European heavyweights set for new talks to sign £98 million Chelsea player

An elite European side are set for new talks with Chelsea over signing one of their players this summer, and talks have also been opened with his representatives.

Chelsea tipped for mass summer sale as Boehly plots overhaul

After sealing Mauricio Pochettino's replacement in new head coach Enzo Maresca, chairman Todd Boehly and the wider recruitment team have wasted no time in backing the Italian with fresh faces.

Chelsea consider offering two players in swap deal to sign £50 million star

It could be two out, one in at Stamford Bridge.

ByEmilio Galantini Jun 28, 2024

Centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo arrived on a free transfer from Fulham, with the likes of Brazilian starlet Estevao Willian and Omari Kellyman signing for Chelsea thereafter, as the Blues add some exciting talent to the books as well as senior first-teamers.

Kellyman swapped the Midlands for Stamford Bridge with left-back Ian Maatsen going the other way in a separate deal. Chelsea reached an agreement to sell Maatsen for just over £35 million, with the Dutch defender joining Thiago Silva out the Stamford Bridge exit door.

The 22-year-old impressed on loan at Borussia Dortmund last season, helping them reach the Champions League final, but his excellent displays weren't enough to convince Chelsea to not sell for a decent fee.

Alongside Maatsen, it is believed a fair few current members of Maresca's squad could be sacrificed over the coming weeks, as co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley look to balance the books and trim Chelsea's bloated team.

Armando Broja, Malang Sarr, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Trevoh Chalobah, Lesley Ugochukwu, Marc Cucurella, Mykhailo Mudryk and Conor Gallagher are all players who could be sold by Chelsea this summer.

Ipswich Town have also opened talks to sign Omari Hutchinson this week, according to multiple reliable sources, while flop £325,000-a-week striker Romelu Lukaku is attracting serious interest from Serie A again.

Romelu Lukaku

The Belgian, who Chelsea signed in a £98 million deal from Inter Milan three years ago, has since spent time back at the Nerazzurri on loan. Lukaku also played under Jose Mourinho on another temporary spell at Roma, and it is now believed AC Milan want to strike yet another loan for the 31-year-old.

AC Milan set for new talks to sign Lukaku from Chelsea

La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed earlier this week that Lukaku gave his green light to join Milan, with Sky Italia sharing an update of their own on the matter. The broadcaster says Milan are set for new talks with Chelsea to sign Lukaku, and a meeting has been scheduled with his representatives to gauge the feasibility of a potential transfer.

The Rossoneri are pushing for a loan deal, but Chelsea are apparently demanding they pay a high portion of his wages. Lukaku has proved time and time again he can perform well in Italy, with Leonardo Bonucci branding him a "complete" striker.

– finalizou.

Usman Qadir finally hits the zone, and puts on a show to remember

It’s taken him time to get to international cricket, and on Sunday, he showed that he belonged there

