From signing Henry to Dein's departure – The 20 defining moments of Wenger's Arsenal reign

The Frenchman's 22-year tenure drew to a close at Huddersfield on Sunday – here, Goal takes a look back at some unforgettable memories

GettyRevolutionising training

When Wenger arrived in north London, he completely changed the entire culture of the club.

New training regimes based around isometrics helped older players such as Tony Adams and Martin Keown prolong their careers.

Indeed, diets changed dramatically as Wenger introduced healthy food into the club canteen and his revolutionary methods immediately reaped dividends, as he won the double in his first full season as manager.

AdvertisementGettyOffering a rematch

Wenger was widely lauded for his sense of fair play when, in February 1999, he offered an FA Cup rematch to Sheffield United because Marc Overmars' decisive goal in a 2-1 win at Highbury had come while one of the visiting team's players was down injured.

The rematch took place 10 days later and Arsenal won again by the exact same scoreline.

Selling players at the right time

The loss of striking sensation Nicolas Anelka to Real Madrid in the summer of 1999 looked like a major blow for Arsenal but Wenger used the £23m accrued to sign Thierry Henry, which proved an absolute masterstroke.

Emmanuel Adebayor, Emmanuel Petit, Marc Overmars and Alexander Hleb also feature among the list of players that were never quite the same again after leaving north London.

Signing Thierry Henry… Twice!

After arriving from Juventus in August 1999 for £11 million, Henry was converted from a winger into a striker by Wenger, who had previously worked with his fellow Frenchman at Monaco.

The rest, as they say, is history, with Henry going on to become Arsenal's all-time record goalscorer, as well as one of the finest centre-forwards of the modern era.

His return in 2012 was not quite as successful but there was sheer jubilation when he scored an FA Cup winner against Leeds.

'One of the great joys of my life' – Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney pays heartfelt tribute to League Two club after Hollywood takeover alongside Ryan Reynolds

Rob McElhenney reflects on what owning Wrexham and investing in the town and community, beyond just the football club, means to him.

What Wrexham means to Rob McElhenneyWelsh club under a global spotlightHollywood owners invest in the communityWHAT HAPPENED?

In an interview with The Athletic, McElhenney discussed the reciprocated feelings of warmth towards Wrexham and its community, with the global interest in the club since he became joint owner with Ryan Reynolds having a transformational impact on and off the pitch.

AdvertisementGetty/GOALTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Since McElhenney began the Wrexham takeover with his fellow actor in late 2020, the pair have been determined to be more than just distant foreign owners. Instead, they have pledged to help boost the town as a whole, with McElhenney initially inspired to purchase the club in the first place because he saw similiarities between the rundown area and the Philadephia neighbourhood in which he grew up. Together, the pair have also donated money to a couple of local causes – like £3,500 to save a ransacked local business.

WHAT McELHENNEY SAID

McElhenney said: "We have felt so welcomed into this community. From very early on, if not day one, the people of Wrexham were willing to see what we were all about. Curious, with open hearts. Throughout that entire process, we've felt nothing but the support of the community. And we just like to return that in any way we can.

"To watch people all over the world, but specifically people in the United States, find themselves in this small town in north Wales was really profound. The fact they then – which we were hoping they would do – transferred their interest and love for the people of Wrexham into love and interest for the football team has been one of the great joys and experiences of my life."

WHAT NEXT FOR WREXHAM?

The short-term goal for Wrexham is back-to-back promotions to get out of League Two and into League One – they are currently only outside the three automatic promotion places on goal difference. But the longer-term plan is clear too, with McElhenney aiming for the Premier League by 2033.

The Brazilian striker was forced off after 81 minutes with a hamstring problem and was replaced by Eddie Nketiah.

Jesus was the decisive star for the Gunners as they secured a victory in Spain. The attacker set up Gabriel Martinelli for a fine goal to give his side the lead and then sent the ball curling into the net to double their advantage early in the second half.

The injury to the 26-year-old will be a concern for coach Mikel Arteta. The Gunners were dealt a blow before the game when Thomas Partey was ruled out of the match with a muscle injury.

