory Finneran, who recently arrived from Blackburn Rovers.

One for the future, Fitzgerald represents the plan in place at Newcastle to create sustained success rather than becoming a flash in the pan as one of the Premier League's richest clubs these days.

"Exciting" Fitzgerald is one for the future

He may not be the big-money signing that will instantly ease the concerns of Newcastle fans, but Fitzgerald's reportedly pending arrival is still one that could prove important in years to come. Just 17 years old, the winger signed his first professional contract at Galway last season, earning the praise of manager John Caulfield as a result.

Caulfield told Galway's official website: "It’s fantastic for the club, he’s a local lad coming through with lots of talent. We’ve had lots of success the last couple of years with Alex Murphy going on to Newcastle United and David Tarmey coming through, and now Kyle signing a contract.

"Kyle’s an exciting technical player, he’s doing really well with the Ireland teams, too. We’re looking forward to working with Kyle and to continue his development and deliver on his undoubted potential with Galway United."

Months later, he's now seemingly set to follow Murphy by making his way to Newcastle. A potential long-term replacement for the likes of Miguel Almiron, Newcastle are planning for the future in abundance all whilst beating Premier League sides in the transfer market. Fitzgerald's development will certainly be one to watch.

O São Paulo tem incógnitas em sua escalação. A principal delas, assim como nas últimas rodadas, é na lateral direita. Recuperado, Orejuela está à disposição de Ceni e pode voltar a atuar, mas disputa posição com Igor Gomes. O colombiano foi motivo de polêmica na última semana após seu empresário criticar Crespo. Outro agente que fez o mesmo foi o de Benítez. O meia argentino também deve estrar na relação para a partida.

O São Paulo sofre, porém, com os importantes desfalques de Rigoni (lesionado) e Arboleda (seleção equatoriana). Galeano (trauma no tornozelo) e Igor Vinícius (pancada no olho).

O Ceará vem logo atrás do São Paulo na classificação, na 14ª posição. Com um ponto a menos em relação ao time paulista, o Vozão tem 29 pontos somados na tabela e está apenas dois pontos acima do 17º colocado. O Ceará, porém, tem um jogo a menos, contra justamente o 17º lugar da tabela, o Bahia.