Usman Qadir just couldn’t get an international game. Until this series. Until today. This second T20I against Zimbabwe might be the occasion Qadir looks back on as the one that made him a serious spin option for the national team in short-format cricket.there was a brief period where the possibility of representing that side didn’t appear unrealistic; his international prospects in Pakistan seemed bleak at any rate. That soon petered out, though, and last year, out of nowhere, seemingly, head coach and chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq brought him in from the cold to tour Australia. He never got a game, though, and when he was picked for the third T20I against Bangladesh in January, it was rained off before the toss could be had. On that rain-soaked day, Qadir’s drought continued. When Shadab Khan was ruled out of the ODI series against Zimbabwe because of an ankle injury, it looked like that would be the format Qadir would make his debut in. But Pakistan went with Imad Wasim as the spin frontman, and just the pacers for the final ODI. Finally, belatedly, when he was handed his Pakistan debut in the first T20I, figures of 3-0-24-1 barely caused any ripples.ALSO READ: My father wished I would wear the Pakistan star – Usman QadirOn Sunday, it began inauspiciously enough, when Wesley Madhevere pounced on a long hop to dispatch him to cow corner off his first ball. But that was the only time Qadir put a foot wrong all day.Qadir didn’t concede another run to Madhevere all over, and should have had him lbw with a perfect googly that spun sharply to crash into his pads; replays showed it would also have crashed into leg stump. But the umpire remained unmoved and Pakistan puzzlingly didn’t review. Qadir, however, seemed to have found the zone where his confidence and talent were in perfect harmony, and, over the next 18 balls, begun to weave a web Zimbabwe had no clue how to untangle.Sikandar Raza lasted just two balls against him, hopelessly defeated in the flight as he charged the bowler, the googly knocking back his stumps. “That Sikandar Raza dismissal was my favourite moment,” Qadir later told the PCB’s media channel. “He charged me and I bowled the wrong one that he missed and got bowled off it. I enjoyed myself a lot. This is international cricket, and only if you perform will you stay in the side. In T20 cricket, if you look aggressively for wickets, that helps you out a lot.”ALSO READ: Usman Qadir, Pakistan’s new legspinning hopeThat is precisely what Qadir did. Unafraid of tossing the ball up, of daring the batsmen to attack him, he found great balance between aggression and discipline. He bowled the googlies liberally, but didn’t overdo them. He continued to give the ball air, but was perfect with his line and length, so there weren’t many opportunities to hit him. And he wasn’t to be denied Madhevere’s wicket in the end, drawing him into a sweep the batsman failed to execute. It caught his pads once more, and this time, the umpire raised his finger.Even when Elton Chigumbura seemed like he had got the measure of the legspinner, hitting through the line back over his head for six and swiping the next ball for four, Qadir was determined to have the last laugh. The final ball of his spell was a picture-perfect legspinner, tossed up enough to coax the batsman out of his crease, and spinning sharply enough to leave him stranded. It gave Mohammad Rizwan the easiest stumping and Qadir his third wicket – giving him figures of 4-0-23-3 all told.”When I played the first match, I was a little nervous, as one can get before playing their first match. I was told I bowled well though and was backed by the team, just told not to repeat the mistakes I made during the first match,” he said. “So I worked on them. The management and the captain gave me confidence during the second match so I felt I bowled with a lot more maturity today. I felt my googly was spinning, even though the legbreak wasn’t doing as much. I’ll continue this performance level in future hopefully.”It was a performance Shadab would have been proud of. Indeed, it might have left a certain Abdul Qadir beaming, too.

Arsenal suddenly want to sign new £50m Premier League star after Calafiori

Arsenal have shown they want a £50 million Premier League star "in recent days", coming amid their advancing talks over a deal for Riccardo Calafiori.

Arsenal look to finalise Calafiori signing after agreeing personal terms

The north Londoners agreed personal terms with Calafiori over a five-year contract last week, as backed by Fabrizio Romano, as Arsenal continue talks with Bologna over the final fee for him.

Arteta personally wants Arsenal to sign £30 million Jesus alternative

The Spaniard thinks he’s ideal.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 9, 2024

Sporting director Edu Gaspar and manager Mikel Arteta could soon welcome Calafiori as their second summer signing, after completing a £27 million deal for goalkeeper David Raya from Brentford.

The Italy international, who impressed at Euro 2024 and was a sore miss through suspension in their last 16 defeat to Switzerland, also helped Bologna qualify for the Champions League last season.

Despite conceding the fewest goals of any Premier League side season, Arsenal's potential agreement for the 22-year-old would reinforce Arteta's options at both centre-back and left-back – with the Serie A ace capable of playing both roles.

Reliable media outlets like The Guardian state that Arsenal are hoping to finalise a deal for Calafiori this week, but the Gunners may have to pay around £42 million, as Bologna hold firm on their asking price. The Italians owe 50 per cent of the final fee to FC Basel, who included a seismic sell-on clause in their deal to sell Calafiori to Bologna last summer.