The north London side still have defender Jurrien Timber out of action, while William Saliba and Bukayo Saka were struggling with injuries during the recent international break but are fit again now.

WHAT THEY SAID

"He felt something in his hamstring. We have to wait and see," Arteta said to . "He straight away asked to be subbed which is not good news because he's not a player that does that at all."

Asked for his verdict on Jesus' performance, the manager said: "You need magic moments in big games and big players to step in and create those moments, today he has done something special."

Speaking to the cameras himself, Jesus added: “I felt something. Let’s see… I have a scan but I’m pretty sure it will be nothing. I did some tests with the physio, it looks not that big, but let’s see."

Leie injury prompts Lions, CSA to bend quota rules

CSA were forced to bend their quota rules after a last-minute injury to a black African player meant the Lions could not meet the stipulated guidelines during their Momentum One Day Cup match against the Titans

Firdose Moonda18-Feb-2016CSA bent their quota rules after a last-minute injury to a black African player meant the Lions could not meet the stipulated guidelines that compel every franchise to field at least six players of colour, of whom three must be black African, in every XI.Legspinner Eddie Leie, one of the Lions’ three black Africans, was ruled out after sustaining a niggle during the warm-ups ahead of their match against the Titans in Centurion. The Lions had only travelled with 12 players, and their reserve was Rassie van der Dussen, an opening batsman who is white. The Lions had to contact CSA to explain van der Dussen’s inclusion before naming him in the team. “We cleared it with all the relevant CSA officials and they had full understanding for the situation,” a Lions’ insider told ESPNcricinfo.Had CSA not given their permission, Lions’ coach Geoffrey Toyana. who is black African, was ready to make a comeback to fulfill the selection criteria. Toyana, also a batsman, has not played competitively since his retirement in 2011 but has 84 first-class matches and 71 List A games to his name.As luck would have it, Toyana did make an appearance when his team lost bowler Carmi le Roux to a hamstring niggle. Toyana fielded until the Lions were able to get a replacement from the spectator’s banks. William Wentzel, a student at the Sport School of Excellence Academy in Pretoria, was watching the match with his friends when they were approached to provide their best fielder. Wentzel, who is white, wore Leie’s kit while on the field. In a rain-affected game, the Lions had the Titans 240 for 6 after 35 overs and were 74 for 1 after 10.1 overs in their reply when no further play was possible.

Spanish inquisitions, English duels and Hart attacks: Champions League Winners and Losers as La Liga clubs struggle in Europe

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are staring group-stage exits in the face, while it was a good week for English right-backs and in-form Napoli

As Bon Jovi famously sang, "Woah, we're halfway there," and at the midpoint of this season's Champions League group stage, there are a number of giants who find themselves living on a prayer as their European fate hangs in the balance.

It was another week of eye-catching continental results and performances, with some teams now within touching distance of the knockout rounds, while others wonder if there is even a place in the Europa League in their future.

But who had the best week? And who needs to move on and forget it ever happened?

GOAL breaks down matchday three's Champions League winners and losers…

Getty ImagesWINNER: English right-backs

The battle to be England's starting right-back at the World Cup is set to be one of the stories of the autumn around the Premier League clubs, and two of the prime candidates showed out on the European stage this week.

There might still be question marks over Trent Alexander-Arnold's defensive capabilities, but there are very few players in the world – full-back or not – who can strike a dead ball like the Liverpool man can, as illustrated by his stunning free-kick goal against Rangers on Tuesday.

Twenty-four hours later, it was Reece James' turn to showcase his credentials as he shone for Chelsea in their resounding win over AC Milan, getting himself on the scoresheet in the process.

There was even an impressive European debut for Manchester City teenager Rico Lewis in their victory over FC Copenhagen, suggesting that the conveyor belt of talented English right-backs is not about to slow down.

So with Kyle Walker facing a race against time to be fit for Qatar 2022, who are you starting against Iran on November 21 – Alexander-Arnold, James or someone else?

AdvertisementGetty ImagesLOSER: Spanish teams not named Real Madrid

While defending champions Madrid are making serene progress through the group stages, winning three of three so far, the rest of the Spanish contingent in this season's competition are facing an uphill battle to reach the knockout stages.

Barcelona have now suffered back-to-back defeats as they went down 1-0 to Inter at San Siro, meaning they have just three points from their opening three games.

They do still have home matches against Inter and Bayern Munich to come, but anything less than four points from those two games could leave them vulnerable to a second successive group-stage exit.

Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, have also lost consecutive games on the road as they followed up defeat at Bayer Leverkusen with an insipid display against Club Brugge on Tuesday.

Sevilla are in an even worse position, having picked up just one point from their opening three matches, with Wednesday's 4-1 home loss against Borussia Dortmund the final straw as Julen Lopetegui was sacked just minutes after full-time, with Jorge Sampaoli waiting to take over the reins.

Getty ImagesWINNER: Napoli

Top of Serie A and with three wins from three in the Champions League, it is difficult to find a team having a better start to the season compared to what was expected of them than Napoli.

Lorenzo Insigne, Kalidou Koulibaly, Dries Mertens and Fabian Ruiz all left the club this summer, but they have bounced back from having their spine ripped out in incredible fashion, with Tuesday's 6-1 win away at Ajax the crowning moment of their campaign so far.

Georgian superstar Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, AKA Kvaradona, might be getting all the headlines, but the likes of Victor Osimhen, Giacomo Raspadori, Piotr Zielinski and Giovanni Simeone are also thriving in attack for Luciano Spalletti's free-wheeling side.

They now look odds-on to win their group and go into the knockout stages as a seeded side, and if they can maintain this form in the second half of the season, then a deep run in the knockout rounds is not beyond them.

Getty ImagesLOSER: Ajax

On the other side of the coin, Ajax's heaviest defeat in any competition since 1964 has sent shockwaves through Dutch football, with questions now being asked as to whether new manager Alfred Schreuder is the right coach to see them through their current transition.

Like Napoli, the Dutch champions lost a host of star names over the summer, including Antony, Lisandro Martinez, Sebastien Haller and Ryan Gravenberch, as well as manager Erik ten Hag, and the decision to go for developmental replacements means falling back in Europe was perhaps inevitable.

That said, the way in which they collapsed against Napoli was concerning, with some atrocious defending on display at the Johan Cruyff ArenA.

All is not lost, though they will likely need to win away at Napoli or at home to Liverpool in their next two matches to have any hope of a top-two finish.

Time has come for Man Utd to cash in on misfiring Marcus Rashford – replacing Kylian Mbappe at PSG could be the perfect transfer for all involved

The 26-year-old has reached his ceiling at Old Trafford after nine years in the first team, and a switch to France could suit all parties

"I joined Manchester United as a seven-year-old boy with a dream," Marcus Rashford told Manchester United's official website after signing a new five-year contract last July. "That same passion, pride and determination to succeed still drives me every time I have the honour of wearing the shirt, and I remain relentlessly determined to win more trophies in the years ahead. As a United fan all my life, I know the responsibility that comes with representing this badge. I can assure you that I will give everything to help the team reach the level we are capable of."

That deal saw Rashford become the highest-paid player at Old Trafford, on a reported £370,000-per-week, and was a reward for his first 30-goal season in the iconic red jersey. He finally appeared to be fulfilling his potential under Erik ten Hag and United broke their wage structure once again in order to secure his long-term future.

But in the space of just eight months, Rashford has broken his promise to the fans. He's managed just five goals in 30 appearances so far in 2023-24, and looks a shadow of the player who inspired United's surge back into the top-four.

Rashford's shocking decline cannot be dismissed as merely a blip either. The England international made his senior debut for the Red Devils almost 10 years ago, and has since developed a reputation as a streaky player, with prolific bursts always followed by disappointing lulls.

In truth, United don't really have any need for Rashford anymore; he's used up all of his nine lives and is no longer worthy of special treatment as the club's current longest-serving academy graduate. As fate would have it, Paris Saint-Germain are currently in the market for new forward as Kylian Mbappe edges closer to joining Real Madrid, and Rashford is reportedly on their list of potential targets.