Once or if Arsenal get Calafiori over the line, attention will turn to other areas of Arteta's team that need reinforcing ahead of 2024/2025. One position is centre-midfield, which may not be as strong by the beginning of next season without a new addition.

Thomas Partey is ready to leave Arsenal in pursuit of a fresh challenge, according to reports, while Mohamed Elneny left the Emirates after his contract expired on June 30.

They did agree to extend Jorginho's deal, keeping him at London Colney until next summer, but Arteta may need a star alternative to the 32-year-old and Declan Rice in the middle of the park.

Arsenal show Joao Gomes interest "in recent days"

According to South American journalist Valentin Furlan, Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes has emerged as a target for Edu.

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes celebrates

The Brazilian, who starred under Gary O'Neil last season, is a wanted man across the Premier League. Arsenal have shown interest in signing Gomes from Wolves "in recent days", according to Furlan, but reports suggest he's valued at around £50 million.

Wolves, taking into account his good market value, are also not opposed to selling in the coming weeks, making this one to watch.

Adam Gilchrist urges selectors to lock in Joe Burns to aid final warm-up match

Cameron Green will play his first day-night first-class match at the SCG on Friday

Andrew McGlashan09-Dec-2020

Adam Gilchrist believes the Australia selectors should rubberstamp Joe Burns’ place in the Test line-up before the pink-ball warm-up game against India at the SCG to allow him to play with a freedom that may help break his run drought. It is a conversation that may well already have taken place and Burns has had plenty of backing in recent weeks from selectors and team-mates, but two more low scores at Drummoyne Oval for Australia A – caught behind trying to leave a ball and then dragging on a drive – left him with a tally of 61 runs in seven innings for the summer. The subsequent concussion suffered by Will Pucovski and the groin injury that has ruled out David Warner have added to the question marks over the opening positions for the day-night Test in Adelaide. The wording of national selector Trevor Hohns’ remarks on Wednesday – where he said Burns had enjoyed “excellent” preparation and that the second Australia A match would “round it out nicely” – did not suggest a player about to be jettisoned.ALSO READ: David Warner ruled out of first Test against India”It may be the sensible thing to do, say don’t worry, you are going to walk out there in Adelaide now gain some exposure against Bumrah and whoever the Indians serve up under light,” Gilchrist said at a Fox Cricket BBL launch event.”That would be a good sensible approach to clear any doubts out, that he has the backing, he’s not playing a trial game, he’s just having a practice game to sharpen up for Adelaide.”Nothing ever seems to be a perfect science. You can get nicked out and go into the Test a big negative of mind because you haven’t got the runs, but 10 balls into your Test innings you can that’s what it feels like and you are away.”The selectors have yet to add any batting reinforcements to the squad but it is expected that Marcus Harris, who will open with Burns for Australia A, will be added as cover for Pucovski. However, they may need to consider more than one extra batsman given that very last-minute additions are still not possible under the Covid-19 protocols for the tour. That could open the door for an experienced player such as Usman Khawaja although there was no indication that he was about to leave the Sydney Thunder BBL squad currently in Canberra.”If you went to Khawaja, I don’t think he’d see it as just one game, he’d say he’d make it hard to drop me now and eye a few more years in the Australian team,” Gilchrist said. “Marcus has had some Test experience, done a lot right in the Shield season. I don’t think we are bereft of strong options, just working out which is the correct one.”The second Australia A match will also be another chance for Cameron Green to impress in what will be his first experience of pink-ball cricket. It remains unlikely he will force his way into the Test side for Adelaide, but his unbeaten 125 and a brace of wickets at Drummoyne continued to mount his case. He will likely be facing Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami as they prepare for the Test series.”I’ve never faced it [the pink ball] before, for whatever reason I keep dodging the day-night games in domestic cricket, so I’ll have a training session today and that will be the first time I’ll face it or bowl with it so that will be pretty interesting,” Green said. “There’s a lot of guys in the team who have played pink ball before so will try to bounce as many ideas off them as I can.”I’ve spoken to a few guys, they say if you are batting at night but you are already in it seems okay, just when you are new to the crease it’s very tough to get yourself in.”From the India attack he faced in the first game, he picked out the “world-class skill” of Umesh Yadav as the most challenging of the bowlers. “He was bowling down breeze on a wicket that had a bit in it so that was incredibly tough,” he said.Bowling-wise, Green said he was on track with where he and the coaching staff had hope he would be as he continues to be limited to a handful of four-over spells. He expects that level to be maintained for at least another couple of weeks before any increase is considered.