United should jump at the chance if PSG do indeed table a formal bid in the summer, not least because his market value is dropping with each passing game – but it's a move that Rashford should also be pushing for himself.

GettyTested Ten Hag's patience

Watching Rashford was a painful experience in the first half of the season, as he seemed to be doing his best to sabotage almost every United attack by running into trouble, shooting from ridiculous angles or misplacing simple passes. There was plenty of blame to go around, but Rashford deservedly took the brunt of it as the Red Devils plummeted down the Premier League table and crashed out of the Champions League.

Rashford has also been guilty of a couple of disciplinary breaches that have forced Ten Hag to put his foot down. Ten Hag left Rashford out of a fourth-round FA Cup tie at Newport County after he was spotted out drinking in Belfast, having initially called in sick for training. Rashford wasn't kept out in the cold for very long, though, with United confirming his reintegration to the squad ahead of a subsequent Premier League clash with Wolves, insisting the matter was closed after he "took responsibility" for his actions.

Back in November, Ten Hag dropped Rashford from a Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle as punishment for his visit to a nightclub in Manchester just a few hours after United's 3-0 derby defeat to City. And towards the back end of last season, Rashford was benched for a trip to Wolves after reporting late to a team meeting.

When you consider how swiftly Ten Hag has dealt with other infractions in the dressing room, most notably involving Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo, Rashford should count himself very lucky to still be playing regularly. reported that Ten Hag was "deeply disappointed" and "angered" by Rashford's drunken escapades, but it hasn't damaged their relationship, and he still believes in the player's abilities.

Being so forgiving could come back to bite Ten Hag, because history shows Rashford is unlikely to learn his lesson. United legend Gary Neville has suggested this could just be Rashford's new "personality", while his old team-mate Roy Keane has insisted there is no excuse for his behaviour. "The penny has to drop for Rashford. You’re 26, you’re an experienced player in the dressing room," Keane said on 'Stick to Football' podcast. "You must hold your hands up and say, ‘I have been an idiot’.”

AdvertisementGettyNot playing for the badge or manager

Ten Hag was vindicated when Rashford scored in United's thrilling 4-3 victory at Molineux on February 1, and the 26-year-old also lined up on the left in subsequent victories over West Ham, Aston Villa and Luton Town. The Red Devils have finally found some form and now sit just five points outside the top four, but there is still a lingering sense that Rashford is not contributing enough to the collective cause.

United's resurgence has been underpinned by the stellar performances of Rasmus Hojlund, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo. Their youthful energy and fearlessness is helping to paper over the glaring weaknesses that still exist across the pitch, with the spotlight no longer on Rashford.

But there is no way it can last. The Red Devils are relying purely on individual brilliance, and that won't be enough to beat the top sides; Ten Hag's men will probably learn that lesson the hard way when they come up against City at the Etihad Stadium on March 3.

To have any hope of beating the champions, United would have to press full throttle from the first minute to the last, which won't happen if Rashford is on the pitch. The England attacker went viral for his lack of effort out of possession against Luton, as he allowed Ross Barkley to just skip past him without even attempting to block his path despite the game still being in the balance late in the second half.

Rashford isn't playing for the badge, and he certainly isn't playing for Ten Hag, so what is the point in him sticking around at Old Trafford beyond the summer?

Getty/GOALPSG move 'makes sense'

PSG's interest in Rashford dates all the way back to 2022, when an approach was made that summer before club president Nasser al-Khelaifi described him as "an amazing player" in a revealing interview with . At that stage, the Ligue 1 giants were eyeing a potential free transfer for Rashford, but he eventually decided to pen fresh terms at Old Trafford.

Now, even taking into account Rashford's dramatic decline, United would be able to command a sizeable fee for their prized asset. They may be able to squeeze an extra £10m or £20m out of PSG, too, given the fact they are now desperately scrambling to fill a key attacking role in their squad.

According to , PSG will have £170m ($214m) to spend on new players once they get Mbappe's salary off their books, and the bulk of that will be invested in a direct replacement. Victor Osimhen is also on their shortlist, but Napoli are said to be demanding well over £100m ($126m) for the striker, and PSG may prefer Rashford as a cheaper alternative.

The report also states that PSG’s football adviser, Luis Campos, has long been an admirer of Rashford, and even held informal talks with the United star two years ago. If Rashford wants a transfer to Parc des Princes, it appears it wouldn't take much to make it happen.

Filling Mbappe's shoes would create a whole new weight of expectation, though, as former United striker Louis Saha recently told : "Marcus is a huge name and he’s going to receive a lot of press attention and that’s a challenge in itself. Going abroad to PSG may change the parameters, but he will still be under massive pressure there too.

"It would make sense if Kylian leaves, but I don’t think it will change anything for him in terms of the scrutiny he will be under. He has to improve his game, score more goals and do more because he can."

Getty ImagesEasier ride in Ligue 1

It stands to reason that if Rashford can score 15-plus goals in a single Premier League season, he is capable of at least matching that tally in Ligue 1. Any comparisons between Rashford and Mbappe should be taken with a pinch of salt given the PSG superstar is a World Cup winner who has proven himself as a truly world-class player, but playing in the French top-flight has certainly helped to inflate his career statistics so far.

Mbappe has hit over 30 goals in each of PSG's last three domestic campaigns, and is well on course to do the same again this term having found the net 21 times in just 20 appearances. Those are the sorts of numbers that only Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland can match in the modern era, and while there is no doubt that Mbappe has more than justified PSG's initial £166m ($209m) investment in his talent, it would be a surprise if he replicates that kind of form in Madrid.

Ligue 1 is currently ranked fifth in UEFA's coefficients table with 62.831 points, some 20 points behind the Bundesliga in fourth and almost 40 adrift of the first-placed Premier League. That just goes to prove how far French football is behind the rest of Europe's top leagues right now, with PSG once again their only representatives in the last-16 of the Champions League.

Rashford is not on Mbappe's level, but he could also capitalise on the lack of defensive quality in Ligue 1 if he joins Luis Enrique's side. The former Barcelona manager is also more experienced than Ten Hag when it comes to working with big players and egos, and might also be able to bring the best out of the enigmatic forward on a more consistent basis.

'We always had faith in Pandey' – Gambhir

In an exclusive interview with ESPNcricinfo, Gautam Gambhir looks back at Kolkata Knight Riders’ IPL title charge and looks ahead to India’s tour of England

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Jun-20149:59

Exclusive – ‘There was a calmness to the chase’