All-round Marnus Labuschagne plays key role in keeping Brisbane Heat alive

Sam Harper gave the Renegades hope in the chase but the Heat attack did a good job closing out the game

Andrew McGlashan23-Jan-2021Brisbane Heat kept alive their hopes of reaching the finals with a hard-fought victory against out-of-contention Melbourne Renegades which included a bruising half-century from Chris Lynn and a valuable all-round display from Marnus Labuschagne. The Heat fell away after a 78-run opening stand but Labuschagne’s 49 off 31 balls helped provide some late impact with his most forceful innings of a still young T20 career. In what is a very tight mid-table, the Heat were able to secure the Bash Boost when the Renegades were behind at the 10-over mark of the chase.Marnus Labuschagne fell one short of a half-century•Getty Images

Labuschagne then added the wicket of Sam Harper who had dominated the first part of the Renegades’ chase with a powerful 57 off 32. When there had been a chance of the result getting close with 45 needed off the last four overs the Heat bowlers closed out the game very efficiently.Lynn provides early muscle
Lynn was quickly out of the blocks, particularly against Josh Lalor who was taken for consecutive sixes in his second over, and after a quiet end to the powerplay against Peter Hatzoglou the fifth over from Zak Evans went for 15. Lynn brought up his fifty in the ninth over with a six over cover against Evans and with more than half the overs remaining there was plenty of time for him to make it three centuries in three days after Alex Carey and Alex Hales. However, next ball he picked out deep midwicket and when two deliveries later Max Bryant edged behind the Heat’s innings started to lose its way.Labuschagne revives innings
After the midway point of the innings there was a 36-ball period where the Heat did not find the boundary and lost wickets. Joe Denly was stumped off Imad Wasim and Joe Burns was bowled in the first over of the Power Surge by Hatzoglou. The two overs of fielding restrictions brought just 14 runs as the Heat struggled to lift the rate but then Labuschagne, who has passed 30 for the first time in T20s, found his stride with 15 coming from Hatzoglou’s last over. In the next over, Labuschagne added another six as he scooped Evans over fine leg but one run short of a maiden fifty he fell to an attempted repeat.Finch’s run continues
It has been a forgettable BBL for Aaron Finch who has found a variety of unfortunate ways to be dismissed and it’s a valid question to ask whether he would have been better off missing the last couple of games to give himself some more time at home before the New Zealand tour. On Saturday his innings ended in more conventional style when he was pinned by a brisk nip-backer from Mark Steketee which would have smashed all three. At least for Finch the fact the Renegades won’t make finals means he should be able to see his own bed for a week or so before heading across the Tasman next month.Heat hang in
At 2 for 91 in the 11th over with Harper having matched Lynn with a 29-ball fifty the Heat did not have much room for error to keep themselves in realistic contention of progressing. The game changed when Jake Fraser-McGurk sliced to Labuschagne at point who then took the ball and, after his first delivery was sent for six by Harper, found a top edge from a drag down that settled in Jimmy Peirson’s gloves. The next four deliveries of the over were dots and Labuschagne’s two overs would cost just 10. When Beau Webster fell to a very tight run-out call and Mackenzie Harvey picked out mid-off the Renegades were 6 for 106 and falling fast. However, Wasim and Jack Prestwidge took 16 off the first over of the Surge to keep things interesting before the last four wickets fell for 14. Mitchell Swepson bagged an impressive 2 for 26 from his four overs.