Before the IPL final, Manish Pandey’s record for the season had been modest: 307 runs at an average of 25.58 and a strike rate of 105.86. But the Kolkata Knight Riders team management had shown a lot of faith in him – he had been one of only five players who had played all their matches in the tournament. After Pandey repaid that faith with a match-winning 50-ball 94 in the final, Gautam Gambhir, the Knight Riders captain, said he always knew such an innings was around the corner.”Chasing 200, in your home ground, I think he held his nerve and played a lot of unbelievable shots when we needed it the most and he was fearless as well,” Gambhir said, speaking to ESPNcricinfo. “This format gives you the liberty that you can go out there and be fearless and he [Pandey] showed what fearlessness can do. There was a time when we had just lost a wicket and he still went after the bowling and those were crucial hits for us.”So I think unbelievable innings and we had a lot of faith and trust in him. We wanted him to bat at No. 3. There were times when he wasn’t delivering for us, but we always had that trust in him that somewhere down the line he is a quality batter and he will deliver it and cometh the hour, cometh the man.”The win gave Knight Riders their second title in three seasons. Gambhir said he felt “very relieved” when Piyush Chawla struck the winning boundary, considering where the team had been at the halfway stage of the tournament, with two wins in seven matches.Gautam Gambhir didn’t have a great time in England in 2011, but says he won’t carry any baggage from it into the new tour•AFP”It’s difficult to explain the emotions at that moment, but, obviously, I was very relieved, because not a lot of people after the first seven games gave us that chance that we’re going to be sitting here and winning the IPL,” Gambhir said. “Winning nine in a row shows a lot of character and shows the strength and quality of the side as well. We always had that belief that if we played to our potential, it would be difficult for any opposition to beat us.”Robin Uthappa’s 660 runs, with 10 successive 40-plus scores, was Knight Riders’ most eye-catching individual performance, and while he termed it “phenomenal”, Gambhir said Knight Riders’ biggest game-changers in the tournament had been their middle-order batsmen and their bowling attack.”Our actual game changers were people like Shakib Al Hasan, coming in at number five and scoring those very important half-centuries; Yusuf’s knock [against Sunrisers Hyderabad], which made us finish number two [in the league table], which gave us two cracks at the final; Ryan ten Doeschate, he finished the game against Sunrisers; Surya [Yadav]; our bowling strength.”When we got into the auction, we always had this in mind that we wanted to have a strong bowling attack, because if you see, most of the teams went in with a strong batting line-up, but we wanted to go the other way, because if you have a strong bowling attack, it takes a lot of pressure of your batting department. So we went the other way. Robin has been phenomenal, no doubt about that, because getting 650 runs in a tournament, a lot of credit has to go to him, but our game-changers, personally, have been our middle-order and our bowling department.”Gambhir himself turned a nightmarish start to the season – he scored just one run in his first four innings – around to rack up three half-centuries and earn himself a recall to India’s Test squad for their tour to England. Gambhir didn’t have a great time when India last played there, but he says he won’t carry any baggage from that tour into this one.”I’m not someone who looks backward,” Gambhir said. “I’m always someone who wants to look forward. I don’t want to take any baggage, going to England, [from] the last series. This is a fresh series, it’s a new series, I want to go out there and do well.”It’s going to be a challenging tour, it’s going to be a great tour, it’s going to be a tough tour as well, and when you come out of these tours doing well, it gives you a lot of satisfaction, just as an individual, and it grows you as a human being as well. That’s when you realize how you adapt to different situations and how you come out of those different challenges as well.”During the final Test of that 2011 tour, Gambhir suffered a concussion after his head hit the ground as he fell backwards while attempting a catch in the outfield. Troubled by blurry vision and nausea, Gambhir batted down the order, at No. 8 in the first innings and No. 9 in the second, and had to face accusations from sections of the media that he was scared of playing England’s fast bowlers.”People in India will say a lot of things,” Gambhir said. “The day that thing happens [running away from fast bowling], I’ll quit cricket, because my conscience is very clear. If I would have done that I would have never played cricket again.”There was a time in this tournament when I batted at No. 3, against Kings XI, and that’s when I realised, this is not the way I’m going to go about things. People can say a lot of things, that’s their point of view, but deep inside my heart I know what was the fact and what is not. I don’t have to prove to people what has happened at that stage.”

Taylor ripped through the top order to leave the Hawksbills in a hole at 36 for 4 in the eighth over from which they couldn’t recover.Tallawahs captain Chris Gayle chose to field and was rewarded by Taylor’s incisive opening spell. It began when Devon Thomas chopped one onto his stumps in the fourth over and was bookended by Taylor’s athletic one-handed catch off his own bowling to remove Ben Dunk for 23. Dunk was one of only three players to reach double figures for Hawksbills as Nikita Miller picked up where Taylor left off and nabbed 3 for 17 in four overs.A steady drizzle turned into a downpour with one ball to go in the 16th over resulting in an hour and 40 minute delay with the score on 78 for 8. The match was reduced to a 17-over affair with Hawksbills eventually ending on 89 for 9. Tallawahs were set a D-L adjusted target of 87 in 17 overs.Gayle got off to a methodical start, going without a boundary until the sixth over when he targeted Carlos Brathwaite. Gayle smashed back-to-back short balls over midwicket for six as part of a 16-run over to get the wheels in motion. He lofted Ben Laughlin over long-on for six at the start of the 14th over to bring up his 50 off 32 balls. Gayle’s sixth six, deposited over midwicket on the final ball of the over, ended the match with three overs to spare. He was unbeaten on 59.
